I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, my computer at home is constantly freezing every single time I start the computer up. It gets to the screen where you can click on a user to login but then it freezes and to restart I need to hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds. I looked through all of my discs and all I have is my Camera Setup, Windows 95, Printer Setup, Acer Recovery Discs (5 of them) and an Acer eMode Management disc. The only thing I have tried so far is to use the Acer Recovery discs but the problem still persists. I have no Windows XP disc and I can't remember getting one when I bought the computer but I might have it somewhere. I'm not sure if it came with the computer because the Acer Recovery discs basically re-installed Windows itself.

It all started when I was on the computer and a storm hit us and there was a power outage while I was on the computer. Since then it just freezes at the login screen. Ask questions and give any suggestions you can give, it is all appreciated as I am desperate to get this fixed! I have no important files on the computer so a reset of the whole computer is fine to do but what discs do I need and how do I do it. I am unsure if it is a virus related problem or a hardware related issue.

My computer freezes at startup on the Windows XP logo screen. When I restart, I choose "start windows normally" and the PC will boot as it should. This has happened a couple times, but doesn't happen everyday.

A:Computer freezes at Windows XP logo

Check when you get into Windows that the time and date are correct on the taskbar.
If they are NOT post back.

If they are open My Computer, right click the HDD, click properties, click Tools, click Error checking, click check now, click to check BOTH boxes - file system errors and bad sectors.
Click Start, agree to run on restart and do so.
This is a five stage check. I twill take sometime. Do Not interrupt it.

On completion and back in Windows, open Control Panel, administrative functions. event viewer and click application in the left pane, in the main window, scroll to Winlogon. That will be the chkdsk results.
Please screenshot them

My lady friend gave me her computer to fix. She gave me everything but the power cables, which I had, so I plugged everything in and started it up just fine. I checked the sound, which was the original reason she gave it to me to check out, worked fine. After about 20 minutes, the display went off. I had to turn the computer off by holding down the power button. I tried rebooting it again the next day and I am met with this:

http://tinypic.com/r/jslyds/6

I waited it out and the computer just reboots after about 10 minutes and freezes again at that logo screen.

I tried going into safe mode and this happened:

http://tinypic.com/r/2076gxi/6

I attempt to login in safe mode and the computer just reboots.

As far as system specs go I don't know them. Wasn't able to reboot to check.

Any idea why this is happening?

I have a computer that my friend asked me to look at because I'm usually the person people ask to fix little things with their computers. Replace screens, install new parts, remove malware, help them set it up, etc.. But this computer is driving me mad and I cannot figure out what needs to be done with it at this point. I would like to be able to tell my friend if they should just buy a new computer, a new part, or if it can be fixed.

The issue is the computer will not boot. It will load past the BIOS screen, but when it says "Loading Windows" it will just freeze and not go any further. I tried to boot it into Safe Mode, and it will load until CLASSPNP.SYS then freeze again. No startup option goes past the Windows loading screen, and selecting "launch computer repair" also just freezes the computer.

The computer is a Dell Vostro 260 and the things I have tried in no certain order are listed below:
I tried using a Windows installation disk to get to the repair option, but it freezes just like when the computer boots.
I tried using a Linux Live disc to access the hard drive, but the Linux splash screen displays for a split second and then a blank screen appears with a flashing underscore and it goes no further.
I removed all peripherals except the keyboard, still freezes.
I took out each stick of RAM individually to see if it boots, still freezes.
I removed the network card, which actually allowed the Windows logo to load a little bit more this ... Read more

Hi guys,

So, my computer has been working perfectly for around 2 years now, and just the other day I ran into a pretty annoying problem. Every time I boot up my computer, it'll go to a black screen where it lists by graphics card and bios version , and then it proceeds to a blue screen with the HP Logo in the center and the Intel logo on the bottom right- this is the screen where it gives options like F11 for system recovery, F9 for diagnostics etc. After a few seconds on this screen, the busy light on my computer will become solid orange and everything just freezes. It doesn't respond if I hit escape for boot menu, F11, F9, F8, anything. It will just stay at that screen for hours with the busy light still on. If I boot it up and try to quickly enter system restore or safe mode or setup or something, it'll say "Entering setup" on the bottom right, but then it'll freeze anyways, without ever moving away from the blue screen.

