I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I follow the recommendation here to disable secure boot in Bios then change the Bios from UEFI to CSM. But when i go to the set up all I see is black screen with a steady cursor in it. And it doesn?t go to the Bios anymore.

The black screen stays there.
I switch off the laptop and on again but still I got a black screen with a steady cursor and that?s it.

It is like that and it doesn?t go to the Windows anymore even going to the Bios I can?t.
What should i do?

Please help....

A:Black screen with flashing cursor after switching to CSM mode

Hi

After switching from UEFI mode to CSM and disabling secure boot, you will not be able to boot from HDD because the installed Windows 8 requires the secure boot and UEFI mode.

Now you can boot from the disk or other bootable medium (USB flash stick) to install the Windows 7 system.

I assume you made these changes to installed Windows 7. Right?

By the way: what notebook model you have exactly?

Hello, I have two problems actually, one came today and one was long time ago, but still didn't solve it. The first one today which appeared was a message DIsc D is Corrupt, I shut down my computer right away and ran CHKDSK on startup, and it now seems to be fixed, but I'm not even sure what this means. Yesterday I scanned my computer with Malwarebytes ( Entire computer ), and found around 10 viruses. Then I had to restart computer because malwarebytes said so, and I clicked restart, and I believe this appeared on startup because of the problem I got some time ago. When I turn off computer, or switch windowed to full screen ( full screen to windowed ) I get black screen, but only if computer was been running for some time, if it's like 10-15 minutes, it goes fine. To explain more, computer keeps running, aswell as my monitor, but screen is black like when monitor is off, I also tryed shutting off and on the monitor. So because it turned black when restarting, I was going to sleep anyways so I shut down computer instead of restarting using the button on computer ( There is no other way than do that ). And I'm not sure did this appear because of shutdown like that after virus scan or because of an virus. So help with these both problems would be helpful. I'm still not sure do I have an virus, but I remember right now when running second scan with Malwarebytes, I forgot to turn off antivirus, and antivirus has seen vcredist as an virus, I said antivirus ignore it and turned it o... Hello, I'm not sure if I got rid of my malwares. Here is my previous topic in another forum, where a member told me I need to post it here instead http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/582505/disc-d-corrupt-and-black-screen-on-shut-down-or-switching-windowed-mode/page-2#entry3758223 . The Disc D is Corrupt stopped appearing after I ran CHKDSK, and I'm not experienced with this error so I don't know what it even means that it's corrupt, it works perfectly fine if it's mean to not work, I also tryed playing games. The last thing I did is scan my computer with Emisoft and there was around 20 viruses, I qarantined them all except one which was a false-positive ( Even checked on virus scan website ( I think it's virustotal ) it was voted as false-positive by other people. ) So I'm not sure if I don't have any malwares anymore

I'm not really experienced with posting on this site so I think I need to post FRST scan results here.

What do you mean by half screen? Is there like a black border around the screen? If so, you just need to adjust your monitor's screen size, it's doing that because it's playing at a different resolution than your desktop.

Hi,

a lot of my friends have this problem. It doesn't matter what type of card they have. My problem is more difficult. When the screen turns off it happens quite often that it doesn't turn back but otherwise the pc (windows) is in working ("blindly" i deleted my icons from the desktop) If i press the power button than for instance the screen comes back and than the computer turn off. I operated with the power setting and i found a newer driver for my intel 4000 vga and new dell '06 bios, but the problem come back always. (+I tried on windows 7; always is ok!)

My power plan (when plugged in):

Dim display: 2 min
Turn off the display: 3 min
Put the computer to sleep: never (on battery 1 hour)

Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.

It stops at Welcome screen with a msg "Loading your personal settings" and no more response. I followed below steps to trouble shoot the issue.

1.I have tried opening in both "safemode" and "safemode with networking", found its working fine. I ran "msconfig" in safemode and unchecked some unwanted applications(nothing related to windows process) and tried again opening in normal mode.... Not worked

2. My internet works normally in safemode. Found some virus by running antivirus in safemode and cleared all the viruses.

