Only Firefox can view pages but can't view https at all

Q: Only Firefox can view pages but can't view https at all

Hey guys.

First of all let me apologize for putting this in the XP forum. I'm tired and frustrated after trying all day to fix this problem so I'm desperate now and figured I'd get a quicker reply here. Also not sure if it's exclusively a problem with my connection/browsers.

Okay so my problem is that out of the blue google chrome stopped viewing pages. I get "Error 102" when I try to view a page. The annoying thing is it appears that Chrome isn't even attempting to load anything it just instantly displays this error. It was working literally 5 minutes before this error first appeared. I was using Firefox at the same time (I have different passwords saved for different sites on different browsers) so I have no idea if viewing something on FF could of caused this.

What I've tried so far:

- Making sure I have "automatically detect settings" enabled in every browser while making sure "use a proxy" is disabled.

- Disabling all anti virus/firewall software and making sure Chrome is a trusted application.

- Uninstalling Chrome and reinstalling it

- Making sure nothing appears to be blocked router wise

- Checking and resetting hosts file

- Releasing and renewing IP

- Make sure SSL and T-something is enabled in browser settings

- Currently running a Malware scan with MalwareBytes but surely any malware would simply change my browsers proxy settings which I've already checked.

I can browse normal pages on Firefox but when I try to view HTTPS secure pages I get "Unable to display page" "Firefox was unable to establish a connection". Also when I try to update any software like Spyware Doctor it is unable to establish a connection. I can't log into facebook or my e-mail.

I had to sign up to these forums on my laptop which incidentally uses the same connection as my desktop so I guess the problem is exclusive to my desktop.

Thanks for any help guys.

Preferred Solution: Only Firefox can view pages but can't view https at all

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Only Firefox can view pages but can't view https at all

Would like to add that the Winsock fix hasn't fixed the problem.

I haven't been able to view secure pages on my pc for a week or so now. I have followed various suggestions found online like, clearing caches, ensuring ssl boxes are checked, uninstalled xp sp2 + norton, disabled firewalls; I am using ie6, but the same problem happens with mozilla and opera. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Aimee

Wow, okay, before anything, REINSTALL NORTON AND SP2!!!

I've never heard of those suggestions for fixing https problems. Well, I'll admit i haven't heard of many https problems, but i'm still gonna try to help.

Now, first of all, see if you are able to view the pages using an alternative browser such as FireFox or Opera.

If you ARE able to see https pages with those, then I have two suggestions:

-Ditch IE6. It's crap anyway.

-Check IE6's security settings.

If you cound NOT view https pages with either of those, then get back to me here.

Dear Experts,

My FireFox is unable to view SSL pages. Upon launching FireFox, the Alert box saying "Could not initialize the browser's security component..." appears. I have tried re-registering DLLs as what a different thread suggested, but still not working.

I deleted the cert8.db file in the default profile. The file is re-created whe FireFox restarts.

I've noticed lately I'm having more problems with Firefox. Some pages I try to view, like our local newspaper, just hang when I use Firefox. It doesn't happen with IE. It seems to involve loading some kind of graphic. The blue dots in the upper right corner just keep spinning and in the gray bar at the bottom of the browser page it says "Transferring data from catalog.video.syndication.msn.com", but it never finishes to say "Done." My system is using Windows 98se as an OS with an 800 MHz Pentium III processor with 256 MB RAM. Thanks in advance for any advice.

A:Why does Firefox hang when trying to view some Web pages?

Sometimes mine does that if there is a element on that page like Javascript or Flash that I don't have the right (or up to date) plug-in for.

I am posting from my wife's computer.

I was on my computer earlier, looking at web pages just fine. Then I decided to update AVG. It updates, asks for reboot, so I reboot. Now when I open Firefox or IE, its just a blank page. Tried different URL, blank page. Shut down firewall, blank page. Shut down AVG, blank page. Shut down firewall and AVG, blank page. I can load up and connect to my Ventrilo server just fine, but everything else is a no go. Also, sometime it will tell me the connection was reset while it was trying to send data. Once again, this started only after updating AVG and rebooting.

