Imaging, mass deployment to xp machines

Q: Imaging, mass deployment to xp machines

Currently looking for imaging software where I can throw an image on the server, and roll it out simultaneously to a bunch of different types of machines, all running XP.

Looked into Acronis TI, but license per machine. Would rather have a site license, not per individual machine. Also do not need incremental backups, just looking for a image deployment solution.

Also, how exactly does mass deployment work with computers of different hardware? All machines are dell, but some are newer than others, and newer ones are constantly coming in....how are any driver issues handled on the base image when rolling out an XP OS?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey all,

A couple years ago, I began a help desk job where no imaging was being used. Someone had been manually setting up as many as 20 machines a month. I quickly figured out some half-assed ways to image which I don't think will work in Windows 7 so I was coming to ask to be pointed in the right direction.

Current method:
-Setup a machine the way I want
-Take Image with Acronis off of a BartPE disc
-Run NewSID before joining to the domain
-Join to domain and setup user account

I read that NewSID was nothing more than a tool for breaking things Vista and later. Is sysprep where I need to be headed or is that for people not using an imaging tool?

I'm always looking for help and great forums - I hope to find both here!

Hello,
We are currently facing issues with around 1500 Windows 10 systems that seem to have vcredist 2013 x64 corrupted and apps that use this component fail to install due to the below error.

Product: Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x64 Minimum Runtime - 12.0.21005 -- A later version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x64 Minimum Runtime -12.0.21005 is already installed.
Is there a possibility to use MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall and deploy a script for it to remove just Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x64 Minimum Runtime?
We have tried force uninstalling with the installation setup of vcredist via cmd, but that does not work.
Thank you!

Hi all,
I have added a new set of drivers (Latitude E5570) to the deployment workbench. After importing the drivers I ran the update deployment share.

However when I try to start the Deployment on a workstation (via USB flash drive) I'm receiving an error that states "A connection to the deployment share could not be made. Connection OK. Possible cause: invalid credentials.

If I image any other workstation that already have drivers (HP/Dell) in the deployment workbench, the image installs with no issues.

If I'm missing any details please let me know, and any help will be appreciated.

In any case we have Asus T100 tablets running WIN8.1 Pro 32bit OS x64bit based processor, there are no legacy boot options in bios only EUFI i am trying to boot from a USB. A:Imaging & Deployment Options Asus T100

Here is what worked for me to successfully capture and deploy an Image on an Asus T100TA Tablet:
To Capture the WIM:
NOTES
• These instructions assume you have a basic understanding of OS Deployments and the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT).
• The source (aka “reference”) computer you are capturing should be in a workgroup, not joined to your domain. Disjoin your domain before continuing if necessary.
• You must have the same OS you’re trying to capture on the “reference” computer loaded into MDT – if your source computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise with Service Pack 1 x64 then that DVD/OS must be loaded into MDT
• For these instructions the computer running MDT will be referred to as \\MDT1 and the deployment share will be \Deploymentshare$
• These instructions will not include hitting “Next”, etc. unless that is the only action on a screen
Prepare your “reference” computer by installing your Operating System and any other customizations you will want. Once you have completed your build process continue on.
Setup MDT to Capture your image
1. Open MDT, then expand Deployments, then expand your deployment share
2. Right click “Task Sequences” and select “New Task Sequence”
a. Task Sequence ID: Capture
b. Task Sequence name: Capture Image
3. Select the “Sysprep and Capture” Task Sequence template

Hello,

I've recently been trying to use Macrium Reflect free to create a Windows PE, and it always failed with an error (number 112).

So I went to Microsoft to do it manually, got the Windows ADK (verson 5) and installed it. Then, using the Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment as Administrator. Using the instructions provided here (WinPE: Add Packages (Optional Components Reference)) I got an error. I was going to add support for Bitlocker, but I didn't get that far.

Specifically, I typed in the following:

Dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:"C:\WinPE_amd64\media\sources\boot.wim" /index:1 /MountDir:"C:\WinPE_amd64\mount"

After the second command, I got an error:

I have an issue with deploying Windows XP SP3 to a Panasonic CF-30 Toughbook.

