The left click button just stopped working...? Help?

Q: The left click button just stopped working...? Help?

I hope this topic is in the correct forum.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 which was brand new when purchased at the end of December. I was using it fine until yesterday, when I went to click the IE shortcut and noticed it wasn't working. Everything else works (hover, point, scroll) just the left click button has stopped functioning. The mouse is clean.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

I just got a new gaming mouse, an Anker 4000 DPI one from Amazon and i've been having this problem for the week i've had this and it's that the left mouse button doesn't like to work. I've tried doing most things like checking if Click Lock has been turned on, re-installing drivers and doing that power management thing in the USB Root Hub in Device Manager. I've tried the mouse on my dads laptop and no problems at all.

Any idea?
Thanks

The left click button on the touchpad of my Acer Aspire One Netbook recently stopped working properly. It won't let me click ( except sometimes after pressing the button repeatedly), and when it does, it highlights everything on the page and drags the links I try to click. I can't get it out of drag mode, and trying to use the scroll bar is hell because it won't stop scrolling. I think the left click button is stuck.

I've had the computer for three years, and up until a few weeks ago, I'd never had this problem. I don't want to send it back to Acer or buy any new parts. Is there any solution to this problem?

A:Left Click Button Not Working on Acer Aspire One

Boot into Setup (Bios) go to Integrated Peripherals and see if Touch Pad is disabled, if so, using your arrow key Enable it. Save and Exit. (it probably is already enabled)
Go to the Acer Driver page Acer | Download find your model and download the Touch Pad Driver.
Go to the Control Panel/Mouse (or touchpad) and adjust the sensitivity.

My 7 year old son was playing on Roblox (internet) and all of the sudden the mouse stopped working. "He didn't do anything" he says but trying to get the left mouse button to work is impossible. I have gone into the control panel and changed the settings so that the right button acts like the left, but this still isn't good because now I don't have a right button feature anymore. I try to change it back and then the left doesn't work at all.

I did a system restore to this morning and the problem is still there. There are no new add ins in internet explorer from today either.

A:Left Mouse Click on Laptop Touchpad stopped working

I assume you have checked your settings in Control Panel > Mouse Properties?

It will save a lot of time if you can determine whether this is a hardware problem or a software problem.
Try this: Download a copy of UBUNTU. Put this on a USB stick. Boot from the USB stick and choose to Run The Program (you do not need to install it on your hard drive). Then check to see if the mousepad works OK in UBUNTU. If it does then it is a Windows/Software problem. If it doesn't then it is a defective mousepad.

I'm creating this post just fyi should it help anyone else with this problem. Here's what I tried and, at least in my case, how i solved a "mouse left click doesn't work" problem

I have a Logitech wireless laser mouse and use rechargeable AA batteries. The other morning i powered on my computer as usual and tried using my Logitech wireless mouse but left click didn't work (although rt click and mouse movement continued working just fine)

Things i first tried that didn't help:
> Reinstalling Logitech Setpoint and mouse drivers
> Reinstalling Logitech USB transceiver firmware
> Pressing the "reconnect" button on the USB transceiver to reconnect transceiver to wireless mouse
> Changed the mouse batteries a couple times and also tried recently recharged batteries

Then i had a hunch (well, it was really more of a last ditch hopeful guess - but it seems to have worked!)
I removed the batteries and let the mouse sit overnight without any battery inside it. When i put batteries back in the next morning, the mouse has been working fine again ever since. Go figure :stickout:

mgcas,
Below is information to turn off tablet mode that may be preventing you from right clicking.
Turning off the TABLET modeThe failure of the right click function can be directly attributed to TABLET mode being activated on your computer. You cannot do most of the right click operations while in this mode. There are many ways to turn off the tablet mode on your Windows 10 PC.
Turn off Tablet Mode in Action CenterFor this option, press the combination keys WINDOWS + A; or click on the system icon for Action Center which is usually located in the taskbar notification zone. Navigate to the bottom of Action Center and then click or tap on Tablet Mode. It is a two – way toggle between ON and OFF, so do it according to your preference. Once done, test to see if the right-click now works.
Turning off TABLET mode from the Settings AppGo to Settings and click on System. On the left hand side you will see the line Tablet Mode. Click on it, and on the right side identify the phrase “Make Windows more touch – friendly when using your device as a tablet”. Turn it off.
Use system registry editor to turn off Tablet Mode (Advanced Users Only)Go to “Run”. In Run, key in the word regedit.exe or just regedit. The registry editor appears. Navigate to the path

Man this feels weird. I'm usually the one giving help, not asking for it lol.

HP Pavilion dv7
Win7 Professional x64

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

I have a brand-new EliteBook 840 running Windows 10. The left touchpad button sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It's like this: If I click a second time (or a third time) with the left button, without having moved the cursor (not double click, but two separated clicks), then the computer doesn't respond to the click. If I click by tapping on the touchpad area (instead of pressing the button) then everything is fine. But I don't like tapping! If I click with an external mouse connected via USB then everything is fine. If I move the cursor and then click, then it works. The problem is very annoying because each time the computer doesn't respond to the clicks, I have to move the cursor and then click again.

