Lenovo w450 does not boot after upgrade BIOS

Q: Lenovo w450 does not boot after upgrade BIOS

Yesterday, After the "Lenovo solution center" told me that , I should upgrade the BIOS, I ran the BIOS upgrade and my Lenovo w450 doesn't boot anymore! The total black scary screen appears whaterver I press the power button many times, many long presses (actually the screen was not started) ?! The laptop do nothing. It seems to be that nothing happen. I tried to remove battery, wait...follow the instructrion , do everything but it doesnot boot. I brroght the laptop to the local Lenovo service authorizer. After 2 hours later, they told me that the laptop BIOS is broken down, and then I have to pay 100$ to order the new one!!!! although my quaranty date is still valid until 2017 (according to "Lenovo auto detecting" service said that). It's a shame.I don't even sure that the issue is cause by the BIOS or not. Besides, The Lenovo solution center "told" me that: I have to run the BIOS upgrade and now it break down the laptop. Now I have to wait at least a week to get the new BIOS shipping (I'm from VN) all my works are now pospond, and I loose the customers every day. For me. from now on, I'll keep away from Lenovo products and tell my friend do so. Enough the complaination. My questions are:- Before the BIOS is died for upgrade, the Laptop still boot very slow. The time to enter the BIOS before go to OS startup is very loooong, There are many people have the same issue like me on Google but there are no truely answer for it. Is there any Lenovo thinkpad expert can help me anwser it ?- Is replacing the New BIOS make my lenovo w540 alive and resolve the issue (slooowwwing boot) above? I cost 100$ for this but there is no quaranty for me that it will work. I'm very glad if someone help me answer two questions above.Have a good day.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo w450 does not boot after upgrade BIOS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would try resetting the BIOS using the jumper, or by taking out the CMOS battery, wait a minute or two, and then replace it and try booting up. See page 73 of the Hardware Maintenance Manaul linked below for location of the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper (# 20) https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/m83m93p_hmm.pdf Clearing the CMOS (BIOS)1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer. 2. Remove the computer cover. 3. Locate the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper on the system board. 4. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) to the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 5. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. 6. Turn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for approximately five seconds. 7. Repeat step 1 through step 2. 8. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back to the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2). 9. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. Good Luck,

I did a bios upgrade from official site. There weren't any problems with update. After update I noticed that from time to time somputer just shut down whithout any information in logs, after restart everything is working. The problem only exits when I used a battery not AC adapter. The problem dissapear after BIOS downgrade to: 9ECN37WW(V2.01) Just needed to change BIOS seetings to allow downgrade. The shutdown occured on Windows 8.1 and also Linux openSUSE 13.2

I ran into a similar problem and noticed the problem while I was in the middle of traveling. I made various changes over time so it was hard for me to determine exactly what was going on at first. These changes included:1) Replacing Windows 10 with Windows 72) Dual booting Gentoo Linux3) Upgrading firmware to whatever the latest version was at the time4) Replacing awful stock hard disk with faster SSDSometime after all those historical changes, the laptop was shutting down on me while I was in the middle of working while I was runing Gentoo. Assumed that the laptop was overheating, so I started monitoring the heat sensors but didn't notice anything odd. Laptop would suddenly shutdown while I was in the middle of typing on the keyboard.I figured maybe there was a Linux kernel related problem, so I switched to Windows and was surprised to see the same behavior. From there I noticed that there was a new firmware update for 3.04, so I upgraded to that but noticed the shutdowns continue.Installed Windows 10 on the old hard disk and swapped it out, replicated the issue on Windows 10.Checked firmware again, noticed that Lenovo pulled 3.04 and only offered 3.03, so I downgraded to that with no luck.Called Lenovo support, they told me to run their support app to analyze the hardware, started getting blue screens of death due to a different issue. Please Help! I ran the Lenovo BIOS Upgrade for Thinkpad E540 for Windows 7; it didn?t work. (?Failure to Read BIOS?) So I downloaded the ISO version, and burned it to a CD. My laptop boots up ONLY from the CD. Now exactly what do I do now, in simple instructions, to upgrade from the ISO CD to the new updated BIOS so that it would be on my laptop (instead of having to boot from the CD every time)? Thanks!

A:How do I Lenovo BIOS Upgrade for Thinkpad E540 for Windows 7 from ISO CD?

Welcome to the forum!

