Q: unable to drag and drop icons from desktop to an open window or open window to open w

I'm unable to drag and drop icons from desktop to an open window or open window to open window

what happens is when i hold down the left mouse button to drag an icon from the desktop to an open window

*** the cursor changes to a black circle with a diagonal line going through it (like the no smoking sign symbol)

what is causing this to happen?

thx rob
ps: ONLY copy/cut and paste works now

Preferred Solution: unable to drag and drop icons from desktop to an open window or open window to open w

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm using IE7
Until recently, I could drag a URL shortcut from my desktop and drop it on an open IE7 tabbed window to go to a new site. Now I get the "blocked" symbl on most windows but not on a new, empty tab.
Anybody know what setting controls this and how it could have gotten changed?

I am unable to open files by dragging and dropping onto icons on my desktop even though I am logged on as Administrator. I can still move, cut and paste. I also have an almost Identical PC nearby and that feature works it works no worries. Is there a setting to prevent this action occuring? I've searched but to no avail.

A:Unable to Open using Drag and Drop

What is the exact situation I don't really udnerstand what you mean by dragging the file. You mean that the program won't lauch by making a shortcut or are you trying to cut a .exe and bring it to you're desktop then launch it? Missing files?

Not sure what happened, but starting this afternoon, Explorer 9 (released version via automatic update) will not open a link in a new tab, nor will it open that line into a new explorer window.

Looked at multiple complaints and fixes for this, none worked (including the scripts).

What happened today: recent automatic windows 7 update to "allow further updates", I used firefox for the first time - note did not set it as the default, there was a java update and an adobe update.

This machine is windows 7 sp1, completely updated 64bit home premium system.

Turned off all the add ons, restarted - didn't fix it. Tried the script for the same problem, that didn't work. All the resetting has done, is removed the tool bars I like to use and it still doesn't work.

Would like to leave explorer 9 as the default, but this is driving me nuts. (already can't use it for some sites due to the way their developers coded page popups - use safari for those)

A:Unable to open link in new tab and won;t open new window

the new tab is blank, and it just flat out will not open a new window.

If I right mouse copy the short cut and paste it in, it works fine

This is a toughy to explain. I just started a new job and my PC is on XP. One of our applications does this. When I try to drag the window for this ONE application, the window bounces back to the original place...sometimes. Most of the time. My other coworkers are not on XP and they are not having this problem. But like I said, its just this one app.

A:trying to drag an open window and it bounces back

What application is it? Do your co-workers use the same application on different operating systems and when they drag the window it doesn't bounce back to the original place?

I have tried the 'outlook.exe/ resetnavpane' in the start search and then clicking on programme - it opens outlook but a completely new version with non of my contacts etc. Grateful for any ideas.

A user tries to download a PDF from a government site by selecting a checkbox for the document and hitting Download Document button. The file download box comes up with "Downloading file... Open/Save/Cancel". When she hits Open, the box dismisses and the download progress box appears. Almost immediately, however, the file download box reappears but this time Open is grayed out, forcing the user to save it before it will be downloaded and opened. On any other computer in the office, the file will open right up. I have checked the internet settings and they seem correct. What would cause this to happen just to this one user? Or, what can I do to fix it?

Hi All,

I am running Windows Vista Home edition and have Mozilla and Windows IE 8.0 installed. Whenever I start up the computer and turn on Mozilla, after a few minutes IE opens a window saying that it is unable to open the window "Favorit". It doesn't conect to the internet, even though it should be able to. This happened before and after I installed IE 8. I've run Symantec Virus Scan with 0 results. I've posted this before, but nobody has been able to fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm having trouble on my desktop, I'm currently using windows 7. I cannot run any programs on my computer including MBAM and Super anti spyware. When i attempt to open up a program such as MBAM, it opens up a view download window. I have the option to run or save the program; however, when i click run for example it quickly opens up an internet explorer page and closes it and nothing happens. I have access to the internet and everything but there is another big catch. This only happens on one user... The other user has no problems i can access all files, programs etc..

I've ran rkill but it says sed.exe cannot read C:\users\---\appdata\local\temp\rks1.log no such file or directory

I ran malwarebytes and removed 5 unwanted files

I've also ran superantispyware which removed about 120 tracker cookies.

Still having the same problem i don't know what else to do please help =/

The other day I noticed that all of the icons and previews (for images) were not showing when I am in a program and open a window for Save As../Open, etc. This happens in all programs. Attached is an example.

When I open the file location from within my computer all icons and previews work.

Things I have tried so far:

Control Panel>Advanced System Settings>Performance Settings - Made sure Show Thumbnails instead of icons is check.

