Preferred Solution: activating windows

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got my Samsung Series 9 repaired and, as a result of some component changes, Windows 8 is no longer activated. Can I use a copy of Windows 8 Pro (which is intended to allow Windows 7, Vista and XP users to upgrade to Windows 8) to activate Windows 8? In other words, will the product key of an upgrade package allow me activate Windows 8, despite it not being an upgrade (my computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed).

A:Activating Windows 8

In this case your first point of contact should be Samsung Support, if you contact them and explain the situation they should organise activation of the pre-installed OS. Microsoft may be an option though pre-installed OS is officially the responsibility of the OEM.

It may be possible to "upgrade" using a retail copy of pro, but then of course you would lose the use of the pre-installed copy that you have already paid for

I have problem , I have 2 copies of Windows XP and recently have tried to update my Windows ME computer to XP I basically was having trouble with ME and wanted to have all three PCs on the same network using the same OS.

After wasting so many hours trying to get into Dos in Windows ME, I finally figured out how to format it and now I have installed Windows Xp. Everything went pretty smooth until I get to the Activation Screen.

I know have 30 days but I want to have this thing working now once and for all. I have tried to activate it over the phone but the automated system rejects the product key. I tried activating over the net and they tell me the same thing.

The product Key came with the disc. I am in the process of calling Microsoft but I was wondering if anyone knew what could be the problem here?

A:Activating Windows Xp

Do I understand that you have 2 copies of XP, but they are installed on 3 PC's?

Can't do that, every PC must have it's own licenced copy. It cannot be installed on more than one PC (or it fails activation).

However that may not be what you actually mean, it's hard to interpret exactly.

But if its a new, unused copy of XP that is failing activation then a phone call is needed.

Hello,

Last year I bought Dell...Last week lightening got it, taking with it my family tree that I've worked on for yrs...[ I had just reached a point to where I was going to back up my family tree but lightening got to it first] ...So I took the hard drive out just in case it survived and put it on an extra pc [which is not a Dell]...
The hard drive seems to be there because it shows my old wallpaper, but it keeps asking for my "Windows XP Activation Code" which I don't have...[maybe it was on the tower that I pitched after removing the hard drive]...
Is there a way I can get around activating so as to retrieve my family tree?

I changed a few settings in my BIOS (Aperture size form 128 to 256, AGP fast write off) and now I have to activate windows. I lost my key years ago along with the disc. Is there any way to activate windows or find out what my key is?

Also my computer is artifacting, and the heatsink on my graphics card is real hot. I have no idea why, it is factory overclocked so that might have something to do with it. It usually artifacts when I am playing games, which are usually set at or below the recommended settings. I have a BFG Tech 6800.

I am having a tad bit of a problem with computer, after a bit of hardware upgrades, I noticed that my Windows is no longer activated. And because I got the free upgrade from windows 7 to 10 with the whole update thingy, everything was dandy until now. I am not able to activate it, even though it says on my profile that I have Windows 10 pro on their website, but on my own settings, it says it unactive. So I rather not buy a new windows when I had one that worked before all this...and changing it back wont help any either now.

And here is my secondary question: Not having an activated windows, will this have an impact on how my computer handles programs? Because..it seemingly is!

My games are running smoother..ish...but it really acts up really quick with lag spikes and what not, even though my games are running smoother, and nothing was bad before the hardware upgrade.

PS: I have tried doing what Windows recommend doing when you have had a hardware change:
Settings -> Updates and Securtity -> Activate -> Troubleshoot -> I recently changed hardware on this machine -> (Opens up new window, Microsoft account) -> Reactivate Windows 10 (which finds my computer), and I click, this is the device I'm using -> Unable to acticate Windows, We can't reactive windows on this device. Try again later. You can also activate this device by going to the store andpurchasing a genuine copy of windows.

Hi People

I recently installed a new motherboard and I had to perform a repair install of Windows XP. Now I have to re-activate Windows. I am reminded of this every time I Reboot. However when I click Activate Windows my pc stops at the desktop wallpaper before the icons and taskbar show up. And it stays there and stays there forever until I reboot again.

If I click NO to 'do I want to activate Windows' and click the Windows Star at the bottom right of my taskbar I am directed to a webpage that tells me my copy of windows is not genuine.

I got my copy of Windows directly from Microsoft. I know for a fact it is genuine. So how can I fix this?

When I perform the operation below I don't have an 'activate windows' button on my copy of windows xp. Its not in accessories or anywhere.

Click Start.
Point to All Programs.
Click Activate Windows.

I was given this Sony Viao (VGN- FW373J) laptop. It originally had Vista on it, then windows 7 Ultimate was installed (not sure if upgraded or clean install). I wanted to install 10 on it so I did but I did the clean install....going off information stating that I could do a clean install and using the windows 7 Ultimate key would work and activate it. It doesn't....I get the error message that: "this device doesn't have a valid digital entitlement or product key. Error code: 0x803F7001"

It didn't come with any of the rescue discs and when trying to make them....message said that they had already been made. Which was really weird. So what do I do now?