Any help is appreciated.

Ooops, forgot. I am on Windows XP, I am going through a router, but even connecting the ethernet cable directing to the modem didn't help, and my wife's computer has no problem going through the router or directly through the modem.

Help! For some reason, I cannot access certain web pages. It doesn't matter what browser I use or computer (I have a wireless broadband modem which has 2 computers connected to it - both computers have the same problem). I cannot download updates for anti virus or microsoft, but as you can see I am connected because I am on this forum! This started happening for no apparent reason and now I cannot access some really huge sites - (apple.com for one) and it is getting really frustrating. When I type in a web address one of 2 things happen: it takes about 5 minutes to load and then the screen says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage",
other times it takes about the same time and the site comes up as simple html (i think thats what its called) for all the links etc. At first I thought the sites were down but after a day or so it was all a bit coincidental and then other people were loading the pages just fine. If anyone could help that would be great!

A:Cannot view SOME web pages

I am going to do a little network diag to see what we can do for you here in this forum, but I might move this to the network forum.

Can you tell me what brand and model of wireless router you have? Do you have any computers connected via ethernet cable too?

I would like to know what happens when you enter this into terminal:
ipconfig /all
Also, I would like you to enter
Lets start there and then go from there.

I'm having a problem trying to view web pages. I can connect to the internet without a problem, and my instant messenger and mirc programs run correctly. However, when I open Internet Explorer or Firefox, every page I try to go to times out - EXCEPT for https://webmail.doc.state.vt.us, which is my work e-mail access site. That loads normally - but the rest of the net is shut out! Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Do you have antivirus software installed? Have you updated the AV software? Have you scanned for viruses?

Do you have anti-spyware software installed such as Ad Aware or Spybot? You probably want to scan for that too.

Hiya everyone, new user here and seeking some help for a problem my daughter has with her computer.

Everything was working fine one day, and the went to view web pages the next and cannot view either with IE or firefox.
Now saying that, when her computer first goes on she can view pages for about 5 minutes, and then she gets the white error page, like page cannot be found type.

She can still use msn with no problem at all, and when she first puts her computer on she accesses an online game we play, and can get into the chatroom there, where she has no problem staying, but to use the site itself (forums etc) she cannot use after the 5 minutes. Also her computer can only manage this when in safe mode, to do so in normal mode the computer just restarts itself.

Her computer is networked to mine, and she is running WXP Pro, I have ran anti-virus, ad-aware programs etc, which are bringing up absolutely nothing, so would be very greatful if anyone could offer some suggestions to what the problem may be, thank you in advance.

Hope I'm puting this thread in the correct forum .. this is not a connectivity problem.

I just recently moved, and had Comcast (xfinity) out to hook up my TV and internet. After an issue with my mouse not working, I finally got my computer working, and connected. I've been on the phone with Comcast support two times, and they verify that I am connected (as I can from my end as well) .. but IE nor FireFox can display a page!

This is a Dell Deminson desktop that is probably 7 to 8 years old, and hasn't been connected to the internet for probably 4 years .. though it still runs fine .. other then thjs issue of course. The IE version is an old one ... 6.0.2

Any ideas?

Have you also tried System Restore? If not, I'd do that first. Start > run: msconfig > launch System Restore

If System Restore is unavailable or has not worked, start by disabling or uninstalling any firewall you are using (other than the one integrated into XP).

Make sure you are not trying to connect through a proxy server.

The Winsock fix is usually a part of this, but also try the troubleshooting steps in this article:

Could be a number of reasons. I will suggest just one.

Had the problem 2 days ago after I had uninstalled 3 versions of Java,
intending to leave it off.

Went to a site, got the message you mentioned, saw the loading animation
before it bombed and recognised it as a Java feature.

Reinstalled Java version 6, Update 17 and hey presto.

If not applicable, hope you get other responses.

Here's my question.Win 2000,IE6,cant view web pages by name but can access them by IP address.Ran repair tool but didnt fix it.
Any suggestions?

A:cant view web pages

Do a File Search for a file called hosts

If you find one with NO extension (not Hosts.sam or lmhosts.sam), rename it ghosts and see if your problem disappears.

