Laptop shuts off when screen is moved

Q: Laptop shuts off when screen is moved

OK I have been looking into this problem for a little while now and I already got a little bit of info.
It is a compaq presario 1500 notebook, OS is windows xp home. I took it into a computer place and had a tech look at it. When it shut off, the power light went off. He said that it is more than likely shorting out, and it is getting shut off to keep it from frying. It made sense to me. I'm not a computer genius but I do know a lot about electric circuits. Anyway, I did a search on the net about it and it came to a thread in these forums. Someone was having the same problem, and someone else gave the same answer. It was probably a short.
One thing came up, but I didn't think of it when the tech was looking at it. A long time ago, months before it started shuting down, it might of thrown a fan blade. I could pick it up and lightly shake it and I would hear something bouncing around on the inside. Now it doesn't make that sound anymore, and I didn't do anything to fix it. It is right where the fan is so I am guessing it is the fan blade. But, could that have gotten lodged somewhere, or broke something to cause the short? I'm positive its not overheating because the fan works fine and I can feel the warm air blowing out.
So here are my questions. What could it be that is possibly shorting? What could cause it? Could being dropped cause it? It started happening after I let someone borrow it, so it may of been dropped. What kind of things need to be replaced? How long would it take to fix it? Would special parts need to be ordered? How much could it cost?
I am not really looking for answers to ALL of those, but if anyone has any info I would love to hear it. I'm just looking for a little bit more detail besides "a short". I am going overseas in 2 weeks and I want to try to get this fixed before I go.

Preferred Solution: Laptop shuts off when screen is moved

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the Inspiron 15R Notebook (Inspiron 5521). I bought it back in April and from the beginning it has randomly shut off, but I overlooked it because it did not happen very often. For about the last month, the shut offs have happened almost every time I shift my computer to a more comfortable position. I have checked online and the general consensus appears to be loose components on the motherboard. I have a one year limited warranty. Can this problem be fixed under my warranty and how do I go about sending it back to Dell for the repairs?

Hi naturalTAN,
Please provide the complete error message received for the hard drive while running the diagnostics.
You may also run the diagnostics specifically on the hard drive from the main menu. Pressing the Esc key while the diagnostics are running will redirect to Main menu page.
Also, try the system performance in ‘Safe Mode’. Try working on the system for some time in ‘Safe Mode’ and try moving it to see if it shuts down. The steps are given below:

Restart or Power on the system.
Tap <F8> at dell logo until ‘Advanced Boot Options’ appear.
Choose ‘Safe Mode’ and hit ‘Enter’

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist you further.

This might be weird but when I bend the lid of my latop screen or try to move my laptop, my laptop suddenly turns off without warning then restarts (sometimes it doesn't), this also happen when i play heavy load games like rise of the tomb raider, after 5-10 mins. in the game my laptop turns off. During a light load activities like browsing or watching videos it works fine, I've tried cpu and gpu benchmarking it also works fine, so its not heat problem. I thinks it's motherboard problem but im not sure. I've tried these:
removing the battery and  holding the power button for 30 secs.
running the diagnostic (It says the system's fine).
booting in safe mode.
My laptop is an dell inspiron 15 7566. I just bought it last month. What do you guys think?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

It sounds to me that you have somekind of short between your computer and your display.

I would suggest that you take it back if it`s still under warranty otherwise it will need to be repaired by someone who is qualified to do so.

The screen is always white when the computer is off.  If the computer is on, it works fine.  This happened after liquid was spilled into the laptop.  Everything else seems to be working (I did replace the keyboard).  Does anyone know how to diagnose this problem and how to fix it?  The only way to turn it off is to remove the power and battery.

I have had this laptop, a Toshiba Sattelite A665, for... about 4 years now. The only real problem I've had to deal with is some networking issues, which I had fixed. As of recently, whenever I adjust the screen slightly, about 50% of the time, the laptop will do a hard shut-down. All lights go off, and the screen goes black. When the computer shuts off, windows comes up saying that the computer was shut down improperly, and asks for the safe mode start up stuff, bla bla bla.

Any ideas as to why this would be happening? It's really beginning to get to me.

Is there any Minidumps? Perhaps it's BSODing. Should be at C:\Windows\Minidump\ , attach them up here for a geeze. Perhaps try re-installing the drivers from the manufacturers website, Drivers & Software Support | Toshiba should be there in your case.

There will also be static sound. Usually that happens in the first boot in a few hours (cold start). Subsequent boot ups tend to be fine.

From the windows event log it's a Kernel-power 41 error (63).

It's a Toshiba Portege M900 running on Windows 7 (Intel Core 2 Duo, ) Any ideas what's wrong with it (e.g. motherboard or hdd?) I've just tested the RAM and the full test came out fine.