If you boot from the CD (and the ISO was correctly burned on the CD), you only need to follow the instructions on the screen. If I remember correctly you need to press Enter once, (eventually confirm by pressing the "Y" key) and then the BIOS will be updated. After that you can remove the CD and boot normally.

You need to be connected to the AC and have a full charged battery before the update.

Hope this helps...

Pressing Power Button on my G50-45 causes laptop to try to post (Front Led is lit,you can hear HD spinning etc). After some seconds trying with nothing on screen (no post showing) laptop is reset and the same loop continues for ever.If I left it do this loop, after some time, (I don't know how much time as I usually left it do this ovenight) laptop posts and goes to standby (I am always find it in standby mode Front Led blinkink.). If I press any button laptop wakes up and all things are working great Until Restart when same loop occures.Trying upgrade bios from v1.07 to latest V38 (2.06) but as soon as insyde flasher starts flashing bios (erase/write) windows is restarted (without allowing flasher to finish I THING) causing the same loop to occure. After many restarts without proper post a message appear which states that the bios was not correct for that model. If I press any key to reset after many reset loops I concluded with window in stand by mode again. Any Suggestions for a propper bios Update which I think is the problem ? ? ?

About three weeks ago I upgraded BIOS on my laptop (as suggested by Lenovo Vantage) to latest version (N14ET45W (1.24), 3/01/2018). I am running Windows 10 64 bit. Shortly after that I started suffering quite frequent momentary freezing events where I had to wait between 10 to 40 seconds for the machine to continue working. During this period many of the running apps were closed and then reopened and I could not type or do any other thing. As you can imagine, this turned to be quite frustrating. I started searching at several forums, mainly Windows 10 related forums for a solution. U tried every possible solution, from updating all drivers to editing Registry etc. with no positive results at all. I was finally considering a full reimage of my machine when my latest resource turned to be rolling back my BIOS, as after checking on dates it seemed my suffering started shortly after my latest Lenovo Vantage drivers and BIOS update. Accordingly, I rolled Back from indicated BIOS to N14ET45W (1.23), 2/28/2018.Voila! This was the required solution. After that, my machine has been running smoothly, with no freezing events.Hope I had found a solution at any forum, and that?s why I am sharing this information here, as I really spent almost three weeks of frustration and unsuccessful searching/testing. I think Lenovo should test better and BIOS release. Hope my post may help other X1 Carbon 3rd Gen with a similar issue. DO NOT UPGRADE BIOS TO version (N14ET45W (1.24), 3/01/2018!!... Read more

I'm suspecting a Motherboard problem. It's the i5-52000u w/ R7 M360 AMD GPU.When powering on, nothing happens for a while. A clicking sound is heard out of one speaker, at approx 1 hertz. Also the screen barely visibly flickers at the same frequency. When problem first noticed, the machine would go through 20-100 of these cycles Before loading up "lenovo" sign, BIOS,etc , then progressively more.I've tried combinations of booting with peripherals (VGA, HDMI, usbs, power cable) plugged in and not.The amount of cycles the laptop goes through before finally loading the Lenovo screen, from which OS boot sequence starts, or accessible BIOS via num+f2, has been increasing, to the point of taking an hour. I've opened her up to see if anything is poorly plugged in, everything works well. The thermal logic chips work ok, the HDD spins ok. But the BIOS and any boot sequence is inaccessible until it randomly starts working. Mostly I have to wait 30 min to an hour, but sometimes it's only 15 minutes. It's probably the Motherboard, but I wanna know what failed/failing?The laptop works flawlessly once the LENOVO logo shows up; i can access BIOS, etc. This happens during a restart, an on- and off.I've tried disconnecting the battery, and pulling the CMOS battery out and letting it sit for like 10 minutes. Kinda sucky. Because it's probably some small voltage regulator or something that's super faulty. At this point, the laptop is approaching three years old. Replacement Mobos are like ... Read more

So I tried updating the BIOS on my Lenovo M92p desktop using Lenovo System Update program. Unfortunately, it didnt work and i ended up with a blank screen. I waited for about 10 minutes and still nothing happened. I decided to hold the power button and had it shut off. After multiple power ons, still no POST. I read the HMM and the section about BIOS boot block recovery. It said I needed to burn an iso file to a CD and also move the CMOS jumper to pins 2 & 3. Since I dont have a cd, I put the bios flash package on a usb drive instead, plugged it into pc, and also moved CMOS jumper to 2 & 3. Computer turns on and there are two beeps. No display. Does this mean I will have to get a CD?

