Blank black screen with blinking cursor at top left corner

Q: Blank black screen with blinking cursor at top left corner

Hello , my computer won't start up to windows . I do not have the cd to restore my computer . I have a compaq windows xp computer . I believe it has to do something with a program called norton ghost that I was running , it froze so I restarted the computer and I chose to start windows normally . The blank screen then came up with the blinking cursor on the top left corner . Is there any possible way I can fix this problem myself ?

Preferred Solution: Blank black screen with blinking cursor at top left corner

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Norton Ghost is a Clone/Imaging software to clone your existing HDD to a different HDD. What exactly were you trying to do?

Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. Disk Check Outside Windows (Windows XP) The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools, or DriveFitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

Hi, suggests it's not seeing your disk at all - nothing to boot from.

Check your connections, check your disk - e.g. using a live boot disk or connect it to another PC.

If you can manage to read it again, run chkdsk on it.

Hey guys I have a Song Vaio RBG-53 (I believe) with XP. I was using google images when I clicked on a picture and got a fake anti virus pop up. It wasn't the normal one I've seen quite a few times so I alt f4 closed it and immediately ran my AVG virus scan. That found nothing so I ran Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files. Two were in the registry and two were in my temporary internet files...I believe. Then I had it remove them and it said I needed to reboot to safely remove the files. I did that and when the computer started back up, it showed the initial Sony Vaio screen and then it goes straight into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. The fan in my computer will run pretty loudly for about a minute and then slow back downto normal. At this point I'm not able to do anything. None of the F keys do anything. I tried ctrl alt del and that has no effect either. I can't get into safe mode or recovery console or anything like that. I've been researching google for the last hour on this and all the fixes involve just going into safe mode or using a repair cd, which I do not have. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi guys,

The other day I was using my old desktop and using firefox when suddenly firefox froze up while browsing and I was unable to ctrl+alt+del or click start or anything for that matter in order to close it down. I then turned off my computer manually by pressing the power button as I sometimes do when my computer freezes and turned it back on. Unfortunately, when I turned it back on the computer is stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore in the top left hand corner.

I unfortunately am not good with computers and would like to avoid reformatting my computer, as this old desktop contains the largest amount of my media such as music and movies that I had been meaning to put onto an external hard drive. Furthermore, I do not have an XP installation disc and am unable to locate the system recovery discs that came with the PC (like I said, it's old, circa 2006, and they are most likely lost somewhere in the house or thrown out by now). Thank you for all the help and support in advance.

A:Windows XP black screen with blinking underscore in top left hand corner

if you haven't tried, as you switch on press the F8 key up and down repeatedly, if this works you will be at the safe mode menu - try last known good config. If still no go, try booting to BIOS - if this doesn't work I would say hard drive issue. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program, this has to be burned to a disk. Then put the disk in and let it boot the pc and run the test.

Is there any possible way to recover my files, pics, etc. or is it just gone now? I'm really upset because I had five years of photos of my grandchildren. =(

Look at your BIOS settings. The Acer screen may tell you how to access the BIOS (boot) settings with a function key - probably F2. Press that F2 or whatever it tells you when the Acer screen comes up. When the BIOS screen displays, make sure the "boot from" setting is your hard disk. If not, change it.

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

Hello, members of TechSpot this is my first post rather a urgent first post. (I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.)
- My dell Model : Inspiron Model P07F.

My Stated Problem : My computer was getting really slow so, I decided to restore my computer to it's factory state. As I did that I got too impatient and shut the computer off right at 30% while I regret it after I attempt to turn on the computer. I get the dell logo with F2 and F12 at the bottom of the screen (No Problem at all) but, at I get into further I only get a blinking underscore/cursor. And it seems like forever and I keep restarting and the same problems keep going on and on. Can someone please help me?

A:Blank/black screen with blinking cursor/underscore!

The same thing happened to my laptop not too long ago.

Did you by any chance create a system repair disc? I would try that. If you do not have a repair disk, then you can use your Windows installation disc to restore your system. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you have either one of these.