The Toughbook requires an additional storage driver for the SATA hard drive. The controller is the "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller", for which I have obtained the latest driver from Intel's website. I can confirm that this is the correct driver because it successfully loads XP when booted from a VL XP SP2 disc and a floppy disc using the "F6" injection.

So I know I have the right driver. I just have to get it inject properly during the deployment from MDT 2010. According to the documentation, all I should have to do is import the driver, update my deployment share (updating the boot images), and MDT will take care of "updating" the necessary files (unattend.txt, etc.) with the proper modifications to inject the drivers. This didn't work.

The next step was to configure them manually. So here are the modifications that I have made:

1. The driver was imported into MDT as part of the first attempt.

2. I have added an \$OEM$ folder to the \i386 folder of the XP installation files within the Deployment Share, and a \TEXTMODE folder within that \$OEM$ folder. Within this \TEXTMODE folder, I have placed all of the SATA driver files.

3. I have altered the TXTSETUP.OEM file included with the driver files, only to change the default to be the controller I need. (I commented out the existing)

Hi JB,

The Unattended file is only an illustration to show you how to configure the XXXX.Sif file that would run your selections on an installation. Altering the Unattended file would not cause any problems nor do any good.

Good luck with the rest. Someone here should be able to help you further.

I am a network administrator using MDT 2013 to roll out Windows 8.1 machines to my organization.  The process is working well.  The issue I'm having is that after the machine is imaged, each user that logs into the machine and tries to use a webpage
in IE 11 that utilizes DOM storage doesn't work as expected.  The Developer Tools indicate that there is a "SCRIPT5: Access is Denied" on a line that tries to store something in the 'localStorage' object via JavaScript.  This page
will work on other browsers, and on other Windows 8.1 computers that are running IE11 with the same internet options set.  After googling, I found this page: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/066767a5-f9d5-45f4-95cf-dcd0ff030090/script5-access-is-denied-error-when-accessing-web-sites-using-localstorage

I had to use Process Monitor to determine where the computer was attempting to create the DOMStorage folder, because it wasn't in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\DOMStore, like the linked articles indicated, but rather in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\AppCache.

In the past when I had 2 XP machines and 2 98 machines I used Norton Ghost 2003 and send each image to a 250gb HD. I used ethernet cable for each machine (4) connected to a 802.11b router. I had to have each machine use NDIS driver on the boot disk (4) in a Master/Slave configuration. All was well...

Now with the two new Vista machines (ethernet to router), I cant find an NDIS driver for them and I'm probably sure that Norton 2K3 doesnt work with Vista anyway. One XP machine is wireless and the other is ethernet.

3 machines = ethernet
1 machine = wireless

I dont really want to buy a newer version of Ghost and I'm looking for some suggestions of how I can "image" each machine and send that file to my 250gb HD.

Well If you do not want to buy another copy of Norton Ghost then get the newest version of Acronis True Image it is better than anything Norton/Symantec makes anyways.

I'm attempting to use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 to deploy Windows 7.  When I attempt to update the deployment share, I get the following message: "Unable to mount the WIM, so the update process cannot continue."Not surprisingly the boot folders do not have the proper files created for the Win PE (which is the goal of updating the deployment share).

A:Unable to update deployment share for Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010

