windows xp wont boot after installing software meant for 95/98 OS only- keyboard fail

Q: windows xp wont boot after installing software meant for 95/98 OS only- keyboard fail

recently bought a tablet and installed the software.. after realising it is only for windows OS 95/98..ater restarting the comp like it asked me to; an error message comes up and gives me 5 or so options like.... restore windows to last good config point... start windows normally (i have to choose this as the keyboard does not work) or safe mode etc..

the usb keyboard which fails does allow me to get into BIOS though, after the first load screen the usb keyboard fails.. leaving me with no choice but to 'start windows normally' which then it freezes on the xp logo loading screen! so i have to problems....

1. how do i get my usb keyboard to work- do i need to buy an old keyboard(would that work ?)

2. what option do i select if i can when getting on the error message screen?

3. any other advice i need?

thanks for your help!

dont forget my usb keyboard fails after 1st load up screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Boot into Safe Mode. You may have to wait a few minutes until the USB gets recognized. If that doesn't work, try a PS2 keyboard (or USB to PS2 Adapter) Go into the Add Remove programs and Uninstall the software that you installed.

Hey all. I have a question. My keyboard and mouse are bouth USB, and every time i restart my comp, they work in dos but once windows boots up they just stop working. If i plug in a PS2 mouse and reboot the computer, they USB devices start to work again. Hi guys I have just had my computer in for repairs and the ssd disk was changed. I was running windows 10 before and everything was perfect until an update ruined it all. Long story wont go into that  Anyway so i unstall all my software and do an update to windows 10. All the preps and so seems to go fine. Then it reboots and is stuck. Never moves. I see faint HDD activity but i let it run for 8 hours and still nothing, still gangs in the acer boot window. It is after the bios load, because i can access that if i am fast and press f2. After a while i gave up and thought perhaps it was just a fluke so i used my recovery dvd's and reinstalled my system and office and outlook and .... After about 5 hours installation my system was ready to go. So i decided lets try again. And yet again same failure. Simply hangs with the Acer Logo. I called Microsoft and the told me to do a startup repair. However that is not possible, i can get it into the repair mode but none of the functions work. So they said it was a hardware thing but everywhere i look it states the v3-772 should have no problem with the windows 10. I am normally quite good at fixing my own problems but in order to fix a problem i need an error or errorcode or something to go from. Does anyone have any idea what to do?

I can't reproduce your issue because it doesn't stop my PC from booting BUT I think I've got a solution for you since you said you "...HAVE HAD SNOOP FREE BEFORE JUST FINE..."

I recommend that you download the VERSION that worked for you in the past. How? You can do that by clicking here and going to the approximate year and month you got a working version of Snoop Free from its web site then downloading and installing that version.

I personally tried opening a snapshot of the site from November 21, 2002 and was able to download a working installer of Snoop Free.

After closing the lid on my studio 1535 (WINDOWS VISTA), I tried to restart it, but to no avail. I get this message after trying to boot windows:

Stop:c000021a (fatal system error)The session manager failed to create prefixes system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000) (0x00000000), The system has been shut down.

After researching a bit, I realized what may have happened. I remember awhile before it stopped working the "update windows" window on my lower right that said it would restart in a couple mins. Then I clicked postpone 4hrs, and that 4 hrs may have occured during the duration i closed the lid. I read from another forum that when you interrupt windows while updating (hibernation, sleep, close the lid), you'll receive this error ( at least someone else on here experienced this problem AND havent yet been resolved.)

I tried system restore(couldnt get to the page with the image restore, etc because it goes to a blank screen), last known good settings, safe mode, diagnostic, AND I EVEN TRIED TO FORMAT IT WITH THE OPERATING SYSTEM REINSTALLATION DVD (using run dvd on f12), but all that happened was that it took me back to dell booting screen where after waiting awhile goes into a blank screen with a cursor. (OR IS THIS NOT THE CORRECT WAY TO FORMAT?) THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM http://en.community.dell.com/forums/......cs=19&s=dhs is experiencing, and I dont believe his harddrive is broken.

I recently tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate on to a separate IDE Hard Drive but I have failed. I unplugged everything but just my DVD Drive and Hard Drive from the motherboard (the DVD Drive is connected to the Hard Drive through a IDE Cable to the motherboard).

I pressed F12 to boot from the DVD Drive and started the installation. Everything was going fine with the installation, I got to where it says preparing your pc for first use, I get to a "Welcome" screen, then it says "Shutting Down" immediately after. The pc reboots but fails to load up Windows 7 at all, it just reboots in a loop with nothing. I've tried reinstalling again and again and I cant get past this.

