ThinkPad X1 5th gen fingerprint not working correctly ***ALSO laptop is getting HOT***

Q: ThinkPad X1 5th gen fingerprint not working correctly ***ALSO laptop is getting HOT***

I had an X 1 carbon 3rd gen that was a Lemon to say the least i had sent it back numerous times to get repaired and after the third time Lenovo was gracious enough to send me a X1 5th gen. It has worked very well for me up until the past week. Ive noticed that the laptop itself has been running verry hot. Hot to the point where it made me jump when i rested it on my bare leg. In addition the fingerprint reader intermitantly works i have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers i have run hardware scans i have tried everything and of CORSE my warantee is expired! i have no issue buying an extension but at this point i am very frustrated with how this laptop is turning out. i LOVE this laptop more then anything but i am extremely frustrated. has anyone else encountered issues with overheating and fingerprint reader?? any advice??

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi! I have recently purchased a Thinkpad L480 and the fingerprint reader only worked very breefly after setup. Now, whenever I try to setup my fingerprint in windows hello the device seems as it would recognize a fingerprint without a finger on the reader (reader is clean). The fingerprint setup assistant shows a short flashing of the fingerprint icon as it would recognize a finger and then continues with only painting the innermost line of the fingerprint red and stops to detect any input. As mentioned breefly after windows setup the fingerpringt scanner worked. After a relog the scanner stopped working. I tried deleting and setting up a new fingerprint, when the problem first occured. All drivers are up to date. The latest windows version is used. Thanks in advance!

I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen). The fingerprint sensor is not working and I don't have the option to sign in with my fingerprint. I bought the laptop around a year ago and the fingerprint sensor worked fine for the first few months, but stopped working recently.  Here are the symptoms:When setting up sign-in options, there is no fingerpring option in Windows HelloIn the device manager, there is no entry for "biometric sensor" or anything similarIn the bios, when I selected "reset fingerprint data", I get the response "no fingerprint reader is attached"I have tried a full re-install of Windows 10 and it did not change anything. Is anyone else having similar issues? Is this something I can fix through software or would I have to send it in for servicing? Thank!

A:Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd gen) Fingerprint not working

You're not alone, and unfortunately it's been identified as a hardware issue. The BIOS message that you got is actually being used as a confirmation that the problem is hardware, not software. See this thread.

The FP reader does not work on my T450s under Windows 10, even though the drivers "Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017)" are installed correctly.I can get into the Windows Hello Fingerprint Setup (snapshot below) but the FP reader doesn't do a thing.Following the steps suggested in Fingerprint-support-on-Windows-10-ThinkPad-T440-and-newer does not change anything. The notebook is brandnew and I didn't have Win 7 or 8 on it before for testing the FP reader, but the driver installed without any issues -- so I guess it's not a hardware problem. I'm happy for any suggestion.

Hi all, I have a Thinkpad  X1 Yoga 3rd Gen. WIndows Hello works fine with the camera, but I do not see any settings in the Windows Hello Settings app for configuring the Fingerprint reader. The device has a fingerprint reader. I am sure the fngerprint reader worked fine when I purchased the device. I performed a full device reset as I was having issues with battery performance (now cured), but the fingerprint option is still not available. Any thoughts?

The fingerprint sensor seems to have disappeared off my Thinkpad P51. I've tried to update drivers but when going into the device manager, there is not even a section for biometric devices where the fingerprint sensor would normally be. I checked under all other subcategories and none had anything that looked like a fingerprint sensor. Going into windows settings, under fingerprint sensor the message "We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with windows hello fingerprint" appears. I then checked BIOS and under fingerprint security settings, BIOS also does not see any fingerprint hardware installed on the device. Any suggestions? There has been no physical damage to the computer and no other indication as to why the hardware would stop working. Since it last worked, the light above the fingerprint scanner has not come on once either.

Suddenly my Thinkpad P51 fingerprint reader stopped working under Windows 10 (64-bit). It is gone in the Device Manager too. I have googled and tried everything possible (I/O ports are enabled in the BIOS, reinstalled latest fingerprint drivers from https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... etc.).I went to the BIOS and tried to reset fingerprint data. It showed (see attachment):No fingerprint reader is attached. I think it is a hardware issue. Any idea?

The fingerprint reader on my ThinkPad L380 suddendly stopped working. I tryed resetting the saved prints in Windows Hello but when trying to register them again the procedure stops at the second step: for the first step of the registration when I touch the sensor it is recognised, but for the second step when I touch it nothing happens. The driver is updated and the system does not register any problem. Is it possible that the fingerprint reader is physically broken?

A:Fingerprint reader stopped working (ThinkPad L380)

The circuitry might have failed.  I would first try to reset everything:

1) Turn off fingerprint option in windows hello
2) Boot into BIOS and erase fingerprints (under security menu)
3) Uninstall the fingerprint reader under the device manager
4)  Reboot and let it find new hardware

You would then need to re-register the fingerprints

If that doesn't work, I would assume a hardware problem

Hey,I've recently installed windows 7 on my t530 because in win10 I couldn't use fingerprint reader cz there's no suitable driver available. So back on windows 7 I installed all the latest drivers from lenovo support site. Fingerprint Reader works perfectly! Now I got like 180 Updates installed. After reboot my fingerprint reader didn't work anymore. I can open the fingerprint tool but the green led is not glowing anymore.in device manager everything is ok. latest driver installed, detected as biometric device.  also it's listed in system settings.I checked my BIOS settings and clicked on "reset fingerprint data" and also disabled the device and enabled it back.nothing seems to work.. is there any solution? Maybe windows blocked the driver or something i don't know. I've deinstalled the fingerprint software AND the driver in device manager. reboot, and installed all again. nothing.. how can this be?