I just received my X1 Carbon and am noticing something unusual about the left thumb mouse button (is that what it's called?)  Anyways I find myself often hitting the far-right edge of the left-button (practically touching the middle thumb button) and I'm finding that it does not register.  Similarly if I hit the far-left edge of that button, it doesn't register either... my thumb needs to depress the center of that button in order for it to work.  This issue doesn't happen with the right-button... I can hit the far-left and far-right edge of that and it will work fine. There is something weird about the left thumb button though... it is definitely higher in height than the right thumb button.  Seems like a fit & finish issue. Does anyone else have this problem?

A:X1 carbon - left thumb click button

I found the following information for the X1 Carbon User Guide, I hope it is helpful! I believe the Left Click button is what you are referring to when you said the Left thumb mouse button, close enough; I knew what you were referring to and that's all that really matters

Page 23 and 24:

Using the TrackPoint pointing device
The TrackPoint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboard. To move the pointer 5 on the screen, you apply pressure to the nonslip cap on the pointing stick in any direction parallel to the keyboard; the pointing stick itself does not move. The speed at which the pointer moves depends on the pressure you apply to the pointing stick. The functions of the left 4 and right 2 click buttons correspond to those of the left and right mouse buttons on a conventional mouse. The TrackPoint center button 3 called the scroll bar, enables you to scroll Web pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the graphic scroll bars on the side of the window.

Try custominzing the settings to see if makes a difference for the for clicking the Left click button.
You can customize the TrackPoint pointing device and its buttons as follows:
? Switch the functions of the left and right buttons.
? Change the sensitivity of the TrackPoint pointing device.
? Enable the Press-to-Select function.
? Enable the TrackPoint Scrolling Tips.

Dell Inspiron 17R 5737: A few months ago the left click button of the touchpad got deflated from bottom left edge and the click got sticky, if I clicked on right top edge, it worked sometimes but mostly left click stayed pressed.
I opened the laptop and found that the small plastic attached to the button, which inflates it back is broken. I tried to fix it using glue but it didn't work. As it was part of the whole Palmrest thus I ordered a new palmrest. After receiving the new palmrest, I detached the buttons circuit and touchpad circuit from the old palmrest and attached it to the new palmrest.
Strangely now, the left click button is partially sticky, if I click on the left half of the button it sticks, if I click on the right half of the button it works properly 90% of the time. The button is no more deflated and it inflates and deflates properly on clicking, there is nothing broken in the new palmrest, the clicking sound is fine, there is just 1 button for left click then how it is working differently for left half and right half, that I am not able to understand.
Next step can be to order new buttons circuit but I am not sure if this will fix the problem.
This is my work laptop thus it is effecting my work and time quite badly, any help will be highly appreciated.

Win10 V.1511 and V.1607.
Example TaskBar Button - File Explorer

If you open an instance of File Explorer, then click the task bar button again, File explorer window minimizes. If you right click, a popup opens with Pinned, Frequent, and File Explorer. If you click on File Explorer, another instance of Explorer will open.

If you open an instance of File Explorer and then, hold down the "Shift" key and left click the File Explorer TaskBar button again, another instance of file explorer will open.

This works with most any application that can run in multiple instances. At some time in the past (i.e. probably Win7 era) I found a way to make individual Task bar buttons work as if the shift key was pressed (i.e. each Left Click would always open another instance of the app). After upgrading to Win10 and subsequently after loading the anniversary updates, I managed to lose that function. Since I've slept once or twice since setting this up, I no longer remember how I did it.

So to my question, Does anyone know of a setting or registry hack that will make a taskbar button function as if the shift key is pressed when it is left clicked?

My little brother was using the computer last night and said that everything froze up for a bit and he could not click on anything. When I rebooted, it said "Active Desktop Recovery" on the screen as part of the wall paper saying it was disabled. It had instructions to turn it back on and there was a button to click for me to restore it. But, I could not click on it. The right-click works just fine. I figured out how to switch primary control to the right button on the mouse, so I could get around while fixing it. Unfortunately, now that I can use right click, the restore active desktop button is gone. It disappeared after a reboot. I have run McAfee, Panda Active Scan, Spybot, Ad-Aware and Registry Mechanic. There were a few infected files and spyware and I removed them. The problem still exists. I have uninstalled the mouse driver and let the computer auto-install the driver on reboot. If anyone has any idea how to fix this, then please help me.

Hi everyone, Avid user of the Thinkpad Carbon line here and really hoping this issue can be resolved - I've recently been having trouble using the left mouse click button on the 5th gen x1 carbon. Sometimes when I press to click on it, it doesn't register the click as well as it used to. Even when slighly pushing up against with my index finger, the button begins to make janky noises as if there was something wrong with it. The right mouse click button has had no issue so far which makes sense since I've primarily used the left click button during most of my work sessions. Just trying to understand whether there's a hardware fix for this available using Lenovo or third party services? Would really like to know since I enjoy using this machine for both work and leisure.