The hosts file is not active by default in Windows, but is used by 3rd party web accelerators, ad blockers, and others to preassociate Domain Names with IPs. When the IPs change you can no longer connect through the Domain Name.

I don't know if they are linked but I have noticed two problems since downloading IE 7. #1 - I can't view all sites and after investigating the properties of these pages, I found that they are HTML documents with Hyper Text Transfer Protocols. Not Encrypted and the address will end in .html or .htm. I have XP Home, CA Security and I just loaded IE 7 about 2 months ago. It seems like pages with cool interactive designs don't load. I only get the background.

How do I fix this so I can view the pages?

#2 - All of my files in Accessories/Entertainment are gone. It says that it is empty. I was wondering if there was a program that was missing that allowed viewing of HTML.

A:Cant view pages properly

"...there are just different things in the place where normal content should be." is a symptom of some rather intrusive spyware.

Sooo....download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).

My father in law recently lost everything due to Windows XP corruption, and he restored his laptop OS. This is where the problems begin...

When he's browsing, text sizes and such are messed up, and it appears he can't view the backgrounds in web pages. Pages appear just as text on a white page, broken by the occasional banner ad.

I have cleared out the cache. I have tried changing browsers between IE and Firefox. I have messed with various Internet Options in both Firefox and IE. I have reset the TCP/IP stack. I looked at his hosts file to isolate any bogus entries. I have used Windows Update and gave him IE 7, in hopes that this would sweep whatever bad settings there were away. All of this has not worked.

I am having a problem viewing web pages after connecting to the internet through a dial up modem. I have contacted my ISP and was told probably Spyware. I have installed Ad-Aware plus on my computer and I am still experiencing the same problem. When I enter an address such as "google", the blue bar appears at bottom of screen and then stops about 1/4 through. It then redirects to "mytotalsearch". What is going on? I am able to access my e-mail but nothing else. The screen comes back and says cannot view this page and at the bottom is says "Server cannot be accessed or DNS error". I am running Windows 2000 and Microsoft Internet Explorer. PLEASE HELP I AM VERY FRUSTRATED!!!!!

I am using XP and lately have been having difficulty viewing certain web sites (oarticulary Flash) and recieve a message saying my ActiveX settings prevent me from viewing it properly. I have messed around with the security in Internet options and restored them to their defaults, but to no avail. Any help would be cool.

Using ie7, I'm unable to view/see parts of webpages. I've reviewed all of my advanced internet options settings and still can't find the culprit.

Any ideas as to what's causing this and what the solution might be?

I've got a Tiny PC running Windows ME, and using the latest IE to browse the internet. Connection works fine, but everytime you try to view a web page, you get the standard page unavailable, and the url changes, so you get ?%20www.whatever.com

I've tried lots of different ISP's all with the same result. I've tried connecting using my laptop through the same phone line, using the same cables, and it works fine.

I've taken the machine to another house, connected it up, using the same cables, and it works, you can surf happily.

But as soon as the Tiny machine goes back to it's own house, you get this ?%20www on every page you visit.

So, it can't be the modem, because it works elsewhere, can't be the phone line, as my laptop works fine using the same phone line, can't be the cables, I've tested them.

Please help before I go insane!!

A:Unable to view any web pages

Hi welshowen,

Sounds strange that it only happens at home..

Could you please download 'Hijack This!' from http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/hijackthis.zip
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

This will give us a rundown of whatís going on in your PC. One of us here will be glad to analyse it for you. Donít fix anything yourself yet, as a lot of the stuff on that list will be harmless or required.

I've got a problem where after my computers been turned on for a while (the exact amount of time varies) web browsers become unable to open pages and the only way to rectify it is to reboot, however other programs using the internet continue working fine. I get the same problem no matter which browser I use. My computer's on a wireless lan which connects to the net through a bt voyager 2000 router, but this problem isn't affecting the other computers on the network.
I've tried running spybot and ad-ware, disabling the routers firewall and deleting temporary internet files but it's had no effect. The hijack this log also doesn't show anything suspicious.
I'm at a complete loss so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
