Q: Anti-virus Recommendations Needed

I've tried McAfee and Nortons. I actually preferred McAfee. Supposedly it's free, so how do i keep it active without paying for it?
Any antivirus recommendations would be appreciated too.
Thx ahead,,,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I currently use Norton, is it updated and working fine but I dont think that it is getting all of the spyware etc. What is a recommended program for antivirus and antispyware? I tired to remove Norton on different computer and ran into a lot of problems. Any suggestions on removing Norton before installing any other type of antivirus software? Thanks.

Up until now, I've relied pretty much on free anti-virus programs, and they have served me pretty well. But over the last year I've been attacked twice by malware that basically forced me to reinstall Windows. While I've taken plenty of precautions to back up my data and haven't lost anything by reinstalling, it is an incredible hassle to deal with. I've begun to wonder whether I might be able to get better protection with a subscription anti-virus service. Money isn't really an object. I'm looking for something non-intrusive that doesn't hog system resources and is very minimalist but effective. Something I can also easily shut off temporarily (like to improve performance for gaming) would be nice too. Can I get some recommendations from those of you who are extremely experienced in the field? Tell me about your anti-virus and why you like it?

Happy New Year All,

I need to renew my anti-virus subscription shortly and have not been happy with Norton AV. I have been considering AVG and Kaspersky. Monetarily AVG seems the better value at about $33 for a 2 year subscription while Kaspersky is $66/year if they are both equally good.
Anyone have any thought or suggestions on these or other AV software

My laptop came with a trial of Norton Internet Security and even though I purchased a full version of Norton Internet Security along with my laptop, I don't wish to install it as it slowed my old computer down DRASTICALLY. (I installed it on my old computer because I decided I wouldn't install the full version until the trial ran out)

I heard Kaspersky was really good so I purchased the most recent version online, but I encountered a problem. When I went to install it, it 'suggested' that I uninstall Spybot S&D and Spyware Doctor. Since I have been using these programs for a LONG time and I was totally loyal to them, I declined the uninstall...but it uninstalled them anyway.

Needless to say that was money wasted.

Before Norton, I used McAfee on my old computer and it was very good. Should I purchase the newest version of McAfee or is there a better anti-virus out there?

Thanks in advance.

i've been using AVG and norton 360 for a while now, but i recently got myself a copy of zone alarm 7.1 and i got a lot of feedback saying that norton 360 and zone alarm can't work together. should i use norton 360 or zone alarm 7.1? i'm running vista home premium.

problem with asking about norton 360 is that a lot of people base their opinions of it on past experiences with other norton products. however, norton 360 is completely different from the other norton products, having been reworked from the ground up, so comparisons with past experiences would be unfair. please be unbiased.=) thank you!

A:recommendations for anti-virus?

Wait until the Norton subscription runs out,
then use AVG with Comodo firewall or Kerio or Zone Alarm.

Norton 360 may well be better than previous Norton efforts,
but you still have to pay $ 100 for it.

If your sensible on the internet, you don`t need to pay anything for security..

I'd like to know of a complete software that I can buy and not have to "subscribe" to annually to get updates. I have used Norton but find it a bit overbearing in all that it interconnects with. McAffee is the other I have had bundled with computer purchases and I am a bit ambivalent about. I really like Symantec information but haven't pursued information regarding it having software available. Is it wiser to keep utility software separate or bundled with virus software?

Hello guys. I don't have a virus question this time around (thank goodness), but i do need some recommendations. Im looking for a good anti-virus program (paid or otherwise) for netbooks that have a small footprint (AKA doesn't take up too much space on the hard drive) and doesn't use up too much memory/cpu power to run (something i can tweak to desired effects would be fine). Im growing more concerned about security on the netbooks i have come in, but the anti-virus programs are either take up too much space and power to run (Like Kaspersky) or doesn't stop enough of the malware and viruses coming through to be effective (Like Avast free). im open to all options, and i will consider them as they come in. A:Recommendations for Anti-Virus Software

You ask a question that we get asked many times. Due to that fact our very own quietman7 has created a pinned topic covering that for you: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/407147/answers-to-common-security-questions-best-practices/#entry2316629I excerpted the specific information about AV software in the link. However that whole thread is excellent material.

A:Server Anti-Virus Protection Recommendations

What do you think your boss wants of an AV product?
And why are you going towards Kaspersky?

I'm asking because selecting an AV for a server is very different than selecting an AV for a home user.

