Outlook: Receiving duplicate copies of email

Q: Outlook: Receiving duplicate copies of email

I am using Outlook 2000. All of a sudden, I am receiving duplicate copies of all of my email messages. How do I stop this?

Preferred Solution: Outlook: Receiving duplicate copies of email

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to help a client set up his email to run through Gmail's spam filtering. What I have done is to forward his domain mail to a Gmail address. Then I have set up Outlook 2007 to receive mail using the Gmail address but to send mail using the domain address. He has his spam filters working adequately for him when he is the office using Outlook. However, when he is on the road and uses webmail, he has to hand sort through his email to remove spam. This is the reason for running the mail through Gmail. I have set up two send/receive groups in Outlook with the domain mail address set to send only, not receive, and the Gmail address to receive only, not send. However, when I turn off the All Accounts group, receiving mail fails. If I leave it on, he receives two copies of incoming mail, one from his domain mail and one from Gmail. How can I fix it so he only receives the Gmail and not the domain mail?

He is using a Dell Vostro 1700 running Windows XP SP3. In Outlook 2007 we have two email accounts:
1. [email protected] POP/SMTP
2. [email protected] IMAP/SMTP

In Trust Center I have turned off OutlookAddin.

I use Outlook 2002 and our email server is through Dreamhost. Lately, one of my coworkers has been opening his Outlook to find upwards towards 100 copies of each email he's receiving. I have:

- contacted Dreamhost and they told me there is no problem on their side.
- deleted his email account after exporting all of his email information to a new .pst folder, restarted his computer and then created a new account in Outlook (didn't work)
- deleted his email account off of Dreamhost and recreated it (still did not work)

I don't know a whole lot about email servers and was hoping someone has some idea of what to do to alleviate this issue? I can't find anything when I google that I haven't done already.

A:Receiving multiple copies of email messages

Hi erinlmichael

See if anything in these articles helps:

You are prompted for your password, and you may receive duplicate e-mail messages if your profile has two POP3 accounts in Outlook

Duplicate e-mail messages are downloaded from a POP3 e-mail server account in Outlook 2003

Also try disabling email scanning if it is currently enabled, to see if that makes a difference.

I have my email on my Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 so it can be shared by my laptop and two desktops. That part works fine. I've got Outlook 2003 on two of the machines and Outlook 2007 on my new laptop.

My email provider is Comcast.net

The new laptop has Windows 7 Pro and the other machines have Win XP Pro.

I'm getting two copies of most emails. even if I send myself an email from my local account or if I use my gmail account to send myself a test email, I get one copy immediately and then a few minutes later, a second copy. This has been going on for months. It is, as they used to say in the sixties, a 'stone drag.'

Any suggestions?

For the past few weeks I have been receiving duplicate e-mails in Outlook -- every e-mail I get comes twice, at the same time. It's not a huge problem to delete one, but would like to find a fix.

I have XP Home, purchased in 2002, have not had this problem before. Have tried turning off the e-mail scanner in Norton anti-virus, but that did not solve the problem.

Title says it all. Duplicate emails from some - not all - senders.
How canii fix this annoying problem?

A:Receiving duplicate emails in Outlook Express 6

If it's only happening with some, not all, messages, it points to a problem with the senders email provider, not yours. If it was a problem with either your email client software or your email provider, every message would be duplicated.

I have one particular contact who emails me and it always arrives twice in my mailbox. I've ascertained that the same thing happens with other people that he sends messages to, so it's evidently a problem at his end.

I don't use Outlook at all, but I think it has pretty much all the features of Thunderbird.. If so, then you may be using one of the following account settings:

a. auto add cc your email address;

b. auto add Bcc your email address;

c. when sending place a copy in your inbox.

I am trying to find a way to use outlook to check my hotmail account. I have Outlook 2000. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:Receiving hotmail email in outlook

As far as I am aware, you cannot easily use Oulook 2000 for hotmail.

Outlook 2002 perhaps, or Outlook Express will apparently work, but not Outlook 2000.

There is a workaround, which seems to have disappeared from the MS site, however a cached copy is attached below:

Outlook does not support the integration of Hotmail e-mail accounts.

You can view your Hotmail e-mail in Outlook by creating a Hotmail folder and then associating a Web view of that folder that points to the Hotmail Web site.

NOTE: The technique outlined in the steps below can be used to view messages from any Web-based e-mail provider, including Yahoo, Lycos, Excite and others.

