Word 2007 Can't open encrypted docx from Word 2010

Q: Word 2007 Can't open encrypted docx from Word 2010

When I send some friends a password protected word document created in Word 2010 they can't open it using word 2007 which is compatible with docx by using the correct password. I have no choice but to send as a Word doc instead of docx so they can open it.

Word 2007 User 1: Word launches no password box no error messages just the blue screen.

Word 2007 User 2: Gets the error message: ?Word cannot open this file . The encryption type used is not available. Contact the author of the file. More encryption types are available in the High Encryption Pack.?

Therefore I suspect some kind of encryption pack must be installed. I believe the user 1 has XP and user 2 has Win 2000 pro. are using XP. Do you know where these encryption packs are available? The other possibility might be for me to reduce the encription level when I create a password protected docx but I have no idea how to do that.

Is there a solution to this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Chris,

I've been looking at this for a while, but cannot find an answer.

The only thing I can come up with, is an alternate suggestion, which I am sure you have probably thought of : use something like 7ZIP to encrypt the file, and then send that to your friends.

7ZIP

Hi all.

First off, I'll say I can open word fine from a shortcut or using the EXE file. But when I click on a DOCX file, I get a window that word is preparing to install, then it gathers information and configures itself; then I think it runs an installer (?). And then, finally, it opens my file. I can close and click on the same file right away and it goes through the whole process. Every time.

It's annoying and time consuming. I've tried a couple of online "fixes" including running this line:
reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1
and using Fix-It from Microsoft. No joy.

So I thought I'd best come here where I tend to trust y'all know what you're doing. And sometimes even what I'm doing!

As usual, I appreciate the help.

A:Word 2007 goes to install every time I open a docx file

Hi pretty weird :/
Have you also tried the uninstall a program option to fix all office programs ?
I rarely if ever use docx
They have features that are unneeded to me personally,

With a problematic file after it goes though all of the nonsense and opens,
Save the file as a compatible 2003 doc file and see if the issue remains with the new file.

Help, Somebody, I am trying to save a word 2007 file (tried both doc & docx) to pdf without it compressing the image/picture files. All of the image files, jpg and bmp, are 300 dpi/ppi in the word doc. But when I save it as a pdf file they turn out to be 72 dpi. How can I save it to pdf and retain the image resolution?

Hi all
Another problem with Word 2010.

SAME PRINTER - SAME DOCUMENT - SAME FONT

Prints with a sort of white line half way through and at the last 3 lines of each page the same thing happens -- it's like a line of text is split.

Printed with Office 2007 both on W7 and 2003 Server - no problems at all -- so I've eliminated printer driver problems.

I'm afraid I've had now to give up with Office 2010 Beta (I was using 64 bit version).

Not ready yet for prime time -- I think MS will need to release a "Pre RTM" or another test version to get all the bugs out of Office 2010 before it goes final.

Cheers

Hi,
Don't mind the curious ones, but I'm one of them. So anyway, almost one year ago now, the Word macro virus W97M/Marker.C was running rampant around Gordon College, with many teachers and students alike being infected. I was even infected with it thanks to one of my professors posting an assignment description document that had it. I was running AVG 9.0 at the time, and it was flagged many a time over. I think there were like six or so instances. My memory may be flaky, as my laptop has undergone many reformats since then, but what I do remember is trying to ignore AVG's warning, due to the fact that AVG has given me many false positives when I used it. The message Word gave me was that the document couldn't be opened because it wasn't available. But the strange part of that is that AVG had not removed anything from the file. I can think of two reasons why the file wouldn't run with the virus in it. Tell me which, if either, is correct. One is that Microsoft has since changed the macro format from 2003 and earlier versions of Word simply due to the many viruses that once existed for it, or two, that message was a very convoluted way of telling me that Windows 7 no longer supports Virtual device Drivers (*.vxd) as I was able to open the file after it had been cleaned up by Eset NOD32. Any knowledge you folks have would be very interesting, as I have always been curious about the very odd weekend of February 12, 2010. Now don't get me ... Read more

A:random curiosity about MS Word macro viruses and why (thank the Lord), they don't work in Word 2007/2010

I don't know the particulars of the macro virus you mention, but with Microsoft Office 2003, a significant change was implemented that effectively stopped the propagation of macro viruses.

