This About.blank solution seems to be working

Q: This About.blank solution seems to be working

If you are having no luck removing About.blank, try this, It's seems to be working for me so far. I found this solution on another site.

Try this:

Open your browser so you'll will see (automaticly) the startpage "about:blank"

Now go to the "view source" option of your browser. Look for a string that looks like:

res://%43%3a%5c (etc,), make a copy of this complete string (control c) and go to:

http://www.simplelogic.com/Developer/URLDecode.asp

Paste the string in here and press on "clean data".

Now a ***.dll file appears... Go to the directory where it's in (windows/system32) and activate "show hidden files" in this directory. Close all applications. Removing the dll file is not possible, but you can rename it, so do that! Then run your spyware remover and anti-virus.
Than restart, and TADAA!

Now I have a question..What does About.blank do besides change your start page?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,
I've been wrestling with this problem a while now, and have tried pretty near all the hints and tips on the Forum to no avail.
Having lost one or two DVD's formatting them via the open Explorer folder method and choosing the
'Live File System' or 'Mastered', only to find the DVD un-useable as it's already FULL, ie no free space.
Got to thinking about that, and realised you don't really FORMAT a DVD the way you do a hard drive,
you burn files to it. So I had a look and thought, where is the BURN option on my Windows Explorer
ribbon bar ?
This is what you should see - Mine was missing....
[See attachment - Ribbon Bar 01]

Off to the big Google in the sky to look into this, and found an article showing how to REMOVE the BURN option, so I thought, well if you can remove it, you can put it back.

This is the article, hope the mods don't mind me showing something from another Forum.
How to Remove ?Burn? Button from Windows Explorer Command Bar in Windows 7? - Tweaking with Vishal

If you read through it, things are quite straight forward, even though it is a REGISTRY poke about, so
make sure you BACKUP the registry first.
Assuming most of you have either the Home Basic or Home Premium versions of Windows 7, the 2nd part of the article is more relevant.

Following the instructions as if I was going to REMOVE the BURN button, I was surprised to find I had the DWORD 'NoCDBurning' already in my registry !! [How it got there I have no idea] I took the simple step of d... Read more

A:Blank CD/DVD read problem - Possible solution.

One word of caution, UDF formatted discs (RW) have a history of losing format and/or data. This goes back many years and includes Nero InCD, Roxio Drag to disc, etc. It would appear these discs can be used like the old floppies and to add, remove data, reformat, use again, etc. But its an iffy proposition. Best suggestion, if you want to use UDF, do not have your only copy of any data on one of these.

My take is if I want to put it on a disc, I use an "R" disc only. Discs are now relatively cheap so 10 or 15 cents (US) for something to save data to is insignificant. The other option is to use a flash drive instead of an RW disc, you can then read, write, rewrite, etc.

I also use a regular burning program (I have the full Nero suite that I use in my recording studio). The free and popular Imgburn and CDBurnerXP are other options.

The solution for Vista Home Premium 32Bit:Go to power options. You will be changing the setting for each of the three types of power plans individually. For each, click on "change advanced power settings"Find Multimedia SettingsIn drop down un "when sharing media option" select "allow the computer to sleep" .All power plans should be changed to this setting.Very simple. I have put my computer to sleep several times and it reboots fine and the monitor comes on fine. I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard, 2600+ XP AMD processor, ATI Radeon 9500 Duel Pro video card, and Samsung SyncMaster 215TW flat panel display. After dealing with support for ASUS, ATI, and Samsung all blaming each other for the problem I solved it myself.

Problem: After the display had been working fine I was getting a blank screen at boot up. I tried everything all the support sites said, ?Disable USB support on motherboard, powered on the display before computer, updated all drivers.? I was only able to get the display to be detected by using the DVI-I to VGA adapter. Only once in a blue moon would the display be detected using the DVI-D cable.

After resetting my bios 30 times, reseating the video card 10 times, and testing all the ports on my display and video card, hours reading the support forums, I figured it out. When my display was detected the EDID information for my display frequency was 75Hz though Samsung reports it to be 60Hz when run at 1680x1050. My motherboard?s default bios setting is auto and does not have 60Hz. Samsung support told me to low the refresh rate in Windows when the display was detected WRONG. I would not get the port to detect monitor. If I set the bios to 50Hz for the AGP bus the computer would not boot. Then I set it to 66Hz the next setting no boot. Then I tried 75Hz the computer booted but the display was not detected. Then there was some information on a support for DVI problems with DVI-D cable and voltage levels. With... Read more

As you can see in the photo my Microsoft Outlook icon has turned into a blank page with a box in the middle.

