Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon

Q: Internet connectivity drops; No change in taskbar icon

Hello,

I'm using Win 7 64 bit. Recently, over the past week or so, I've noticed that the internet connectivity will drop after a little while. It can be 5m or perhaps an hour. After this, a reboot is required to reconnect. The strange part about this, is that the icon in the corner that tells you your network connectivity status stays at 5 bars rather than the familiar 5 bars with a caution sign as if there isn't an issue.

Some tests I've tried after this happened before a reboot:

1. ping google.com in cmd
RESULT: Strangely, I receive ping packets back from google, which may explain why the status in the corner stays the same.
2. telnet to google.com on port 80 and send a request.
RESULT: telnet acts strangely. Characters appear black on black and thus are unreadable. I was unable to send an HTTP request to google, and thus the result is inconclusive.
3. Check facebook notifications in chome
RESULT: Oddly enough, I can receive notifications, but I cannot reply, nor click on a new link to open the notification.

After the connection "drops", you will not be able to use chrome, nor firefox to access the internet. Both browsers will send requests that never return packets from the host. One guess I have is that the connectivity does not drop completely, but drops to a pace that is so slow, little information can be loaded.

My initial response to this was: "I have a virus". I downloaded AVG, ran a scan, it found a few viruses, removed them from the computer, rebooted, did another scan and it came up clean. The problem still persists. What disturbs me is that one of the viruses found on my computer ended up to be a "patching virus", a virus that will bind itself to other executables and windows .dll files, slowly taking down the target computer. If this network problem can be attributed to this virus that has been removed, then what should my next action be?

Assuming the virus is not the issue, what should my next course of action be? What are some good network monitoring tools that can monitor speed, and packets sent and received? I would like to get rid of this problem as it's an irritating hindrance to my work.

Thanks,
Dragos

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds like either TCP/IP network stack or winsock is messed up which is a fairly typical problem but virus problems can look like many things.

If it's a virus problem run more scans.

You should also run malwarebytes to check for more virus's .
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro/

Windows security essentials is also worth using.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5201

If you did have a virus it may have messed up the network stack or winsock.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Type or copy each command one at a time into an elevated command prompt then hit "enter" after each one, then reboot your machine.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

If it's something on the wireless side then you should install Xirrus wifi inspector. A screen shot of this will show me the wireless landscape in your area and adjustments can be made from there.

Hello, I would first like to say Hi I'm Brian!

I've been using computers for a very long time now but I occasionally run into some errors.

I was wondering why Firefox keeps telling me that I'm not connect to wireless Internet, even when my toolbar says that I am. I know that I'm still connected because I can still be downloading a program using a third-party downloader at the same time as Firefox is acting up. I've also been trying to use Internet Explorer and it doesn't work either.

I use Windows 7, I've had this computer for less than two weeks!

I also have another question and I through my experience on forum websites, it's better to reduce clutter so I'll post it here: My firewall on McAfee will disconnect right after I click connect?

I've run anti-malware software and it constantly tells me that I have no malware at all!

There haven't been any glitches or lags that tell me I have a virus. Could I have one? McAfee doesn't detect any but I'm sure it's possible that a virus could be hiding somewhere...

hi,

I have a big problem with an hp brio pentiom pc.
it is a network computer running win98se, 128mb ram, 500mhz cpu chip. it is a networked pc connected to verizon DSL through a 4- port linksys router which is connected to an SMC switch we have at work. All other computers on the network do not have this problem except for this pc and another dell optiplex gx1 pc with the same specifications as this one.
What happens is that after 4 or 5 hours the pc's disconnect themselves from the internet and i have to reboot them to regain connectivity.
it's a pain because on one machine we are running gotomy pc software because we have employees who log on from home and do work. overnight the machines disconnected and we cannot get work done. i have tried to re-install tcp/ip. also diabled any power management on the harddrive within windows and the bios but still disconnects. also forgot to mention both these machines that disconnect after 4 or 5 hours have static ip addresses they are not obtaining any leases from a DHCP server.
please help me;
joe

A:dsl internet connectivity suddenly drops

Sounds like a DHCP lease renewal. I would call your ISP and ask them why it is disconnecting at that time interval. It also sounds like Code Red symptoms.

