Failure To Proceed With Windows Update

Q: Failure To Proceed With Windows Update

Alright already--after trying 4 times with no success to do a Windows Update and also trying the suggestions Microsoft has mapped out, I am at a loss as to how to proceed. When connected to the MS update site, it scans my computer for updates and then attempts to install the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool. Midway through the installation, it suddenly halts and says it was not installed.

I tried MS's suggestions which are mainly creating prompts for ActiveX controls. But to no avail. It does not help.

I assume that if I can't get this corrected, I will never be able to receive Windows updates again?

I have a genuine copy of Windows XP Home. It was installed on my computer when I bought it last year from a local retailer. I have easily done previous updates on this computer with absolutely no problem.

Help! Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: Failure To Proceed With Windows Update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We use Desktop Central to manage our windows updates. I've come across a new error that I have not seen all year. They are telling me it's a Microsoft error and they have no information on it.
I have a couple of Windows 7 machines that have the following error on multiple updates.
An attempt was made to create more links on a file than the file system supports.

Of the machines having this issue, they're not all the same KB. Using one of the machines as example, it's having this issue with 3 updates.
2019-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4519976)

2019-09 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4516033)

2019-08 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4512486)

Seems like the standard Windows Updates fix's aren't working. Software distribution folder rename, fixit tools, etc. I'm not see this on any of our Windows 10 machines.
Any idea how to go about resolving this? Reimaging is way at the bottom of the list due to these machines being at remote sites.

Hi every bodyI downloaded Windows 7 32bit (no key yet), I've tried upgrading Windows Vista SP1 but when step 2 (expandeing files) reaches 21% the installation stops with following error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."I tried to install Windows 7 in a new partition but the process reaches 27% this time and stops with same error.I've reformatted my hard disks completely and installation process reaches 99% then stops with same error.I checked BIOS settings and found only DVD and HDD listed (no third option).the Microsoft suggestion about the registry tweaking did not apply for me (and I tried to install a fresh copy from scratch).I'm using 2 HDD in RAID0 configuration and works OK with Windows Vista, I did load the drivers to Windows 7 during installation but still getting same problem, any suggestion???

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windows could not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vista to repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

Hello, I appear to have a corrupt C Drive, the Lenovo test came back with storage device test failure. This makes sense to me, as I have had nothing but problems with this PC from day one, I had to re-install Windows 10 about 5 times...It came with Windows 8 originally. So I guess I need to get a new hard-drive. I remember doing something like this about 15 years ago, where it was just taking something out of a slot and putting something else in instead, but I guess times have changed! What do I need to do, and will this affect being able to install the operating system etc? Many thanks for any help.... I have a H50-50 Desktop

Hey all, My daughter in CA sent me her Dell Inspiron B120 (running XP Home I believe) with the C0000218 (Registry File Failure) message coming up at start-up. I had gone into this forum before and tried the steps outlined in this post: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_repair_a_stop.htm but was unsuccessful. Whether I start it in safe mode, normal mode, with the Win XP Home Reinstallation CD (SP1) in or out, it still goes to the blue error screen. Pressing "R" from the second the computer booted up never brought me to the Recovery Console screen so I was also unable to try that fix. Any help is greatly appreciated. I looked through various posts but none of them seemed to be as bad off as me.Thank you.JackEDIT: I pressed F12 at boot-up and was given an option of running various Diagnostic tests. I ran an extended test which passed in all fields except for 2 Read Tests which had errors that stated: "Uncorrectable Error on media is write protected. followed by 0F00:0244 and 0F00:1A44. It tried to read a bunch of block but failed. Not sure if this helps any.

Hello

First of all, I thank you for your attention.

I cannot perform any "Windows update" issue since the 23/08/2016.

Each time I reach the "Windows Update" screen, I get the following error message :

In french : "Redémarrer l'ordinateur pour installer d'importantes mises à jour"

In english: "Restart the computer to install importante updates"

Then, after rebooting, nothing change.