My old asus laptop, running Windows Vista, has taken a turn for the worse. I recently started using it again due to my newer one being away for repairs. Unfortunately I forgot about some issues I had with this one that have recently resulted in the bluscreen memory dump. It happens randomly and I think part of the issue was the RAM. I removed the sticks and with one it worked just a bit slow and with the other the computer wouldn't even start up. So I left that one out. It was still slow however so I went into msconfig and disabled all of the programs that turn on at startup. This increased the laptops speed and all was well for about four hours. I left while a game was patching, the new Rift game which i paid extra to be able to play on release but havnt been able to, and upon my return there was blue screen.

That is my predicament. I know its a lot to read but I didn't want to leave anything out. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

It seems to be getting more and more often that this screen is showing up. Any ideas?

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Hello Folks,

Trying to fix my friends laptop but running into a weird issue.

Using Windows Vista Home Premium
Graphics Card is Standard Intel 945

When booting windows normally I get a solid blue screen (not BSOD) after the login screen. Boots into safemode normally.

Clean for viruses/malware

Tried the following:

1) Plugged in an external monitor (VGA Port) and it brought up a display window on pc showing it was currently in multiple monitor mode (still blue screen in backround). Blue Screen on monitor as well. Switched to Single Display and now just blue screen on laptop display. Connected to TV with S-Video. Blue screen on TV as well.

2) Changed Resolution as well as 16 bit/32 bit color. No Effect.

3) Uninstalled/Reinstalled Graphics Driver. No Effect.

4) Tried creating guest account and logging in normally. Won't get past login screen. Just continuously loading.

Any suggestions?
Thank You in Advance for any ideas.

Hi! My boyfriend's old laptop died, leaving us scrambling for a new one. We got a great deal (free) on a good laptop (needs a new battery), but it didn't have a harddrive. To cut my usually verbose self short, we don't have the time or money right now to get a second drive and then a connector so that he can get his data off his old drive.

SO, we just want to put the old drive in the new laptop. I've done that, and it recognizes the drive in BIOS just fine. It can even start Windows 2000...but then it comes with the Blue Screen. I'm not surprised, considering that it's geared for the old laptop, but I was oh so hoping that there is a way to get it to function properly without erasing all his files.

I tried doing an emergency repair with Windows 2000, but to no avail.

What are the chances that upgrading to Windows XP will solve our problem?

Do you think that it's just not going to work, period, and that the blue screen would not go away even with a reformat? All the data on it is recoverable, but it would be time consuming so we'd rather not try this unless absolutely necessary.

Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so here's my problem, I'm currently running a Compaq laptop (F712NR) with Windows Vista. I first noticed this problem while running windows XP after I turned on hibernation, the computer display would not come back on after I "woke" the laptop up. I figured it was a problem with the OS install and Since i wanted to try service pack 1 anyways, I installed vista, since that's what the laptop came with. Now the screen will stay off if the laptop turns off the display for any reason other then just closing the lid which i believe is just a hardware switch that's doing that. I have my power options set to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid. Also when Vista asks if you want do do something the screen will go blank for a bit but the back light stays on. I tried replacing the ram, no luck, and updated the drivers, No luck. I'm stumped, anyone got any ideas?

I took a video of the screen acting up, in mp4 format

Hi,

I have a HP Compaq Presario C700 Notebook PC purchased new and have had it about three years. For last month or so it has sometimes shut down and then restarted with a blue screen message. It's happened when I play music files and, and also a few times when a program freezes and I hit CTRL+ALT+Delete to open the Task Manager. Tonight it happened when the HP automatic product identification application hung and I then tried to open Task Manager; the computer shut down and restarted with the blue screen message.

The blue screen message is only briefly visible, so I can't get any of it other than something about "If this is the first time you've seen this message...." Then the desktop appears and there's the following, "Windows has shut down unexpectedly" and the option to find out more about the event. Three times I've copied the words describing the event and the first part of the message is the same each time:

this is a weird thing that started happening, my computer shuts down when it gets to the account screen. It loads fine, then automatically makes a noise like its running something, and then goes to the windows is shutting down screen, never allowing me a chance to log on. It loads in safe mode, and I've tried scanning for viruses and system restore, but none of that worked. Can anyone help me out?

Hello! New here~ Anyways, I just moved my computer from my apartment over to my friends house. The computer worked fine before I moved it here but now it won't start. If I start it up normal it gets to the XP loading screen and after loading for a bit it bsod me with the error 0x0000000034 (which I had to record to be able to catch, it's faster than lightning).

I've tried to run it on safe mode but it restarts there too. Bios is the only place where it doesn't die. Now I've checked through the computer if any cables were loose or if anything was wrong. Everything seems right though.. I've had this problem two times with my old computer when moving it. It was fixed by pressing on all the cables (one must've been "glitchy")

Here I am with a brick of a computer at my friends house, disappointed by the ruined evening and not sure what to do. Any advice how to fix this? Thank you!