How can I restore it to its original image?

A:Outlook icon has changed into blank page with box in middle, solution?

Have you done anything described here?

As a solution you can do the following:
1. Unpin this thing from taskbar.
2. Go to Office folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
Or Program Files (x86) if you installed it there.

3. Find OUTLOOK.EXE , Right click - Copy.
4. In the same folder Right click - Paste Shortcut.
5. PIN THAT shortcut.

If you try to pin exe files itself, you will get missing icon. So you need to pin a shortcut that you will make yourself.

Hello!

I have 2 problems. My first problem is precisely the one described in Troubleshoot failures in detecting new Bluetooth mouse or keyboard. My second problem is to
implement the suggested solution.

I simply can't delete the indicated registry entries because Regedit
doesn't allow me to change their permissions. When I try to take
ownership, I face messages like

"The registry editor couldn't change the proprietary in the key currently selected or some of its subkeys"

(or something like that. I translated it from Portuguese.)

In fact, I can't even read the content of some subkeys.

I am administrator and single user on my personal laptop.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

A:MS Solution in kb811805 not working

The problem is, you are *not* actually an administrator - you run with a split user permissions token, and have the same rights as a regular user by default. The default Administrator account is disabled with no password by default on a Windows 7 machine, and it probably makes sense to enable this account, give it a password, and log in with this account to resolve the issue because it is not subject to some of the token restrictions other administrative accoutns are subject to when UAC is enabled. Once you're sure the problem is fixed, disable the Administrator account again for security reasons.

Hi all,
my synaptics touchpad installed in a zepto znote laptop 6014W stopped working a while ago and I've googled the problem VERY much, reinstalled drivers and all such things.

The touchpad had disappeared from the device manager and left a couple of weird devices in 'other devices' such as a root bus enumerator, mass storage controller, serial port among others.

I thought the touchpad was dead, but then I tried to just 'uninstall' 'disable' and kill every device in other I wasn't sure I needed. Then reboot and the touchpad worked again.

I write this because this site gets google hits, and maybe someone will be helped by this.

Method: uninstall all devices in 'other devices'

The weird thing about this is that these other devices had nothing to do with the touchpad when I checked hardware id and position.

"touchpad not working"

Do you have any ideas how to reinstall only DHCP or any other solution?

I have recently installed Cyberlink BD Solution on my system to play Blu-ray DVD movies. However after following update instructions, reinstalls, and various other nightmares the problem lies squarely with these set of programmes.
After advice from other fellow members I have a completely clean install of Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 and associated motherboard, sound card, graphics card drivers.
I have reinstalled the BD Solution Disc, and on the first attempt to play a DVD it asked me to update - you have too because it won't do a damn thing unless you do. This I duly did - an 84MB update that would have been quicker to write down and type in than download from Cyberlink. However I have saved it and installed it. Did it help - no. It stopped telling me I needed an update but flagged Error code 8004014. I then went to Cyberlink website to download their BD Advisor which scans your pc to test all the various functions and tell you what is missing or wrong - I passed. Then I went to Cyberlink Vista Ready webpage, downloaded the program and ran the test. Success, apparently the Power2Go was not vista capable (even though on the original CD is clearly stamped Vista Ready). So a free upgrade was available duly downloaded, installed, and ran the Vista Ready check again - passed. Confidence rising again so put DVD back in and hit play - error code 8004014 again. Hi, All:

I've spent a week trying to get webcams of different brands (A4Tech PK-635 and Pixart Imaging OEM) to work with a dozen PIIIs (440BX chipset). I tried installing various patches and stuff to no avail. I finally solved it this afternoon without so much as a reinstall of the OS.

First off, run the Windows 98SE unofficial service pack v2.1

Install your webcam's drivers

Then fix the problem by running the Directx 9.0c redistributable installer, even if you've already installed it earlier.

I've seen similar frustrations with various webcams and Windows 98, so I thought I'd make a separate thread about this solution.

Long story short, the ultimate solution, to my dilemma, would be a way to "Disable Active Scripting" on a "per-website" basis.

However, from all of the research that I have done thus far, that option looks grim.

Using Internet Explorer, here is the problem at hand:

I go to a website, one of those websites where, when you click on an Input box, say like a search field, automatically via Java Script, one Pop-Under, or more, appear.

Not Pop-Up, Pop-Under, there is a substantial difference, trust me, as Pop-Ups are stoppable.

This is a great annoyance to me, as to anyone, as that Pop-Under is almost always advertising based.