A:[CRITICAL] Lenovo y50-70 Doesnt Boot Up AFTER BIOS...

Hi there, Yuvaraj ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Power down the machine, remove the AC adapter and battery.
Hold the power button for 30secs and reconnect the AC adapter only then turn the computer ON.

If the machine still doesn't power up normally and boot into Windows then it's likely that something went wrong (could be a bad BIOS flash or an internal component might have gone defective during or after the BIOS update).
Also, check the cable to the SSD and the system board.

Last resort would be, issue with motherboard. I would recommend you to contact Lenovo service center and report your findings. For more details, Schedule a Call-back for faster support.

Update us how it goes.

I used Rufus to create a bootable USB and insalled Ubuntu 16.04, after that it seems that Windows got a trojan (I couldn't start programs as admin, rufus itself could not be started and -internet Explorer was failing).  It was necessary to restore Windows using the lenovo partition.  Windows is fine now, but the option to start from an USB is gone from the BIOS, instead there are two options to start with Windows MBR (one of them is the one I re-configured to start Ubuntu, the other one goes directly into Windows), one for Ubuntu and another one for the net.  I need to boot again from a USB (I need to install another Ubuntu), but I can't get the option back.  How do I add it again to the BIOS menu?

Hi everybody, I saw many of problems like mine there, but I can't still do anything after several attempts to solve that.  It started two weeks ago.. I did cleaned my hdd, then to keep my device lil a bit update I have updated few drivers. First day, it was able to boot up after 10-15 attempts. (Holding down the power button, disc. battery, ac, reconnect and power button again). Since that time I was unable to get to the BIOS, set Boot order, and I couldn't see even the splash screen. Several days it did the same and the attempts grew up.  Last time it was able to launch, its about 4 days ago, I was watching, film then I felt asleep. When I woke up in the morning, the screen wasn't black but still slighty light(not off, fans were working, cooler was fine). Since that moment I couldn't boot it anymore. I tried reseting CMOS battery, tried to flash bios by using flash disk and Fn+R (laptop did different thing but after 15secs it has turned off).. I think it is frozen BIOS but I haven't clue what to do when I can't simply set the boot order.  Maybe I am wrong and the problem is only in the motherboard. Novo button works but everything I choose there, it ending by black screen again.  Thanks for help, maybe for any solutions how to fix this. I am prepared to buy another motherboard, but if I would be able to repair it on my own, I would happy. Thanks,Jakub.

Hey guys, so recently I purchased a Lenovo T510 laptop, upgraded it to windows 10, and decided to upgrade the RAM in it (the stock 2GB just won't do), knowing that the most RAM it can be upgraded to is 8gb, I purchased G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) RAM from newegg here is the linkhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...I did the research before hand and seen that this RAM should be compatible with the T510, so I powered off the system, removed the battery, and went to town and 5 minutes later had it all put back together. Upon powering up it would boot to the windows start screen, then shut off, reboot to the windows start screen, shut off, and would repeat this process indefinitely. I checked the BIOS and the RAM is registering and all is fine on that end as far as I know. So after about 2 hours  of trouble shooting and looking through forums, I decided to put back in the stock 2GB ram and it boots fine again, anyone have any suggestions on what to do to get it to accept the 8 gigs of Ripjaws?

Hi, I own a Lenovo G50-45 and, after installing Windows 10, i upgraded my bios to version 38, downloaded from here:http://support.lenovo.com/it/it/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/g50-45-noteboo...The upgrade process terminated at 100% and after showing "Updating ECM" or similar, the system shutted down. Now I cannot boot anymore, I tried all procedures, keep pressing the power button, etc. but they don't work.

A:G50-45 won't boot after bios upgrade

Have you tried to default the BIOS by removing AC power and Battery, then press and hold the power button for more than 10 seconds?  If not, you should try it, then when you have that completed, replace the main battery then AC power and attempt to boot the computer using the Lenovo button (has an upside down V on it) that is next to the power button.  This should allow you to enter BIOS where you can "reset to default" values, then save and exit.

If this does not work - you may need to contact a service center to have the system re-flashed.

Hi there, who can help, please?