Prior to Office 2003, macros were enabled by default, and opening a document with macros and auto-execute meant the macros were automatically executed (and thus the virus could infect and propagate).

With Office 2003, macro security was introduced. With a Microsoft Office 2003 default install, macros need to be signed with a certificate issued by a trusted root CA. Macros that are not signed will not be executed. Users have to explicitly lower the macro security level for unsigned macros to execute. Almost all macro viruses were unsigned.

Yesterday I bought a new laptop. Before I got rid of the old one, I backed up all my files. I was previously running office 2007 which uses .docx. This new laptop came with a key to be entered on the office website which would download and install Office Home and Student 2010. I copied all my old files onto this new laptop, however, I cannot set Word 2010 to be the default program to open .docx files. If i right click a .docx file and select 'Open with...' Word is not in the list of programs. If I browse, it is not in 'Program Files'. I am able to start Word from the start menu. I figured that if I do this, open the task manager, under applications right click on 'Document 1 - Microsoft Word' and select 'Go to process' it would show me the executable's title under the 'Processes' in the Task Manager, which it does (WINWORD.EXE). If I right click on this and select 'Properties' I get an error message

'Q:\140061.enu\Office14\WINWORD.EXE
The specified path does not exist.

Check the path, and try again.'

I understand that Office 2010 uses Click-to-Run technology and that Q:\ is a drive created by Click-to-Run and that I cannot access this drive.

So if I cannot access WINWORD.EXE, how can I make Word 2010 the default program to open .docx. I can open Word and then from there open a file, but I would much rather be able to click a file from it's directory and have it open in Word.

Hi

My grandfather got a new laptop with Windows 7 home premium x64 and I installed ms office 2007 professional on it.
Everything works but there is one little annoying problem, in the file explorer all .doc and .docx don't have their normal icons. First they just showed up as unknown files because they where not related to ms Word while all other files from Office looked totally normal. Then I fixed it that they would open with Word and they did and I could edit the files.
First the file icons where just blank but since I related the files with Word they got different icons but still not the normal ones.
The strange thing is that only the .doc and .docx files have the problem, all other normal files and all other Office files don't have this problem.

Please help me because my grandfather isn't allready that good with pc's and it is very annoying for him that he can't find his word files now because of the wrong icons.

edit: all other types of word files also do show their normal icons, it's just the .doc and .docx icons that are wrong.

Normally if a file isn't being opened with the proper program you could right click and go through the Open With... process, but even after choosing Winword.exe it still won't show up as a program to even choose as the default program. (I'm running Vista)a
Not to be redundant, but the former thread that addressed this problem suggested using CCleaner or editing the registry. Many of the posters reported registry fixes and very complicated methods that fixed the problem. I have used both options for other problems,... but running CCleaner to do a Registry clean solved the problem very quickly - and much safer than working within the registry. This program is a gem and I use it in my tech work all the time.

I am converting a large website of Microsoft Word files to TeX files and have written several useful Word macros to automate this process. When I converted from Word 2007 to Word 2010, the macros I wrote disappeared (a lot of supplied macros do appear). They don't appear even when I open a doc file where they have already been used in that file under Word 2007. It didn't occur to me to save the macros elsewhere, and apparently installing Word 2010 destroyed them.

Where can I find them?

Thanks

Because I do teaching for people who have both versions (2007 & 2010) of Word, I have to keep both on my computer. How do I get .doc and .docx to associate with Word 2010?

Because I work mostly in 2010, I want to default to opening with 2010 but I can't do it. When I do try to correct the association (through the Control Panel) it WON'T associate with 2010. I go to the winword.exe in the correct folder for 2010 and click on it but it just stays the same, still associated with winword.exe in the 2007 folder.