I have tried a number of solutions, from a number of various engineering sites throughout the net, to stop that Pop-Under, but, for some reason, being that Pop-Under is being called from Script, it appears impossible to stop, at any cost, short of turning off Active Scripting, which I can not afford to do, as some sites, I still need the scripting on.

Just a few of the solutions I have tried:

* I look in the source code of the web page, gather all address that refer to advertising, get the Name Server IP, add those IP's to the HOSTS file. Still gets through.

* Do a video screen capture as the Pop-Under is called, to go back slowly, and see the very fast flashing IP of the offending Pop-Under. Add that IP/Address to HOSTS, still gets through.

* Took the offending IP of the Pop-Under and attempted to block it via Windows... Read more

A:Windows 7 - No Solution Working To Block Specific IP

It shouldn't matter that the IP is called from a Script. Is it possible they are maybe using different IPs, hidden frames etc to fool you into blocking the wrong IP?! Have you looked at the page source? Have you tried Developer Tools(F12)? From there you can see all connections from a window/tab. In the IE window you want to check, press F12, go to the "Network" tab and press play, then do a reload/refresh in the IE window.

The Windows Firewall by default allows all outbound connections. You can still add block rules without having to change the default value from allow to block.

To block the entire pop-under from opening you have to block Scripts from executing at the page that's creating the pop-under window. And my understanding is that you don't want do to that, not for all sites anyway.

A blacklist approach is not as good as a white list approach. For example you could use zone Trusted instead of Restricted, and set the Internet zone to level High. It takes more time to maintain a white list but it'll work much better!
I have IE configured this way: Internet Zone = High, Trusted = Medium-High. I then add trusted domains like this: *.google.com
This approach won't stop all content from untrusted sites, but it will stop all Scripts and other less safe content.

If you still want to go for a blacklist approach, it should be possible. You just have to make sure you have the correct IP's to block, and from what you describe I'm not sure you have.

The first thing I'd do is run chkdsk from the Recovery Console.

Instructions:

1) Boot from the Vista CD

2) Choose the Repair -> Recovery Console options when prompted.

3) Type "chkdsk /r" (without the quotes) at the prompt

This will likely take 30-40 minutes, but often solves many OS related issues.

If chkdsk hangs or otherwise doesn't complete all 5 steps, let me know. That's unlikely, but I've seen it happen.

Assuming chkdsk does complete, reboot the laptop and see if you can access internet options or still receive errors. Reply with results.

On the infected computer, right click on the Internet Explorer's icon, or any other browser's icon, and select Run As or Run as Administrator. If you are using Windows XP, you will be prompted to select a user and enter its password. It is suggested that you attempt to login as the Administrator user. For Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you will be prompted to enter your Administrator account password.Once you enter the password, your browser will start and you can download the above FixNCR.reg file. When saving it, make sure you save it to a folder that can be accessed by your normal account. Remember, that you will be launching the browser as another user, so if you save it to a My Documents folder, it will not be your normal My Documents folder that it is downloaded into. Instead it will be the My Documents folder that belongs to the user you ran the browser as. Once the download has finished, close your browser and find the FixNCR.reg file that you downloaded. Now double-click on it and allow the data to be merged. You should now be able to run your normal executable programs and can proceed to the next step.

I was going to post a message asking for help with a Windows Explorer has stopped working problem.. but I found the solution first and I thought others might find it useful.

The Symptom: The "Windows Explorer has stopped working" message appears randomly. After some testing I found that opening a particular drive on my system would trigger the error after about 30 seconds.

Then I noticed in task manager that explorer.exe was using 25-50% CPU and my RAM usage started increasing. When it got to 75% the error message appeared.

The cause turned out to be a corrupt file entry.

I had to go to a CMD prompt. From there changing to the problem drive did not trigger the error. I copied the files to another drive then formatted the drive.

Then from a CMD prompt, and with an explorer window open for the problem drive I copied files back one at a time until the problem occured.

I couldn't delete the file from the problem drive, so once I identified the file I formatated the drive, deleted the bad file from the location I had copied it to and copied all other files back to the formatted drive.

Dont know if there is an easier way, was the only way I could fix it.. tried it in safe mode but the errors didn't occur in safe mode so there was lots of reboots.

If you have this error, the cause may be a corrupt file.

I am on WIndows 7 ultimate x64 with all latest patches installed.

Hope this helps someone....

Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working (Solution)

I have Windows Vista Ultimate Version x64 and Microsoft Office 2007. I've experienced horrible issues with IE explorer ver. 7 crashing, seemingly out of the blue.. I've reinstalled the OS several times.. and eventually the issue happened over and over again..

These are the two solutions I found which were able to solve the problem and partially restore my fractured sanity.

First and Easiest: Do a system restore | Control Panel, Right Click, Properties, system protection, System Restore from a previous time when you know for sure IE was working.. This wont stop future problems, but it will get you back on the internet so you can rush to this forum and find out how to permenantly solve it.. (below)

Second & Permenant: I found that Office 2007 Web Components appeared to be causing this issue. I tried repairing.. Still didnt work.. So I went into programs and just removed the component.. Rebooted and IE works fine..

Trouble Shooting Tips: If you can start ie without add-ons, then you should be able to resolve the issue with minimal effort. You can try it by following the instructions below..

Start -> Programs -> Assessories -> System Tools -> iExplorer (no add ons)

This problem cause me alot of pain and headache.. so I hope that by posting here it will help some folks cause I didnt see any clear paths to resolving this issue.

I've tried it all!

I have an "about:blank" hijacker which might be related to a trojan.

Yesterday night my antivirus (PC-cillin) discovered Troj Small.aab and quarantined it succesfully. However, today at 8pm it found it again but this time was unable to quarantine it. I have the latest virus defintions.
On the support page, users are instructed to also manually remove some entires from the registry, in order to kill the trojan completely. I followed the advice but was unable to find the specific registry entries in the keys, hence seems like the trojan hasn't altered the registry yet or something else might be the problem.

In addition to this, "about:blank" started appearing sometime during this afternoon. I have run AdAware (with latest defintions) which was able to find 6 processes and quarantine them. Nevertheless, they kept coming back. Done SpyBot as well, cleared some things up but obvioulsy not the important ones. In addtion to that, I did a Microsoft Spyware Beta check as well - that one reported the dreaded CoolWebSearc and Dynamic Desktop Media Trojan Downloader. Cleaned them but - you guessed it - hijacker's back!

Hijack This also reports suspicious stuff (for log, please see below) but after I clean the suspicious entries, the whole cycle repeats.

And there's more! After cleaning suspicious entries via Hijack This and restoring the home page to its original and starting IE, the page opens with no problems. If I start a... Read more

My touchpad stopped working after I had installed a usb mouse (and an IR remote).

I searched numerous forums and tried everything out there with no success, including the following:
tried the function key to turn touchpad on/off (the most obvious source of the problem)
tried reinstalling driver for touchpad from the manufacturer web site
removed the usb mouse and rebooted
went to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Mouse to enable touchpad - touchpad was no longer even listed
There were no problems showing up in the Device Manager

This all became a bit frustrating because I would have to reconnect the usb mouse to do any maneuvering around the system (since the touchpad was not working) to try something else.

I then tried the following: removed the usb mouse, turned off computer (used ctrl/alt/del, then tabbed to the shut down button), turned computer back on. The touchpad still did not work. Without doing anything else, and with the usb mouse still not connected, I then turned the computer back off, then on a second time - and the touchpad became functional. I plugged the usb mouse back in and both worked again at the same time. In the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Mouse - both the touchpad and mouse were now recognized.

Hope this helps out others with the same problem (this seems to be a fairly common problem based on the number of postings around the web)

Hi all. Just cloned my hard disk and everything copied.

I go to enter my username/password, hit enter, and then the splash screen appears. It says "Loading Personal Settings..." and then disappears. However, it is still loading as the splash screen color bar is still moving. Then, about 45 seconds later, it says "Saving Personal Settings..." and then "Logging off." It then proceeds to take me to back to the logon screen.

The Microsoft.com solution to the logon-logoff loop did NOT work. Any other suggestions?

My brother was having with his reliability monitor that stopped working 10/28/08. His os is Vista 64 Ultimate. Here is what worked to get his reliability monitor working again:

Go to control panel, click classic view, click administrative tools, then click event viewer. In the first column expand "Windows Logs" and click "System". In the 3rd column under "Actions", click "Clear Log", then "Clear and Save".

The center column had a "data is invalid (13)" error when he accessed the event viewer. After reading some posts, along with some trial and error, we finally got the above solution to solve his problem.

He noticed in a few minutes that it updated to 11/08. Then a little while later it was showing history to 12/08. By the next morning, his reliability monitor was updated to the current date of 03/14/09. All his previous data was saved and he has a fully functioning reliability monitor. I am happy to report that mine has been working fine for over a year. I just wanted to share the solution.