I have an a6500f HP Pavillion with Windows Vista 32 bit, a GeFroce 8600 GT OC card, intel dual core processors 1.8 Ghz and a 500 gb Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive (?).

It sounds like the HDD may be having trouble reading the boot sector and might need to be replaced. Have you tried using the "novo" button to enter BIOS and see if you have a HDD diagnostic you can use?  If you can enter BIOS, change out the boot order, try your USB and CD/DVD.  If it boots from USB or CD successfully then I would suspect a HDD issue, one that may require replacing the HDD to cure.CB

why does my computer sometimes freeze at the acer logo when starting up? its a year-old acer aspire am3985 desktop computer with windows 8. it has a decent chance of freezing at the acer logo (the first window seen when turning this computer on) every time i turn the computer on each morning, about a 25% chance i'd say, in which case i have to hold the power button til it shuts off, wait a bit, and try again. is there for example a known issue between acer aspire and windows 8 fixed by an update or patch or something?

Boot into Windows and go to Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and restart the computer. Check Disk will start at next bootup and go through 5 stages and it may take a while.

The computer is frozen and do not answer on Ctrl-Alt-Del n o mater how long I am waiting. The only way is to press on-off button and restart the system.

No BSOD at all.

Graphic card is new, changed by the ACER service.

I run Memtest86 - passed no errors. Memory 6GB.

I am occasionally running LINUX from CD or USB and the computer newer freezes in LINUX only in Windows 7. I am running different LINUX flavours mostly UBUNTU.

Talked several times with Acre support in UK (despite the fact that I am in Sweden) and reinstalled the system several times to the factory state.

Hi,
Recently I've booted up my old PC. Everything was going perfect, until some of my settings were messed up. I thought, "Okay, I'll just repair Windows with the CD." I used PowerISO to mount an ISO file of my XP CD (I don't have a CD drive), and then I ran sfc /scannow. I waited until it was done, and when it was nothing really happened. I decided to reboot, only to find out that it freezes at the boot logo. I've tried Safe Mode, but it freezes, too. I'm not exactly sure what I'm running on the system; all I know is that it has 256 MB of RAM, Windows XP Professional 2002 (I think).

Well, if you can't get in normally and you can't get in with safe mode, then your options are limited.

You can try reinstalling windows xp, if you have the installation cd. You won't lose your file, it'll simply repair it, depending on what type of windows cd you have.

Thank you for your time reading this thread. My daughter's Acer Aspire 5050 laptop with Windows Vista started with the blue screen at start up with a c00021a, fatal system error code, so following manufacturer's instructions (laptop is 18 months old and out of warranty), I pressed ALT + F10 keys to start the e-recovery mode (I don't have recovery cd's). When I do that, the functions stalls almost immediately and says cannot load setupdd.sys file error code 4741. I read online that this could be fixed by unplugging and re-plugging the 2 RAM modules, but this didn't work. Any other suggestions? Does this mean the hard drive is damaged? ARGH!
My wife and I both own ACER Aspire 5741G laptops. Recently my wifes laptop has failed startup going straight to the 'start in repair mode' / 'Start Windows normally' option saying 'Windows failed to start'. (The most that happens is the fan starts up and the 4 coloured dots form into the windows logo then it freezes). I have followed the 'prompts' and found that neither the Auto fix OR Restore point fix will work.
After some time I receive a message stating that Windows cannot repair this computer automatically! A second window then opens up labeled 'Startup repair' and offers to sent the information to Microsoft!?! the error report reads as follows:

I have a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV model ST380021A. Don't know if it's SATA or not. I have a SOYO SY-P4VTP M/B. After I do a clean/new install on a formatted drive, (I even installed the SATA drivers that came w/ the mobo just in case) the computer freezes on reboot after the initial installation where it says "Setup will continue after reboot" or something like that. @ the bootscreen with the logo, the bluish bar scrolls a couple of times and freezes. Does anyone know why? I tried installing at a friends house and it worked fine so I know it's not a harddrive error but I place it in mines and it doesn't work so I create a new install and same problem.. I know it's not a temp issue since it's running < 100 F. THis is a genuine copy of XP. Just in case I used my friends. Same prob. -Thanks.