Pulled this from the help docsFailure to Update WIM Files
In a ?simple? environment:
·         For Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, MDT 2010 locates WIMGAPI.DLL in C:\Program Files\Windows Imaging, which should be in the system PATH. The WIMGAPI.DLL should not reside in C:\Windows\system32: It will be present in the C:\Program Files\Windows AIK directory tree, but MDT 2010 rarely uses it from that location.
·         For Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, MDT 2010 typically picks up WIMGAPI.DLL from C:\Windows\system32 (always in the path). The version of this WIMGAPI.DLL must match the version (build) of the operating system.
·         On a 64-bit operating system, MDT 2010 always uses the x64 WIMGAPI.DLL file; only that file should be in the system PATH. On a 32-bit operating system, MDT 2010 always uses the x86 WIMGAPI.DLL file; only that file should be in the system PATH. (Other products, such as System Center Configuration Manager, use the 32-bit version of WIMGAPI.DLL, even on a 64-bit operating system, but they manage and install that version.)
Problem: When attempting to update a deployment share, the user will be informed that the mounting of one or more .wim files did not succeed.
Possible Solution: Open a Command Prompt window and run where WIMGAPI.DLL. For the first entry in the list (the first location found by searching the path), ensure that the Version property matches the build of th... Read more

Hello,

I have a workgroup set up with about 10 computers: 6 running windows 7, and 4 running windows XP. This morning out of nowhere, the XP computers can't access the network (network is set up and hosted on Win 7 machine), and the Win 7 computers can't see the XP computers in the network.

4 things are happening that make this particularly weird:

1. from the Win 7 machines, I can ping the XP machines successfully, and from the XP machines I can ping the 7 machines successfully. They are both active on the network.

2. From the host computer (Win 7), I can see and access all of the XP computers, though the XP computers give me an error message when I try to even go so far as to find the Win 7 computers on the network.

3. From all the XP computers, I can see the other XP computers on the network, and from the Win 7 computers, I can see the other Win 7 computers.

and finally,

4. The Win 7 computer is hosting a database back end from which the front end on each of the computers (XP and 7) pulls the data. Both XP and 7 computers have no problem still pulling the data from the back end in the Shared Documents folder on the host computer, even though the XP computers can't see the network.

Any suggestions?

Everytime I take the screenshot it will always be bitmap file which is huge! and take alot of space... I have over 6 thousands images.

I tried ReaJPEG but since I convert thousands of picture at once... its slow... does any program that is quicker?

I like to take game screenshot... I want to convert all my screenshots all at once... thousands of pictures and I want to resize all at once without losing picture quality. I want a one piece program that lets me do all this. Is these any?

I am a screenshot taker but it is taking up my hard drive since it is bitmap file. I need to a program to convert it all to jpeg all at once and I need to resize it all at once without losing image quality... is there any program that does this?

My grammar is not well

A:Mass Convert, Mass Resize

when taking the screenshot
use the PrtSc button,
launch accessory-Paint
then PASTE into the Paint window

now just SAVE AS ... and change the format to jpg and add .jpg to the file name

edit:
there's a great utility called Graphic Converter which originally was for Macs but
I see http://www.etrusoft.com/download.htm has that product for PCs.

If it's a faithful port from the Mac, then there is a Convert More and/or Bulk Convert feature.

But when I try to access the XP machine with a 98 machine I get a "Enter Network Password" window, with a "Resource: //CHAD/IPC$" then it asks for a password, I have run network setup wizard, and in the security section, I have everyone for full access within the network, I also have a user name that is password protected for remote desktop access. I have tried using that password, but it will not let the win98 machines access the xp machine.

(do any of you have any experience using group policy to deploy service packs? i would like to automatically push out sp 4. i am currently using the microsoft software update services to automatically push out the critical updates. i actually ran into a problem with that as well. if i edit the default domain policy, my updates are pushed out. if i try to only apply it to a given ou, the updates are not pushed out. has anyone had this problem?

i ran across this link:

Windows 2000/XP SP Deployment

i don't have a test environment as such to test this first so i would like some feedback before i go forward with this.

thank you kindly in advance!)

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. Is there anyway I can specify a serial number when deploying a package via GPO? Its getting a bit tedious deploying the software then having to input the serial number 60 times :S

Cheers.

A:GPO deployment

Use a program like nLite to create an installation package to which you can incorporate the Serial Number and any number of tweaks. This works pretty much the same way as a Sysprep install.

Hello...

Just want to know what solution do you guys use to install Win XP pro corp over 90 computers. All computers are identical and I can network them using a switch or router with a centralized server. I was thinking doing a LAN boot and then from there each PC would install XP from the server. What do you have to say?

