Slow running system and Hard drive constantly running

Q: Slow running system and Hard drive constantly running

Hey guys, I am running Vista on an AMD Phenom X4 9150e with 4gb ram. My hard drive is constantly running and chugging away pretty good too, reading rather than writing i believe. My cpu and memory usage are quite high and my system is running relatively slow for doing simple things like opening a browser. I have attached a screenshot of the system resource monitor with basically nothing running but hijack this and a browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have run scans with malware bytes and adaware, as well as AVG which all come up clean. My computer's hard drive seems to almost continually be in use. Soemtimes it is frenetic, while at other times the activity is slower, but constant. This can't be good for the drive, and it is clearly slowing down my pc. Even web browsing is slowed by this condition.

The activity continues unabated even if I haven't touched the keyborad or the mouse for hours. Rarely is the hard drive quiet.

I have pasted my system information from Belarc below, but will certainly provide whatever else is required.

Greetings all. Ive been having an issue with my PC and im hoping for some help.

This is a computer i built, and its been marvelous. It has a Core2Quad 2.4ghz, 4gb 667mhz ram and a 500gb Hdd.

My problem has been that the hard drive wont stop read/writing. Even after its been left alone over night, and for hours on end, ill look at it and it'll still be active. Its also extremely sluggish, even after a clean install of W7, which i know is because of the hard drive.

Im wondering if i can get a second, third or fouth opinion... but im thinking that the HDD might be bad and its time for a new one. Ive tried reinstalling windows, and its still slow to load, and take for-freaking-ever to boot.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop. I was running Vista and about 2 weeks ago I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. After the upgrade, things worked beautifully, but a few days ago my hard drive began running constantly and still is. Whether I leave it alone or am working on it does not seem to matter, yet system performance seems unaffected by it.

I am a novice computer user so straight forward instructions or explanations are more than welcome.

Thanks.

It always runs when the PC is booted unless your power settings are set to turn it off after some time.

This has happened each morning fro the last month. Thanks in advance.

Hello GreenKeyHomes and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

My guess is that either Windows Defender or Norton is doing a scan, thus the hard drive activity. If interupted, then it will simply restart when the system is rebooted. I would suggest that you post a question in the XP forum and let them do a little deeper analysis of what process is utilizing the CPU and taking up the bulk of the system resources at the time of the hard drive activity.

Cheers.

I've scrubbed for spyware, viruses and defragged. Now running Win XP SP2, 1 GB RAM, P4 3GHz CPU with Kerio Personal Firewall, NOD 32 and Sunbelt SpySweeper.

FWIW, the drive runs constantly, even at the DOS screen before loading Win XP Safe Mode (keeps running in Safe Mode); also runs at normal WinXP logon screen before entering password.

Odd thing, it seems to run apps comfortably fast. The CPU load seems quite low. I just can't figure out why the drive runs all the time. I've looked at the data from Sysinternals Filemon - virtually all the activity is the E: drive (SATA drive described above).

Any thoughts?

Hello, I have a Dell Dimension 4700, its about 4/5 years old. Running Windows XP home edition with Mcafee Total Protection. Been fine till now!

Back in July I reformated my hard drive (after backing it up in June), I had gotten a nasty virus and all my research said reformating was the best thing. So all was ok until about the end of August.

I have run the virus scan, I ran spybot, I have even gone to msconfig and disabled all start up items and it is still doing the constant running. Though I just looked at the start up items and CTFMON is checked again, I didn't enable it. I even tried a system restore and it fails for every date I have selected so far, can't remember when exactly it started doing this sometime shortly before Aug 25th

So while googling I found this site and the following old thread :http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/631281-solved-hard-drive-always-running.html

A moderator named CyberTech suggested downloading something called HJTInstall.exe

Would that be the thing to do and could someone walk me through the results?

Thanks!!!

My hard drive is always going full bore, and is driving me nuts. After taking a look at a couple other threads I saw that posting an HJT log can help diagnose the problem. Here is the log. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My wife is running Window XP Home Edition on an IBM TP600E, with a very small hard drive (4GB), of which there's about 600MB of space available. I'm not sure it's worth updating to a larger drive for a computer this old, but I guess I'm open to that option.