A:Computer freezes at logo screen after clean installation of XP

Well your motherboard has SATA on it, If you were installing on another machine you should be able to tell if it's SATA (small cable m/b connector) or IDE (large ribbon m/b connector).

If it is SATA, try using the other port on the motherboard.
It could also be your ribbon cable if you're using IDE.

If you could just let us know what connector it has so we can isolate the problem better.

Hi. I was previously using windows 7 home premium 64 bit on my computer. The computer worked for around 2 years and one day suddenly went BSOD on me, with various problems from disk read errors to "video driver failed to initalize". After my roommate tried all the system recovery options (which all failed), he decided to use his recovery disk to do a factory reset of the computer (it's his computer). This got rid of most of the problems, with the exception of disk read errors from time to time. However, during the setup of the computer, we got the "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unpexted error. Windows installation cannot proceed." error, which just leaves us in an infinite loop (unless we get a disk read error). Windows 7 came pre-installed with the computer, so we dont have any installation discs. The only disc we have is a recovery disk that lets us get to the system recovery options. The computer was a plug-in-and-use computer meaning that we dont know much about the system specs other than the sticker that came on the side . I included it in case anyone is intrested in it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are deleting all partitions during the booted install to get it cleanest, and following the other steps for a Clean Reinstall Windows 7? Those steps assure you'll get and keep a perfect install.

If after doing those proper preparations it still hangs Starting Services, then first try entering Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation to disable any erroring drivers shown there, and if that doesn't help try new installation media as discussed in Step 1 of tutorial

A:Windows (7) could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.??

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windows could not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vista to repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

Thanks

A:Freezes on Windows XP logo

Not a lot to go on. Safe mode would be the first thing I try. Of course there is always the old "have you made any changes recently," to which usually the answer is no.

Good luck.

This is really messing with my head.
When I boot up my PC, it will load till the windows logo and the blue bar runs across but then my PC will freeze.

Any ideas?

A:windows logo freezes

Hi Dirty_Al

It could be a driver or service loading - try entering into Safe Mode (F8 after POST) and if that's seemless, then it must be a driver/service.

It could also be a RAM corruption. If Safe Mode entry faces the same problem as Normal Mode entry, then download, unzip, burn ISO image file onto a CD, reboot from the CD containing Memtest86+: http://www.memtest.org

Run at least till Test#5 is complete; usually the stringiest check.

Hello all;

I have been reading some posts here with similar issues, mine however, has got me stumped.
You can view my system specs in my profile.
I have a very clean running machine and never had any issues with viruses, malware, spyware, etc:
My event viewer shows no warnings/errors
I do not receive any error codes/messages
I have done a "chkdsk /r", "chkdsk /f" and "chkdsk /p" all results were clean
I have also done "fixboot" "fixmbr" didn't resolve the issue
My system will, after being off for 5 hours or more, freeze at the Windows Logo (the bar) and I have to do a hard restart and choose "last known configuration that worked" which 8 of 10 times will work, the 2 times it doesn't I choose "start windows normally" and all is fine and at that point I can restart anytime without problems, it's the sitting off for 5 hours or so that's got me stumped.
I am just wondering if it might be my video card, I have heard that video cards do sometimes cause boot hangs, random reboots and restart loops.
It's a Diamond Stealth S120 ATI Radeon 9550 256mb
I know I cannot use the most current driver for it as an ati2mag error shows up in my event viewer.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Thanks to all in advance

I dont know alot about computers so please bare with me. I deleted alot of old programs (such as games etc) which I do not use anymore, *through the control panel add/remove programs*, then did a virus scan, and deleted what was found, and decided to go to www.microsoft.com and get the sp3.. after I installed, when I restarted my computer later, it gave me a black screen saying that it was shut down unexpectedly, and offers safe modes, last good config, and start normally, I have tried all three options, with safe mode, it freezes the computer, with the other two, it boots to the windows logo screen, then it will restart the entire system. Is there any way to fix this? I did not get windows disks or anything like that when I bought the computer, I did create recovery disks, but have since lost one of them, so they aren't much help.