Creating a Hotmail Folder

On the View menu, click Folder List to turn on the Folder List.
Right-click Outlook Today, and then click New Folder. Name the folder Hotmail and then click OK. Your Folder List should now include a Hotmail mail items folder.

Associating the Hotmail Folder with the Hotmail Web Site
In the Folder List, right-click the Hotmail folder, and then click Properties.

On the Home Page tab, type http://www.hotmail.com in the Address box.

Click to select Show home page by default for this folder, and then click OK.
Now when you click the Hotmail folder in your folder list, you will see the option to log on to your account. You can add a Hotmail folder shortcut to your Outlook Bar by dragging the Hotmail folder to the Outlook Bar.

Good Afternoon,

I work in a very small office of 5 employees. We have 5 pc's all running xp sp3, all connected to a separate server which forwards our email, gets data backed up to it, etc.

Around 3 weeks ago one of the machines stopped receiving email through outlook 2003 (exchange server). Email sent from it gets received, and it does seem to receive email sent from other people in our office, but nothing from outside has come in for quite a while.

Having read up on a few things on this board & else where i have so far established:

Removing the account in outlook and putting it back on again makes no difference.

Removing the anti virus/firewall software did nothing. Reinstalling a different antivirus etc (avg) and running a full virus scan pulled no results.

Checking and comparing as many of the properties on the server as I can find, there is nothing different that i can see between one of the working accounts and the non working one.

There does not appear to be any mail queued on the server that is not pushing through on the account.

Having had very little experience in this kind of thing, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I paged through the archives and couldn't find this - please forgive if this has been answered dozens of times.

My Outlook Express 6 is driving my colleagues crazy. It sends and resends the same message multiple times, all the while informing me that it can't send the specified message, which remains in the Outbox. Each time I open the program, it tries and "fails" to send yet again - yet in fact sends it. It informs me there was an error, but doesn't specify an error # (the error message window is blank).

I got so frustrated that I started using Netscape's email software. But now Netscape has acquired its own bugginess and is refusing to download my mails. Grrr.

Desperate, I actually did pay for and use RegCure - but nothing has improved, except RegCure's financial situation.

If anyone can help with this, I'll be grateful. I'd like to get back to doing some actual work.

Hi nan.wellins

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Several things could be the cause:
What anti-virus program are you using?
Is e-mail scanning enabled?
Do you have an anti-spam program?

Is there an attachment included with the message?
Does this occur with all messages?
How do you connect to the Internet?
Dial-up, DSL, broadband?

Hi everyone,

I have two user in the office that have been having trouble sending or receiving their email using Outlook 2k. This just recently started happening.
When they open their outlook and press send/receive, they get a message that says:

Some messages couldn't be retreived from the server. This usually happens when the connection to the server is lost due to server or network problems. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

At other times, when they press the send/receive button, the button stays down like if it were stuck.

At first I thought maybe it was just office, so I reinstalled office but that didn't work.

Does anyone know what may be the problem? Could it be the network? I've noticed this morning that our network as been slowing down tremendously.

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it you all let me know? Thank you.

A:Trouble sending/receiving email in Outlook 2k.

I assume you're not using an Exchange Server as it would then not be necessary to hit send/receive.

I have a major problem with my email account in Outlook Express. For some reason I can receive, but I can't send. I've been in touch with my hosting company and they can send AND receive on their own computers, but I can't. Why not?!?

I shut down my Sygate Pro firewall, then disabled my Norton's for the purposes of testing and still I can't send. I keep getting this message ...

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Honey's Home', Server: 'mail.honeyshome.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I have cPanelX running on my website, so I went in and created a new account and I can't send with that account either. It has to be something to do with my computer settings, but I'll be darned if I can figure it out, sigh!!

Can someone please help me with this? It's driving me nuts!!! Thanks!

Hi rpi

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Have you tried the Detect and Repair option in the Help menu?

Have you tried creating a new Profile?
With Outlook closed:
Control Panel > Main Icon > Show Profiles > Add

Set up a new Personal Folder (.pst) with your email account and restart Outlook with the new Profile to see if you can duplicate the problem.

If the problem goes away, open the original .pst file into the new Profile.
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Browse to the .pst file, usually in the C:\Windows directory.

See if the problem returns, if it does, copy all the folders from the original Personal Folders (.pst) into the new Personal Folders (.pst), then Right click on the original Personal Folders and select Close to remove it from the new Profile.