My internet connection is strong, all 5 bars. Randomly though, the connection will be dropped down to Limited Connectivity. Once I disconnect, then reconnect, the internet connection is fine. I can continue browsing with full signal strength. A few minutes later, it's been dropped to limited connectivity again.

We have three laptops in the house. The two Dell's we have are both dropping the internet. The HP laptop hasn't dropped once. My laptop has never had this problem on any other networks I use (I'm only home for the month from school). My parents have said that they never had this problem before on the other Dell either. The fact that the HP still hasn't dropped the connection once makes me thing it might not be the router? I have no idea. Any suggestions???

Are all Machines connected by wireless

A bit contradictory really -
The HP laptop hasn't dropped once. My laptop has never had this problem on any other networks I useClick to expand...

Lets assume a PC issue as other devices are solid assuming they are connected in the same way - ie cable or wireless

I would suggest first looking at the DELL service TAG numbers on a label on the PC and using that info to goto the dell website and updating the network adapter drivers

If wireless lets see an xirrus screen shot - it maybe interference - but would expect all to drop connection

Lets also see the ipconfig /all and ping tests when its working and also when it disconnects - see below

Ill try and be breaf, i have a home security system (arlo) which depends on wifi to function. the cameras are wireless and require my network connection to work. so it dawned on me that my children can just unplug the internet if they want to sneak out (hopefully they haven't figured that out, but if i have they most likely have as well). i want a way or program i can use that will monitor the internet and alert me via email/txt or any other way, that my internet is down!
i apologize in advance if this is something already answered. i simply cannot find what i want. something basic, that just records or alerts me when my internet isnt working. 24/7

A:tracking (monitoring/logging) internet connectivity & drops in connection.

Tell the kids that your alarm company called because your wireless connection went down and they receive a message to this affect and they wanted to know if this was something they should dispatch the police to.  Explain that you don't know how the wifi went down, but if it does go down this will be the response in the future.

Years and years ago I was involved with alarm systems that were connected to a dialer which would call the alarm company when the alarm system was tripped.  When the phone lines were cut the company monitoring the alarm system would see this as the system being tripped and dispatch the police.  So I wouldn't be surprised if they have some means of monitoring you system from their end.  It may be worth calling then to find out what does happen when you wifi goes down.

I have Googled a lot, but found no answer: when I launch a .bat file to run a 16 bit DOS-based program (XyWrite) on my 32 bit Win 7, I see on the taskbar the blue and white icon that is attached here (bottom image). I have a yellow custom icon that I want to use, and I have Resource Hacker and AdSevenIconChanger to make the substitution, but to use them, I need to find the Win7-supplied icon that's to be replaced. But I can't find it. It's not in imageres or shell32.

I also have an .exe version of the shortcut, which also results in the same unlocateable blue-and-white icon. I use a .bat file to launch XyWrite because that at least allows me to get the right icon on the desktop and in Quick Launch--per screen shot below.

Maybe I could determine the mystery icon's location by doing something with the icon cache?

Or, here's a wild thought--is there a way to search the web for an image as such? I mean: could I upload the mystery icon to Google or somewhere and have Google use that image to search Google images?

My God! Google does have the ability to search by image. Apparently, this icon is in grpconv.exe--whatever that is!

You can just right click on it on the taskbar, then right click on where it says Windows Explorer, then properties, change icon, browse to where you have your icon you want to use is at, select it, then Ok/apply. Probably will have to either log on or off, or reboot.

Hello Mialbedwy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use the same method of pinning the Recycle Bin to the taskbar in a folder as a toolbar, but use the application you want instead of the Recycle Bin. This will give it a wider space.

I've spent last 3 days trying to google it out. Something i realized:

2. It's not the icon of pinned shortcut
3. It's not the icon of filetype

Would appreciate any kind of help.

I am helping a friend that has a Dell desktop computer that is set up with a Verizon wireless router so that his house has a secured network. He is also using an Dell Inspiron laptop. I have set up his printer so that it has wireless connectivity.

My question is that When I go start and look up the tree I find no "Connect To" which I would think should offer available wireless networks to select from. There is also NO ICON in the tray (the little monitors) to show that he is online.

The strange thing is that all works and his connectivity is fine.