A:Moved computer - Now it shuts down during boot

Open the case and disconnect/reconnect all cables for PSU and drives.

Are you sure that STOP error wasn't 24, rather than 34?

I need your help people.
My friend's computer automatically shuts itself down whenever it is opened.
It continues to load up to the desktop but then it shuts down quickly and displays the shut down message "saving your settings..." then it turns off..

it is running on a Windows XP professional..
and has about 300 MB of RAM
it also has two hard drives with 20 Gigabytes each...

Here's what happened before this..
-The last time it ran I had a problem running BitDefender and any other antivirus / anti spy softwares because the system shuts the program down. I installed Trojan Remover and scanned for malicious files but then in the middle of scanning, the computer freezes and I restart it pressing the reset button on the CPU.
-I tried restarting in safe mode but it just freezes so I repeated restarting the computer in normal mode for about five times then finally i was able to run Bitdefender, Trojan Remover, and Ad-aware.. but there came an error message saying that "RegEdit cannot be accessed" or something like that..
-When I ran Trojan Remover there were about more or less 5 files that were detected as "internet worm" I tried choosing "disable from running by changing its reference" and it says "the policy on registry editing was reset" but then whenever i run Trojan Remover again these files are still detected.. i didn't know what to do so i left that matter
-I ran Bitdefender and almost all files that are detecte... Read more

about a week ago I was given a used Sony Vaio desktop model RS310 with XP, 256 ram, 2.8hgz, and a 80gig HD.
The owner had the PC (layed on its side) in a box in the garage for maybe 2 years or less. The PC outer case was pretty dirty, but the inside had your typical dustiness. But I took the whole PC apart and cleaned it like new. Used only liquid cleaners on non electronic boards and such.

Ok, here are the issues
XP boots fine, but when the tower is moved around the Sony Vaio Monitor would shut off, along with the keyboard and mouse. But both fans, and DVD drive were still functional (maybe HD too, but I cant tell). The PC would reboot automactially, sometimes it wouldn't.
I checked the Sony monitor/keyboard/mouse on my other PC to make sure they weren't faulty and they worked perfectly. When the Sony Vaio was up and running normal, I moved the back ports around, the monitor/keyboard/mouse/internet cables and were functioning perfectly.
But this time when I slightly tilted the Tower back, these issues returned. After having the PC on for about 30mins without movement the PC would of all of a sudden do these problems again, sometimes reboot other times not.

Now the PC stays on for hours, sometimes restarts, other times it doesn't. I don't even bother moving the PC around Im too scared. I been able to do all important updates on XP, with SP3.

So the question I have, what do some of you guys think it might be? I personally think the Power Supply might ... Read more

I followed the directions to post my log files correctly, I'm hoping someone can analyze this soon? Thank you so much in advanced for your help! Bryan===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. Heres my problem, when I turn on my Presario, I get the Compaq screen, then it goes to the windows xp loading screen, and at the next step, when it should go to windows log in, it flashes a blue screen, too fast to read what it says, and reboots.
Now I just signed up here a couple of minutes ago and when I got to this forum I saw the recovery sticky and tried those directions. At the compaq screen I repeatedly tapped f10, but instead of giving me options (per the instructions) it seemed to do the diagnostic on it's own. It passed a lot of the functions, the only error being "system cmos checksum bad- used default settings". So I looked up the error and it says the error could be three things, bad cmos battery, bad bios update, or corruption due to incorrect shut down. Now, if I was to guess at one of these three options, I'd guess it was the battery. This is a pretty old laptop and as far as I know, the battery has never been changed. So heres my questions:
1.)Does this sound like a plausible explanation of whats wrong? I've had the hard drive go bad on me once before and the symptoms were completely different.
2.) If it was the cmos battery, would the laptop start with default settings, even though I haven't changed the battery?
3.) The laptop took a jolt shortly before this started happening, is it possible something just came loose?
4.) I had the laptop shut down on me once because the fan was clogged with dust and bound up (overheated). Now, with this probl... Read more

Hello all
Windows 7 Pro 64bit Retail version was installed on a Dell M4300 on a Samsung SSD and worked flawless. I sold the Dell and kept the SSD. I had iTunes on the SSD and synced to my iPhone with music and pictures.

I tried to boot the Win 7 Pro SSD build on a Lenovo T430 and it won't boot. I tried the Win 7 DVD to repair it with no luck yet. The Diagnosis and repair details: are very long and I can't copy and paste it. So this is just a few lines.
Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully.
------
------
Session details
System Disk = \Device\Harddisk0
Windows directory = C\Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1
------------
A patch is preventing the system from starting.