It would be really appreciable if any one could solve my issue..

Hi all!

Today I started up my computer (an XP machine running SP3) and after it went through the BIOS, it showed the Windows startup screen (the Windows logo with the blue progress bar), but when that was done, it went to a black screen and won't do anything else.

I restarted and tried a few different things; Start Windows Normally, and Last Known Good Configuration both got me the same black screen.

CheckDisk ran, and it made it to the end, but froze when it said "please wait while your computer reboots" ... after waiting more than 10 minutes, i hit reset and tried to reboot it myself. It did the same Bios-Windows-blackscreen thing as before.

I also tried booting into Safe Mode, which DID work, and when I got in there I tried to do a System Restore (two, actually... for two previous dates) but both did nothing to resolve the problem. I tried simply copying my "important" files to my external HD (which it sees), but it won't copy in Safe Mode

When loading in Safe Mode, the driver list pauses and says "press esc to cancel loading of SPTD.sys" but I've tried it both ways and it doesn't make a difference that I can see.

I tried using my XP CD to boot from, which takes me into the Recovery Console, and I chose to hit "R" to repair, but when it asks me what drive I want to login to (which is C:) I don't really know what to do from there. I haven't booted from a CD before, so I assumed it would run a "Repair Wizard&... Read more

My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.

When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.

I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out
but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.

I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.

You weren't in Safe Mode in that right screenshot. Safe Mode doesn't display your wallpaper and it says Safe Mode in the corner's. Try updating your video driver's and see what happens.

Hey guys, I seem to be having trouble, and I'm not terribly inclined with laptops and computers, mine is an HP G62 laptop, and that's about as far as I know about it. The other day I went to use it, opened it up, I had 3 tabs open (google chrome), and I tried to open a new tab. All new tabs were freezing, and my itunes had frozen as well. I tried closing the laptop, hoping it would go into sleep mode, but it didn't, it stayed running. I reopened it and the screen stayed off, so I did a hard reset (holding the power button to turn it off) and started it back up. I started it in normal mode, and logged on, but after loading from the log on screen, it went to a black screen with just the cursor, and stayed there. I did another hard reset, and started it in safe mode, and now this is how I'm currently running. I've tried disabling the display drivers and restarting, that worked momentarily, but froze shortly after. Next, I tried a system restore, which did absolutely nothing, and then I ran chkdsk and, again, nothing. After all this, I decided to try uninstalling the display drivers, which, once again, did nothing. This seems to be all the info I have gathered from online, and through friends' help, there seems to be nothing left to do that may fix this problem. Anyone have any idea on where to go from here?

A:Black Screen in Normal Mode. Only Safe Mode Works.

Hello ericberard,

You?re having a problem with the computer going to a black screen.

First test the hardware.

Turn off the computer

As you power it back on, tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.

Once the screen loads run the startup test.

If this is windows 7 and the startup test pass.

Power back off the computer.

As you power it back on, tap the F8 key. This will load Advanced Boot Options.

Select Last Known Good Configuration.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

All -- any help you can provide would be appreciated. I do not have any desire to pay Lenovo $100 to walk me through the steps of recovering the system.

I have a lenovo ideapad y560 0646 - windows 7 64 bit.

Each time I start the laptop, I get the following error (after the introductory language that says - we're killing the startup to protect you, really, trust us ):

-- ntfs.sys

Then there's the other boilerplate language that it's not microsoft but you, really --

followed by

*** stop: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFF98001680000, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF8801c36344, 0x0000000000000000)

*** ntfs.sys - Address FFFFF88001c36344 base at FFFFF88001c2B000, DateStamp 4a5bc14f

If you can help by pointing to something describing the steps to restore the system, that would be great. Lenovo seems to think all hardware is fine but that the operating system is corrupted.

In short, I was using an air card connected to a PC Card Adapter - inserted in the laptop. Hit hibernate and quickly, without thinking, removed the PC Card Adapter from the laptop. Later, when hitting power on, the blue screen appeared and has not left.

I have tried to enter via safe mode, and that does not work.