How many servers do you have? Do you need centralized management of the AV?
Are these "real" servers, or do people also log on to them and use them as a workstation?
Are the servers mission critical?

These are some questions you should ask yourself.

Hello all,

After spending full 4 days and about 5 separate anti virus programs to rid my work PC of a google-redirect virus,I am fed-up. I want to just buy ONE realtime program that will secure my PC WHILE I am browsing online without slowing down my browsing sessions too badly. With the 4 days productivity shot I could almost justify buying a Mac, but my company sells a Windows-based software package, so I am hesitant about totally chunking the PC altogether.
It seems that I end up using Malwarebytes about twice a month on my various computers, so I was going to just buy the full version of that, but lately that will only complete Full scans when I boot into safe mode for some reason. I have used Norton in the past with lackluster results. MS Security Essentials and AVG seem to be worthless against catching the "windows 7 Antivirus 2011" style viruses that I always seem to get.

Any recommendations? I am not expecting perfection on this, but there has to be SOMETHING out there better than all the stuff I usually use.

A:experienced anti-virus program recommendations?

There is no BEST option - as you correctly surmise, everyone has his or her own opinion. Several years ago I standardized all of my systems with Kaspersky Anti Virus and I couldn't be happier. Needless to say, if you don't practice "smart computing" it doesn't much matter which AV you use - you'll be able to infect your system somehow

Well if your willing to pay for an Antivirus... I find NOD32 to be the best out there.. It's not a memory hog and is simply amazing .. so many features..
For firewalls COMODO firewall Pro. which is free.. is the best on the market right now for free firewalls... Only Con I give it is that i didn't install it fast enough
I'm not too sure if COMODO is compatible with vista though, but its worth a try.

I have done a search but couldn't find anything relevant.

for the last few months I have had AVG Antivirus (free version) installed on my PC as I had been having compatibility problems between Avast and my Comodo Firewall. When it was first installed it would tell me it had checked approx 250,000 files/items every morning after finishing it's daily scheduled check. This was a similar amount to Avast. The last 2-3 weeks however it will check between 80-109,000 files. I opened up the box marked "Scan Selected Areas" and found that the only box ticked was the one at the bottom saying "Other Settings" and a sub box was ticked here saying"Scan System Areas before the test starts". Just as a test I put a tick in all the boxes on this screen and did a test. Result of this selected areas scan was that AVG checked 271,560 files as opposed to the 89,937 files checked on this mornings Complete test Scheduled scan.

I'm not sure why AVG doesn't check the complete PC as it did before and possibly this is how it is supposed to operate but can anyone point me to a tutorial or such like for AVG Antivirus similar to the one found on this site for Avast.

A:Avg Anti-virus Help Needed

If you want everything scanned, then click on "Scan Computer" at the top; if you want only one drive, or selected folders scanned, then click on "Scan Selected Areas." Using the latter, you can select (or deselect) folders to scan by opening the appropriate drive.
For example, I have two drives on my computer. I do not scan, normally, the D: drive, since this contains data transfered from my C: drive and thus already scanned. I use "selected areas" to skip the D: drive and thus save time.

I had to dump Norton...subscription due and I was told that running both might cause conflicts. AVG free version did not cover e-mail, so I was encouraged to try avast! Then I dumped AVG, too.

OK It's been over 24 hours and this question went almost to the bottom of page 6...time to "bump" and update anyone who knows this program.
The post has been read quite a few times, but no one has responded, one way or the other.

I did another scan:

Win32Kuang2 found in C:\\WINDOWS\system32\ActiveScan\imscan.dll > file was (again) repaired successfully

By the way, is this ^^^ anything to do with Panda and why I cannot do on line scans from their site?

Win32:Rovop[Trj] found in C:\\WINDOWS\system32\...10b66s.dll\[UPX] > error occurred while moving to chest.

When I look at the virus chest, the items previously listed in attachment are there.
What to do?
Should I un-install this program and go back to AVG?
I will just have to be very careful with incoming e-mail as AVG has no protection for that.

Thanks in advance for any help

Recently some interesting articles were published on the use of anti-virus software for smartphones. The links are listed below:
(1) Paper by Georgia Institute of Tech. & Damballa - "Analyzing Malicious Traffic in Cellular Carriers"
(2) Antone Gonsalves - "Let's dump anti-virus software and move on"
(3) Economist magazine, 12.03.13 - "Thief in your pocket?"
The crux of the above is that the rate of malware infection in mobile devices is so slight that the use of AV software is not warranted. Reference #1 concluded from their study that the rate of infection is approximately 0.0009% of mobile devices. Reference #3 concludes that as long as mobile device users acquire apps from Google and Apple app stores, and practice safe surfing habits, these users should not worry about mobile device malware.
I am interested if anyone has counter arguments. Do you agree that AV software is not needed? Is there something missing from these arguments? Comments?