After further investigations, I get the following error message:

In French : "windows update ne peut pas actuellement rechercher des mises à jour car vous devez tout d'abord redémarrer votre ordinateur afin de terminer l'installation précédente."

In English : "windows update cannot research update because you must first restart your computer in order to finish the previous installation".

Then, I've recreated a new catalog by executing these commands:

net stop wuauserv

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftDist.old

net start wuauserv

Now all services are running but I still cannot perform updates.

A:[SOLVED! Windows Update BUG!] Windows Update Failure [7SP1 x64] KB4074598 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

Solved, 2 months later! After 3 dist upgrades!
So I finally solved this Windows / Update BUG, it and it was as simple as this; set peerdissvc (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\) (aka branchcache as it is known under services.msc) from disabled back to manual, along with its
dependency http, to manual. I'm quite sure setting branchcache to manual was all that was necessary for the fix to take place; I also had set "not configured" to alll changes I had made to "Background Intelligence Transfer Service" under
group policy regarding peer caching. I had tried the latter before the last 3 distupgrades and it did not make any difference; so it seems windows update fails if you disable branchcache, which is typically only used by businesses anyway, so many people recommend
to disable it, for security reasons also. What a headache; I spent at least a 80 hours, and weeks, and months trying to figure this one out; Windows update has turned into a bunch of bull***** with their ROLLUPS; one error on one of 130 little updates and
the whole shebang goes down with the ship; dumbest idea ever for their update platform; they should change to individual updates and do it quick.

This is a MICROSOFT WINDOWS UPDATE BUG. You shouldn't have to enable or disable any built in windows service to get a "windows" update working. What a headache.
SO for all of you 80004005 victims out there; check your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log; searc... Read more

I have been attempting various 'fixes' on a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop since the release of Windows-10 Build-1511.  The original Win-10 installation was fine but the 1511 Update consistently failed at 40% (23% into the Drivers & Features part).  Non of the 'fixes I tried actually worked and the installation continued to collapse at 40%.
Last night I was trying a new (to me) Driver Updating program from Auslogics (Driver Updater) in an attempt to fix an issue on my Advent Desktop - after purchasing the full copy of the driver updater it downloaded drivers which other driver update programs had not found before and it DID fix my issue.  Consequently, I decided to try it on the Dell laptop as I wondered if it was a driver issue that was preventing the update to Build 1511.
The Auslogics Driver Updater found half a dozen drivers that Neither Driver Max nor Driver Booster 3 had found and after installing them I tried the Windows Update again.  This time it ran through to completion without any problems at all.  I am still uncertain as to which of the drivers was the problem but obviously Microsoft needs to take a look at their update code and to download necessary drivers when an issue is identified (or at least give a more meaningful error message than merely "The update has failed".

I hope this helps others with the same or similar problems with the 1511 update.  I would be interested to hear how you go on.
Steve

Hi guys, I've been having this problem the last few days where I am unable to update my trend micro antivirus. Every time i try to update i receive a message saying "could not connect to the server, please check your internet connection"" despite having full internet access. I have also been having problems with windows update, where updates continuously fail whenever i try to update them. Additionally i noticed that while browsing the internet my connection occasionally timed out, so i pinged a large website like goal.com on cmd and saw that the connection timed out. I ran a full antivirus scan using the trend micro and the kaspersky tool (KVRT.exe) and found no threats to be detected. I also tried using malwarebytes to scan the computer but when i installed it it required to update its databases before scanning and hence that update also timed out. I tried flushing the dns and and resetting the ip using netsh as well as other past solutions found on here to no avail. Your help and time would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Okay, it seems the model computer I have has had problems all across the boards. Well, I'm on an Emachines T1840. I recieved this computer from a teacher at Job Corps. She told me there was something wrong with the motherboard and that the screen stayed blank at startup. I went and bought a new ATI video card since it seemed the onboard video card was burnt out somehow. Then after we installed the new video card, we booted it up. Halfway into startup, it started rebooting it's self. There was a Windows XP Partition on it, so we figured that was corrupt and we installed a version of Windows2000 from a boot disc. Well, that got as far as putting in a registration key. We couldn't find a working key for that, so we went and bought a windows XP upgrade disc. We got past the registration key entry and it began installation after a brief reboot. Now, it stays at 39 minutes remaining, and after about 15 minutes it brings up a blue screen. It says something along the lines of this. "Setup cannot continue, cannot read file (Forgotten file name here)" And then it says "If this is the first time you have recieved this message, reboot and continue setup" And then it proceeds to dump the physical memory. I re-did setup a few times with the same error message. So, I'm just wondering, what the heck am I supposed to do? It's actually pretty rare that I'm stumped on something like this.

