Q: HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC Battery issues

Hi, My battery status shows "0% available(plugged in, not charging)" since a few days and without AC power supply, the laptop does not switch on. The white light keeps blinking when I plug in the AC supply (always now). I have tried the famous solution : "Please perform below shown steps to resolve the issue:Step 01. Click on the Start ButtonStep 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device ManagerStep 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the leftStep 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstallStep 05. Please Shutdown the NotebookStep 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power AdapterStep 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 MinuteStep 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power AdapterStep 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon " After this, the problem still exists. ...I went ahead to check my battery status through HP Support Assistant. The battery status says: Unknown (93) Any smart ideas to resolve this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Today I purchased a brand-new HP Pavilion 15-N214TX notebook. When I got home, I unboxed it, inserted the battery, plugged it into the wall, and powered it on for the very first time. I then saw this message:

HP Battery Alert
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low.
For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
Primary (internal) Battery (601)
ENTER - Continue Startup
For more information, please visit: www.hp.com\go\techcenter\startup

Windows reports, Plugged in and not charging.

I've removed and re-inserted the battery, gone into the HP Support Assistant application and ran a battery check (only for it to report that it can't find a battery!), and I've ran the pre-boot diagnostics, which also reports that there's no battery inserted. I saw somewhere that you should remove AC power before running the tests. When I pressed the power button while the laptop wasn't plugged into AC, the charging light simply blinked white three times. I could at one point get into the pre-boot diagnostics on battery power, but I still saw the message telling me that no battery was found.

This is a great laptop, it's super fast, software installs quickly, programs open quickly, it shuts down and boots quickly, but this battery issue is a huge letdown. I don't expect this kind of an issue from a brand-new ~$1100 laptop.

Please help!

Perhaps, the manufactures has shipped you faulty battery. Consider placing an RMA order as it's still in warranty.

Hello, Since a couple weeks ago, I have noticed my laptop battery capacity has been significantly lower than before. Without charging, the laptop lasts about 1 hour while it used be around 3 hours. I was thinking about to purchase a new battery in case my current suddenly won't be usable anymore. I have searched for a couple of laptop batteries on the internet to find that all of them were either not similar to mine or had different capacities. At the moment I don't know what to buy, I am not planning on replacing my laptop for at least another year and I'm afraid the battery won't last that long. My laptop is an HP Pavilion 17-f040nd and uses the battery that came through the shipment. The battery and laptop are both 2 years old and have been used almost every day. The battery has a voltage of 14,8V and a capacity of 2700 mAp. It'd be nice if someone could tell what battery I should buy to ensure replacement for my current one. Regards,Mats.

Hello, Two weeks after my one year warranty was up my laptop started shutting off when the battery was around 30-40%.  I checked the battery using the HP Support Assistant Diagnostic Check and it continues to say the "Primary battery is OK."  I've also noticed that since this started happening the battery won't fully charge.  It only charges to 90-94% then shows "94% available (plugged in, not charging)."  I used to unplug the battery until the battery saver (set at 20%) would turn on then I'd fully charge it and repeat.   I use my laptop for work so I'm usually plugged in 8-14 hours a day for five days a week.  I shut it off every night as well.  Am I missing something or is this the battery life I should get?  Did I use it too much?  I purposefully got a long life battery because for work. I found the article below which sounds similar to my situation and wanted to ask anyway. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Pavilion-15-notebook-sudden... This is my first HP and I didn't have battery issues like this with any previous laptop doing the same amount of work/usage for at least 2+ years.  Is this the way HP's are?  Am I supposed to expect this type of performance out of my laptop? Thanks for any help/suggestions/words of wisdom.

We have found that our battery is not charging.  We now need to have the laptop constantly plugged in to make it have power.   Sometimes when we turn the computer on, as it doesnt hold enough power now to go to sleep mode that it has an error message displaying about the battery and needing to do something about it but it always moves to the next screen too quickly for me to understand what the issue is and what to do about it. Can you please point me in the right direction on how we can resolve this issue as it is annoying.  The minute the power chord comes out of the computer, the power is lost. Regards,Kellie Anthony

First off, I will say that the main battery I am using is not an HP OEM battery, however, it has been verfied to work and charge correctly in another family member's dv6 notebook.  Furthermore, I have access to an HP OEM battery, from a family member's dv6, with which I have confirmed the same issue.  FYI: I replaced my OEM battery about a year ago with an aftermarket battery when my OEM battery stopped holding a charge.  This happened after before my laptop was 2 years old.

