Files in a folder get deleted when extracted

Q: Files in a folder get deleted when extracted

I don't know if other people had this problem but I have a folder that I need to extract but apparently when I extract it to desktop, I click on the folder and noticed some files were missing. I check the unextracted folder and all the files were fine.
I realized when I extract the folder to desktop, the files aren't actually deleting because they seem to be there in the unextracted folder but not there when I extract them.
the next thing I tried is extracting one file that gets deleted from that folder into the desktop and then nothing happens. So the main thing is that the files wont extract to the desktop for a weird reason. I use McAfee anti virus and I tried disabling
everything possible from it and extracted the file. But it didn't work; also i'm running Windows 10.
All I know is that this is probably not from my antivirus and it has to do something with the file not being extracted.

Please help me fix this problem ASAP as the internet has no good answers or no answers at all.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I accidentally deleted my RECIPE FOLDER containing several categories of recipes with several files in each folder. I could not find my deleted files in MY Recycle Bin so I recovered my RECIPE FOLDER by restoring my system to an earlier date. Now that I have recovered My RECIPE FOLDER, all my files are now script and cannot be read. These are recipes that I have been collecting for over 8 years. It's a treasure to me. How do I return these script files to normal. My folder was stored on an HP Pavilion Laptop using Windows 7.

So I installed Windows 7 RC 7100 from a dvd with Vista present, choosing what I assumed was the clean install option. The installation rounded up the old windows and put it in a folder called windows.old. I got what I needed out of there, and deleted the windows.old folder and stuff got deleted, except the windows.old folder and some remaining sub-folders. There are two files way down in the last folder that won't be deleted. Windows 7 claims they are not there, so they cannot be renamed and cannot be compressed. Plus they have 0 bytes. These files are labeled in what looks like real Coptic script. These files can be moved and the folders that contain them too. Windows 7 will not delete them, saying that they are not where they are anymore.

I figure that when I deleted the windows.old folder, something went wrong and now Windows 7 shows them to be there, but also thinks they are not there - weird that it has enough to think they are there but not enough to think it can delete them.

Anyway, how can I get rid of whatever is there?

A:Folder and its files can't be deleted.

I don't think there is anything you can do to get rid of them besides a format. I've had something like that for over a year on one of my disks that is 400 GB full and I have no place to move the stuff temp away to fix it. I tried a little looking for ways, like software or commands, but nothing deleted the files.

Here's mine.

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

Hello! I'm not anything near a computer expert, so sorry for the non-technical explanation:

I was having some problems with my desktop -- multiple duplicate folders were somehow created (green folders and yellow folders) and, for example, if I'd click to download a file to the desktop, it would not end up on the desktop itself but in one of these other folders. Anyhow, I deleted one of the green duplicate folders, but that ended up deleting everything -all the files on the desktop and in the desktop folders. So I clicked "Undo Delete" but the files did not reappear. I also checked the recycle bin but the Desktop folder and files therein that I had deleted were not there.

I tried typing in "shell:desktop" and restarting, but that didn't help.

However, if I click "Search," the files that were lost show up! But if I click on a file to open it, it will not open. So, for example, if I click on an MSWord file, I get the message:

The document or path name is not valid.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the path to make sure it was correctly typed.
* On the File menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog box.
The files say they are located in the folder Desktop (C:\Users\Amy\Desktop\Desktop) or some other name of a folder I had on the desktop.

However, if I plug this path (C:\Users\Amy\Desktop\Desktop) into the little box at the bottom of the Start Menu, what comes up is my current desktop, not the desktop fil... Read more

What was the extension of the compressed file and what types of files did it contain?

But it really isn't about the program doing the compressing but the data that is being compressed. Some types of files, such as many image files, are already compressed and any attempts at further compression will accomplish little if anything. Some file types, such as text files and some others, compress very well.

I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.

Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted:

while files with these filenames should be extracted:

Abcd thumbs.db.txt

In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described?

Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need?

The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

A:Setting WinRAR to exclude specified files from being extracted

Yes, it should work.