There's extensive data on the hard drive that I need to take all practical steps to preserve before blowing it up.

Thanks,

Have you tried reinstalling the pc card adapter and then starting up to see if you can then safely remove it?

As far as the error message itself, "Stop 0x0000007E" or "Stop 0x00000050" Stop error message in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 MS has a fix available at the page there for this type of error.

I have a gateway computer that is about 3 years old. It has a ati radeon 3200 gfx card and came with 4 gigs RAM. Recently I purchased 2x2gb G Skill DDR2 ram upgrade in hopes of more efficient gaming [gfx card is OK for 8gb ram max]. After installing the new ram [about a month ago] the computer was running fine. The new ram created a button on my toolbar called AMD Catalyst, and right-click gave identical options for each ram card, one was a list of what looked like screen settings. I know it were running on 600x800, and last night my troublesome youngest son was using my computer and says he clicked a different option by accident, making the screen freeze momentarily then go black.

I've tried:
restarting my computer
removing the 2 G Skill ram cards
under msconfig in safe mode, disabling AMD Catalyst, for it seems to be the root of the problem.

But every time i restart my computer and try booting in normal mode, I get the typical Welcome ring from the speakers accompanied by a black screen. The screen is a 36" Vizio flatscreen tv with VGA hook up, been using for a computer screen for over a year now.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

My boot gives me a "Your Hard-drive controller is running slaves (children) that require 32-bit mode. This mode is not currently supported. We are shutting down your computer to prevent corruption." blah blah blah.

Does anyone know how to get my computer to support 32-bit mode? I just reconfigured my computer with a clean load of Windows95A after a hard-core viral attack and it's a little behind on its capabilities. Heck, it won't even install DirectX 4.

PS: do invalid page fault errors indicate defective meory hardware? Just curious.

A:Windows 32-bit mode switching

Wont install Dx4? Your computer does have some problems(I have 7.0a). Well, you can y tell me what your video card is, and then I wcan help you switch to 32-bit mode.

As for Q#2, some page fault errors can be from RAM. For example, one guy recieved these error messages once because he had two RAM sockets filled and it caused it.

I have an older win7 media server (WMC with 4 cable card tuners) that I want to add a 3TB drive.
However when I first installed sata controller was set to ide mode.
The 3tb drive only works with AHCI mode and of course my WIN7 will not boot
if I only switch mode in bios.
I was going to save everything on WHS2011, switch mode then restore everything
but system drive and storage drive GB usage is larger than what I have on WHS.
I was thinking of saving my storage files on other computers but that will take forever.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ray

Hi - I'm having a problem with Windows 7 SP1 where, after a few hours, Windows seems to switch off the Aero theme by itself with no obvious cause. I can't seem to switch it back on, either, when I go into the Personalise menu - there's no option to change the colour of the glass as there usually is... only restarting seems to resolve things. What's going on here?

A:Automatically switching off Aero mode?

Hmm - just noticed WinSAT.exe was running in the background and hogging the CPU while this was going on - and then a minute or so later it switched back into Aero mode again! Weird... o_O;;

O.K., I have a few problems that I need your help with.
I have a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 6830, Desktop, PCI, Ultra ATA-66, Windows Me, 700 MHz Intel Celeron. Memory specs: 64MB (removable), Maximum 512 MB, expansion 2 sockets.

First is, my computer went into safe mode and I forget how to get it out of safe mode.
Second is, I was given a tower and I would like to switch but I'm not sure how to go about it and how to save all my folders from the HP into the new tower which is a Gateway E-3110-300, desktop, PCI/ISA, 300MHZ Intel PentiumII. Memory specs: 64MB (removable), maximum 384MB, expansion 3 sockets.
Now, I know switching these towers may not improve my performance very much because the MB is the same - which brings me to my third problem. My HP now only has 63MB and I'm guessing one of the whatever ya call its got fried from so much use of memory and so forth and is now unusable, so the gateway might be a little better seeing as how none of the MB has been fried, that I know of, and even though the maximum MB for the HP is greater, I can not afford even $50 or $100 dollars to get a memory upgrade, so switching towers is the only solution that I have.