Anybody got any ideas as to why this is happening?

Try booting into Safe Mode to update your display driver.

Check for any other drivers in error in Device Manager.

Check also the Event Viewer or Diagnostics>Performance log for logged errors revealing the cause of shutdown.

Hello everybody.

I have a HP 650 notebook that i'm trying to use Windows 7 on. My entire issue started yesterday, i wanted to install steam on it,it all went well i restarted my pc and surprise ,it would just reboot over and over.

Can't even get on the windows login screen, tried to repair via windows cd. No use. Ok i reinstalled windows, its all fine that until i try to reintall ANY other software that does not come with windows,be it a new browser, drivers, games etc.

So it all seems ok until i install any other piece of software,if i do my windows refuses to boot. What is causing this issue ? Is there any way to fix it ?

Notbook has some integrated tests for memory and HDD. Tried them both and they said hardware has no issue. Please help if possible, thank you.

I have bought a new PC with an intel q6700 chip, 4 gigs of ram and a terrabyte of storage. I have just installed a copy of windows xp professional on it and other software that I use for music and image production that have never given me problems on my old machine. Today as I was working on some music my computer just flashed up a message too quick for me to read and then the screens went black.
When I restarted my computer my machine started making a loud beeping noise repeatedly and not going through the beeping process. I cannot get to the bios stage or boot from disc. Has anyone any ideas what may have caused this?

A:Computer wont boot after installing windows XP SP2

Does the screen show anything when you turn the computer on ? If it does then tell us what's the last message you see. If not then it's probably some hardware problem. Turn the computer off, unplug the power cable and open the computer case. Remember to touch a metal part of the case to discharge your own electricity before you touch any internal component. Check that the cpu heatsink is correctly seated and doesn't move at all. Take the memory sticks out and leave only one in the first slot (closer to the CPU). Check that the video card is correctly seated. Turn the computer on and check that all the fans are spinning.

I have an HP Omen Laptop from late 2015 with a gtx 1050 and an I7-7700hq, It's warranty has expired so I cannot get help from the HP support can you please help me?

I installed a new Samsung 960 EVO this morning in the NVME slot in my computer, it's installation went without a hitch and I made sure to ground myself and not damage any of the parts, I've built computers in the past so I know a little about what I'm doing.

After installing the SSD however I loaded into a screen displaying the HP Omen sign and a loading symbol underneath it which would go on for hours, I assumed that something was wrong with it, and after looking at forums with other people in my situation I found that I probably wasn't booting windows off of the right drive. I attempted to open my bios to fix this however I couldn't find a boot menu so, by pressing F10 when starting the computer I opened windows advanced boot settings, and tried to troubleshoot in there, I didn't find anything and restored my changes.

Directly after this I got a message saying that windows was starting automatic repair and in an act of complete stupidity in hindsight without knowing anything about what I was doing tried to reinstall windows thinking that it would reinstall to the right drive and boot fine *sigh*.

Yesterday, i installed norton onto my family computer, which runs Windows SP3. I had already done this with my laptop(which I am having to use now), so I knew what to expect. I also decided to renew my subscription. At the time, everything worked, but within two hours my brother came and told me the speakers had stopped working. After a minute of tinkering with them, I got them to work again, but now in the control panel it says no audio device available. huh. ok. A few hours later, the same thing happened. I told my brother to reboot the computer, but by this time it was around 1 am, so he decided to just shut it down and go to bed. This morning, he woke me up, saying the computer wouldnt boot. I tried rebooting several times, and so far, nothing. Right after the initial boot screen, i get 3 system beeps, and windows doesn't even try to load. No splash screen, nothing. I can't even boot in safe mode. I can go to setup, and I can change boot device, otherwise, it just goes to a black screen. Also, the usb mouse stops working as soon as the initial boot screen goes away. Before yesterday, none of this was a problem. If anyone can give me some insight it would be greatly appreciated.

I just install windows 8 using BIOS , but now i want to change it to UEFI boot. so i followed steps below
1.create and format a new FAT32 partition K:
2.my windows8 is in I: so , i use this command bcdboot i:\windows /f all /s k: and succeeded.
3.i checked with the bootice about the BCD in my K: and found it indeed point to i:\windows\ just like the picture below

4. and i restart, choose uefi boot in BIOS configuration and it showed like this:

5. i checked my k:/windows/system32/ , there is a winload.efi file...
The most strange thing is that i've copyed my winload.efi to other computer which is already in UEFI mode , and also i've copyed it in my virtual machine, it works fine! So my winload.efi should be OK. Then what the hell is it going on?
anyone who can give me a suggestion?