If you do not have either, you can try creating a new account. But this should only be a last ditch effort, in my opinion. I still prefer repairing with the disk.

Shut down your laptop. Reboot until you get to the Dell logo where its says "Press F2..." Once there, press Ctrl + F11 simultaneously, and then release both at the same time. This should prompt a Restore Options screen. Follow the directions and wait for the loading bar to finish. You should be able to create a new account after that.

Please note that I'm not certain the second option will work, but a friend has told me it did for his Dell. Good luck.

Hi everyone,

I need your help/suggestions on this one before I do any harm to the system.

The problem is my DELL E310 will not boot to Windows XP. It got as far as the DELL Logo and then it comes to a blank black screen with blinking cursor on the upper left corner.

At the DELL Logo, I can F2/F12 to change the boot sequence and boot to Windows XP pre-SP1 Install CD. I have tried going into the Windows Recovery Console. Typing "dir" gets a "An error occurred during directory enumeration" for C:drive. Typing "chkdsk" gets a "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."

What was I doing before the blinking cursor...? I was trying to set up dual-boot configuration with addition of a 2nd SATA hard drive. Before attempt to install XP on new drive, a quick check in Control Panel | Computer Management | Disk Management confirmed that Windows was seeing the new drive:
Disk 0 (existing C:drive) 144.33 Gb NTFS, 39 Mb FAT and 4.64 Gb FAT32.
Disk 1 (new drive) unallocated.

I tried to install Windows XP to the new F:drive (after creating the partition), but the installer wants to install to C:drive instead. On the installer set up menu, it reports Cartition [unknown] 132 Gb.

A:Blinking cursor on blank black screen, Windows XP

Use your windows install cd and get back into the Recovery console, instead of chkdsk, run the FixMBR and Fixboot commands. In all instances that i've encountered the "blinking curser", it's been a corrupt or modified MBR record.

Hello Bleepers!

Wow! It's been a long time since i have needed your support. Firstly, Happy New Year to all! Secondly...Oh do I need your help.... desperately!

I was online earlier today, and all of sudden i noticed my computer started to run slower. Then i saw a yellow triangle with exclamation appear in the system tray (bottom right). Since i have seen malware and spyware before i was immediately alerted and had a bad feeling. I closed internet explorer and noticed two files on my desktop, one looked like a folder and the other a strange file. I never put them there (obv). Something malicious must have intruded my system while i was surfing. Malware Pop Ups began almost instantly . Since i was worried i didnt wait to see what they were pretending to offer, or be. It appeared similar to most scanner spyware. I shut down my pc right after malwarebytes would not load. It stated some sort of hard drive error, which i assumed was fake. Upon rebooting, I was unable to load windows. I had previously installed the recovery console which i was able to access. I did a little reading and loaded the recovery console. I read that running "chkdsk /r" might solve the problem. Well it found some errors after a lenghty check, and said it fixed them. I then rebooted. Now all i get is the blink cursor in the top left corner, immediately following the dell splash screen. I am only able to get F2, and F12 to work. The bios does recognize the hard drive. PLEASE HE... I have a blue screen problem. Don't know if I should post it here or not but here is my problem.

I have windows 8. I updated to 8.1. So far so good. That is until this morning. I don't know if this is in fact a Windows 8.1 issue or if anyone has ever experienced this before. I turned on the computer. I got the 'Hi' message followed by the next message of windows getting my apps updated. I then had a blank blue screen with a 'start' in the top left hand corner and an arrow in a box pointing to the next page. On the next page I had APPS on the top left hand corner and a blank box. I typed in 'desk top' even tho' that is not an 'app' as such. It took me to a blank black page with a bin in the top left hand corner. It looked liked my machine had been completely wiped. This has never happened before and I tried to Google it but the answers given did not have any correlation to what happened to me...any clues anyone?" Sorry guys, I just reread my post....I forgot to say that my computer has been functioning as normal all day .. What I did was to turn it off and back on again and it worked as normal. The thing is, I don't now trust it and want to know what? why and is it something I need to address.