A:best FREE firewall, anti virus & ANY other protection needed

For a person who does not need the detail of a 3d-party firewall...the XP/Windows firewall does the job. There is no best firewall, but some create fewer problems than others on systems. There is no best AV program...a number of them work quite well. IMO, the weakness with AV programs...lies in the fact that users don't necessarily keep them updated, which can make them ineffective against any recent version of malware or any form of malware which is more recent than the AV definitions installed.BC has a forum I believe that you should visit, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/25/antivirus-firewall-and-privacy-products-and-protection-methods/. Does anyone at these forums have any programmes to recommend or suggest, including those I have listed?I don't want to fall victim to all the nasties lurking out on the wide web and update every day and scan every couple of days at least.
A response would be appreciated.Thanx in anticipation....

I've just been 'talking' extensively with the software side, & we basically came to the conclusion that my current ancient computer is on the outs & doesn't have long to live. It cannot be upgraded.
I'd like to build a new one from scratch. Although I'm a novice & have never tried this at home, I did take an A+ course last year so am not totally unprepared.
I've been browsing on Pricewatch.com...I'd like to buy a motherboard combo (P4, at least 2.0Ghz) w/ integrated sound (upgradeable), USB 2.0, DDR SDRAM, heatsink & fan, a case/power supply combo, a video card with at min. 64mb ram (I'm not a serious gamer) and a hard drive--at least ATA 100 & 40Gb. I'd just like any suggestions/recommendations/cautions from anyone who's done this before & really knows what they're doing, so I don't screw it up. I'd appreciate any tips anyone wants to give me on products, etc. Oh yeah, I'd like to keep my Win ME & load it on the new HDD, mainly because I resent the fact that Microsoft won't let me put XP on more than one computer (if this is a dumb idea, please tell me why) Thanks!

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'm completely new to these forums, so hello! I'm hoping someone out there can help me with the following problems. It's a doozy, and has completely gotten worse over the last few days. Please read on...

My computer at home contracted a particularly nasty virus. The computer initially ran slower than molasses (probably from spyware/adware/virus), so my wife and I have been attempting to fix this problem. It was totally *my* fault, as I went on a gaming website and it downloaded some content that's now choking the life out of the computer.

I recently attempted to install new virus protection. Now, the computer is telling me that the copy of Windows XP I have is an illegal copy (which is NOT true, it was legitimately bought), and that I need to validate the copy. My wife has the administrative privileges on the computer, so I could only get so far this morning in fixing the problem. Compounding problems are the anti virus program I installed is failing to initialize, and sometimes Windows Explorer crashes, and leaves me with just the background picture, but no desktop whatsoever.

The CD rom drive still works, albeit slowely (takes forever to load the contents of a CD). I am a complete newbie when it comes to these types of errors. We have a lot of stuff on the computer that needs to be saved, so a "do or die" reinstall won't be feasible, as we don't want to lose everything we have on the computer. I think... Read more

Hello everyone.

I have tried my best to remove this virus on my laptop, but no success yet.

Here are all of the things the virus does:

-Prevents access to websites like spybot, instead of letting me see the site, it simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", and there is a button to click that says "Diagnose Connection Problem" (no connection problem of course)

-When I click links from a google search, they most of the time take me to the wrong webpage and I am forced to copy/paste the original link into the web bar.

-Programs like Combofix, Spybot, and HJT do not work and a box comes up after starting them saying "Combofix has stopped working".

-I tried running the programs in Safe Mode, but no luck there.

If anyone knows a fix please reply.

I renamed my Combofix to something else and I followed the instructions from a different post and here is the log I ended up with:

I currently use a Seagate 5TB portable drive to store basically everything (my Lightroom Catalog & photos, my videos, documents, music etc), so this means very little is stored on my Mac HD, and doesn't slow it down, especially when doing post-production on photos or video. The drive was formatted to exFat when I bought it, and this means that when I was travelling between home, work and college I could plug my drive into any machine (Win or Mac) I can access my LR catalog and edit my work anywhere.