Going through every folder and making sure in folder options that always show icons, never thumbnails was unchecked. I have tried numerous different scenarios.

I even went and installed custom icons. That is why it now shows some icons. Before it showed no icons at all.

I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to settings in windows and have been running Windows 7 since it came out. If anybody knows anything else I can try, please let me know.

You could try the following;

To fix this problem, follow these steps:
Close all open windows if a Close Open Programs Interaction dialog box is displayed.
Verify the Max Cached Icons registry value that locates in the following registry subkey equals to 4096:
Delete IconCache.db that locates in the following path:
Windows XP - %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data
Windows Vista or Windows 7 - %userprofile%\AppData\Local.

I noticed a few hours ago, after clicking a link in an e-mail I recieved (I use Outlook for mail reception), that I couldn't open Internet Explorer (version 6.0.2800 SP1) unless I opened it directly, either using the .lnk file on my desktop, or my shortcut bar, or opening an additional window via IE's File>New>Window menu. From what I've seen, something on my system is acting as a popup blocker, though I've never installed any program of that sort. I recently uninstalled Zonealarm from my computer, because it was causing problems with fullscreen programs I ran. It (Zonealarm) had gone screwy aside from that, the alert windows having lost their borders, the Command buttons having disappeared, and the list of "Remembered" programs constantly being reverted to whatever it was before it apparently screwed up. I have 2 security programs currently running, Trend Micro's Virus Scanner, PC-Cillin, and SoftForYou's Internet Filter, iProtectYou. I'm not sure whether or not it's related, but I haven't been able to install any recent Critical Updates from Microsoft. Every time I attempted to, the update program told me that the program hadn't passed Windows XP Logo Testing, and I should 'contact your computer administrator' (me). I disabled checking of Digital Driver Signing, to no effect. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading.

Hello. I have no idea what's wrong with my computer, so I am not sure what info is relevent. So I'll tell you everything. I downloaded itunes and then all of a sudden I noticed a virus, (no idea if its from itunes but I doubt it). There was a program digused as a windows program telling me that every application on my cpu had a virus. It told me there was something wrong with mcafee and I stupidly got rid of it. Next it said there was something wrong with firefox. That's when I knew it was a virus. My search engines were not working, task manager wouldn't work, system restore failed, and I couldn't download anything. So I started my cpu in safe mode with networking. I downloaded malware bytes, hijackthis, and ad aware bc they have all worked for me before. I used them all. I know I'm not supposed to delete everything in hijackthis, but I did. I restarted the computer and the virus was gone (as far as I know). But when I click on any desktop icon, an "open with" window appears. I have a C++ runtime error... when I try to enter "add/remove programs" I see "c:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found" and when I try to use task manager it says "task manager has been disabeled by your administrator". I restored everything I deleted with hijackthis, because I figured that I deleted something important. I had no luck with that. I used malwarebytes again. Everything works in safemode, everythin... Hi guys,

I'm on WinXP SP2 and yesterday for some reason IE7 started showing some abnormal behavior. If you click the add to favorites icon in the toolbar and then click Add to favorites, nothing happens. Yet if you right click on the webpage and do add to favorites it works. Also if you click a link that opens in a new window, nothing happens. If you right click on a link and do open in new window, nothing happens. If you right click and do open in a new tab, the new tab is created but it just stays on "Connecting..." and never loads the page. Firefox works correctly for all of these functions.

Also the explorer.exe process has been freezing when doing routine copying/pasting of files in Windows Explorer.

I figured it was some sort of spyware but Spybot didn't pick up anything and I didn't notice anything abnormal in my processes or startup. Any ideas?

There are two ways to do it. The first is to go to Internet Options >advanced and take the check out of "Reuse Windows for Launching Shortcuts"
The other is to create a new shortcut to internet explorer which opens the address. Here's an example. This opens This Forum in IE.

Here's an example: (everything is on one line)

Hello, In Windows Vista, it was possible to run an elevated Windows Explorer window. To do so, enable the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" check box, log off, and then log back on. After that, you can right-click the Windows Explorer shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." This no longer works in Windows 7. It is a legitimate need to occasionally run Windows Explorer elevated; for example, to register or unregister WSC (Windows script component files) or to run Windows scripts elevated. Can anyone comment on this limitation and whether it is a flaw or by design? Thanks! Bill Stewart

I have a Lenovo N580 laptop. Last week, I had to do a factory reset (with help from Lenovo Tech Support) because of compatibility problems with new software from my employer and windows 8.1 which is actually worse than windows 8. The compatibility problems caused my screen to go black. When booting, the Lenovo logo appeared and I had a cursor, but nothing else accept a black screen. I tried suggestions found here and the Lenovo help forum, but none worked and the factory reset was the last resort. Now I am back to using Windows 8 (this was actually the second factory reset due to other problems caused by win 8.1).