What do I need to do so that I can have the icons for connectivity show in the tray and also for a listing (above help, my computer, search, etc.) when you click on start.

I've worked with lots of computers but never seen one to work like this.

Thanks for any and all help.

A:Icon In Tray Showing Internet Connectivity

Easy fixes .

To enable the Connect To listing: Right-click on Start, click on Properties. Click Customize button on Start Menu tab, then click Advanced tab. Scroll down to Network Connections, put mark in Display As Connect To Menu.

To enable the connection icon: Go to Connection, right-click, select Properties. General tab. Put check mark in Show Icon...., click OK.

Should take care of it (I hope).

I can't fathom out this weird problem, on my Icon in the taskbar for Internet access It has a Red cross at the bottom right corner of the Icon, but my Internet connection works fine, so does my Home Network to my old XP machine and to my Smart TV and Blu Ray player, even to my Mobile phone.

Anybody know why it's got this red x on it please ?

A:Red X on Internet Icon in the Taskbar

Hi Atomic245,

The 'Red cross' Network icon in the 'system tray' indicates a connection that is not being used. Since your PC is connecting fine to the internet, it is likely that you have more than one 'Network connections' available for use. It is also likely that the system is connected to the internet either through 'Ethernet or Wireless'; and the other one is installed/disabled.

Please follow these steps to capture more information:

1. Click 'Start' and type 'ncpa.cpl' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' > Capture and share details

2. Click 'devmgmt.msc' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' (Device Manager Opens) > Locate and Expand 'Network Adapters' category > Capture details of all 'devices' that are listed underneath (Also check if any of these devices has a question mark/exclamation mark' besides it) > Also check 'Other Devices' category and share details of any device that is listed with a 'mark' besides it.

3. Open Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig /all' (without quotation) and tap 'Enter'. The window will display detailed information about the working of 'network connections' in the system.

Do reply with the information; would be glad to assist.

PLEASE HELP I AM VERY DISTURBED WITH THIS ISSUE, I am also not much knowledgeable on networking so will need step by step assistance sorry.
Issue: I got a new laptop HP 6730s from my company with Windows XP professional SP3. When I connect to my wireless router + modem named Beetel 450BX1 (ADSL2 + modem) I lose internet connection after few minutes (approx 5). The wireless Icon says I am connected with excellent signal but I cannt connect to any new page and get an error message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

If I open the wireless icon and then press disconnect and then connect to my network, the IE starts working but again only for few minutes.

Few important points as FYI:
1) There is no issue when I connect the LAN cord to same laptop, it works perfect.
2) I still have my old laptop from the company and it doesn't have any problem in accessing the home wireless.
3) This wireless issue does not happen in Office, there it works smoothly without any issues.
4) There are not any wireless connections in y locality except mine and my channel is 11.

PLEASE HELP......... I am getting nuts with this issue.

Regards
Sumit

A:Loss internet connectivity after a few minutes though wireless icon says connected

Sounds like you did not set the wireless encryption key correctly. You get a physical connection with wireless but if the security keys don't match you don't get to go thru the router ie. no internet. Usually this shows up if you go to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig it either shows zeros for ip [autoassign not enabled] or you get a 169.254.x.x ip which isn't valid for your lan subnet.

Redo your wireless security key on the new laptop

Now the icon go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar then right-click on the Firefox shortcut click on properties make sure you're in the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon Button. After you open up Firefox again icon will revert back to the default icon because it opens up Firefox.exe you would have to change the icon in the .exe for a permanent change.

Its kind of hard to explain, but I'll try. For example if you were to click IE and open your home page you would have an icon there in your task bar. Now say you minimize that one and open yet a new IE page, you should now have to IE explorer icons there. In my case that dosen't happen.. I can open the first one and minimize it, but when I open the second one it takes over the place of the first. This only happens under my account, all others are fine. It started doing this when I deleted my first account and started a new one. I have tried everything I know and have finally given up . If anyone out there could help me I would be very grateful.Thanks,Miss_Peppymint

This pc is running xp pro and connected directly to a dsl router. I have two icons in the taskbar - one is 'local area connection' as normal. However the second is labeled 'internet connection'. When i double click on it - the click on properties, "This connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection on another computer".
There is one other in the building connecting to the internet - but theres not meant to be any inter-pc networking going on.