Having GREAT difficult with peculiar problem. Whenever i use the "paste special" feature to link a PPTx graph into my Word 2007 document, the graph appears with what seems to be 3 dimensional gridlines across it. These are not the gridlines set up by the data set, but rather, they apear as white lines across the colored sections of my graph. I cannot print it like this. We have tried many possible solutions -- including presets in Word, Axis settings in Powerpoint. It only happens when i link the two documents through "paste special," not if i just copy and paste.

Hello

I am unsuccessful in getting the association of .doc and .docx files with Word 2007.

I have tried two methods:
One using:
Settings > Control Panel > Default programs
Associate a file type or protocol with a program > Select .doc > Change Program
Select Microsoft Office Word > Click OK
The "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out.

Two using:
RT Click on a .doc or .docx file
Open with > Chose default program from context menu > select Microsoft Office Word
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". It is NOT grayed out
Click OK

The error on attempted open is "Windows can not find the file"
I can get them associated with Microsoft Works Word Processor but not with word 2007

This is similar to the solved problem that I posted on Jan. 27 in the software forum "Excel file won't open"
It was solved by Barman58!
Thanks

A:Associate .doc and .docx with Microsoft office word 2007.

Hi Frank,

Seems that these Office doc's attributes are really sent to try us

Not sure from your post if you have followed the exact procedure, in your first method, that worked with the XLS files? - rather than select the Microsoft Word option from the available programs list, browse to the winword.exe file which should be in the same area as the excel.exe file from previous.

If this does not help there is another method, in the control panel - uninstall programs - you should be able to right click on the Microsoft Office entry and select Change, then repair, which should fix this and any other issues

another option would be to select change, and without actually changing anything proceed through the procedure, (basically this would re-install office over the top of itself.
Sorry if these instructions are a little vague, I do not have access to a copy of either Vista or Office 2007 at the moment

Odd...but then the document does, in fact, open.

But the document that opens is in compatibility mode [Read only] mode. This is odd!!

Then, when I go to save as as Word 2007 document, I get this prompt:

This glitch or series of glitches does not occur when I open a Word document in an older version, only when I open a docx document.

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)

Every Office program works correctly except Word 2007. While it does recognizes Word 97-2003 documents, it will not recognize Word 2007 documents (docx) and it will not create them either.

Instead, they are displayed with the wrong icon -- not the Word Document icon (blue and white with the W on it), but as a white rectangle withlines across and DOCX on the bottom. I instructed the computer to open these files with Word, and it does open them. In fact, I can edit and save them. However, they save as the unrecognized DOCX files and not as a Microsoft Office Word file.

If I run Word and instruct it to save a New Microsoft Office Word document, it also saves them as the odd DOCX files and not as Microsoft Word Documents. Thus it seems like Word will not make Word files.

When I check the file properties by right clicking, it says this for the type of file: "DOCX File(.docx)." It also says that Microsoft Word opens these documents.

If I check the properties of a Word 97-2003 document, it says it isthis type of file: "Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 Document (.doc)."

When I discovered the problem I re-installed Office Ultimate 2007, butit did not fix the problem.

I created one of these DOCX files and emailed it to myself. Then I o... Read more

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

A:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.

Well i did a big report on my computer with Word Perfect i couldnt print it so i took to school on my flash drive. IN my first class i edited it on Word 2007 and in the class i could print it they had Word 2003 and i couldnt open my file and now i cant even open it in word perfect. I doubt i can use the laptops for a while anyway i can open this on wordperfect

A:Solved: Word Perfect- Word 2003 - word 2007

If you saved the file in the "new" Word 2007 format (with a file extension of .docx) then you will be unable to open it in the other applications.

For Word 2003 you can install a converter, but I know of no XLM converter for WordPerfect.

When using Word 2007 you need to "save as" Word 97-2003 format to retain backwards compatibility.

Are the following items true and if not, what is the correct procedure?

1. You cannot automatically format a number in a table as currency unless it is the answer in a formula. You can, however, type in the dollar sign by yourself.
2. The only way to do sums in a table is using the above, left, right, etc. layout (you cannot use regular cell references)
3. If 2 above is correct, that means you cannot do things like sum cells that are not directly above, below or to the direct right or left of where you want the total (ie: you cannot sit in what would be cell c2 in excel and add a1 +b1 and put the answer in c2).