So, here's a description of the problem.  About a month ago, even though my laptop was plugged in to the AC adapter, the battery stopped charging.  The laptop continued to work until the battery completely ran out of charge.  Once that happened, the laptop shut down, DESPITE still being connected to the AC adapter.  At this point, as long as the battery was installed in my laptop, with the AC adapter still connected, it would not power up.  The only way I could get it to power up was to remove the battery.  Then, it would boot up just fine, but of course, I was now tethered via the AC cord, turning my laptop into a "thin and light desktop".  If I attempted to put the battery back while the computer was on, connected to the AC adapter, it would shut down IMMEDIATELY.  I took ... Okay, so the type of battery you have is designed to last approximately 1 year (see link below) it has lots of links to other useful docs too.http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00596784 HP & other companies do sell Long life batteries but they cost more.We would ask you to put the unit in our unit and run Battery check which is inside HP Support Assistant, make sure you have the latest version, same for your BIOS Version. You will see there are bunch of tips on how to make your battery last longer, but you really need to start doing them from the start, if your battery is already 1 year old there is a good chance it is low enough on it's capacity to require you buying a new one.You should check out our site, they often have sales, and Batteries would be under accessories.Check out other sites too, compare. Good luck.

This cannot be because of low power as I was charging the battery overnight, albeit directly. (I was using wire to charge, connect it to universal AC adapter that wont fit in the pc) This may be because the battery took too much voltage from the direct charging, and many of you may be tempted to scream USE AC ADAPTER IDIOT but I don't have it I may have misplaced it. I bought my hp Pavilion notebook in India. Now I live in the UK. For the last month or so, I've problems with my laptop. Whenever the laptop is on battery, it discharges very quickly. It randomly shuts off (not shut down, just shuts off with a gut wrenching clink of the hard disk) anytime below 50% charge. no notification of low battery or going into hibernation. It may happen in the middle of typing a sentence, or browsing. I ran diagnostics. HP battery check software first showed a "weak battery" result. I was about to order a new battery, when I ran the software again, which now says "primary battery OK". It is very confusing, as even if we agree that the battery has developed a problem, I can't understand why the system is not detecting low battery or putting the computer to hibernate, as per the settings. I've checked drivers - updated. The laptop is just one year and 3-4 months old. Should I replace the battery? Or is it a software error from the new windows 10 upgrade?Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a problem with my HP Pavilion notebook, the notebook is not used frequently and it's just out of warranty. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 and I am not sure if that has caused the problem, may be just a coincidence?
The problem is that the battery is on 0% charge and displaying, "0% available plugged in not charging."

Because the battery is on 0%, could this be the problem? I read somewhere that if the battery goes completely flat it will not take a charge from the notebook charging system, is this correct? Or any other ideas would be appreciated to get it working again.

I have a HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC (Product Number F6C70PA#ABG), and since I have upgraded to Windows 10 (current version 10.0.14393) last year I have had nothing but trouble with it. 1) First, when I use the shutdown option in the power menu, the notebook will not turn off; the screen goes black but the fans continue to run, and the Wireless Antenna light goes orange but does not turn off. The power button in the top left also stays lit. The only way to turn the device off properly is to hold the power button down for 5 seconds. 2) But even when I turn the power off by holding down the power button, I have recently discovered that the notebook is still draining power. If it is turned off, and the AC power removed, the battery is completely drained when I next come to try and turn it on. This is despite the fans not running while the power is turned off in this fashion. 3) Also recently, when booted up the notebook takes an excessively long time. After approximately 2-3 minutes from power off, the notebook will display the coastal scene. I press the up key or click my mouse to bring up the login box, but the login box takes another 2-3 minutes to appear. After inputting my password, it takes approximately another 2-3 minutes to finish booting the desktop.  I note that, in an attempt to follow other tech support advice to allow the notebook to shutdown properly (to solve problem 1 above), I have previously turned off the fast boot option.  However, it... Hello, For 2-3 weeks my laptop has been turning off with 30-50% battery left.  As soon as it is plugged in, I have no problems. While attempting to turn the computer back on (before I plug it in) the computer usually shuts down before I get to the login screen.  On a few occasions, however, I have succesfully logged in and started my web browser before it shuts down again.  Every time that my computer dips into this margin, it kills all proccesses (unexpected shutdown).  I have tried different power options, but they just delay how long the battery stays above 30-50%. I do not know of any other details.    Thanks for readingIsenfireLDC

All we can do here is provide links to troubleshooting steps that HP has written, and links to HP drivers. If those links don't diagnose or fix the problem, or those drivers don't work, your only recourse is to take the PC into an HP Service Center and have them look at it.Without the detailed product number of your laptop, I can not do a search for drivers, so please follow these instructions for finding the detailed product number: Finding Your HP Product Model Number | HP® Customer Support Also, you said you "reinstalled the operating system".  Was that Win10, or was it Win8x?  And, if it was the latter, HOW did you do the reinstall?  Did you do it through the HP Recovery Manager? Did you use HP Recovery Disks? OR, did you do it from a Windows DVD?We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Hey,

I bought a 12 cell HP battery off of ebay (it is not a battery made by HP). Now this is a great battery which lasts me between 5-7 hours.