I have seen this problem once before [posted in a different forum on this site] but it was a problem someone had on a laptop and it was for Windows XP.

I am using a desktop PC [Windows 7- HP] in a nutshell.

Anywho...The Problem.
I was minding my own business, listening to music and editing on a photoshop program, when suddenly my computer shut off on me. So, thinking that I might have accidentally pressed the power button with my leg, I restart it. Only to get a black screen with a little white flashing line at the top left corner of my screen.

I've heard people say to try to load it in Safe Mode. But I honestly don't know how to do that with Window's 7. I'm at a bit of a loss really. I've tried numerous things. I'm close to giving up...and so I'd really really REALLY appreciate any help given. I have a lot of files and etc...on this thing, and I really don't want to hear that there's nothing that can be done to retrieve them! :(

It's not booting to your Hard Drive. You can set the boot order in your BIOS. It is either F1, F2. Delete, F5, sometimes F10. HP usually uses F10, try that first.

Then set your boot order as follows:

CD/DVD first, Hard Drive second, then it does not matter after that.

Also, in your BIOS you will be able to see if your Hard Drive is being detected, if not, try unplugging the power and Data cables and plugging them back in, HP's are notorious for dropping the Hard Drive, you have to buy new SATA cables constantly. You may need to do this.

My computer is about a year old now, built by me and my dad. Recently it's been having some issues though-- for a while I think it was over heating, causing it to reboot. At least I hope it was just overheating. One time when I booted up my computer it told me overclocking failed, which was odd because I hadn't messed with any of the settings (all still defaults).

But heres the major issue: If you boot it up, after the BIOS it'll give you a black screen with a blinking underscore up in the left corner. If you're quick enough you can get it to go into safe mode, etc. You can also choose which drive to boot from--- I found that it only gives you the black screen with certain drives. But, I did notice that its very slow when you have the "loading" screen for windows-- it'll slowly fade in and start loading, then it goes to a normal speed.

First backup any files you want off of the computer with an Ubuntu Live CD saving to an external USB HDD/Flash Drive.
If you have a Windows 7 DVD or Restore CD put that in the computer and choose your language and then Restore Your Computer.
If you do not have a disc, then you probably have a restore partition. Restart the computer on the logo screen when you see the message Press (Key) to Enter E-Recovery do so, this will restore your computer to Factory Defaults. Be sure to backup first.

I restarted my computer, tried to get in again, loaded a little while longer, crashed to desktop. I noticed that when I was on the main screen, it was kind of flickering...so I thought it might be something with my graphics card.

Tried to download and reinstall the driver, it gave me an error (don't remember what it said). I tried to research this on Firefox, and it eventually crashed and I believe it gave me some kind of memory error. Anyways...I decided to reformat and reinstall Windows 7. I'm beginning to think this lies outside of a software issue. While watching a racing video the other day, everything on the screen got HUGE and froze the computer. Thereafter it wouldn't boot XP. I got it to now boot into XP and I can login by deleting the display adapter. However, after I've been in Windows for 30 seconds or so it goes to a blank black screen with a blinking cursor. No keyboard or mouse commands work. The CDROM still opens.

What are some likely scenarios? This is on a Dell Dimension 8250. It has old RDRAM in it. I tried taking a stick out to test it but the computer just started beeping without it. There are 4 sticks. I'd rather it be the video card than the RAM if anything at all hardware related.

I have a Presario laptop windows vista home. I opened an e mail I thought was from my daughter; clicked on a link and to make a long story short after clearing windows ok and run, my screen went blank with a cursor blinking in upper left corner.

Tried rebooting in safe mode and will not allow. Just ran Primary Hard Disk self test in Bios setup utility and got a test status #2- 07 Fail..

A:screen blank with blinking cursor

Here is the link I clicked that caused the screen to go blank on minus me2u.exe so it won't work. Anyone heard of this link?