XP checks for "points" on bootup and it looks at the hardware and CPU, and everything until it adds up 7 points. Then it boots. Anything less is a re-activate. You said you updated firmware for your ROMS. That may in effect make XP think the drives had changed. Normally, one drive at a time, nothing happens, but when you make 2 or more hardware changes, the XP wants to know why. Activation over the phone is easy. Just tell the person what you have done and they will give you an ungodly long number to enter. Like 42 digits. Nothing to it. Took me less than 3 minutes to do.

I just solved a huge issue with windows 7 installation Freezing before it finished...

Now I am having a issue Activating it Windows 7 Home Premium on this HP G61

Due to the fact that the tag on the bottom of the laptop is worn and unreadable in parts, before I re-installed windows, I used a Product Key Grabber to grab what I thought was my windows key...
(This turned out to be a key registered to an ASUS laptop)

So now I have a fresh installation that needs activation and a half-unreadable product key.

I've read that you can call Microsoft support to activate over the phone, so I called them...
they told me I would have to call HP to get it, since Windows was preloaded on the machine when it was purchased...
So I called HP, after like 15 of trying to understand the lady who was asking random questions, she tells me that I have to purchase an extended warranty for them to read the product key to me, WHICH IS RIDICULOUS.

So my question is, what the hell do I do with this now?
Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Activating Windows 7

Not too sure, but it's either buy an extended warranty or buy Windows 7 and use that product key.

But, don't quote me, just guessing here.

So my friend was using my computer (which did not have a 'genuine' windows, this is another problem) and he downloaded and installed some kind of software on my computer which was supposed to activate my windows. But a couple days later, when i turn on my computer it boots up normally up to the part where it is supposed to connect to the wifi. There is a spinning wheel above the wifi symbol, the security essentials is turned off and nothing i click on does anything. I tried to restored to a previous restore and nothing doing. I tried to removed the hackware in safemode, but the removed button becomes faded and nothing happens. I tried the repair system and again nothing. This sounds like the end of my hard drive. What do I do?

A:Activating windows

I do not know what your friend did but you do not need to download software to activate Windows. Those who do are typically attempting to use some type of crack or keygen program to circumvent Windows activation which is not only illegal but a security risk. Here's my situation:

Today I reinstalled windows because it was giving me problems, reinstalled some programs, recovered backed up documents etc. However, I still need to activate windows, but I can't. The product ID shown in my "System" panel is "invalid for activation," and when I try to change it, I cant do that either. I cant change it because (and I forgot to mention, I made this computer so its an OEM version of Vista) the product ID on the sticker that is supposed to go on your case is no longer valid because when I got a new motherboard, I had to call to activate windows. So I guess the question is, who do I call to get a new product ID, and what information do I need to tell them?

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio SVE15113ENB laptop. It had windows 7 before but last month I purchased Windows 8.1 upgrade key. But instead of upgrading I downloaded the iso and then did a clean install. I don?t know if the problem is only with sony vaio?s that if you dont follow the proper procedure not all driver install properly. The same has happened with me. The sound driver is installed but does very feeble sound. As the vaio has this xLoud volume booster, it hasnt installed properly. So my question is whether I could use the windows 8.1 key I purchased to install windows 8.

Hope to hear from the experts here.

Thank you

A:Activating Windows 8

If you want to downgrade to Windows 8.0. then no, the 8.1 key will not work.

Unless there is compelling evidence that the 8.0 drivers work better, perhaps it would be better try re-installing various driver versions, if not the the OS itself.

Two problems really.

1. Maybe I've never noticed it before but all of a sudden I keep seeing the popup for windows 8 activating again. Just seems strange that it would be trying to activate again even though it shows activated on 6/23/2013.

2. This problem is a little different. Different computer but activation problems again. My laptop for some reason last week kept asking me to reactivate over and over again. It would say successful and then I would go look and it was needing activation when I checked. It did this 4 or 5 times and it currently says activated. This one says activated 2/19/2013

These are both Windows 8 Enterprise from my MSDN.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Josh

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window (in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator)
At the Prompt, type

Licensingdiag.exe -report %userprofile%\desktop\report.txt -log %userprofile%\desktop\repfiles.cab

(note the spaces!)
two files will be put on your desktop -
open the 'report.txt' file in Notepad, and copy/paste the results to your response - you can ignore the repfiles.cab file for the moment, as it's only backup data

Yes you will need to purchase a license. Normally, licenses are not transferable to a new motherboard - unless the new motherboard is virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.) to the one on which the WinXP installation was originally performed.

OK. First I'll say what we did. I had an old computer in the attic. I told my buddy that it needed just a couple of parts and Windows and it would work great for him. We ordered a copy of Windows XP and today went down to get him a monitor and stuff. When we got home I put it all together and loaded my own copy of XP on it to see if it would work. It runs great and he took it home to get it set up. I told him it would work fine but we would have to wipe it clean again when his copy of XP got here. But would we?