Not sure if there is an official solution but heres my issue: After upgrading to Windows 1803, my fingerprint reader just stopped working with Windows Hello. Tried troubleshooting with drivers and eventually did a hard reset which did address the issue...only temporarily. I already looked into other forum post regarding deleting and reinstalling the fingerprint drivers as well as the Intel SGX drivers as well but those didn't seem to solve the issue. Any insight on the issue would be great!

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.

Yesterday I was messing around with my laptop and I removed the battery accidently while it was running. (Averatec 7100 laptop)

Now, whenever I turn on the computer it goes so far as the screen with the windows logo (loading screen not login screen) and then it flashes a blue screen and restarts. I think it is a problem with my operating system (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) but i'm not positive.

My laptop didn't come with a boot disk but I do have the serial number so I don't want to buy a new copy of xp just for the disk. If this is the solution to the problem, how can I obtain a boot disk for Media Center edition and is the solution running a repair command from the XP boot disk or is it more serious than that? Thanks!

have you tried starting the laptop in safe mode yet?
keep pressing f8 as the computer starts, and you should get the option to start in safe mode instead of the windows loading screen appearing.

Easier just to keep pressing f8 ratehr than trying to time it correctly.

I've been having issues with my laptop for almost a month now. I previously posted about this looking for assistance here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Wireless-and-Networking/Windows-10-Internet-Connectivity-Issue...I tried everything the Support Agent suggested, to no avail. In the end, I bought a Wifi USB, thinking my network adapter was broken. That wasn't the case, in fact, the software that came with the USB wouldn't even acknowledge its own existence. Then I tried Factory restoring my PC, I don't even care about my files I just want my laptop to work again. That also didn't work, every attempt has ended in an error message of some kind. Honestly, if you ask me "Have you tried this...?" At this point I think I could confidently respond without even knowing what you're going to say, "YES! I've tried that!" Still nothing has worked for me, and it's getting frustrating that literally nobody has been able to help me, nor has had this same unique problem. Please, anyone, offer me some advice if you can, I'm going crazy here.

I am convinced that the fingerprint reader is fine. There must be some issue with the driver perhaps, something incompatible with a recent Windows 7 software update? The scenario:Laptop working fine.  I put it to sleep when I'm done and use the mousepad to wake it up.  The fingerprint reader LED will blink, and I can swipe my finger to log on.At some point, after a few times of putting laptop to sleep and waking up, the fingerprint reader does not respond.  No blinking LED.  I swipe my finger and the reader does not respond at all -- doesn't even tell me that there was a bad read.If I log off and log back on again, no change. However, if I do a reboot, everything is fine--the fingerprint reader is working again.   I have looked up time and time again for new drivers and installed.  Nothing seems to affect this scenario.   Unfortunately, this started happening about 9 months ago (estimated) and because of the sporadic nature of it, I just wasn't observant enough to know the "precise point" in time when it started happening.  My instincts tell me that there has been some kind of software/driver update along the way that is causing the fingerprint reader not to work right.  I would hope that HP continues a relationship with these fingerprint reader companies and can convey these kinds of issues so that a software update can be made.  But... I have no idea if it has been discontinued.  My laptop is still under warra... Read more

A:Fingerprint reader often stops working after laptop wakes-up...

No problems, I completely got that I shouldn't bother with Simple Pass version 8.  I went ahead and installed version 6.  I still didn't get any joy, so I did a little more digging and found a later Validity Sensor driver, version 4.3.304 (not noted in the driver update list for my laptop model).  THIS WORKED.  I can now go into hibernate mode and the fingerprint reader remains funtional when the system is brought out of hibernation.  Previously it was pretty much guaranteed to become disabled.  So... seems like my problem is solved now.

I don't know if this a problem with my hardware or software of the laptop.

I've had this problem for months now.

It has to do with my SHIFT button. Every time I press it and press on another key, it acts as if it's a different command.

For example,

Shift + 1, which should give an exclamation mark, gives the command of Esc.

Shift + U, gives the command of Undo.

Shift + E gives the command of PageUp.

Shift + i gives the command of F11

Shift + _(underscore) adds a space before the underscore.

...... The list is longer.

It also affects other programs i use, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. In those programs, Shift + other keys act as commands such as F7, F8, Ctrl + t.
I don't know what to do, or what the problem is. My laptop is virus-free and has been for a long time.

Please, what can I do about this? How do I even begin to fix this?

thank you.

And without power, it sinks normally.     Problem 2I have a feeling my fingerprint scanner isn't working properly. Very often he doesn't recognize the print or I have to put 2 or 3 times on it. This can't be normal. Every mobile phone scanner works faster and more reliably here. Thank you for your help

I wasn't sure if this was the place for this but here goes.

when using the fingerprint scanner on a network with pasword changes every 90days, does the fingerprint scanner on a lenovo laptop synch properly with a newly updated password? I have a user here who changed the password but the fingerprint scanner did not seem to recognize the change since when you first set it up it asks for your current password. Once setup correctly all you have to do is scan your fingerprint and it logs you in.

Any info would be great.

Hi

I don't have that Thinkpad model, but for what I remember in some other model the Fingerprint reader was internally connected to an USB port.

You can check some programs like HWInfo and check where is the fingerprint reader plugged to see if Windows recognize there is a deviced plugged on it. It can also be interesting for you to grab the hardwareID to know the manufacturer of it.

Which Windows version are you using?
There is also some fingerprint drivers on the Yoga 260 support site for Win10 and Win7.