I hope this helps someone in the same situation...

"Windows 7 Update - Checking for Updates..."   that never ends.
I'm a IT guy and I factory re-install a lot of computers.   Now it is with out of the box new computers.
1. I was using  KB 3135445 and KB 3161664 and that worked for awhile it seems.
2. I've also stopped SERVICES.MSC, deleted what was in Windows\SoftwareDistributino, restarted SERVICES.MSC, no luck.
I have two out of the box Windows 7 Pro computers that I'm waiting to get on users desk but I need to patch the O/S first and then install our business software, anti-virus, and backup.
What is the solution to end all solutions to the maddening problem?

Thank you,

It all started that when I'm using my PC, the system is issuing an error saying that the display driver is not compatible, the pc's LED screen just randomly became pixelated then the displays turns to black, then back again to normal... so in my experience, I always update my drivers with driver pack solution. When It was at 40% installing updates including the recommended programs, the screen blinks (which is normal when installing other driver updates), at that moment, my keyboard and mouse is not working. Is it the USB port drivers that is the problem? or the Driver pack solution? I don't know how to fix this.

The great thing is, I can use the keyboard when booting. I can input the boot options, but I dont really know how this work.

It would be a great help if I can fix this. I don't want to try random things, maybe it would make it more terrible than it already is.
PLEASE HELP!!

Hi all,

I have Windows 7 professional and a minimal set of software installed.

I have pretty much exactly the same problem then the one posted here:
COM Surrogate Windows 7 64bit

I keep getting a "COM Surrogate has stopped working" error when viewing JPEGs with Windows Photo Viewer. This happens at random times when I view the photos. Sometimes it happens when I open the first image but mostly it is at some point when I change to the next picture.

Just as above problem wasn't solved, mine isn't either. I just wondered if anyone had a new idea.

Just to make sure:
I have seen the page at howtogeek.com and:I have no Nero or Divx
I tried to add dllhost.exe to the DEP exception but I get the message "you cannot set DEP attributes on 64-bit executables". I did this under Advanced Settings-> Performance tab: Settings->Data Execution Prevention->Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:->add.... Also I read somewhere that changing the DEP isn't the best solution for security.
I will probably have to try disabling thumbnails but this isn't the ideal solution. Also it didn't work for the person that posted the same problem a year ago.
I am not aware of any Windows 7 codec update (my Windows says there are no updates)

I have seen 'COM Surrogate has stopped working' - Microsoft AnswersI tried the "clean boot" and with everything disabled, the error still occurred.

First, make sure Windows files are as they should be:Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker up to three times to fix all errors with a restart in between each. Post back if it continues to show errors after a fourth run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations.
Also, do you have ANY codecs installed beyond what comes with Windows 7?
Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
When asked, save the display information in English.
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Create a new folder by right clicking in a blank area within the folder Errors.evtx is saved in. You could also click New Folder at the top of the directory under the directory path box.
Name the new folder Errors.
Place Errors.evtx and the LocaleMetaData folder into the new Errors folder.
Right click the Errors folder -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file here.

Hi guys

So the problem is that now that I have a new smart phone, I don't need to forward my hotmail emails to my gmail account. However, removing it from the list of forwarding addresses doesn't stop the email forwarding. Just for clarification, the route I took to disable the forwarding:

1. Options -> More options
2. Managing your account: Email forwarding
3. Delete the forwarding address, then click the "Don't forward" button
4. Save

I have no idea why it still forwards the emails. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It's not a huge inconvenience, I just get all my emails to my phone now as duplicates, which is annoying, and clearly this isn't how the system is supposed to work.

Any help will be much appreciated

If I understand you correctly you were forwarding from hotmail to gmail, then using the smart phone to log into gmail to collect the emails? Might the phone be pulling emails directly from hotmail?

You could probably use another program with your MP3 player such as WinAmp. As for your problem with Sonic Stage, have you uninstalled it, ran Ccleaner, reboot and reinstall? It may just be a corrupt installation of the program.

Hello everyone,

I have spent a lot of time looking for the solution to the problem quoted in the topic title and I know that some of you experience the same. As it appears in a couple of threads it makes it hard to post a response in each of them, so I will create a new one.
The problem usually occurs on computers running p2p programs or other software that creates many connections. The problem is a bug in ICS (internet connection sharing), you can read a discussion here :
Vista RTM can't open new socket. - MSDN Forums

If you don't want to read the whole discussion, you can just check this link containing the solution :
After you configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows Vista, the network connection stops working after one-to-two hours

Hope it helps