VB6 - Does anybody have any suggestions on how to deploy a vb6 application to a computer using Windows 7 or 8. I have vb6 running on my win7 computer but I would like to be able to deploy my application on a client's win 7 machine. This application has been running successfully on the client's Win XP machine for years. The client wants to buy a new computer which will probably have Win 8. Can the Package and Deployment Wizard that comes with VB6 be used? I do have a copy of VB10. Can this help me deploy a vb6 program?

Hello,
I downloaded PowerPivot for Office 2010 and installed it manually to one computer with no problems. Now I try to deploy this MSI package to few similar workstations with GP but this fails. I can see from logs that installation has started but failed. I suspect
that this has something to do with UAC on Windows7 clients.
I can start the MSI manually with command prompt from same network location that my GPO starts it but the UAC prompts me to accept changes rightaway. So is the a option to disable or say yes to user prompt automatically?? Thanks!

A:UAC and MSI deployment?

Hi,

You can try to disable UAC on Windows 7:
1. Access User Control Panel from Start Menu -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Account
2. Click on

User Account Control settings link.

3. Move the Slider to Never Notify
4. Click OK to make the change effective
5. Reboot.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

OK, so I have been doing XP the easy way and now I have to deploy Win7 the Microsoft way. They give you all sorts of tools to use but no direction on how to use them. Does anyone have a link to senisble instructions on this process? How to create the image (I can do that I think), how to get it to the server and how to image multiple PC's.

Thanks, Ted

I have installed a Windows 7 Enterprise reference image. I have added a Windows 7 boot image on my WDS server and created a capture image, I have added the Ethernet and the storage driver to the boot image. When I PXE boot the refernce computer with the
capture image the WINPE is not loading, the green bar runs from side to side for a sec. and then black screen, I have tried to leave the computer for some hours but still black screen.
Any idears?

A:Windows 7 WDS deployment

Hi,
I consider this issue can be caused if the driver you added into boot image fail to install.

Please try the suggestions in this article:
Error message when you start a PXE client to connect to a WDS server on a Windows Server 2003 SP1-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer: "WdsClient: An error occurred while starting networking"
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/923834
Post back the setupapi.dev.log if you fail to get this issue resolved by above suggestions.

Keep post. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]

I wonder if you can help me with deploying Windows 10, I have a few questions;

Can I deploy W10 like I currently do via WDS 2008?

What software can I use to create a customized W10 DVD that allows me to alter/disable some of the standard initial setup questions?

We pay for an OVS agreement, should I be able to get a copy of Windows 10 from the VLSC? I cant seem to find a Windows 10 ISO, just 7 & 8?

Further questions may come aling, just trying to get a grasp of it all.

Many thanks.

Hi All, new to the forum,

Has anyone had any joy using the DISM image deployment tool,

below is the message i get trying to capture an image

DISM doesn't recognise the command-line option "d:\thinimage.wim"

I've tried the below.

dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile "d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

I've checked this over and over and i'm defiantly following the line they require.... any ideas? Thanks.

A:Win 8 Image Deployment

I know nothing about DISM, so please check what I say first...

...but looking at the format of the command line, I wonder if there should be a colon after /imagefile?

so replace
dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile "d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

with
dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile:"d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

Hi All,

Here is our situation.

We have a little over 100 users all of whom have a corporate signature. However these signatures are images so each individual user has a different image containing their name and contact details. Is there any way that we can deploy all of these signatures to the relevant users automatically rather than having to go round and install them on each individual PC.

We use Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory, but if there are any other tools that can help us do this then any information would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

A:Deployment of Signatures

It would be hard to deploy the image to every user in that manner since the file names would be different. I am sure you could use some sort of environment variable to grab it from their user profile or some other shared location and integrate it into the script found here:

Any thoughts on the best and/or simplest way to deploy applications to workstations which are not members of our Domain? What apps are available that will allow me to, for example, create an installation package for an appilication complete with all the configuration options I'd like and then place that package somewhere on a server or even burn it on a CD so that launching the package would be the only task required to install/configure the app. Also, what's available that would allow me to remotely place the install package (or any file for that matter) on the desktop (or start menu)of a large number of non-domain workstations based on the IP address of the workstation. Thanks for any pointers...