What I'm really wondering is, that when the laptop is idle or when you first launch a program, the laptop just seems to be "furiously searching" the hard drive, and is consequently very slow to respond initially. Granted, there's not a lot of hard disk space available, and I have de-fragmented the hard drive recently, but is there anything I need to be doing (or can do), to make the laptop more immediately responsive on demand - and reduce that constant hard drive "searching". I'll concede that the hard drive "searching" and the laptop initial responsiveness may be unrelated, but my spider sense is tingling - and tells me that they are.

A:Constantly Running Hard Drive - Searching, But For What?

I'd think first step should be pulling up the Task Manager and attempting to see what uses most CPU. If that doesn't help, in Task Manager go to View > Select Columns > check the checkboxes with names I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O Read Bytes and I/O Write Bytes and click OK. You'll get four more columns. Sort each column by highest value and see which process uses the HDD most.

I have attached a screenshot of the system resource monitor with basically nothing running but hijack this and a browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just installed two hard drives in my Windows xp64 machine and now the file system is running really slow. Like, if I open My Computer it takes forever to load. Anything I try to do takes a really long time. Even just highlighting drives takes a several seconds to register.

Stopped pretty much all non-essential applications from starting, but it doesn't seem to help.

I currently have five internal hard drives and two external drives totally around 2000GB. The only thing I can think is that the two new drives are SATA drives while all the others are EIDE. I don't see why that would cause problems, but I thought maybe.

Anyone have any ideas?

My roommate gave me his old computer that no longer worked due to a ton of viruses from a lot of random downloads. I took it in to a computer repair shop and they installed a new hard drive and said it should be working fine, now. It is definitely working and seems to be working well for the most part, but it's really slow. I have a ton of free disk space, so it shouldn't be that. I was just wondering, is it possible there's still viruses or anything that's keeping the computer running so slow?

A:Computer with new hard drive running really slow

If the shop removed the old hard drive, replaced it with a new in box hard drive, and installed the operating system from legitimate install media, applied the OS updates, updated all applications, and installed a reputable AV and antimalware programs,, then you shouldn't have an infection.  Can you give some system specs for the machine?  Processor, RAM, hard drive size, operating system, applications installed.

Hi folks

Here is the problem. Had a problem about 2 weeks ago and got help from PCForum. They had me come to this site for a program.

Computer worked for a few days and started slowing down. When trying to open pages in Mozilla, it sometimes will take several minutes.

The more I use the computer the slower it gets. The hard drive is always accessing and the wireless connection is always on (transmitting and receiving. Also, when I close Mozilla, it stays open in task manager and continued to grow. I finally shut it down when it topped 450K of mem. usage. I've never seen it over 150K before.

svshost. exe is open 8 times in task manager.

I have to manually disconnect my wireless to get the light to go off.

Any suggestions as to where to go from here?

Thanks

The hard drive on my system recently started running almost constantly after I log in. The result is that it is basically unusable. I was able to run HiJack this, but I can not get many other programs such as IE, Firefox and Itunes to even run (they eventually open but are frozen).

I can't think of any recent changes that might have caused this to happen.

So far, in investigating this issue, I ran SuperAntiSpyware, which did not find any threats (other than advertising tracking cookies). I also tried booting up in Safe Mode. Booting in Safe mode seemed to fix the problem, but the problem returns as soon as I boot normally.

So, in the hopes that someone can help me track down the nasty program that is causing my computer to behave like this, I have uploaded a Hijack This log.

Here are my system specs:

you have 6gb of ram installed, but you are using windows 32bit.. that could be one reason you running slow, as windows 32bit will only show 4gbs of ram.. you need windows 64bit to have windows use and show all your ram... swapping hard drives should not slow your system down... was it a brand new hard drive or a used one??

