(Resolved) System Configuration Utility Question

Q: (Resolved) System Configuration Utility Question

I have WinXP.

I just checked my System Configuration Utility - Start Up Tab - and noticed there are two things running that I can't figure out what they are. The problem is there is no entry under the Command. (see image)

Is there a way to tell exactly what they are?

TIA.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Keep scrolling down as pics take up a lot of space.

I am trying to clean out things in my start-up procedure that I don't need when I boot up the computer. Initially I disabled everything. One particular item keeps getting put back on automatically somehow after re-boot. This particular item is related to Dell Support Center. I use it occasionally, but don't need it at startup. This is what is being re-selected. (note checked item)

Here is the process with which I performed this. As stated, Initially I did a <disable all> and clicked on <apply> to which I get a message

I click ok to the message above then <OK> to accept changes and I get the same message again to which I answer ok again. This seems to accept the changes. the next thing I see is the choice to restart or exit without restart. Either way when I do eventually restart I get this message below.

If I simply click ok it seems to keep the changes but dumps me back out to the system configuration Utility screen, which I don't want.

IF I check the box "don't show message or launch system config utility", the next time it I restart or power up again everything is as I selected except it puts the item "sprtcmd" back into the startup procedure again. How can I keep my changes and still not show this message everytime I start up?

Hello all. Using Windows XP SP 2. After I use run, MSCONFIG, and bring up system config utility, I have it on selective startup. It shows Process System.ini.file and it is checked...Process Win.ini.file and it is checked...Load system services has a green highlighted box next to it...Load startup items with a green box...and Use original Boot.ini is checked with a green dot.
Are all of these supposed to be checked and highlighted like this? I've noticed some greater than usual memory usage and cannot remember if these are all supposed to be checked.
Any help or comments appreciated.
Thank you, Tom.

A:System Configuration Utility Question

Hi Ohfer,
Yes that is supposed to be check once you edit/disable/enable something in the startup it will be changed to selective startup. That is normal, the only difference I have is Load system services is checked for mine and yours is higlighted. I don't think it makes a big diffrence though.

I have the following startup item that when I uncheck it, it will check itself back on when I restart.

Start up item: ctfmon
Command: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
Location: HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

Like I said, I can uncheck it and then it will be mysteriously checked when I reboot the computer. I was wondering if this is a potential problem (trogan) and how I can investigate this.

It isn't a trojan. This article explains what it is and how to disable it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ctfmon

I am trying to remove Norton Antivirus 2005 from Windows XP, but can not remove it from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs option. The instructions I received from Norton recommends that I begin at Start, Run, enter "msconfig" and then proceed through the Systems Configuration Utility window by making sure that "ccApp" is checked. My problem is that I can't get the SCU window to stay open when I enter msconfig into the Run box. It only appears for a brief second.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:System Configuration Utility

Hi clw and welcome to BC

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

Suggest you post a log in the HiJack This forum on this site after folllowing the instructions about posting a HiJack log at the top of the forum.

If I check the box will the changes be accepted? Will this message appear every time I start?

A:Using XP System Configuration Utility

The changes have already been made. This is just a warning. As the label on the checkbox says, if checked it will not appear on next startup.

Hi,
The below message keeps showing up every time I start my computer. I checked to make sure the utility is set to normal mode, which it is, however it keep showing up.
"You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

The system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts.

Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changed made using the system configuration utility.

(box to tick) Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows start."
I booted in safe mode and used hijackthis to delete the below line, however once I reboot in normal mode it does not show, however the next time I start my pc it comes back.

I click restart and the computer reboots. On my desktop comes a window about the System Configuration Utility and how some things have changed. A large section of the window is missing, so that the extreme bottom end of the window is a checkable box that says "Do not show this message again" which I select. However, this System Configuration Utility window pops up every time I boot up my computer. But when I put the computer back in normal mode, the window doesn't pop up on reboots. What's going on?

A:System configuration utility help.