Anyway, everything is working (for now) and I also have Classic Shell installed. HOWEVER, before this second factory reset, when I had multiple windows open, aero peek worked fine. Now, it doesn't. I followed earlier suggestions of right clicking the taskbar, then clicking Properties, but the box for "Use Peek ..." is dimmed (grayed out) so I cannot check it to enable aero peek.

I got used to this feature in Win 7 and was glad to see it in Win 8, but it is the only feature about Win 8 and 8.1 that I like. Thanks for your help.

I would like to be able to open a new browser window in Firefox which would start at the identical location to the one that's open rather than opening at the home page.

In IE, File / New / Window works well for this purpose, and then if you wanted it to start at the Home Page, you could just run Explorer a second time.

It gives the flexibility of going off on other trails with the additional window, but still having the original window open. I'm not crazy about tabs which take up extra space in the browsing window. However, is there even a way to open a new tab at the same location as the current window? Maybe I'm missing the joy of tabs somehow and am stuck in my old way of thinking. Still, I would like to know if what I want is possible.

A:[SOLVED] Open new browse window at same location as current window

Hi I don't think that is an option but I understand what your after and this is the way I do it with keyboard short cuts of

Ctrl + C = copy (While holding down Ctrl tap the C key once)
Ctrl + V = paste
Ctrl + T = new tab
Ctrl + N = New page

OK starting with tabs which I think is the best thing since sliced bread. You have the page open that you want to start with go up to the URL at the top of the page (do it with this page) click only once on the URL this will highlight it or if you like to say select it.

Now to copy the URL Ctrl + C your computer will remember this link until you either copy something else or you shut down the computer.

Now we open a new tab Ctrl + T a new blank tab will open and the URL location is blank but with the cursor already in it so we paste the URL there by Ctrl + V and tap the enter key and you have the duplicate page

Now working with a new page there is just a couple of small differences.

You have the page open that you want to start with go up to the URL at the top of the page (once again do it with this page) click only once on the URL this will highlight it or if you like to say select it.

Now we open a new page with Ctrl + N a new page will open but the difference is it will not be blank it will be your home page so as there is already a URL that we want to get rid of. The simple way is to once again click on it only once to select it then paste the saved URL by Ctrl + V and tap the enter key and ... Read more

Whenever I search in W7, I want to have the ability to open found folders in a new window. If I r-click, that option is not there. Is there a way to add this to W7?

Also: When I go to 'open file location', the file's folder opens in the same window - highly annoying. In Vista, it opens in a new window. Anyway to change this behvior in W7 to act like Vista, so the file opens in a new window?

A:Adding 'open in new window' to search results, & opening in new window

assume this option was there on your windows 7 earlier? did you make any changes to your computer recently?

I'm obsessed with trying to figure out why my IE6 browser will not open a javascript window.open at http://pbgs.blogspot.com.

It seems others are able to open the Comment Window just fine, yet for me, when I click the comment link, I hear a "click" then nothing happens. (It is the same for the trackback link.)

At one point the webmaster at pbgs.blogspot.com had a Blogroll Me! link as well with a window.open command and I also could not get that to work for me either. (He has removed that in an attempt to isolate the issue with my browser, but that failed.)

I have adjusted all my cookie settings to allow for Haloscan and Pbgs. I have enabled all javascript. I have disabled firewall protection and set Norton to allow pop ups for Haloscan and Pbgs. At one point I even disabled Norton completely at Pbgs to see if that was an issue and apparantly not.

I am able to view Haloscan comments at other sites like mine

But not at sites like:

I think the issue has something to do with javascript and the window.open command and a compatibility issue with IE6, but I am not a techie so I don't know if this is in fact so.

I would like to resolve this issue and if anyone has any clue as to how, please let me know!

I just got a new laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit system.
When I open an email...it opens correctly, but when I want to double click for the next window to open, I have to have toRIGHT click that window and instruct Windows to "Open to new Window".

Is there any global command that can activate this procedure automatically.
Thank you

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010 and though I'm starting to get used to all the changes there is one thing which is really bugging me.

When I have two separate Excel windows open and open an Excel file from Windows Explorer the file will open in the first window not in the active Excel window. If I want to open a file in the second window I need to do it via Open.

Is there anyway of fixing this?

A:Open Excel workbook in active window rather than first window

When you open a xls-file in explorer both excel windows are inactive, so what do you mean?