In the meantime - since noticing the above - if i click on 'internet connection', it will not display as it used to do before.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

New user of Windows 7 here. I have the Internet Explorer icon pinned to my taskbar. However, when I click on the IE icon, it changes from an icon to a bar representing the IE window that has opened. I'm wanting to keep the single icon on the taskbar, even when IE is open, like you were able to in XP. Any suggestions?

I was uninstalling lots of software,my son's game demos and cleaning up the PC
(I go through such a crisis every some months) when I realized that I don't have anymore
an icon for my internet connection (ADSL) at tray though I'm connected.

"Show icon..." box under my connection's properties
it is checked and no "hide icons" at the taskbar...

I have no way to disconnect ,only to shut down the PC.
When I go to Control Panel-Network Connections and right click
my connection icon some parts of the menu are greyed.

For some reason I didn't have System restore points for more
than two days and I can't fix it this way...
Any ideas ?

For starters, let me say off the bat that my cable modem and internet connection
works fine when using my mac laptop and my playstation 2.

My PC is a P4 2.8 Ghz w/ ECS 648FXA Motherboard, 2Gb RAM, and 3 160 GB Hard Drives. I am running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and all the latest updates. It was assembled by magic micro computers, and has worked fine for the 3 years that I've owned it, until performance started to slow severely due to a failing boot drive disk cache.

Recently, I copied my PC's boot drive to a new drive, using the software that came bundled with the new drive (Maxblast 4, from Maxtor). After this, I switched
the jumpers on the new drive to make it the boot drive for the PC. I then switched the configuration of the jumpers on
the old boot disk to make it a slave disk. I connected the primary IDE channel to the new boot drive, left my third hard drive connected to the second connection on the IDE cable connected to the motherboard's primary IDE channel, and connected the old boot disk (now jumpered to be a slave) to the second connection on the IDE cable connected to the motherboard's primary IDE channel. I kept my DVD drive connected to the first connection on the IDE cable connected to the motherboard's secondary IDE channel, as it always was.

The computer operates much faster now with the new boot drive.

However, now I can't connect to the internet through any application on my PC, except MS
Outlook Express (weird, ... Read more

If you have any 3rd party firewall, uninstall it until you get things working.

I have to admit that I've lost track of whether you have any connectivity at all, but try the following. It can't hurt, and if you do have internet access but browsers don't work, this will probably be your fix. You'll probably need to download the first one to your working computer and transfer it over.

Winsock fix

(From JohnWill)

Try this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Reboot and see if the situation changes. If that doesn't do it, try these two commands.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Could anyone tell me of a firewall (free or paid) that has a taskbar icon that turns to flickering lights whenever internet activity takes place.  I use Windows 7 Pro and would really appreciate anyone letting me know of such a firewall.

I have XP on a second older computer with ZoneAlarm Pro and I love how ZoneAlarm's little 'Z' in the taskbar changes to flickering lights to let you know when there's internet activity.  I have no idea why the company decided to remove this wonderful feature from later versions of the program.  This feature is invaluable for letting me know if there is NO activity where there SHOULD BE ... or if there IS activity when there SHOULDN'T be.

I found a small utility call 'LanLights' that put an activity light in the taskbar, but what I really want is a firewall that has that feature built-in as part of the program.

Cheers

I asked this question on the Microsoft Community with no answers, apart from thinking I meant the small globe on the Internet connected icon, hence the bracketed part on the title.

About two months ago, a full size Globe Icon started to appear on my taskbar regularly every day. If I hover over it, nothing is displayed. If I left click on it or double tap, nothing happens. If I right click on it, a small box appears with the only option of 'quit' which if you click, it disappears.

If I right click on the taskbar, when the Globe Icon was on the taskbar, and click 'properties', then 'notification area' and then 'customise',Very briefly at the top of the 'current items' list, was the globe icon with 'no title' alongside it. It then disappeared from the list at the same time as disappearing from the taskbar.

I know it's not a brilliant photo, but I have attached one if it's any help.

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have scanned with both AVG Free 2014 and 2015, and no threats found, and the globe still appears.
Anyone help please ?