Here is a piece from WinRar 4.0 Help file

Files to exclude
File masks and file names to exclude from the archiving operation. Wildcards are supported both in path and name parts of masks. If you need to specify several masks, separate them by spaces. If mask contains spaces, enclose it in quotes. For example, you may enter:

c:\temp\info.txt *.bak *.tmp *\temp\

to skip c:\temp\info.txt file, all .bak and .tmp files, all temp folders and all files in temp folders. You may enter file names manually or use "Append" button to browse for file to exclude.

Detailed information about exclusion masks syntax is provided in description of switch -x. This switch uses the same format of exclusion masks as "Files to exclude" field.

Hi All

ive spend a LONG time seaching the net trying to find a solution to this odd problem which im surprised can and did actually happen.

Basically i had the My Documents folder as a sharing file on my old network. After joining a new network when i moved i tried to remove the folder from My Sharing folder but seem to have deleted the actual My Documents folder and all the files contained within it.

As such all my photos and files are now removed/deleted or misplaced the within windows XP. My hard drive is still showing as having the same amount of free space as it did prior to me deleting my documents so im thinking that perhaps the files that were previously within my documents folder have been lost or moved somewhere? ive checked obvious places like Recycle Bin but cant locate them anywhere even via the Search function for all files.

FYI There is one account on the laptop which is password protected that i use to log in, its an admin account so should have full access to everything.

When i go in trying to locate the folder from My computer as per the below this is the message i get. Its the same from every shortcut to My Documents too.

'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents is not accessible

ive run Chkdsk and tried a number of other things but would really appreciate any suggestions as im now on the verge of accepting that ive lost all my photos (2 most recent sets werent backed up - im stupid i know!) and need to do a fresh insta... Read more

Hi all:

I have a bit of an unusual issue. I am trying to prevent Win 7 from deleting files from the temp folder (C:\Users\<NAME>\AppData\Local\Temp) when I close a program (in my case Firefox). I believe it is the OS, and not the program or my AV, which is deleting the files, though if folks think otherwise please let me know. Does anyone have suggestions on options to change to prevent files from being expunged from my \temp directory?

Here are the specifics:
I am trying to prevent Firefox from deleting files which I download using the Download Manager using the "open with" (rather than "save as") option.

These files remain in my folder, C:\Users\<NAME>\AppData\Local\Temp until after I close Firefox at which point they are deleted. Note: I am sure it is Windows which is deleting the files since:
* I have disabled my antivirus and related programs (Malwarebytes real time protection)
* I can see the file disappear from the \Temp folder a few seconds after Firefox is closed down
* when I terminate the Firefox process via the task manager the file deletion does not occur
Some other comments:
* I do not believe this is influenced by the Tools>Options>Privacy settings in Firefox, but I have set it to "Use Custom Settings for History" and unchecked "Clear History when Firefox Closes"
* I have experimented with various settings in Firefox's about:config (privacy.clearOnShutdown.* options are ... Read more

A:temp folder: do not files deleted when exit program

Actually, I think everything points toward Firefox deleting the temp files, not Windows. In any case this behavior is by design, since Firefox downloads your files in order to open them with something and you're not just saving them.
So my question is...why don't you just save the files instead of using "open with"? If for some reason you can't or don't want to, you could simply move the desired files out of your temp folder before closing Firefox...

I ran into an issue with a user's computer. Initially, he was experiencing problems with the computer running slow. A previous technician diagnosed the issue and decided to run Combofix to clear any issues that might be causing this. However, in running Combofix, the files in the folder C:/windows/csc folder/d6 or %systemroot%/csc folder/d6 were treated as malware and moved to C:/Qoobox/Quarantine/C/Windows/csc folder/d6 and renamed with the extension .vir. In doing so, the user has lost some of his data. Although the data represents files on a share drive on a server, in syncing the share drive's files in order to make them available offline, some of those files were lost. Well, at least that's how it seems as the user's files seemed to have disappeared around the same time Combofix was run.