I want to say it is a hardware issue but the thing about part of the menus disappearing makes me wonder if it is a virus. I would try a Windows preboot environment CD like Hiren's and see if the mouse works with different software. But that is a longshot and the likely answer is that the mouse circuit board is bad. The only other thing you could try is a factory restore.

Got a T440s Touch. Trackpad looks fine but the left side is slightly tilted compared to the right. Clicking the buttons at the bottom work and the right TrackPoint button at the top of the tochpad works, as does the centre scroll button, but the left one doesn't. The left button doesn't seem to click - can this be fixed easily? Have tried playing around with drivers, blowing compressed air into the trackpad, updating BIOS, enabling/disabling TrackPoint in the BIOS but all to no avail. Any ideas? If the worst comes to the worst I have an L540 - can I swap the trackpads over?

Hey guys - this is a weird one. Left click the mouse to open something and nothing happens. Well, nothing happens that's supposed to, is safe to say!For example - in OUTLOOK - you move the mouse onto "addresses," it "lights up," i.e. highlights... then you click the mouse (left), the highlight comes off, un-highlights itself. Another example, in IExplorer -- click on the DOWN arrow in the address line -- this should expose/make visible the most recently visited sites in a drop down box.... but, you click on the arrow - sites appear in the dropped window for LESS THAN A SECOND, then go away!!! Another example, I hit "FILE" then "SAVE AS" to save a document on my desktop, left click the down arrow at the "SAVE IN" area, it QUICKLY opens all of the available areas to save the file in I would normally see, but they disappear as fast as they appear! With IE minimized, left click on it, it doesn't open. Basically... left click of the mouse isn't performing as advertised. Heck --- even to EDIT this post... I had to RIGHT CLICK on the edit button!!!It seems the only way to open something is to RIGHT click, then select OPEN... Ran EWIDO - cleaned/deleted the infected 86 filesRan AVG - ditto what happened on Ewido. 86 infections, cleaned and deleted... Here's the latest HJT log... A:Left Button On Mouse Not Working As Advertised...

Hi,This isn't a malware related issue here though... It rather looks like the left-button just hangs when you click it - too sensitive, maybe dirt under it - whatever. Can you try another mouse and look if you are having the same issue. There's nothing suspicious in your Hijackthislog. One note though..Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.Updating Java:Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".Click the "Download" button to the right.Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".The page will refresh.Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I turned on my 6 months old Acer Aspire One as usual and realised that something was wrong with my mouse. The left button simply doesn't work. Neither does tapping the touchpad. Nothing happens no matter how many times I push or tap. I can move the cursor around just fine and the right mousebutton still works. I can also plug in a USB mouse and use that instead.
I have checked the mouse properties. Under the tab "Hardware" the mouse is listed "Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad", and the unit status says it works correctly. I also checked the preferences, and both tapping and buttons are activated and set to normal.
I have tried restarting, removing the battery and Fn-F7 without any luck.
I have also tried switching preferences to left-handed - that gave a funny result: Both the right button and tapping the touchpad functioned like a right-click except now they could also for instance close a window and open the start-menu. The left-button still didn't have any function what so ever.
Hope someone can help me.

Hi, I have y700 which comes with win 10 home and works perfectly since I got it from the store. However, just this morning the right and left click functions are not working for whatever the reason is. My suspicion is that the latest windows update seems to be the root of the problem yet I am  unsure about this. has anyone encountered the same problem with me? or anyone knows how to fix this ? Thank you beforehand

I have an ideapad 110. After working fine all day without incident I can't left click. When I went to double tap it wouldn't work. I can right click and move the mouse.  I literally step away come back type in my password. POOF! Doesn't work.  I am literally stumped and have now become extremely frustrated.

After using attempting to livestream using OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) I tried ending the stream by clicking "stop streaming" but I noticed it wasn't working, I thought maybe my computer was just playing up (I hoped not it's 2 days old) so I just pressed Alt-F4 to close OBS.

After not getting a response from any left clicks I shut down my computer, thinking OBS was still running in the background and it was somehow interfering. When I logged back in to my PC I then realised that infact I was just not able to left click. After trying to uninstall some programs to see if this would fix the issue I got out my spare mouse, and that one worked perfectly. I tried sfc / scannow, uninstalled all my recently installed programs, un-installed my anti-virus and Razer Synapse 2.0. I read somewhere that conflicting software may be causing a problem so in the end I decided to restore Windows, and still my left click would not work. However when I re-bound left click to my 1 button on the mouse, it worked fine.

After all that I finally considered that my mouse might actually be broken. So I plugged it into a laptop to see if the left click was working and it wasn't. The timing seemed all too perfect for the reason to simply be that my mouse button is no longer working, and I read through multiple troubleshooting articles and forum posts from people with similar problems but none of the solutions provided worked.

The left click and right click buttons on the laptop are not responding. The actual mouse pad is working and I'm able to move the pointer/cursor.

It is a Thinkpad t420s, running on Windows 10. This started happening after a windows update was performed.

I had planned to downgrade to windows 8.1 anyway so I went ahead and did that, thinking all issues would be resolved. They were not. The drivers are installed and says that they are working properly... but the problem still persists. Keep in mind that I do connect an external mouse and it works fine.

Please advise.