Thank You,
KerriAnnWolf

Hi there,

I have a Samsung 2253BW Monitor, I have the computer plugged into the standard output. I have a DVD player with a HDMI - DVI cable plugged into the back.
When I switch source it comes up with not optimum mode 1680 - 1050, I click Auto Adjustment and it doesn't change. I'm just wondering how I can sort this out so I can watch a full length film without the monitor blacking out on me.

Thanks Adam

OK so I have never seen this question and I have been trying to fix it for about 10 hours which is ridiculous considering I can usually fix almost anything myself. I'll start of by saying this is for My Acer 6920G laptop and that Acers have a different recovery mode then other brands.

Here is what I did. I had a lot of unknown space on my hard drive that was being used and I could get it back without reformatting. Anyways I backed everything up that I needed as always and then went through Acer recovery mode and that was great. After 30 minutes the process was done and I installed AVG first and then proceeded online to do my windows updates as I usually would when I restart fresh. Now the problem started when it required me to restart once they were all done. I did that and there my problem was it booted me into Acer Recover not thinking I tried that and it of coarse wont work because it set my booting partition to C which is normal but C is now a 10Gb Recovery section and D is where my OS is. The Acer recovery will not work now and that is fine because I don't need to use it to solve my problem. So with that said I made a Vista boot disk and through the load driver function I can access as far as properties for the PQService( C: ), ACER( D: ), and Boot( X: ) so I haven't seen anything yet but does anyone know if there is a way to switch the boot partition. It will be awesome if someone can help me because Acer them self will not help me as they either want me... Read more

While dealing with another issue, I've been told that I should switch my SATA mode from RAID to AHCI. I do not have a RAID array and don't plan to. However, I've been told that I would need drivers for this, and I'm not sure if my Windows installation has them or not. I don't want to switch modes only to boot Windows and have it corrupted or god-knows-what. So could someone tell me if it's possible to just switch? Or should I check for drivers first?

Hi all,

I've been having a serious issue going on with my Asus K95V laptop running on Windows 10 Home 64 bit OS. It's been a couple of weeks now since this started and it's getting on my last nerve to say the least. I've been searching hard on the internet for an answer to this problem, seems like I'm not the only one having these issue's with an Asus laptop, bad news is nowhere I have seem to find an answer or solution to the problem.

This is how it goes. My laptop keeps switching from AC mode to battery mode when connected and plugged in. This happens when I start up my computer out of sleep mode. Then I have to unplug the power cord, if I do this it goes back to AC and everything seems to be fine, the battery is loading to the max but if I dare to put it to sleep, after getting it out of sleep mode again it goes back to battery mode as if it's not connected actually.

This seems to have started after some update for Windows 10, I can't tell for sure but I been having some other problems too since I did the big update to Windows 10. All I could solve but not this one ..... I'm pretty sure and convinced it's not a hard ware issue. Somewhere along the line searching there was this person that claimed it's a built in program bloatware type to inspire new sales, this person suggests to delete ATK, this is the program that supposedly controls your power supply. This actually helped for a few people but seems to me this is just too risky business. Also some people ar... Read more

was so hoping this issue was beneath microsoft by this point: on a common intel mobile 45 chipset platform I am running ok with w8cp x64 emulating ide but would really like to do this the right way. this is the first lab rat I have really trying to polish windows 8 - very annoying

can someone school me on this - i feel like I"m back in xp daze

i downloaded the intel driver package and the first thing it does is install the sata device package - all completed without errors but I figured it was to no avail. I was right. doesn't the intel package copy the files off to a folder somewhere, and if so, where? and if I then get it running again in compatibility mode [it is currently stuck in a repetitive 'repair' loop that I have no clue how to put to death] - can I go to dev mgr and update driver pointing to the file stash, then exit, restart, change to SATA and go?

A:switching to real SATA mode after the fact?

If you are talking about switching from IDE to AHCI mode in the bios, then you can do this.