Thanks

lickitysplit87,

It's going to be difficlt without the XP CD, as that has the Recovery Console that we need in order to get your computer past the logo screen and into the OS.

Have a read here. If you feel confident that you can get the ISO burnt to disk, come back and we'll continue.

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742, IntelCore i3-380M
I am attaching a few pictures of what comes on the screen when I turn it on.
Even in safe mode it does not let me log in, it attempts repairs, it fails and then goes to the black screen with the white cursor.
If I try to start windows normally it loads the logo and then goes to the black screen.
Yesterday, in an attempt to do repairs it was replacing invalid security drivers or something like that and it was taking ages so I had to turn it off.
For the last week it took very long to start up, failing to configure windows but it would eventually let me log in.
Since yesterday I am only getting the black screen. it is windows 7 by the way.

i need a very quick reply please

Quick reply!!! Save your data and restore back to factory. Always have a back up image of your OS on a external drive for next time you have this problem!!

Hello. It's the second time when I come here.
First I had this problem - https://forums.techguy.org/threads/my-laptop-wont-boot-from-usb.1173499/
and now it got worse.
I don't know what happened to my Acer Aspire ES 14 (ES1-431-C8JZ). (I haven't dropped it or something like that)
When I turn it on, it stucks on Acer logo screen, and then I can't do anything.
I tried to restart it, same problem.
I tried to enter BIOS, Boot Manager, nothing works.
Then I disassembled it, reset bios, and again, nothing worked.
I made a bootable USB - Slax, I tought Linux could fix this, but it doesn't work. It doesn't boot. I tried to remove the hard drive so I can boot with Slax like this (I've heard about this feature of slax - to boot even without hard drive) but it won't pass the Acer logo.
It would be great if someone can tell me where is the problem or how to fix it. Thank you.

A:Laptop Acer won't load past Acer logo screen

Did you ever solve your previous thread?

It's possible that your hard drive is faulty, and it can't boot into Windows because of that.
I don't have any experience with Linux, so I can't confirm if Slax allows you to boot without a hard drive installed.

Do you have any spare hard drives lying around? If not, consider purchasing a low capacity one, installing Windows on it, and trying to boot then. If it still won't boot, then you didn't spend much money on the hard drive, and it'll narrow down your issue a little more.

Worst case scenario is there's something wrong with your motherboard (as per your other thread involving your USB ports).

I have just gone through a divorce. My ex wife had my computer for almost a year but finally sent it back. When I turned it on I found she had wiped the hard drive (I think because she thought I had porn on it which wasn't the case) Anyway, I got a Ubuntu disc and installed that on it but forgot my password, so I shelled out $20 and got a recovery disc from emachines. I installed it but when it gets to the black Windows XP screen the blue bar goes back and forth three or four times and then freezes. I have gone a Google search and tried putting it into safe mode which does the same thing. When I try to go back to the last configuration that works it says something along the lines of "Cannot find windows\window32\config" (Well thats not exactly it but I forget the exact words). Other advice I have read I would try except I have the recovery disc and not the actual Windows Xp disc.

I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to try and get it to work before I give up. The only thing I can think of is to try to get an actual Windows XP Home disc but that will be a headache or take it to Geek Squad and see if it might be an issue with the hard drive. If this exact situation has been addressed before then please direct me to that. Here are the specs on the computer

emachines w2925
2.66 ghz
Intel Celeron processor D
256 RAM
120 gb hd

hi,
i am having a peculiar problem with my newly purchased Acer TimelineU M5-581T laptop. it has 20GB SSD and 500GB HDD and UEFI MB also supports legacy BIOS. it came with Windows-8 pre-installed and had a single drive C:. i needed to partition it and had created drive D: with windows disk management tool by shrinking drive C: and then creating drive D: with available space. problem started to happen after that when i restarted laptop, it was failing to boot on Windows-8 and was going to repair option - eventually that was too failing, but i think i didn't try all the options under repair. i also don't have Acer recovery or restore disks with me, last i got that i should have created the disks before.

since repair didn't work, i tried to fresh install windows-7 from bootable USB containing windows-7 x64 installation.