I tried everything from re-install the updates to try a clean installation of windows 10 with the media creation tool - the installation quits with a failure.
When I try to boot from the stick and install win 10 the win 10 installation does not find any hard drives although I have one on which my current win 10 installation is running at the moment!

Do you have any suggestions to fix the update problems or how to detect the hard drives to perfom a clean install of my win 10 on my XPS 15 ?

Now Im also getting the BSOD when I'm working at least every hour. I also cannot run sfc/scannow. i gives me the error message "Windows Resource Protection ould Not Start the Repair Service"

I really do not want to reinstall the OS and all my applications for the 3rd time. Thanks for you help in advance.

A:Windows 7 Update Failure

The fact that you are getting the same problem after a reinstall indicates that you may be making the same mistake each time.

Having said that, the indications are that there may be a hardware problem with your machine - possibly either RAM or the hard drive.
There are a number of errors in the CheckSUR results which are the result of bitflips - where a single character has been altered in a registry entry. One or two is not that unusual - but you have more than a dozen.

I can fix these, but it's likely to happen again unless you isolate and eliminate the cause.
I would suggest starting by testing the RAM for errors.

I am trying to help someone that has an HP Model p7 - 1026, computer with an AMD Phenom II x 4840T/ 2.90 GHz processor, 6.00 GB Ram, Windows 7 64 Bit.

The problem is Windows Update. The user can access Windows Update, and it initially appears that the updates are downloaded and installed, but they are not. A subsequent update check shows the same updates need to be installed.

No error messages are displayed, no other (obvious) problems.

A Malwarebytes scan found no problems.

A Google search identified something called Windows Update Troubleshooter. Has anyone used this? If so, did it work?

I searched this forum, but could not identify anything that appeared to be relevant.

Any other suggestions?

A:Windows 7 update failure

Hello, I have used the Troubleshooter with various degree of success, here is one tactic that I have used in the past, from the list of updates make a note of two or three by the number at the end, then close out of Windows Updates and go on the Microsoft Support site and download those updates individually and then install them. That will determine if the issue is with OS or with the Windows Updates service (on the computer).

I'm using the Asus Eee Slate EP121. This happened more than once that Windows prompted me to install an update, then fails. Sometimes the update prompt disappears even though it was not installed. Today it prompted me to install an update called "Qualcomm Atheros Communications driver update for Bluetooth Module" and failed.

Error code 80070103.

Can someone help me?

Thanks!

In either IE8 or Mozilla Firefox...when I go to try and get an update, I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message, on either browser. I have a feeling I may have a bug, but Avast, Malwarebytes, Spyware Blaster, nor Spybot S&D have turned up anything. I ran a malicious bug finder from MS, but nothing turned up. So, what nice little creature is keeping me from getting a needed XP windows update? (rootkit?) I've seen this before, a long time ago, and I think I gave up and simply reinstalled XP.
As of late, I have installed superanti spyware program and it found some adware tracker files, and then I quarintined them, but it still does not allow for microsoft update. If I go anywhere near microsoft update, I get the above message. I have tried to post "hyjack this logs" and I can not, because withing the logs, there is a url connected with microsoft update. If I reword the url line, I am then able to post. I was at the techsupport forum and help was attempted, slightly, but it was awhile ago and I doubt I'm going to be helped. At that time, I was advised to run the combo fix program, and I followed their instructions step by step, with no help. So I'm here, to start from scratch. Thx for lending a hand. DM