I've just refit my old computer in a new case as a present for my step-son. It has a new hard drive and a fresh install of Windows XP Home. I installed all the motherboard drivers, restarted and then installed the nvidia graphics drivers (the latest ones downloaded from the website) and restarted again.

I got the windows logo on the black screen and the blue bar went accross as normal. Then the screen went black and the a 'lighter black' (if you know what I mean) and I got the cursor thats a pointer and an egg timer - sometimes this screen will stay for a maybe 30 seconds and then the computer will reboot, other times it will just stay at this screen until I press the reset button.

It will boot in safe mode and vga mode. If I uninstall the nvidia drivers, it boots fine again.

Any suggestions?

This is not an issue with my hardware. My Macbook Pro works fine for other versions of Operating Systems. I think the takeaway here is to go straight to windows 10. After successfully migrating my physical machine to a VM and installing the latest VMWare
Tools, the mouse works but not the keyboard. I have tried removing the usb controller and devices on both the VM and the windows guest without any luck.

In the interim, my fix is to use VNC to control the guest. I am going to try and upgrade to Windows 10 to see if there is any difference. This is definitely a fault in the drivers on Microsoft's behalf..

Hi there,

I've recently built a new rig and I've had continuous problems trying to boot. I have two HDDs and one SDD. It seems when the two HDDs are plugged in, i can sometimes boot ok, and most times i get:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Status: 0xc000000e

Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible

Please select a boot device, or something to the affect.

I've updated to the latest bios on my new mobo ( Gigabyte z97x SOC Force ) and ive done a fresh install of windows several times on the SDD. I also ran crystal disk to check health on the SDD and it came back healthy.

It seems mostly my boot problems are linked to plugging in the two other HDDs, though I've no idea why this would be, and how to fix it? Is it a motherboard problem or a HDD problem?

Any help greatly appreciated.

An issue Ive been having for weeks has now turned into an even bigger nightmare. Weeks ago I reset Windows 10 (which was working fine before), as a last resort due to an unrelated issue which was fixed. Since the reset I started having daily computer lock ups where the screen would stay on, but the mouse & keyboard would fail & their lights would stop one by one after a minute or so of being frozen. I tried any driver updates I could possibly do and tried many suggestions from other forums (checking cpu temps, cc cleaner and malware scans, disabling avast, system restores), nothing stopped the freezes.

Then suddenly I went 5 days with no freezes, until randomly yesterday out of the blue it happened again. I been suspecting possible AMD driver issues since device manager would not update beyond 15.21, so I tried following some method from AMD website for manually updating to 15.7. I downloaded some AMD uninstaller and ran it in safe mode. When I reboot to finish the procedure, thats when my mouse & keyboard shut off always as soon as windows loads to login screen. They work fine when I hotkey into startup via ESC and in the blue recovery menu with all the restore, refresh, and troubleshooting options. But as soon as I let the pc continue to load windows, they die out. Also F8 does nothing, though F-10 opens HP utility. Im sure some drivers have been deleted or messed up, I cannot find a way to fix the issue without use of my keyboard and mouse. I can do anything ... Read more

This computer was running fine until a few days ago. I decided to add a little more RAM. There were already two 128MB sticks in it, so I got two more 128MB sticks of the same type, even the same brand. Now, this mobo can use either ECC or non ECC RAM. In the BIOS, theres a setting for ECC or non ECC, and it was set to non ECC. So, I bought two non ECC sticks. When I was installing them, I noticed that the two sticks already in the PC WERE ECC. Since the BIOS was set for non ECC I figured the two sticks I got would work fine with the original two. So, I installed them and powered the computer on. It POST and counted the right amount of memory. But, the computer hangs just before its suppose to boot the hard drive.

The first thing I did was change the boot order in the BIOS, I made the hard drive first. Didn't work. So, I took out the two new RAM sticks (from this point on, everything I've tried is with the original RAM sticks). The computer still wouldn't boot from the hard drive. I tried reinserting the IDE cable on the mobo and hard drive end. I tried using the hard drive on the secondary IDE instead of the primary. I then tried swapping the cables, still wont boot. So, I popped in the XP CD and the computer did boot the CD drive. I wanted to run the diagnostics from the XP CD but when I got up to entering my administrator password it was telling me my p... A:boot problems,....keyboard wont work....