Thanks for any information you can provide. I just want to check to make sure I am understanding the help file correctly.

Homework?

1. Mostly true, but not completely. After all, I could insert an Excel table.

2. False.

3. This one isn't a statement, really. But it still means 2 is false. If you insert a table and immediately create formulas in it like it's an Excel file, you CAN use cell references. It gets screwed up if you start inserting rows and/or merging cells, etc. That's why this never works for anyone.

Whenever I use Word (other apps and the desktop are fine) the mouse pointer constantly changes (every second or faster) its appearance. This occurs so quickly that I can barely make out the different components. It seems to rotate/cycle between the standard thick white arrowhead, an I-shaped cursor with four small adjacent horizontal lines, and a blue circle. I first noticed this while using Word 2007 so I upgraded to Word 2010 but the problem persists. My OS is Win7 Professional.

For weird things I usually shut the computer down, pull the power cord out [Desktop] or unplug the power cord and battery [Notebook], unplug any keyboard and mouse or wireless dongle, wait a minute or two and try again. If the keyboard and/or mouse are wireless I change the battery to known good or new ones.

Download Free Chemistry Add-in for Office Word 2010 and 2007.

Citing the need to support the ability of chemists to communicate in their discipline-specific language as essential to scientific research, Microsoft has made available for download a free add-in for the 2010 and 2007 flavors of Office Word. Dubbed informally Chem4Word, the add-in was developed by Microsoft Research and the Unilever Centre for Molecular Science Informatics at the University of Cambridge, and was released at the American Chemical Society?s Spring 2010 National Meeting & Exposition. Alex Wade, director for Scholarly Communication, Microsoft Research, explained that the Word extension was capable of supporting specific symbols across technologies and file formats, and streamlining authoring and semantic annotation.

I've just downloaded Student and Home Office 2010, and for some reason I now cannot open documnents that are Word 2007. I also cannot save work onto my memory stick, as for some reason, it saves the document as Word 2007, even though I am doing the work on Word 2010! (I only ever had a trial version of 2007, never the whole thing and it is no longer on my comp) I am starting a history course soon, and their online docs are 2007, and again, I can't open them. A message pops up saying that 'the file does not have a programme associated with it for perfoming this action' thats what pops up every time. Can someone tell me what on earth I need to do to rectify this? Thanks so much!!

Estella Welcome to SevenForums,

Right-click on one of the .DOC files
Choose Open with
Select Choose Default Program

Do you see Word in the resulting display?
Here is a snip of what I see.

If you don't then, using the browse button, navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Winword.exe

Hi,

Got a problem with Word and Excel 2007.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Other info:
Outlook 2007 works ok, no delays
Windows XP works ok
No speed issues with computer
Did not previously have Office 2003
Word/Excel documents are local, computer is not on a network
Computer is free from spyware and viruses

Couple of issues here.... help!

1) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word doc or excel and try to open it by a click (internet explorer) it opens of the window that comes with the computer to "buy" or ... so I have to save on the desk top, open word or excel then open the document through the software.

2) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word or excel document in (Chrome) it opens a little window which ask if I want to open, save or open/save and where to save it. If I press open another window opens and ask if I want to open it now.
How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

Thank you ahead of time!

Everytime i try to open up a saved word document, Word fails telling me that "Microssoft word has stopped working". It's ine when opening up new files but it can be annoying trying to open up a piece of work in progress.
When i try to re-open after it crashes, word tells me that it would be safe to open up in safe mode. This way i can gain access to some of my saved work. But it's a very round-a-bout way of getting to it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,

Could be that your machine is affected by some sort of virus, or maybe the MS Office has been corrupted. You can try to scan your system for viruses after updating the virus definitions and of no luck then you may try re-installing MS Office.

Cheers,

I just installed 2007 on my machine. At work I use the same program.

At work, when I have a document already open and want to open second document, it will open the document in the same window and not in a new window. Any successive docs I open will open in the same window as tabbed. I want to change my home format to match my work format.

I could not find this in Word help or the online tutorial

Anyone know?

Thanks =)