Now it does last 5-7hours, but I have issues getting the battery to power the computer on.
I first place my 6 cells battery which was made by HP and power on my computer. When the 6 cell is dead, I try to replace it with the 12 cell but the 12 cell won't power the computer on. When I place the AC adapter into my computer, it turns the laptop on. I can take the AC cable out of my computer and the 12 cells keeps the computer powered for 5-7 hours. I can shut my computer off and the 12 cell powers it back on.

The only time the 12 cell can't power my computer on is when the 6 cell is in there previously. What is wrong, and how do I fix this?

A:Odd notebook battery issues.

Simply don't use the 6 cell. If you really need a back-up, buy another 12 cell.

I have an HP Pavilion G6, (AMD A6 Vision quad core, AMD Radeon Graphics) running Win7 (64 bit) Home Premium that is giving me a couple issues: 1.  The laptop runs extremely hot.  (I know it has a single fan - so part of the issue).  I've burned myself a couple times when touching the left side where the vent is located.  Always use this with a USB cooling fan pad underneath now!  Is there anything to help cool it down more? 2.  I have my power settings set to maximize battery life.  When using my G6 on battery, it will abruptly shut off ( not giving the low battery warning) when the battery is still charged.  I've had it happen with as much as 78% battery still left and as low as 30% battery still left.  It seems to happen most frequently in the 50-60% range.  I'm only able to use it about 30 minutes unplugged.  I don't think that I have switchable graphics. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?  Cheers!K

A:HP Pavilion G6 Battery Issues & Heat Issues

Hello kja107,

Your laptop is getting to hot and the battery is not holding a charge.

The laptop may be shutting off because the system is getting too hot, not from the battery.

Go to HP .com and update the BIOS. This may help with the heat.

Here is a link to the update. You?ll need your product number.

You can find this information by holding the FN key and pressing the ESC key.

Make sure that there is no buildup of dust inside the computer by cleaning the vents with compressed air.

Here is a link to a document that will show you how to reduce heat.

Also here is a link to test and calibrate the battery.

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Hello, guys. I got this laptop since March 2016. I have been using it daily ever since (around 12 hours a day with ~6 hours of it spent gaming). I have had this problem for about a month now. It got worse just this week. I will now try to describe the problem and my usage behavior leading up to the problem.Model: HP Pavilion Gaming Notebook 15-ak025TXOS: Windows 10 Home 64-bitProcessor: Intel Core i7-6700HQRAM: 16.0 GBGPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 950M THE PROBLEM: I actually have a lot of issues all related to POWER and BATTERY. Said issues just started manifesting about a month ago. The problems evolved like this:> The issue started with a sudden shutdown while I was gaming. No warnings, no "low battery" notifications, no "shutting down" screen, nothing. It just shut off suddenly. I thought maybe i just missed the notification but shouldnt the laptop display the "shutting down" screen when the battery reaches critical level? Hi HP, I have been having this issue since I bought this Pavilion series laptop. Its been a year and I didn't report this issue earlier as I thought it was just a small lag but it has aggravated. My laptop is running quite slowly as compared to other PCs. Whenever I open a new task, or search something in Cortana, open a new program, or even do a right-click for a refresh it keeps it takes around 10-15 seconds to respond on average. Even tasks which have no overhead like creating a new folder are also quite slow with a similar waiting time period of 10 seconds. It has become frustrating. I am not a hardware engineer but this doesn't seem to be a hardware problem. I have noticed that its performance dropped whenever the Nvidia GeForce Drivers and ExperienceService upgraded. Plus nowadays it has started to become hot too. I would also like to point out that when my notebook upgraded Windows from 8.1 to 10 its performance became better till the time Nvidia drivers got upgraded and gained Windows 10 support.During the period from Windows upgrade to Nvidia upgrade all the functions ran smoothly plus the responce time was great. It would be great if you could help resolve this issue as I am sure many other users would have been experiencing the same. Regards Pritish Sehzpaul

It is 15-e037cl model number. Not sure why you are upset with HP; your problems only started after you installed Windows 10 which HP did not make you do. Nevertheless it should work fine on your laptop.  The drop in internet speed when you run on battery is likely a power setting. When you shift to battery sometimes processor speed and other performance is slowed down to extend battery life. That can be overridden in the power settings.  The official specs on your model laptop do not list bluetooth: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03885347 It would help to see a screenshot of the device manager just to see if you have the right drivers installed. AMD computers in particular do not seem to do well on the generic drivers Windows 10 seems to want to install.