Are these PS/2 or USB mouse and keyboard?
If USB, it sounds like the USB drivers got corrupted since the keyboard works to open BIOS setup, but fails once Windows launches.
Reboot and press F8 before XP starts to load. Choose "Last Known Good" from the menu. If mouse and keyboard work and you get to the desktop, shut down normally and reboot normally. You'll  be good to go.
If that doesn't work, reboot and press F8. This time select "Safe Mode with Networking" from the list. If keyboard works, you may be able to fix this by running a System Restore from Safe Mode by picking a restore point before the problem started. Personal files and software won't be affected, but you will have to reinstall any updates or hotfixes originally installed after the date used for the restore.
If Safe Mode doesn't work, you'll need to run a Repair/Reinstall of XP.  You'll need a Windows XP Reinstallation CD with the same version of Windows as on the hard drive, eg SP2 or SP3. Personal files and software won't be affected but you will have to reinstall most/all XP updates and hotfixes again.
EDIT: If either Last Good or Safe Mode work, be sure to run chkdsk /f  on the drive from a Cmd Prompt window to check for errors. If you have to run a Repair/Reinstall of XP using the CD, you should launch the  Recovery Console first, and run chkdsk /r before you do the Repair/Reinstall to make sure any errors on the driv... My operating system is Vista and I have an ASUS P5L-MX motherboard.

I have a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard (that connect via a USB bluetooth device) that have worked fine for over 6 months, but then all of a sudden windows kept rebooting spontaneously. I switched to a PS/2 mouse and keyboard that then worked perfectly. When I went back to the wireless it failed again. However, if I leave the PS/2 keyboard in (without the mouse) I can use the wireless mouse and keyboard without problem. I have tried a different USB mouse and keyboard in all of these situations and know that it's not specifically the logitech mouse and keyboard causing the problem.

Long story short, my computer crashes and restarts if I unplug the PS/2 keyboard while it's running, and Vista won't boot up if I start the computer without the PS/2 keyboard plugged in. Is there any way to fix this, or will I have to just keep the second keyboard plugged in and hidden away until I reinstall windows?

Also, I don't need to hear to fact that my wireless keyboard is not secure.

Hi, I replaced the graphics card and PSU on my HP Pavilion 500-199 with an XFX Radeon HD 6870 and an EVGA 500W PSU. Before i replaced the card, I uninstalled the previous graphics card drivers already. When i boot the computer, there would be no signal on the monitor, however i can see all of the fans spinning inside the pc. I tried switching back to the old graphics card and psu that came with the computer, but the monitor still shows no signal. I have tried resetting the CMOS by moving the jumpers and resetting the battery. The mouse and keyboard would also get no connection. Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks

i installed KIS 2010 last week and updated the database when it got to 100% it kept downloading for a long time so i tried to exit and restart my computer, screen then froze so i pressed reset button on my tower. now when i boot it gets to windows logo and resets. when i boot in safe mode it stops at KLBG.SYS. so i deleted all files in system32\drivers\ that start with "kl" (kaspersky files about 8) now when i boot in safe mode it stops at MUP.SYS

ive researched for the last week and nothing has worked. any ideas??

A:[SOLVED] xp wont boot after installing KIS 2010

Push F8 on startup and try last known good configuration that worked. You can also try system restore as well. One of those ought to get you a good boot. If not you can troubleshoot some more or just go ahead and do a repair install of windows xp. Unlike vista and 7, you can do a repair install of XP even if the windows install isn't booting. If you choose a repair install you'll need your XP disc and google 'xp repair install' you'll find plenty of walkthrus on how to do tha it's prett strait foward. eDIT: for future referance don't delete any files from the system folders, theres no need and most of the time it will cause more problems than good. If you want to unnstall a failed virus installation software you should use the uninstaller for that software roght from the manufacturers website.

Hi guys,
My XP computer (Dell dimension 5000) has been playing up alot recently and now after going to blue screen once more i can no longer boot up at all,
Now everytime i boot up, my computer loads up untill the windows logo (splash?) screen and then goes to blue screen almost instantly.
Now i would try and reinstall XP using the CD but i cant find it ANYWHERE, i do however have a vista startup disc.
Ive tried booting the computer with the vista CD then pressing F12 to go to the boot up menu. However when i select "onboard USB or CD_ROM drive" e message appears below, "fress f1 to continue or f2 to run setup utility"
then when i press f1 to continue another message appears below saying press f1 to reboot and f2 to run setup utility. pressing F1 gives the same message and f2 takes me to this blue screen with setup information and other options.
Basically i cant get my computer to load up at all, and seeing as ive lost the XP disc (careless i know) is it possible to install vista on it rather than reinstalling XP?
If not does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can fix my computer, or at least get it to boot?
I have tried running it in safe mode nd last known good configuration and all that but still no success, i ran a few diagnostics which said the hard drive is fine.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I'm totally clueless in this department so a step by step would be helpfull,

Hi, I just installed a new asus motherboard. Fired up computer, fan and lights would go but no signal to the monitor. Have tried a few diffirent things with no luck. Please help! New motherboard! Thanks, Matt

A:Computer wont boot after installing new motherboard.