FYI, the USB bootable flash media was created using Rufus with UEFI mode option selected

Hello,

I am working on an Acer laptop that boots normally except for the screen going blank after the windows loading logo in Windows 7. It does the same when booting to a Windows install disc. It gets past the initial screen when copying files and then goes blank. When connected to a second monitor, the monitor shows "video out of range". I tried booting to safe mode and vga mode with no luck on both monitors. The system loads into windows desktop as I can hear the sounds and I can power down using the start menu blindly. The display works fine in the system BIOS and during the initial boot from disc or hard drive. I am thinking the internal video card is bad but want to explore other options before giving up.

So far I have:
Tested all hardware
Cloned a drive from another machine with a good OS
Tried both the original Windows Vista OS and a new copy of Windows 7 from both CD and hard drive
Booted to VGA mode and safe mode
Reset BIOS to defaults

Please help me get this stubborn laptop to boot normally!

Basically my brother was using my computer for the day while i was out, when i got home i kicked him off and jumped on facebook, then my computer started doing some strange ****. I decided to check my history and see what my brother had been up to but oh how convenient, the history had been cleared AGAIN - AKA porn on my ******* computer. So anyway i'm on facebook, then after clicking someones profile it redirected me to some ridiculous search site claiming the page was invalid (the site was like 123search.com or some **** like that, very clearly the work of a virus of some sort, especially when coming from an obviously working facebook page which i verified on my parents computer). So i tried googling the error (google has the answers to the universe :D) and even google was redirecting me to this gay search site, so i was now sure it was a virus.

So from there i decided to do an Anti-Malware Bytes scan, it claimed to have only found 4 viruses and it said they were removed, but to complete the removal process my computer had to be restarted. So, after the restart this is when my problem started. It took over 15 minutes to shut down 'safely' from this virus scan, and as it was booting back up i made it past the motherboard screen, onto where it usually loads the windows boot logo but nothing showed up. My monitor stays on green light so there is signal coming from the PC so its definitely just a blank boot screen, not the monitor cutting out. I left it on that screen for a ... Read more

A:Windows XP freezes on start up BEFORE boot logo.

Hello there, sorry to hear about your problems.

It may have been a virus but sounded a bit more like a BHO (a not so helpful Browser-Helper-Object) that was messing with your browser. Although that in itself could have been a virus...

If it was a serious enough virus or malware, restarting the computer just allowed it to dig in deeper.

Format is always an option, without losing data, if you have another drive spare anyway.

I recommend you read the following post NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help and then post a topic in this section. Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help - Tech Support Forum.

Out of curiosity, when you restarted your computer, how long did you wait? If it took that long to shut down, it may take longer to start-up/load. Plus, was the hard drive light blinking or even just on solid?

The repair CD you mentioned might actually fix the problem, allowing you to successfully boot and run another scan.

You could also, using the repair CD, open the command prompt/recovery console from the CD and type "bootcfg /rebuild".

Okay, so the power went out, and my PC shut off. Same thing happens when I try and start up with Last Known Start Up that Worked. I have recently noticed that Windows 7 will freeze during startup, specifically while the Windows Logo is midway from forming. After this occurs, I will usually just have to turn my computer off and then on again. When I do this, Windows will boot up normally with no errors. If I wait, the computer will automatically continue booting up after roughly 20 seconds have passed.

Originally, I suspected this may have been a driver issue with Wacom as I received an error from one of the drivers however after removing them completely the problem persisted. I also attempted to restore Windows to a time when it was function properly using Restore Points with no effect.

I have recently flashed (updated) my BIOS and installed a 2nd Nvidia GTX 680 in SLI mode. I have also recently updated my Nvidia Drivers.

What could be causing this problem?

Edit: here is where it freezes. Sorry about the quality!

A:Windows 7 freezes at Windows Logo on Startup and then boots up complet

Does anybody have an idea? The problem goes away if I remove all of my peripheral devices and only two or more devices causes the problem. I tried disabling Legacy USB Support in the BIOS and that also seems to solve the problem. However, this causes my screen to go black with a blinking white cursor for several minutes.

What is wrong?!?! Yesterday this was all working fine!