Hi there,

Could anyone please help me with this email problem that is driving me mad?

I have exactly the same problem as this guy http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/571588-solved-outlook-express-not-receiving.html
which was solved... I've followed the advice that worked for him but I cannot set up a new identity, there is no option to add a new identity.

My email was running fine up until Fri night/Sat morning but since then I am not receiving any emails, although emails are sending fine.

I did get two emails sent through yesterday (But delayed by hours) and just as I type this I have received another email which I should have got this morning.
I have sent emails to myself from my account and other email addresses but none have been received.
I am with Pipex and when I log onto their webmail there are no emails in there either (Usually I can check emails in here when I am away from my PC)

I've uninstalled my anti virus and checked all settings, they are all correct as far as I can see (They must be or I wouldn't have got the 3 emails I have got).

It's possible it could be an server problem with Pipex but for over 30 hours???? I'm not so sure, especially as I've never had problems before.

Incidently, both my email accounts are finding the host and connecting properly with NO errors.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Good day. I have Outlook Express version 6.0, running on Win98. I use my Comcast email account. I have recently been accessing my email via the web, and not downloading the email to my OE, as I wanted to be able to access it whereever I am. However, I have too many messages, and it is takes too much time to clean up the mail on the web. Thus, I wanted to download the messages to my PC through the Outlook Express.

However, the mail is being received extremely slowly, taking 10-20 seconds per email. This compares to a time of maybe a second several months ago.

Has anyone experienced this problem, and know a solution, or at least what the problem might be caused by?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I had a freeze up on my Outlook 2000. After using the Inbox Repair Tool, I was able to save everything. I then archived and compacted the .pst file to reduce it by about 25%.

I then tried to get my mail and it started the process, showing how many were on the server and the countdown. Also, the animated mail icon in the bottom tray showed mail coming in.

However, when it finished, it gave a error message that said the mail couldn't be retrieved from the server. It was a download error.

Thinking Norton System Works might have something to do with it, I uninstalled it. Didn't help. I uninstalled Outlook and did a registry clean and reinstalled. Didn't help.

Here is the REALLY INTERESTING part. I installed Outlook Express, and it downloaed the mail. I then went to my wife's user and configured Outlook 2000 and it downloaded mail. I went bact to my user and it still didn't work.

A:Outlook 2000 doesn't complete receiving email

The Latest:

I made a new pst folder with a new name. Now the new one allows me to check the box for the mail to be received; BUT WAIT, after closing and opening Outlook, it then switched to the other. So I check the other one (because now it doesn't allow it in the new one) and close/open and it switches again which one it will allow to be checked. THis is really crazy, but probably has a relatively easy fix if I just knew what it was. IDEAS?

Hi all,

A curiousity in that I am not sure if anything negative is happening to the system as a result of this but, as they say, if in doubt.

The Send/Receive message is appearing bottom right of Outlook 2003, it says it is receiving an email, or few, but then in the first case nothing appears in the Inbox, or in the second, one less email will appear in the Inbox if others are being downloaded as well.

I use Mailwasher and these phantom emails do not appear there either. The only indication being this email count not tallying with what appears in the Inbox.

Has anyone else seen this? Any problems as a result?

I get an email to my company email from an external source (not company email) that is CC to another company email address, and I will get a duplicate email in my inbox. If it is CC to 2 people I will get 2 duplicates (3 messages in total) This leads me to believe that outlook is not configured to pull the right emails from the server right? For some reason, I am experiencing a very long delay receiving gmail in Outlook Express. I double-checked all of the settings, and pop access is enabled in gmail.

After trying for a while, and I went in and changed the setting to receive "all email" (vs. email from this point on), and of course I got all of the email that I had not received yet. However, when I tried sending and an email to myself, and then tried retrieving it via Outlook Express, no luck, even though it had already arrived in my gmail account.

Any ideas?

A:Experiencing long delay receiving gmail email via Outlook Express

Have You tried using IMAP in stead of POP. I was getting my Gmail on my Palm phone and I believe I have had better luck using IMAP. But Google has a email client for mobile phones so I just use that now. It also works pretty well using Blazer or Safari web browsers to read my google email. Of course I am not a big fan of Outlook Express.

What is wrong with just using the Web Interface? I haven't ever used any client since Eudora. As soon as I was able to store and view my email anywhere in the world I stopped using Fat Clients on my pc to view my mail. Web has been the way for me for a while. I don't even install any IM clients on my PC anymore.