In IDE mode in Windows, open a command prompt. Enter cd c:\windows\system32\sysprep\
Now run, sysprep /generalize /oobe /restart

The machine will now do its thing for anywhere from a minute to 15 minutes then reboot. While rebooting enter the bios and change the system from IDE to AHCI mode then save and let it boot. It will take anywhere from 10 to 40 min to boot. You will probably be prompted to go through the set up process all over again, have your key ready. Once back to Windows you will need to reload all your drivers that are not native to windows 8.

What you gain from this: Change from IDE to AHCI mode. Avoid a complete re-install of the OS and all your software. Yes this is a pain but it is usually the fastest and simplest way to make the change and not lose any data.

As always be sure to back up your data before attempting anything like this.

So my yoga 2 jumps back and forth from laptop mode to tablet mode for no reason at all. The slighest tap or just randomness will change the mode of the compter. I have gone in the display settings and selected the option that says something like "do not ask me and do not switch modes" for my display, but it still does it anyway.  Once it is in tablet mode, the only way to get it back is to push the power buttom till its sleeping, then wake it up.  Also potentially unrealted, or maybe not, the screen has a random habit of flikering unprovoked. Thank you for your ideas at a solution in advance!

I am running an HP/Compaq nx9420 notebook on max 1680x1050 res, Mobility Radeon

Everytime I have to log back into windows after my monitor goes off or screensaver comes on due to inactivity and idling, my desktop turns into a panning desktop. I just installed ATI Catalyst Control Center and Mobility Drivers 6.9 and they work well except for this one thing. No where in any of my settings do I have panning desktop enabled. I tried
re-installing the Omega Catalyst Drivers and the same thing still happens. I do
see in my display settings it has 2 monitors listed, the Default being my
notebook display as primary and the secondary being inactive (grey) and disabled
listed as Default LCD, but the resolution can go up to crazy numbers. This only
appears in Display Settings. There is no external monitor, just the notebook 17"
WSXGA+ display. I don't know why display settings even lists a disabled
secondary monitor. In my device manager under Monitors I see three Default
monitors, one generic television, and one plug and play monitor. I tried
disabling and uninstalling all except one and they just come back upon
restart...My display properties lists "(Multiple Monitors) on ATI Mobility
Radeon X1600" and there are two of these, the second of which is inactive. I
don't know what to do anymore. It keeps switching to a resolution my laptop
doesn't support and it goes into panning mode every time I ... Read more

System Specifications:

CPU: Intel i5-4670
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H
RAM: 8GB
GPU: Nvidia GTX 760
SSD (Boot): 256GB Samsung 840
HDD (Storage): 2TB Seagate Barracuda & 500GB Seagate Barracuda (Model: ST3500418AS / Serial: 6VMBPPDX)
I am trying to update the firmware on one of my hard drives but every time I try it fails. It simply says 'no controllers found' and then 'failed'. I think it is due to the fact that it is an older drive (5 years) and I am currently in AHCI mode opposed to IDE. I am in AHCI mode as I have a SSD as the boot drive.

The drive I am trying to perform the firmware update on is a Seagate Barracuda (500GB). The method of updating the firmware involves running a .exe from Windows, which in turn opens a utility that then restarts the computer and updates the firmware. No bootable USB or CD is used during the process.

Is there a way to change my system to IDE mode, update the firmware, then change back to AHCI mode without causing any issues? If the update process involved a bootable USB or CD I would just disconnect the boot drive during the process, but this doesn't seem to be an option here.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any responses.

i have windows home xp edtion on parkard bell.in safe mode it is fine, but when on normal bootup mode it will hang up after 2mins aprox(then restart saying crit error, check hardware etc and being to dump files kernel),on a blue screen.

i tried a different graphics card, but no joy.so i replaced the hdd drive and put a fresh copy of windows xp pro edtion on,but it loads all the files(i have not pressed f6)i just let it run its course on the disc, then it hangs up on the blue screen again with the words(crit error 0x0000007f)check hardware etc and if this is the first time you have seen it try starting windows again.

Thankyou for all your time.

A:Solved: xp safe in safe mode fine...mormal mode blue screen

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..