I'm thinking that we could activate the loaded Windows with his license key over the phone without having to dump all the stuff on the hard drive again. The last time I did this over the phone, they simply asked for my key and then gave me a code to type into the activation form and the computer ran fine. I hope that's the case. It would simplify things.

A:Activating windows with a different license key.

Hi, The answer depends on the type of XP that your copy is...

And, it also depends partly on the type you ordered for your friend, because the Product keys are coded to correspond to various types of XP. If you are lucky enough, you ordered the same as what is on your CD.

If you could tell us for example, that your copy is XP Home Edition w/Service Pack 2, and is an OEM copy that you purchased or that came with the computer, that would help, and that it is a full version, not the Upgrade CD.

And, then you could check to see what you ordered and compare.

I took from your post that you did not go through the Activation (you chose to delay it.....) and that is OK, for up to 30 days as you probably already know.

Yes, you can switch to a new, legal and valid License or Product Key when it arrives....

Microsoft has a nice webpage tutorial about the whole process: Just including this MS for general info.

Well I acquired a legal copy of Windows XP Professional SP2 through my University. Installed it but when I try to log on it says I need to activate windows before i can use it.

So I go onto the activate windows thing and because it's a fresh install I can't activate it over the internet because my wireless thing isn't installed so I have to do it over the automated phone service.

Ok so here's the problem, it says I need to enter the Installation ID# shown on screen but there isn't one, not a trace.

I can get onto the computer in safe mode, so is there any way of by passing this activation?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Lee.

A:Solved: Activating Windows XP Pro SP2

Nevermind, I solved it. I added a new user account on safe mode then logged on with that. Didn't ask me to validate it so once I logged on I went onto the validate thing and the installation id showed up.

when I click on something I want to see in favorites it will not take me to the site I want. what do I do

A:activating favorites in windows 10

Hi, welcome to tenforums.

I need to know a bit more as this is not a problem I've seen yet.
1. Can you browse normally? (e.g. search and open sites)
2. Which browser are you using?
3. Can you right click on your favourite, scroll down and click on 'Properties', expand it so all text is visible, and then post a screenshot and cut and paste the URL shown into your response?
4. Is this a new problem - i.e. could you use favourites successfully before, and now not? If so, what change do you think has been made?

Thanks.

I cant currently activate my retail copy of windows 7 on my pc. I think it is because I have another harddrive I use to use as a laptop HD which I currently use in my desktop, that has the key activated on it. Would I have to deactivate my windows 7 key on my other hard drive in order to be able to activate it on my main hard drive

A:activating/deactivating windows.

You can't run the same installation Product Key on 2 computers. You can run the Retail version on a Replacement computer but would have to uninstall it from the first. And if Upgrading to a newer OS you have to keep the media and documentation for proof of having the previous version. My experience has been that you will have to contact Microsoft by phone to straighten it out, should have been a current phone number listed on the screen that came up when trying to activate.

I currently have the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 RC installed on my desktop. I am very happy with my current build and hope to keep it.

Does anyone know if there is a way to just activate my copy (legally, i don't mind paying) or something similarly simple to maintain my current build while making it a full install.

Any input would be very useful.

A:Activating Windows 7 in October

no the RC will eventually expire in 2010.

So I had to get a new mobo / cpu due to my board finally failing on me. I used a windows 7 upgrade (30 bucks since I'm a student promo thing), but now after doing a clean install of 7 on a new HDD because I didn't want to format my old drive, I can't activate windows because I did a clean install versus upgrading it.

Is there a solution to getting it to activate?

Thanks for the help in advanced.

I have a new Sony Vaio that came with Kaspary Security system - which has 13 days left. It is a Windows 8 Operating system. I know that Windows Defender is disabled - and want to enable it. I have done Windows start menu; Search for Windows Defender. Window appears on the Desktop indicating that it is not active - with no options. I have also done the Administrative Tools in Control Panel - to "activate" - and completed a restart. I still cannot activate Windows Defender. Do I have to Uninstall the Kaspary antivirus before I can activate Windows Defender? If yes, I assume I would do that through the control Panel - uninstall programs?
I am not an advanced computer user, however any help will be appreciated.

A:Activating Windows Defender

You are correct,...you must remove any 3rd party anti virus software from Programs and Features through the control panel before Windows Defender can be activated.

A:Error when activating windows 7 with OEM key

an OEM_SLP Key cannot be activated over the internet or by phone - it uses data from the manufacturer's Recovery media, and the BIOS to self-activate at every boot.

You MUST use the Key from the COA sticker (which MUST be for the same edition and version of Windows) if you use alternative media for a reinstall.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

Thats a retail licence, the code should be on the packaging you got when you bought it.

The code on the bottom of your laptop will only give you rights to the Vista OS, which is what your laptop was sold with.