I just removed and recovered from a virus a few days ago that disabled my Antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Everything is back to normal except for my system audio. Here is a brief list of my computer specs before I list my specific problem and what I have done so far. If you want any other specifications, let me know and I will gladly give them.

1. Home-built computer, so no specific brand.
2. Abit SG-80DC Motherboard
3. Pentium(R) 4 3.00GHz Processor
4. 3.01GHz, 512 MB of RAM
5. Audio Onboard 5.1 cannels Audio CODEC (Yes, my sound card is built into my motherboard.)
6. RealTek AC'97 Audio with Diver Version: 5.10.0.6030
7. Windows XP SP2

The Problems
I believe my computer was infected with the Trojan.W32.Beagle virus and perhaps one or two others as well. I have managed to rid myself of them, but several sound issues have cropped up in their wake. NOT ONE of these problems was around before I got the virus. They have ALL occurred since I removed the virus using various programs recommended by tech people online. I did actually have sound while I had the virus, so my suspicion is that one of the programs designed to remove the viruses removed something else that it shouldn't have. Here is a list of the problems I am currently having:

1. The volume control icon has vanished from the taskbar.

2. The startup and closing sounds, along with all other system sounds have stopped playing.

3. In the "Sounds" tab area of the "... Read more

My volume icon in Taskbar disappeared a few days ago, along with sounds of any kind (internet, iTunes, WMP...). A diagnostic from Fix My PC revealed the error: "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\System32.exe" ...I'm not sure if that's part of this problem or not.

There are no yellow! prompts in the Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. I haven't identified the virus which likely caused this issue, and I do not have a copy of Windows XP to reinstall as I bought this laptop from my former employer upon leaving the company.

My objective is fix the Sound so it is fully operational again. Any ideas? Please help!

Thank you!

Hi bge2i. Welcome to TSF.

You could try running the command "sfc /scannow" in a command prompt window, which you can access by going to START>ACCESSORIES>COMMAND PROMPT. Let me know if that helps.

1.Get the WMP icon in your desktop. (start > all programs > right click on wmp icon in programs list > send to > desktop.)

2. Right click on it > properties >change icon > browse (to the icon you want)

3. Open wmp , now the icon is in taskbar. Right click > pin the program to taskbar

You are done.

As stated in the title, the Network icon on the taskbar in the bottom right, always shows the disconnected Ethernet, even while I am connected to wifi. I've also tried connecting it via the Ethernet port, and it still shows the disconnected Ethernet icon. Also, not sure if this is related or not, but at every boot, windows tries to install an unidentified-unnamed device. I will post screenshots of the problems.

Here's the screenshots.

I have been trying to change the default shortcut icon for IE. I have one I would like to use that is not just a page with an e. I would like to click a webpage > create shortcut and my icon will be there.

I went into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and changed a bunch of the DefaultIcon to my icon path. C:\Windows\Ico\online.ico

Some changed, but not not all. Some of the icons that did not change, I changed by hand and some go back to the default icon after I open the page.

I would like to replace the top one with the bottom icon.

Can anyone help me on this?

Hi,

I started some consulting work for a company that uses a wireless connection with 2 access points in their office (one on channel 6, the other on channel 11). They use a WPA-PSK key to secure the connection.

The problem is that with about 70% of the laptops that come preimaged from the parent company the following problem happens.
You try to connect to the wireless, enter the password, the authentication passes, an IP address is assigned, it appears connected, about 5 seconds later the connection is dropped, the computer tries to reconnect, it reconnects, then it drops and stops connecting.

I have tried the following things:
Disable all firewalls/antivirus
Reset the TCP/IP stack (using netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt )
Reinstalled the drivers of the card
Tried different software besides the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration (like the software for that driver)
Winsock repair
The other two things I tried with some success is:
Connecting to another wireless connection - worked but only for unsecure
Reformatted Computer (or Repaired Windows installation) - worked for 4 of the 5 computers I tried.
Now the other 30% have a similar yet annoying issue. Everytime I connect to the wireless network I get a limited, no connectivity message. I tried the same kind of things I did above but nothing worked. I'm not sure what the problem is, with one computer i actually replaced the wireless card (only to get the issue that i was getting at the top). Reformatt... Read more