This is a Compaq Presario SR5130NX, AMD Athlon 64, 1024 M RAM. Running Vista Home Premium. Was working fine a week ago. My niece took it to college and said it started “acting up”, then it wouldn’t start up at all.
When I took a look at it I found that it now boots to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner.
Things I have tried so far:
Open case, checked cable connections. Unplugged and reseated hard drive power and SATA cables.
Tried booting into Safe Mode, same thing happens (blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner).
Booted from Vista DVD (I only have a Vista 32 bit DVD, so I don’t know if these tests are valid or not, since this is a 64 bit edition of Vista).
Tried startup repair. It said that no problems were found.
Tried system restore, and it said that there were no restore points (which is pretty weird, I’m pretty sure that when I looked at this computer last week I created a restore point).
I checked the BIOS and it is recognizing the hard drive, although it list the hard drive as the 3rd drive, and the dvd rom as the 4th dirve (the first and second drives say “None”.).
I verified that the boot order in the BIOS is correct.
Not sure what could be going on. I don’t believe that any new hardware or software has been installed, but who knows.
Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.

A:Blank Screen with Blinking Cursor

I have found a partial solution. I went to HP’s website and found that Recovery Console Command Prompt commands are available in Vista.
I booted from the Vista dvd, system repair, command prompt, and ran the following:
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
and the system booted up to a Windows update screen that said “Configuring update 3 of 3”. I suspected that this may have had something to do with recent Windows Updates, as I found references to this problem when Googling. I suspect perhaps the system was shutdown during the update?
Anyways I thought I was home free. The login screen came up, I logged on, much to my dismay the system hung for a minute or two at the Welcome screen, then faded to a black screen with only the mouse pointer showing. Strangely enough Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up the screen with “Switch User, Task Manager, Log Off, etc”, but the normal desktop is just black. I cannot get to Task Manager. I can however boot in Safe Mode. No Restore Points are available. I uninstalled the 3 most recent MS updates, no change. I downloaded the latest video driver from NVIDIA’s website, no difference. Last known Good doesn’t work either. At this point I’m at a loss other that trying a complete System Recovery. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated.
Since this is a somewhat different problem, perhaps I should start a new thread?

When I try to start up my machine, the Dell boot screen with the F2 and F12 options appear, but instead of moving on to the Windows XP loading screen, it simply shows a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left. I cannot type anything with this cursor. There is clearly something wrong with the boot procedure or, I think, with my hard drive. The hard drive (160gb) is new and has been working well since February.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. I've run Diagnostics with no errors, booted from XP CD to try bootcfg /rebuild, fixboot & fixmbr, and the lengthy chkdsk /r, all to no avail. I've even tried replacing two NTLDR files by copying them from the XP CD. Nothing has worked; I still have a black screen with a flashing cursor when my HDD should be loading. I've tried removing and reinserting the HDD itself, also to no avail. I haven't yet opened the case up to try to see if there's anything to clean or any botched connections, but I don't see how something like that would have happened on its own. All of my components (RAM, HDD, Video Card, Processor, etc.) seem to be recognized in the BIOS menu.

I should note that when I run chkdsk /r, the progress quickly gets to 25%, slows down and takes a while to get to 51%, and then slows down even more and takes maybe two or three hours to complete. I also notice that the progress advances to about 65% sometimes and then returns to 50% again. I've run chkdsk several times now... Read more

hello all
i have a dell computer which was working fine before i reinstalled the windows and now it doesn't boot up. it keep on giving me blank screen with blinking typing cursor right after bios. i am able to get into bios.

now..i am fully positive that the hard drive is not defective and the window's are installed properly, because i used the same hard drive in my ibm laptop and it worked fine.

one thing i should let you know is that, i installed the windows on my ibm computer and then installed the hard drive in my dell computer which is not booting.

could the reason for the dell computer to not be booting my hard drive BE cuz i installed the hard drive on an ibm computer?

on the side note also one of my question is that CAN I SWAP HARD DRIVES FROM IBM laptop to DELL laptop.?

the hard drive was installed on ibm, and works fine on ibm but it doesn't boot up on dell and instead gives me blank screen with blinking typing cursor?!?

sorry if i am confusing you guyz, please ask me for any details if i seem to have confused you!

also if some of you are wondering that why i didn't directly instal the operating system on the hard drive in dell computer, <<well the answer to that is that, my dell optical cd drive doesn't work so i decided to install it on ibm and take it into dell.

thanks in advance.