HP pavilion dv6700 notebook

Product Number: FH670UA#ABC

Intel Core 2 Duo CPUT5550

========================

Upon catching a bug virus, I took no chance and formatted everything, instead of the system recovery solution (F11) since there was a virus there anyway, so I did not want to take any chance.

Since I did not make any CD/DVD from from the previous Windows Vista system that came with the Notebook, I went buying a brand new Windows XP Pro DVD. But now the Install of Windows XP Pro keeps failing with error "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer " when chosing the option "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER".

I have no other option to chose other from 'To repair Windows XP Installation using recovery console, Press R" and to quit setup, Press F3. But no options to boot the install from a 2nd, 3rd partition.

Obviously, the Hard drive is on a 2nd, 3rd partition of the hard drive and Windows XP Install can't access it.

So I loaded a Boot CD, ran fdisk from Bart's CDROM Boot Diskbut it fails with error "AUTOEXEC: Booted drive ia sL Setting up Ram disk at drive q: Autoexec Aborted" and it would not launch fdisk. I guess it has to do with the fact that the system booting drive is on a 2nd, 3rd partition. I usually have no problem using fdisk or partition magic to merge all partition in one, get the partition activated and boot the install from there, but on my notebook I seem to not be able to ... A:Issues installing Windows XP on my hp pavilion dv6700 notebook

That's because XP does not have the SATA drivers for the Hard Drive .. so it doesn't see it.
If you know the Driver .. it can be slipsteamed into the XP install CD.
Even if you can do this, you'll probably have trouble finding the other drivers that are missing.

Have you though about getting the recovery DVDs from HP ??
You should have recovered from the recovery partition .. it was safe.

Hi.  I have a:HP Pavilion g4-1125dx Notebook PCModel #: LW342UA When it was upgraded to windows 10 i lost all USB functionality.  The device manager is using a driver but it isn't functioning properly.  'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller' and 'Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller' have the yellow exclaimation point with USB symbol next to them.  Under properties it reads: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39){Unable to Load Device Driver}%hs device driver could not be loaded.Error Status was 0x%x When i try to roll back the driver nothing is available.  When i try to update it says i already have the best driver.  I tried windows update and the Driver Easy software but no luck there. I confirmed that i do infact have power getting to the ports (via usb fan :/) so i don't believe it is a hardware problem, especially since it was working prior to upgrade. I know its an older laptop but I Upgraded the CPU to a Phenom II N970 quad core and the darn thing runs so good i hate to give up on her.  Ethernet and Wireless are working properly and there are no other troubled hardware issues. Thanks in advance,Cory

Hi,  I am having a weird battery issue on my HP laptop. The laptop is about 3 years old and wasn't used that often. The battery has been fine up until I took the laptop apart to replace the RAM. I used a static strap and didn't do anything that would of affected the battery but I don't know. I think this happened just because I unplugged the battery when I was working on the computer. Anyway, now I get an error code:    This is what the ERROR CODE says if you can't read that:   HP Battery Alert The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance this battery may need to be replaced.  Primary (Internal) Battery (601) Enter - Continue Startup For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup So this is basically saying my battery is going bad, BUT I don't believe that. One reason is that I checked the health of the battery in multiple ways. One way is through the UEFI Battery check which I checked the battery and the power supply multiple times and they all came back as PASSED with no problems. I've also used the battery check command in command line (cant remember it right this second) but that also came back with no issues. ALSO I ran the test on HP support assistant and that as well came back with no issues.  The problem is this. My laptop will be completely dead so I'll hook it up to the AC power suppl... Read more

I have had this computer for about a year, it was in sleep mode for a few hours and then when I went to use it that battery seemed to be dead. I plugged it up then I got an error 601 screen where it said the internal battery could be messed up. So I have been trying to do a battery check the F2 version and even on the hp support assistant. The HP support assistant version always stops working and the F2 version never finished and took over an hour. I just want to know if the internal battery needs to be changed or not. I can't unplug the computer without it dying.