Hi everyone,
i know the internet is full of guides and tutorials but i haven't got what i'm looking for.
My situation is as follows:
Our corporation buys oem licensed windows 7 computers from our suppliers.
we would like to create an image with icd , without overwriting the product keys (since we don't buy volume keys, paying 2 times seems a little stupid aswell). We would like the icd image to join the domain under a variable name (something like desktop01
- desktop02 etc ...).Also it should be able to enable the built in local administrator and disable any other local user besides domain users.

within this icd image i would like to add other applications aswell (symantec antivirus, citrix, adobe reader, office365, etc...).
Is this possible ? if so could anyone guide me to a fairly easy guide where i can do all this stuff?

We're doing a quick POC for ATA. The first stage - where a couple of DCs had the ATA Lightweight Gateway deployed - was promising, and we'd like to extend the scope to further DCs. However, since some of our DCs are running Windows Server 2008 R2, this presents
a problem since .NET Framework 4.6.X requires a reboot. To add to the problem the ATA client itself requires another reboot. We also want to avoid doing a manual install on each DC - which would mean automatic deployment, maybe as simple as a GPO (with the
.exe first packaged as a .msi - an older thread about it
here) or invoking psexec with an include file to specify the list of remote machines. Looking at the silent installation instructions the
setup can pause automatically and not initiate the reboot of the machine - allowing a degree of control and preventing critical systems going down at an inappropriate time.
In the referenced article above it's stated that "When using the -NoRestart flag and restart will be required as part of the installation, the installer will pause until the server is restarted", which hints that there's no way for avoiding the
2-restarts issue. But just to be sure - has anyone found a workaround for deploying this in one go ? Eg deploy .NET Framework followed immediately by the ATA client.
Also - I was just thinking above of some ways to deploy the client automatically, but probably they might not be the best pick or someone went already through this proces... Read more

Please help I am lost.

Firstly, I try to run an exe file which addresses an Access file on my computer and it works fine I transferred to another computer i get a 429 Activex error.

I then created an installation program with P&D Wizard and when I try to install it on my computer and the other one I get a MISMATCH ERROR --without a code number.

Maybe this means something the Access file is created with Access 97 but computer that it is about to be ran on it loaded with 2003.

Maybe another installer might work --I dont know. Is there any other installer that is easier to use? I mean just add my exe and access file and the installer automatically chooses all needed dll and ocx.
Pleas help me. Thanks

I'm having a problem after the deployment of a Windows 7 client (LTI). I captured a custom image, but after I deploy it to a client pc, i get an MMC error when I try to open Computer management (MMC console detected an error in the snap-in and it will be
removed - I translated this). It does so twice and after that the mangement console opens without the event viewer and the scheduled tasks snap-ins. The same thing happens if I start the MMC console or either of these two snap-ins from the command prompt.
I have tried to build and cpture a fresh image several times, always the same thing. Another thing is, with the last image, I left it stand for some time before I captured it and so the grace period expired, i didn't do any rearm. I thought that sysprep resets
the grace period, but this isn't the case, I get a black desktop after deployment. Is there a way to work around this?
Windows version is Windows 7 Professional x86, with the following software:
- Oracle Dev 1.6 and 6i, with patches 9 and 17
- Lotus Notes 8.5.1
- NetOp Remote Host 9.50
- F-Secure Client Security 9.01
- Cute PDF
- Alternatiff viewer
All of the above is installed before the capture.
These are installed during deployment:
- Microsoft Office 2010
- JRE
- Flash player
- Shockwave
- Acrobat reader
Before the capture everything works fine.
Thank you for any help.
Edit: I'm using Deployment Workbench and I edit the answer file with System Image Manager.