Ok based on you telling us nothing but the brand name of the mobo, there is really not much to say back except reseat the ram if you are using any(I wouldn't know), and the video card if it has one...cut back to board, 1 ram stick, psu plugs (usually 2), and video and see wwhat happens. You have board mounted on standoffs right?

I am using a Dell computer, with Windows Vista 32 bit.

My former hard drive was corrupted, so I got a brand new hard drive, installed Windows Vista 32 bit, and began downloading updates. Clearly, there were a lot of updates, but when all the recommended updates were down, I selected optional ones that consisted of the Anti-Spyware, silverlight, one other, and Service Pack 2.

When I downloaded them, and installed them, it prompted me to restart, of course.

However, the computer stayed at the black screen with the moving bar in the middle, saying "Microsoft Corporation" on it. I gave it plenty of time, having left and come back about 2 hours later.

Turning my computer off and trying again didn't help.

looking at some forums, I restarted it, again, and boot it in Safe Mode, which it did. While in windows Safe Mode, it showed Service Pack 2 installed, but I opened system restore, to restore my computer prior to the installation of SP 2. I began the process, and it shut down and began restarting, again, but it ended up going to the exact same screen.

Then, I rebooted it, tried to enter safe mode again (my plan was to remove the update, that I read you could do somewhere), but then it just ended up restarting and going to the same place again.

Then, I inserted the windows CD, and boot it from there, and selected "Repair Computer", which it went through some steps, suggested system restore, which I said yes to (there was, in fact, a restore point before th... Read more

Hi Everyone,
I'm desperate need of help and Dell Support is closed and I am at my witts end!!!
My laptop is only 2 months old and just will not work.
Last night I opened my laptop to wake it from standby. I typed in my password and it advised it was incorrect. I then realised some of my keys were not working. I then restarted the computer and got to the password stage but then the whole keyboard was unresponsive.
I then dusted off my 7 year old laptop from the cupboard and started googling solutions, so heres what I have done so far.
- First, unplugged the AC power and removed battery, held power button for a few seconds then replaced battery and AC power and pressed power. Laptop would not turn on at all.
 - Removed battery and AC power again replaced battery and powered on with AC power and computer did turn on but will not go pass Dell Screen. The status bar loads til the end but then doesn't go anywhere.
- Turned off and on many times while pressing F12, F8, F2, Fn a combination of these but keyboard is still unresponsive so does not work.
- I do not have a USB keyboard so unable to try this option.
- Next tip was to load with Drivers disk that come with the laptop inserted but also no  luck. You can hear that the disk is trying to read but stops. I then could not eject the disk as again keyboard unresponsive.
I then gave up and left it overnight.
- I tried to turn on the next morning (disk still in drive) but same thing, stalls on Dell screen... Read more

Did you recently add and new hardware or update any drivers?
Shutdown the computer. Unplug it from the ac adapter. Remove the battery and press the power button for 30 seconds. Put the battery back in. Does the computer startup?
You could restart your computer and try tapping F8 and try entering the safe mode. If you get in that way, then try start, all programs, accessories, right click on the command prompt, left click run as administrator. Type
chkdsk /r          (space between the k and /)
Hit enter. Answer with a y, then restart your computer. Let chkdsk run until you see the login screen.

Friend of mine gave me her Acer Aspire 5742z-4813 because it fails to boot and eventually asks to repair, which it doesn't. Can't enter safe-mode, either.

Only thing she's said is that her daughter installed Norton 360 a few days before it crashed.

Things I've tried:

At command prompt, ran the following with no effect: bootrec.exe /FixMbr, bootrec.exe /FixBoot, bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd, chkdsk /f E:, and finally chkskd /f /r /x.

I also entered BIOS and changed HDD mode to IDE from ACHI. No joy.

Thanks in advance, guys.

I'm a little baffled on what's going on and hoping someone can shed some light... I bought a couple things for xmas to upgrade my little brothers PC and everything works fine except for the video card I bought him. I had installed 2gbs of ram and a new power supply to work with the video card however when I put in the card the computer turns on but nothing loads up. There's no beeps and the monitor doesnt even turn on.

I put the card into my pc just to make sure it wasnt the card and it works fine for my pc so the card checks out.

The video card is a EVGA 8600gt 256mb ddr3 and the power supply is 500w which i think is plenty for this card.

Basic specs for the pc are 2.8ghz, 3gb ram
And the power supply is a APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 i believe 12v1 -16a and 12v2 - 18a.