Please be sure to include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to try to resolve them.If you cannot produce any of the other logs, then please create the new topic anyway, include the information that you were unable to produce the other logs and why and include the ComboFix log along with a description of your computer issues.Orange Blossom

On Tuesday Sept 16, my desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium had an update waiting to install ( Windows update SP1 ). So I went ahead and ran the update install. All went well until the final portion. I got a message saying update failed reverting system back to pre-install state (I'm paraphrasing here ) Anyway, it restored my system and everything is running correctly, EXCEPT ( you knew there'd be and EXCEPT coming ) now it keeps telling me I have updates ready to install. ( the same one that failed ) My question is: I would like to delete this update and try to download it again. ( the download may have been corrupt ) Will doing a system restore to the day before the update download enable me to actually download the update again?

I have my system set-up for an automatic update; however, it has come to my attention that updates have not been occuring. I tried to manually perform an update. When I do this; the Windows Update box opens, but the screen remains blank (solid white). I then cannot close it; as it seems frozen, unless I use the task manager.

I tried getting help some where else; where I always donated a little money for each successful resolution (maybe $5-$10) to a problem. Needless to say that will not be happening anymore. Someone pointed me in the direction of your site, so here I am.

I've never had an issue like this, so this is a new one on me. I know the option for Windows Repair/Reinstall is there; but this is something I want to avoid if possible.

Thank you in advance.

It rebooted twice and then went to the login screen.
What went wrong with the windows update for it to having failed to do a windows update on my machine? Can anyone point me into the right direction to investigate this ?

Hi, if you have Automatic updates enabled switch to "check for updates" in Windows Update, then try to update one by one and see whether updates are installed. Let us know which updates are not installing.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my question!

I'm running a Windows Vista Home Premium OS with AVG Free, Comodo BOClean, and the Comodo Firewall. I just came home from a trip and attempted to update my computer. I had several updates and all of them succeeded except for one of them.
I've tried the suggested actions in the help file (OSE was originally set to manual anyways, but I changed it to Automatic Delayed Start like the help file suggested, but to no avail), but the update still fails:

Failed: 1 Update

Code 80070643

The update is: KB942763

Thanks for the help!

I couldn't get Windows Update to install today's (4-4-17) definitions update for Microsoft Security Essentials for Win 7, 32-bit. Gives error code 0X80070002.
Followed MS instructions to fix this error by stopping WU and deleting certain files/folders from the SoftwareDistribution folder and then restarting WU.
Now WU just searches endlessly for updates. MSE also won't update itself, either.
Anybody else?

A:Windows Update failure

Update:
Ran WU Troubleshooter and it fixed some errors. WU then found a bunch of old updates that I'd previously hidden, along with today's MSE definitions. I accepted one old update and today's definitions.
The old update installed but Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.239.797.0) failed again with the same 0X80070002 error code.
I googled for 1.239.797.0 and found a single result which reports an update failure today for Windows Defender Definitions with that same file number (for Win 10) but different error code. So maybe there's a problem with the definitions file itself...?
Guess I'll have to wait to see if the next MSE update gets installed.
And I just scanned with MSE which seemed to run correctly and didn't find anything.