The computer is only a few weeks old and I had some CPU temperature reading issues with Asus PC Probe 2 and I thought that downloading a newer version PC Probe might do the trick.
The new PC Probe 2.250 did not install but required for the BIOS version (12/26/2005) to be updated with a BIOS version (09/22/97 or later?). Well, I could find no such thing but decided that the youngest BIOS P5(LGA775) Version 0702 would be fine.
Not so, the PC no longer boots and I think that some BIOS auto detection of IDE devises are of concern.

Primary IDE Slave [LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-]
Secondary IDE Master [ST3120023A] <this is actually HD 2, no OS
Secondary IDE Slave [Not Detected]
Third IDE Master [Not Detected]
Third IDE Slave [WDC WD2000JS-22MHB] <this is where the OS is, Win XP
Secondary IDE Master [Not Detected]
Secondary IDE Slave [Not Detected]

No trouble booting when hitting (F8) and manually selecting the boot devise.

Currently I have reinstalled the old BIOS but there were no changes to the above settings, the system will not boot unless I use the manually (F8) and select the boot drive.

Thank you very much for your effort.

Chris K.

A:BIOS upgrade went bad, cant boot

so there is nothing on the monitor when you turn on the pc ?
if you see anything on the monitor it is not the bios , try clearing your cmos, since you have flashed the bios

Good afternoon, I am quite disappointed because I see many problems with BIOS or BOOT problems for Lenovo Z580.I still can't find solution for my problem. The point is I can't go to the BIOS with lenovo recovery button. I had to pull out battery of bios and then I could go there. When I changed some options and saved the settings, the bios had still same options like before. I can't swtich the boot priorities. However I inserted boot flash with WIN10 to install that, but I can't because of the boot priorities. I am stucked. Also I tried all key shortcuts, It does nothing. I really don't want to  take out the HDD and re-install the windows in different PC via sata.  Can you tell me how should I boot the flash or CD with windows when I can't set up the boot priotiry? All I can see is blackscreen.  The point with lenovo recovery button is also weird. When i start laptop via this button I see the menu with options but after I choose one of them for example ''recovery" or "bios " It does nothing.  Thanks, David Byrtus

My laptop had an issue with bios chip failure so I had to change my bios chip. So I gave to lenovo service center and they changed the bios chip and gave me back. Now what happens is whenever I boot up my laptop it takes 20-22+ seconds to show me the lenovo bios logo and boots up the OS. And OS runs slower than before. I tried reinstalling the OS but the same issue occurs.task manager shows last bios time 20+ secs

Hello,I've just updated BIOS using BIOS Update from your support page (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/pl/pl/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-v-series-laptops/v110-15isk/...). After that instead of loading Windows I get boot menu. In boot menu after selecting HDD I get black screen and after few seconds boot menu appears again. Is there anything that I could do to make this work normally???

Hey guys, so I've gotten myself in a bit of a pickle. Ok, long story short, the hard drive in my Lenovo Y50 crashed and started doing the click of death.  Fed up with dealing with Western Digital, I said "screw it" and drove to the nearest computer store and bought a Kingston 480GB SSD (Which I am LOVING so far). However, because the size of the drive was smaller, my recovery USB refused to restore the operating system, so I had to borrow my friends computer, download the media creation tool and do a clean install of Windows 10 that way. Everything was totally fine, then I remembered I had forgotten something really important. Every single back up I've ever done was with Lenovo Onekey Recovery. A program that I did not have anymore. So obviously my next course of action was to get a recovery key from Lenovo. I called the number, explained the situation, and they sent me the key that I got in the mail today. I plugged it in expecting the rest of the road to be filled with puppies and rainbows... but it's not looking that way. Going into BIOS, it does not see the Lenovo Recovery key as a boot option. I've since made my own clean windows 10 recovery drive than can be booted into fine, but it doesnt recognize the lenovo drive as a bootable UEFI device either. Furthermore, it doesn't matter if I set BIOS to UEFI or Legacy Support... it still doesn't recognize the drive either way. The guy on the phone told me he'd have to send me a windows 8.1 key, si... Hi nikar15 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number? Check on the machine number from the sticker or check it from here ,just keep your serial number confidential.
Was it previously on Win8.1 ? Did you manage to create a recovery media ?

It would have to power drain the machine by removing the charger , battery and harddrive and to press and hold down the power for 12 seconds.

Without the harddrive and battery , try going to the BIOS by FN + F2 or use the Novo button to start. If you manage to get the BIOS set up screen , go to the Exit Tab and load optimal defaults and save and exit. Turn off and put back the battery and harddrive and check.

Update us how things go.

Regards