We've tried a system restore to the day BEFORE Combofix was run to no avail. We've also tried to use batch file renaming programs as we made copies of the files in the Quarantine in order to get them out of quarantine and rename them without the .vir extension, put them back in their original folder and resync, but that did not work. The Windows resynchronization process reports that some of the files can't be restored because the user is not connected to the server, even though he is. Nonetheless, after that attempt, the files that were missing are still missing.

The files themselves vary from Excel spreadsheets to Word documents. The scan was perfo... Read more

Hi there,
Usually any computer problems I can fix myself but this one has me stumped. The virus scanner I am using is Avast and the firewall I'm using is Windows Firewall. My operating system is XP Service Pack 3. Yesterday with breakfast I clicked into my "Downloaded" folder on my external hard drive to find the folder was empty except for a file called "myfile.exe." Where this has come from and how it was not picked up or recognised as a virus is unknown. I used these forums to try and solve the problem trying everything from "unhide.exe" to the recommended malware programs and followed pretty much every procedure but to no avail. The space from the files has still be taken up on the harddrive and show hidden files is checked etc. It only seems to be that folder that has been effected. The contents of the folder itself are all video files, tv shows and movies. If anyone can help it will be much appreciated!

Hello. Last year I installed one utility called Wrye Bash used to manage and install mods for the game Oblivion. This particular utility is distributed as a .zip archive, it has no installer. The installation instructions tell to simply extract the archive to the same installation folder where the game was installed. This archive contains folders and subfolders within it. Since July last year, I haven't used or updated Wrye Bash, and 75 new versions were released! Now I'd like to uninstall it first before installing the new version. Uninstalling wouldn't be necessary if the files to be extracted from the new archive overwrote all the files extracted earlier from the old version archive, but this doesn't happen for all the files: some of them are not overwritten. This brings me to this forum.

I'd like to know if there's any way to automatically uninstall (delete) all the files extracted from an archive. There must be a simple way to achieve this I'm not aware of. The hard way would be in Windows explorer to select each and every file in the destination directory which was extracted there from the archive, and then delete them. Is there any easier way to do this? Basically, I wish to know if there's any way to undo the extracting procedure, by automatically removing the files which were extracted to the destination directory.

I was hoping that converting the original .zip archive to a SFX archive with WinRar, I could then use this .exe SFX archive both to install (extract... Read more

In trying to removed the Deleted Items folder the sub-folder went with it. There were a large number of messages I had received via e-mail that I intended to keep.

Hi, Could someone please tell me why my deleted messages are deleted from the computer instead of going to my Deleted Items Folder? I "do not" have the box checked from Menus - Options - Advanced - Maintenance - Empty messages from the "Deleted Items" folder on exit. Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Ray

User came in with a receiving email issue and to make a long story short I found that his inbox and all subfolders including sent, junk ect. are subfolders of the trash folder.(deleted Items) I tried to back up, clean(glary utils) and reinstall but the backup reordered the folders the way they were. I will uninstall again and hand build the folders and subs if need be but I was hoping someone here might know a fix before I spend 2 or more hours creating and moving from imported folders (home based company with 33000+ emails)

Any ideas appreciated.

Also noteworthy is that Norton failed after the hearbleed patch and had to be completely removed and reinstalled. the reinstallation of Norton was AFTER trying to repair Outlook.

How do I access folder made private after user account that made the folder private is deleted.

I was foolin around with the registry yesterday and forgot to back it up. XP crashed when I restarted. I used the restore disk that came with the computer. All files that I put on the computer where left alone, but all XP files were reverted to factory Files. I had My Documents set as a private folder. The folder still appears under Documents and settings but I cannot access it.....HELP...Thanks in advance.

I need serious help. Something is deleting every file I attempt to download. I get the same message... " (file name) contained a virus and was deleted" enclosed in a box which also includes a red colored shield with a white "x" inside. It does not discriminate...even Microsoft files are deleted rather than saved. It occurs even in "safe" mode.

Please also note that for some reason, I am unable to access your web site except while in "safe" mode.