Using Outlook 2016, Windows 10. In the last few days, I've started getting multiple copies of the same email. Not all emails, but most. Some, just two or three. Others, up to a dozen of the same email. I've got four accounts at two different servers (RoadRunner and GoDaddy) ... and it's happening to all four, which is why I think it's an Outlook problem.

Additional clue: Some of the emails I'm getting multiple copies of are from last month ... stuff that had been deleted many days ago.

First instinct is to look at my settings (both POP accounts), to see if things are set up correctly. But that makes no sense ? up until two or three days ago, everything was working exactly the way it should. I haven't made any system changes, haven't installed new software ... can't think of anything that would've made this just start happening.

Any way to make this stop that doesn't require a hammer?

Thanks, anybody.......

Windows 8.1, Outlook 2016 and the same thing has started happening to me. I have made no changes to any settings, but suddenly I'm getting multiple copies of emails.

It looks like it started on Monday.........could it be related to the leap year?

Through the process of registering for this forum and typing this post, I have hit "send/receive" 3 times, and now I have 3 copies of one email. At this point it seems quote random - 3 copies of one email, but only 1 copy of another etc.
Edit: A bit more searching and it seems to be a "known bug" introduced in the last 2016 release in February. Apparently happens if the "leave a copy on the server" setting is enabled. Microsoft advise either removing the setting so all messages are deleted, or using IMAP instead of POP3. Tough luck for those of us stuck with slow and expensive internet connections that make IMAP untenable!!!

Using Windows 7 fax program. We are receiving multiple copies of the same fax (sometimes 10) though the sender says they are only sending one time. Is this a setting issue? Would love to only get one copy delivered.

Morning my time Ken,

How long have you had this problem?

It is possible that the following may apply to you????

Network and server problems

If you are receiving duplicates of your mail, the cause may be technical difficulty along the delivery path. Either a network connection is having problems, or one of the computers along the route is very slow or having other system problems.

Most mail delivery protocols and programs are conservative. If they are unsure whether a mail message was successfully passed along to the next computer on the network, the sender will try to send it again. If the message was passed along successfully the first time, the second attempt will produce a second copy of the same message, and you will likely receive both copies.
On large networks such as the Internet, a mail message must usually pass through several different computers before it reaches its final destination. This problem can potentially occur at any computer along the way.
A synchronization problem in the SMTP mail delivery protocol, which is used by most mail programs on the Internet, can make this error more likely.

Unfortunately, there is no real solution ... Read more

I'm using Windows 7 trying to rid myself of excess pictures in Windows and the machine is not responding to control or control shift and keeps generating additional copies.

A:How do I get rid of many copies and duplicate pictures.

Hi, please be more specific on the issue. Which folder are those pictures located? Can you manually remove them? You can boot into Safe Mode and try to remove them first if you encounter such not reponding issue when trying to remove them.Sean Zhu - MSFT

running Exchange 2000SBS, XP Pro with Outlook 2002 SP3.
We have a number of satellite offices using POP mail (with Outlook Express) to connect to our main office (running Exchange). All Exchange connected PCs have their PST file stored on the server, all PCs running AVG v7.5 Network Edition.
Issue 1:
When emailing to any of the external offices, the offices receive 8-10 copies of the original email.
All our SMTP mail is routed through an external relay server, then forwarded on to the POP mail accounts.
Issue 2
Occasinally I also receive the following error:

A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator.

Would someone be able to help me troubleshoot either one of these problems?

Thanks in advance,

I need to remove my backup copies of my files from my hard drive. I have run out of hard drive space. Is there a program that will clean up my computer so I can download more software?

A:Duplicate copies of old Windows back-ups

It's a possibility that something like this could give you some room: This not Windows' Backups, this is for Windows System Restore Points.
(If you have Windows Vista, let me know, yuo need further info)

•Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr

•Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

•Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.

•Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"

•Click Yes, then click Ok.

•Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"

•Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

Next: http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe << By default, it cleans all user's temp files and such
Then see if you can manually start delting old files......you can do this far better using SHIFT+DEL method which skips putting the deleted objects into the Bin. Turn off the NUM LOCK key, or use the DEL key that is not in the numeric keypad. Right click files you want to Delete and while pressing SHIFT press Delete. Often this will not work for Folders, but if you delete the Files inside a Folder then it should work