Ok, so I have trawled all the Windows Update sites and have not been able to solve my problem. By accident I ended up on the fast ring and got stuck on 14905. The problem I have is that it downloads fine. It configures ok and then attempts to install. It reboots and gets to 1% and then quickly jumps to 15% and instantly reboots. It then 'restores to previous version of windows'. I suspect (with no expertise) it must be a setting somewhere in the BIOS as it has happened to Windows Update 14926 and with the latest 14931. Any of you guys got a suggestion I could try only it says I have until 1 October to rectify. I'm dreading a clean install. Thanks in advance

I recently had a Windows XP machine (HP Pavilion 783C), of which I performed a System Recovery. After which I noticed my SP1 update failed to connect to Microsoft's update server. I went to Microsoft and downloaded the update again and the same thing happened. My ultimate goal was to install SP3, but SP3 requires SP1 to be installed. I was left with no other option but to do an in-place install of Windows XP(OEM) SP3. This was probably the quickest option with the exception that I had to convert a Retail disk to an OEM disk before I could get the machine activated.

Has anyone else had issues installing Windows XP SP1 update? Or possibly a better solution than a re-install which will require re-activating.

Maybe what I'm asking for is a Windows XP SP1 update that doesn't phone home and require a connection to Microsoft's servers that they obviously shut down.

Windows XP is very good but Microsoft are keen to move people on. When XP was fairly new my internet connection was a telephone modem. Large downloads were not very practical. I requested and received from Microsoft a free XP Service Pack 2 CD. This was posted from Germany and dated 21-03-05. It would be great if they made available for download an ISO for XP with service pack updates and including drivers for current SATA systems but I don't think it will ever happen. I'm sure people would pay to download a legitimate product.

Attempts to update result in continuous 'Checking for Updates' together with CPU use of 50 to 100% and very high memory use. I have to stop this endless service (wuauserv) with Task Manager. I've seen this failure all over the internet and tried all the MSoft 'Fixit's and other remedies I could find ... all with no success.

So I guess this is my last effort before I say goodbye to this PC.

Anyway, I tried to follow the instructions for posting this thread. Here are my results

1. SURT loaded up (and ran?) to 90% then stalled (yes, I waited for an hour)
2. SFC ran and found corrupt files that it couldn't fix. I cannot attach the resulting log zip file because it exceeds the forums upload limit of 8Mb (my CAB zip file is 10 Mb)
3. During a couple of my fix attempts, somewhere (MalwareBytes?)the following error message appeared: Windows Error Not Fixed: 0x80070005 (2015-11-07T-10_31_06A)
4. My 10 Mb CBS zip file is too large to upload (see #2 above) Might there be some way around this limit?

Other than Windows Update stalling, this PC runs normally.

Thanks in advance for anything you can do to solve this very time consuming Windows Update failure.

Hi all,
My computer keeps trying to install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 Update (KB976932) and never succeeds. It has been happening since April 2013 as I see in the update history, each time attempting to install it during shutting down. For a few minutes after computer launch Windows Update downloads updates anew, causing the system to slow down a bit.
The SP1 does not appear under the system version at Computer properties.

When installing through Update window, I get the following error:
Code 80004005 - Windows Update encountered unknown error

Attachment 309925

I've run several adviced FixIt applications all in vain, also downloaded the SP1 update manually (with antivirus temporarily switched off) - but that ended up with the very same error.

Attachment 309922

I followed the Posting Instructions, hope I hadn't missed anything. The CBS logs folder is available here:

Any hint will be appreciated, thanks in advance. If any files or more system information is neede, feel free to ask.

There could be many causes for your problem, but one very possible cause is a hard drive that has corrupted segments (beginning to fail). Test your hard drive.

when trying to use 'windows update' to install various security and system updates, updates download and then fail to install, and I get the message

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.

the troubleshooter hasn't helped any, and after four tries one gets sick of watching the system download the same updates over and over. I can install the updates by hand, locating them in microsoft's downloads and running them individually, but there's a limit to how many update packages one is willing to search out and download in this manner...

Hi .

I have this same situation since 2 days ago .

I haven't spent much time trying to figure out if it's a problem with the updates or the system...or what to do about it. If I spend some time on it later today, I will post my suspicions/findings.