However, the drive is almost full, and I wanted to upgrade to a larger portable drive (at least 8TB). However I am finding it difficult to find an 8TB drive that doesn't require an external power source. It's not a problem at home just plugging the power lead into a socket, but in work or college there often aren't accessible sockets within reach, so it's vital that the 8TB drive can do the same as my current 5TB drive and take its power from the Mac itself.

I did order the following: https://www.photospecialist.ie/lacie-porsche-design-p-9233-8tb-drive-usb-3-0#group5315
It seemed to fix the bill, because it's USB 3.0, although it has a USB-C socket, which I've not seen on any drives before. I think it's meant to suit people connecting to their Macbooks or phones. However after I ordered I discovered that the drive needs an external power source, and also I found a lot of reviews online on Amazon where people were complaining about the... Read more

I'm in the market to transfer a domain from fptoday.com to a new hosting company. My present one doesn't support perl, cgi-bin, asp, etc. Plus they want $145 for a secure site certificate. While I was surfing, I found this one:

My laptop has only two USB ports, which quickly turns into a shortage given all the things that connect to USB. With literally thousands of hubs available, I'm hoping someone has some personal experience on the subject that they could share. Which manufacturers are more reliable than others? What types of hardware have shown to be ugly when connecting through a hub.

I need to get one, so if I have to go solo on this, I guess I'll be the guinea pig. I'll be buying like 10 at a time to try several.

Hi ladies and gentleman...

I'm fairly confident in that I'm not the only one who is wondering about which fans are reliable and whether or not they truly make a difference from one another.

I was just wondering, which 80mm fans, which 120mm fans, and which 92mm fans people recommend...

Thank you.

A:Fans - Recommendations needed :)

i may not have recommendations for 80 and 92mm fans but i just want to say a few things.

try and get a fan that has low dBa but high CFM. higher CFM is usually accompanied by higher dBa (more noise) unless its a 120mm which runs on lower RPMs but provide more CFM for the RPM because if its bigger fins.

on avg, i guess a 28 dBa is silent enough for most people (esp me) and dBa:CFM ratio arent so good on smaller fans compared to 120mm fans persay
avg dBA and CFM on 80mm fans are 30 and 34. having a few of these in ur case can get pretty annoying (maybe its jus the ones i had, they were ghetto fans by sunbeam)

sleeve bearings vs ball bearings
sleeve is quieter but less life
ball is bit more noise but longer life. its all up to u n ur preferences.

in terms of brands, im not so sure, jus dont pick a 2$ fan. u get what u pay for.

anyway im not sure if any of what i wrote make much sense... i need to go to sleep now lol gnight

Right now I am using MailWasher Pro as an Spam filter. The problem is I get so much spam that I've pretty much filtered out everything except what is in my address book. The problem, of course, is that I might miss a message from someone that I need. So I was wondering what other people are using and how you address that problem. I was thinking of a program that would send a message back to the person telling them they need to send an e-mail in a certain way to get it validated. I was thinking the spammers would get the same message, but they don't check the returns because of the volume. Also, I was thinking I could tell them to send an e-mail to a different e-mail address (my work e-mail, for example) so I can validate them.

Any ideas on how to filter out everything except people in your address book and make sure new people who send e-mails know you didn't

I've built a couple of computers, troubleshot them when their was problems, had probably hundreds of hours of maintenance/gaming on them, and have loved every minute!
Building a computer is too much fun to consider buying one complete.
But it has been a few years since I have done this, and I am having some problems ferreting out the new boards, etc., and would appreciate some advice.

I am building a computer not for anything specific, but need it to have enough power and RAM to be able to play with pictures, and video if desired.

I was thinking about getting an Asus with an AMD processor, 3000-4000 processor, 800 MB front side bus, and 1 GIG of DDR RAM. I didn't know if the different types of sockets made much of a difference, these days. I have always run AMD, and don't know about the different kinds of Intel processors.

I have been told to get a hard drive, SATA2, at least 160GB, with a minimum of 8MB cache, I assume 7200 RPM minimum.

Case/power supply combination, I don't know how many watts is even considered normal these days.

DVD Burner- don't think this is a biggie as to which brand, but may want a multi-layered one for backup purposes

Along with the normal modem, there is a chance that this may be set up a a server for a network at my house, eventually. So, if I didn't get the components as an integral part of the motherboard, I would need enough slots to expand.

Finally, I know that I can make a real screamer for over $1000, but ... Read more