I am posting this reques tfor help only after scouring the internet for help and suggestions, but nothing I have tried has helped so far.

Lats night I shutdown my DELL notebook as a colleague came over to chat. Without thinking, I then closed the lid of the notebook while the shutdwon was still in progress. I immediately realised what I had done but figured it was too late to simply reopen the lid so I let the process finish until all the lights went out.

Today the startup was normal, but when I tried the first process (to open Googe's Chrome) I got error message regarding unreadble file or similar .. so then I remembered wha thappened last night so I decided to shutdown properly and fully and reboot.

The reboot now doesn't work. Instead I see the DEll logo display but then just a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I think it doesn't even get to start loading Windows.

My only options are F2 (BIOS Setup) and F12 (Boot menu) plus CTRL, ALT + DEL will reboot with the same result .. back to the blank screen

1. F8 for a safe mode reboot ... doesn't work ... not result

2. F2 to check BIOS ... these things are beyond me, but I did check the boot device sequence on the basis of one post I saw and it seems ok with HDD as the first in the sequence

3. I created an Emergency Windows Boot disk, and then boot using this .. then select Repair Computer .. but instead of going to the repair menu I geta message saying "... Read more

Hi Robert -

How did you create the disc?

See if Dell Recovery Partition works. Try CRTL+F11 keys during boot-up.

Also, F8 - http://support.dell.com/support/topi...774-ed5qnzk7xx

HDD may have failed.

Run HDD diagnostics - http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

I cannot boot from CD or USB drive. Always get the blank screen with a blinking cursor _ on the top left corner. It will boot from the CD fine if I remove the hard drive. But if the hard drive is in, then the same problem happens. What happened:  Earlier, when I first got the laptop, I removed the hidden partition and changed the partitions' size. (C: for Vista & D: for storage).Yesterday, I shrunk the D: partition, and created another partition to install XP (dual boot)Then I used VistaBootPro to get back the boot menu (to select either Vista or XP upon reboot)So everything was okay. I could boot to Vista and XP.I started to install drivers for my XP installation (Hotfix, Audio, Video, WiFi, LAN, etc.) after installing Windows updates (SP3)The problem started when I restarted after an installation (forgot which driver). All I got was a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Restarting gave the same result. When I plugged the hard drive into my desktop, it read fine, and could go to the boot menu (select Vista/XP), but of course, it didn't boot into either Vista or XPI copied all the data to the desktop. Then deleted all the partitions and re-created new partitions. The desktop can see the new partitions and everything is normal, so I don't think there is something wrong with the drive itself. But once the drive is plugged in the laptop, I cannot boot from CD drive anymore, so I cannot install XP/Vista.I can go to the BIOS and change the settings, but that's ab... Read more

A:Blank Screen with Blinking Cursor -- Can't Boot Anything

I'm having the same problem after attempting to install Ubuntu. I deleted both the non-Windows partitions and used that space for a Linux partition. Ubuntu installed (seemingly) fine, but when I rebooted, I was unable to boot from anything; not the hard drive, not the CD drive, and not from USB. Anybody figure out what can be done in this situation?

A:Holding X240 by bottom left hand corner causes screen to black out and flicker

Hi, I had this problem several times as well. First time it happened was I picked up my x240 (with lid open) from the corner to the left of the trackpad, and the screen flickered and crashed. The x240 crashed the same way when I was using the x240 on my lap, while resting my left elbow to the left of the trackpad, supporting my chin reading the a document on the screen. I think the crash happens when there's pressure to the area to the left of the trackpad. It would be great if anyone else could replicate the same problem, and hopefully somone can find a fix!