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490
-----------------

I typed diskpart, then list disk, and Disk 0 and Disk 1 are displayed. Disk 1 is 22 GB and msata. Neither have an asterisk ( * ) to the left of "Disk x"

Any suggestions?

I don't want to resync my phone and all that associated stuff that is why I really really really want this SSD to boot.

TIA peoples!

Hi, I get a blue screen almost every time I adjust the screen (maybe 80% of the time). Even when it's just been put into hibernate and I fold the screen down, it will say 'windows didn't shut down correctly' - it seems to now take 3-4 minutes for the hibernate lights to go out, after which it's ok to close the screen.

I've had my laptop for a couple of years now and I'm not entirely sure when this problem began occuring, but whenever I move my laptop, it freezes. It doesn't matter what I'm doing - I can just be on my desktop homescreen but if I move my laptop a certain way, tilt it, change the angle of the screen, almost always it will freeze. Then I will have to press the power button just to put it to sleep, and then when I press it again it will usually be back to normal; sometimes I have to shut it off and restart it completely. I've tried installing different drivers and whatnot, but nothing seems to work. It's really annoying to always have to use my laptop at a desk. Sometimes, the screen will turn black and recover on its own and a message will pop up saying the display driver has stopped responding but has recovered. I'm also not a gamer and even if I'm watching videos, the laptop will be completely fine as long as it's on a flat surface. But, again, it will freeze once I move it.  Has anyone experienced this before?  Please give me whatever help or tips you can, as I'm willing to try pretty much anything to fix this.

Hi

If you think you have a virus then you have to start a new thread in the Virus/Malware support section.
First you should read the "First Steps" document and gather all the required reports.
If you cannot complete a step, just skip it but be sure to include this information in your post
Then start a new thread in the virus/malware section and attach the reports you have created.

o__o it's acting really quite odd...

my laptop was purchased in jan. 2004. it is a dell inspiron 5100. up until recently, it has never really had any hardware issues. but this is just obnoxious!

note the sometimes. if i move it from room to room while it is powered on, it seems to be perfectly fine. i also play maplestory. but sometimes the movement or button-pushing freaks my computer out. sometimes, however, only sometimes it will do one of three things:

1. it'll stop on one screen and just freeze the whole image there.
2. it'll stop on one screen and freeze the image, then fade to a purple-white.
3. (and this just happened the first time tonight) it'll suddenly go into bad-tv-channel type mode. like black and gray lines going (moving) across the screen.

i've compared it with my dad's laptop, same brand, same model, that was purchased two months after mine. there are only two physical differences i could find.

1. when i move his computer screen, it's stiff. it will stay exactly where i put it. mine, however, moves around. it doesn't like... fall over or anything. but it really has quite a bit of give. i'll position it in one place, and if it doesn't like it, it'll fall back a little.
2. a while back, the plastic piece that you stick the headphones into broke into several parts. and i couldn't manage to get one piece out of the hole. i'm hoping that it's not lodged in there somewhere... >_> bu... Read more

A:laptop turns off when moved sometimes.

yeah it sounds like possibly a loose connection between the computer and the screen. Based on when you bnought your computer, you should call Dell on this one, since you are entitled to lifetime phone support on hardware issues. If your warranty is still in effect, they'll replace any parts that need replacing, otherwise, they'll sell you whatever you need, or tell you how to make your existing parts work.

Hi,

About two weeks ago, my laptop just locked up in the middle of usage and when I tried to hard reboot it, it wouldnt even start up. The lights and fan would go on but nothing would load. I waited about 30 minutes and it would boot up normally but it froze after about an hour of use. The next day the laptop worked fine and this remained true for a week. After that, it froze and I couldnt get it to boot up for quite a while, and when I did, it would freeze immediately or within a few minutes. I thought the ram could've been bad so I swapped the ram and slot but it still froze. I recently discovered that when I do boot the laptop, it would freeze when I moved it slightly. Does anyone know what is wrong with my laptop? I dont want to have to replace it.

Thank you

Hi Abhi94
The issue could relate to a few factors.
1. A loose battery connection to the motherboard.2. The battery housing gone loose. Or3. Power adapter port fault.
To understand the source you will need to look through the following details,
1. Is there any damage on the machine or the adapter? 2. Are you using the original Dell adapter? 3. Please check the status of adapter in BIOS and verify it charges the battery. Check if wiggling the adapter cable changes the status in BIOS. Attempt this while ensuring adapter is not disconnected.4. Please check on the battery health status in BIOS. 5. Please run the onboard diagnostics to understand if there is any failure. Press and hold Fn key and power up the machine.
Try reseating the connection of the battery and try a known working adapter. Please provide the exact system model or click on my User name and private message the service tag along with your contact details. I will be able to provide more related information based on the system model.
If the machine is out of warranty, you may obtain help at http://dell.to/2r7MQXN.