Hi there @gnbistritz?,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I read your post on the HP Support Forums. After reading your post, I understand that the battery on your HP Pavilion 13-a010dx x360 Convertible PC dies if it is not plugged in. You had also mentioned that you received a 601 Battery Error.  I did some research and found some documents for you based on the issue you had described.  HP Battery Alert Appears Before Windows Starts - "If Primary (internal) Battery (601) appears in the alert message, it means the measured storage capacity of the primary (internal) battery is less than 25% of the original storage capacity. The number ?601? denotes the associated error code that is recorded in the system log."Battery Does Not Power Notebook or Hold a Charge - "If your notebook computer battery does not power the notebook or will not hold a charge, troubleshoot the battery to see if it needs to be replaced."Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 10) - "To know the condition of your battery, use the steps in this article to test your battery and calibrate it if necessary."Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post and let me know the results. Thank you!Have a great day!

I have had the exact same problem since I went to shut down 2 days ago and it said it needed to update first. So i chose update and shut down from the menu and in the morning the power light was still on but the computer didn't wake up so i powered down from the button and since then i cannot unplug the battery bc it immediately shuts down, i get the 601 battery error code on start up and the battery test from hp assistant doesn't finish (i get an error message and it ends). I followed each of the 3 links above and have had no luck bc when I run the battery check with the F2 command on start-up it just freezes (says press any key to cancel, I do and nothing happens) and never completes. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've only have the computer for a year and a half!

Hi @Kayleecan, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums!  I see on your HP Pavilion 13-a010dx x360 Convertible and the error Primary (internal) Battery (601) appearing. Try removing the CMOS or RTC battery and replacing it, it could be low and causing the Real Time Clock (RTC)to be incorrect which would cause the Internal battery error or not starting correctly. Here is a document to show you how to replace this. Please let me know.  If you wish to say Thanks for my efforts to help, click the Thumbs up to give me a Kudos.   Thanks.

My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Thanks, Robert

The last few days I've been getting a message on start up on my laptop that my internal battery was weak.   The diagnostics I ran confirmed this.  I saw the HP replacement battery wasn't reviewed very well on the HP web site so I purchased a Duracell replacement battery.  It appears to be working well, except now I no longer have a battery icon in my lower tray so I have no idea what my battery level is.  When it gets low, it gives me no warning and just shuts the laptop down.  It also doesn't indicate when I am using my power cord.  Is there anything I can do to change this?

Hello.  I would be grateful if someone can help me with solving the following battery issue.
My XPS13 9343 (with Windows 10, 2015 model) recently stopped charging when connected.  I have conducted BIOS test, stress test, system test, battery test recommended on Dell forum, but could not find any issues.
Then ran device manager and checked & updated drivers, tested for virus, scanned the system, but could not detect any issues.
Lights on AC adopter is on (static) , and the front light under the touch pad turn on white briefly when connected then turn off immediately when plugged in (when disconnected, orange light comes on).
It seems charging is disabled...I might have touched keys without realizing (I checked whether there were hot key to enable/disable charging, but could not find one).
Since it is an ultrabook, and the battery has no issues, I have not opened the back to take out the battery.
I brew into the connecting hole, but it did not solve the issue.
Please help!

Dear ejn63,
Thank you very much for the quick reply.
I just did F2 at powerup and found the adapter was displayed as 'Unknown.'
I would order the new AC adapter today and see how it goes.
Will report when solved.
Thank you again.

Hey there,
Yes you read it correctly: I have just received mine, which I purchased because of battery life and overheating and fan noise issues on the Dell XPS 13 i7 7th gen. The 8th gen was supposed to have solved all the issues the previous version was plagued with...
Well... I unboxed it, loaded all of my softwares, installed all the WIndows updates, Dell drivers, you name it. Charged it and started using it. When I unplugged the power cord, first estimate was 4hrs on the Windows battery indicator. Then I installed BatteryBar to have a more reliable estimator. Same.
Later on, I discovered a very strong and very loud fan. Unsurprisingly, the underneath was burning hot.
Got the support team on the phone, whilst I was talking with them, the fan kicked in and I even could give them a glimpse of how loud that was over the phone.
Has any of the lucky owners of the XPS 13 i7 8th gen come across similar issues?
Sometimes, I am just baffled by the world there is between the promise and the reality....

A:XPS 13 8th gen i7 16GB RAM QHD+ Battery Issues 4hrs battery life tops

A brand new system may have an unusually high level of background tasks running simultaneously, such as Windows and other applications checking for and downloading updates, Windows monitoring your usage to optimize technologies such as PreFetch for your usage patterns, etc.  You might want to conduct a battery test after things have settled in a bit more.  The QHD+ display takes 2-3 hours off of the expected battery life, but you should still get 7-8 hours under normal use.  Then again, if you're heavy on WiFi and max out display brightness, you'll get less than that.  The fact that the fans are kicking on also suggests there's an unusually high level of background activity running, so check Task Manager to see if you can find out what's responsible for that.