I believe you can't run this utility unless you are the ADMIN. Make USER accounts for the kids. They can't access MSCONFIG. But then, if they know the process name of the program, then Ctrl+Alt+Del may allow them to end it anyway. Might be a 3rd party software that can do what you want.

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.

I just (today) overcame this...I'm not sure at all how it happened or what may have caused it, so I can't really be of much help.

My situation started a couple of days ago when I suddenly had these messages at startup which referred to files which could not be found. I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Box: Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start.
OK
I checked the box for the "Don't show this message" then clicked OK. Then I opened the System Configuration Utility and on the General tab marked the Normal Startup button, clicked on Apply the closed the utility. Now a box comes up to restart which I do. But when Windows restarts, I get the same System Configuration Utility window.
Anybody know how I fix this?

Once you have used Msconfig to UNselect programs that start at boot time, you will continually be now running in Selective Startup mode.
Selecting Normal will re-select all the UNselected apps.

The first time you UNselect and reboot you will get the window you mention.
Select the option "don't show again" and it should not appear on the next boot.

I have a COMPAQ laptop,Windows XP Home Edition
Each time I start up my computer, the following message shows up:

"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the general tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility."

I have already checked the "Normal Startup" box but after restarting, the message pops up again.
I can't even connect to the internet, and my anti-virus doesn't detect anything bad. HELP PLEASE!!

Hi! I was trying to get rid of the sprtcmd.exe problem first by using msconf as suggested by someone. I then got rid of that problem by following another method found on the forum. But every time I boot up, I get the system config utility telling me that I have to start up in normal fashion and with enough clicking I get rid of it. But how do I stop making it come up to begin with? Thanks so much.

I have decided to spend some time trying to reduce my processes in my task manager. I am up to 66 on with WIN 64XP Pro and it's taking a long time to finish booting.

As I started this process, I checked out my System Configuration Utility and found an odd item in the startup list.

It's listed simply as a startup item called cQE with a command listed only as cQE also. The location of it is as follows.

SOFTWARE\wow6432Node\microsoft\windows\currentversion\Run

When I go to my registry, I can find that series under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but cQE isn't found in Run. I can't find that series anywhere else in the registry but I may not know where to look.

Can someone tell me if this item is dangerous and if so, how to remove it?
Thanks

A:Mysterious cQE in System Configuration Utility

Is it still enabled?

You'll have to find out what it is before you can decide whether to keep it. Where is the program located?

Check a startup manager (I like Startup CPL):

Ashampoo Startup Tuner
Startup Control Panel
MZ Startup Manager
Startup Control Panel (Exe version for Vista)
Emsa Startup Manager
EM Startup Manager
WheresJames Startup Manager

Startup Programs Reference
Startup Database (bleepingcomputer)

If all else fails, you can see all your startups with Autoruns.

Do you have a Gigabyte board? If you do, and this exists: C:\Program Files\GIGABYTE\GEST\GSvr.exe, then it is a power-management utility.

There are also Trojans with that name, and a rootkit could have an entry in that registry location that is invisible to you.

ok so i go into startup and uncheck the programs i dont want to use in startup and it changes options in the general tab from normal startup to selective start up which than opens up different options... i dont no wat one s to check these options include: process system.ini file, process win.ini file, load system services, and load startup items... i have the option to check all or none of them but i dont no what any of these mean

A:What options do i want for system configuration utility

DO NOT use msconfig to manage startup options. And don't uncheck anything you don't understand. Download and use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to manage startup items. It will not let you remove anything that will cause problems.

The System Configuration Utility is on automatic prompt when I start up my computer.

I made changes to my services and start ups.

I checked the box to accept the changes and stop the System Configuration Utility from poping up on start up but it continues.

How do I stop it.

A:[SOLVED] System Configuration Utility

Download & save SysInternals AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet -

http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe, "Run as Administrator"

Look through list for msconfig.exe. Un-check box if found.

Backup your registry first via creation of a System Restore point -
START | type rstrui