(Even lenovo laptop is 7th gen and Asus is 6th gen). Today I installed it back System interface and now when I backup (one key recovery). 9 hours is gone and the software say 6 more hours to complete the backup. Now if I remove it, it take only 1 hours 30 minutes to finish the backup. so it's performing 10% of what it perform without having system interface. Can someone from lenovo explain why they make garbage things like this. A:Fans running hi, system running slow

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
Click on Continue.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Looks fine other than missing an anti-virus program.

Hey, thanks in advance for your help. I just installed a second hard drive into my PC (because the external case i had it in wouldnt turn on all of a sudden) and pc started doing something weird. My PC was running SO SO SLOW, I coudln't get My COmputer to open, and it kept popping up to say that folder on my hard drive are "corrupt and unreadable". I restarted the PC, and that disc check thing started running (you know that thing you usually press any key to skip when you havent turned the PC off properly). Then it went through every file on my drive saying stuff like "Recovering Orphaned File" and "index error on $130". That has finnised now and windows has loaded, it's not telling me folders are corrupt, but i still can't get MY Compuer to open, and Windows is running rediculously slow. It's 5 mins for notepad to open. The start menu runs like normal, but everything else is rediculous.

Just to clarify, windows and all software is running of the original hard drive (40GB) not the new one (250GB)

I'm failry sure all the ribbon cables are connected. I paid particular attention to that. I can't partition and format the hard drive because I have vital information on it that I CAN NOT loose. I'm a 3rd year multimedia student, and all my assignemnts (on the drive) are due in 3 days. I THINK that the 40GB drive is FAT32 and the 250GB is NTFS, as far as I know. I'm running Windows XP Pro (originally came with W... Read more

A:URGENT HELP NEEDED! installed 2nd hard drive. PC running stupidly slow

To be honest, it doesn't sound good. I assume that the drive with the errors was the former external drive with your class assignments on it. Have you tried disconnecting the second drive and booting to Windows to see if it runs normally?

A:hard drive keep running ... no jobs running

hello ,

does the drive keep running if you have the internet disconneted from the pc ?

also follow these steps

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to sliptream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

--------------------------------------------

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

start

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & /)

now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask for this disc when it starts or during the scan( so you must sit with the pc while th... Read more

Please help me figure out what this is. Sometimes the hard drive just starts running and stays running for a couple of hours. This makes my laptop unuseable. I figured it was a program running but the taskmanager shows no applications running or processes that are causing this. One time when this happened I got a message all of a sudden that said Operating System Not Found. Shut down with power button and restarted. On restart the windows fixer came up which I used but no problems were found. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if I can provide more info that may help solve. Hi all,

I think I followed everything correctly to get you the requested logs and am in great hopes you can help me.

A little background, as requested. First off, my computer could be considered a "dinosaur" in computer terminology, but I rarely do anything other than check email, browse the web and do the occasional work from home.

It has been running fine for years. Never really noticed any lags or extreme slowness, I'm assuming it's due to my not doing a lot of "space consuming" things.

The only thing I want to mention is that anything "Tor" related such as the "Tor Browser" or Bitcoins, they are to do with an anonymous browser that I have on my computer and have had installed for weeks with no issues at all. I need them when doing work at home to ensure anonymity.

I also constantly run and keep updated Microsoft Security Essentials, just FYI

How much RAM does it have?

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

--------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

What are the names of the checked entries in Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab?

Hi my laptop is becoming a nightmare to use. It picks and chooses when it wants to work or constantly freeze. I'm finding that it is freezing a lot when I click on a new page and it says on the top bar 'not responding' then unfreezes maybe 60 seconds later. It just seems to be a lot slower now and i think its maybe because I have no idea about antiviruses etc and what the best software to gave is. I have MCafee and also the free version of Malwarebytes. I also have WinPatrol but only because it was recommended, I have no idea what it does or how to work it. I just want my laptop running fast again. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Here is all the desired information. I hope I have provided everything that is required. Thanks.

Have slight problem. Want to set upone of my own photos as desktop background.
Have a couple of my own photos saved in My Pictures, under My Documents.
Worked briefly. Now, when I boot up, my A drive runs constantly, until system comes
up completely. But, as soon as I click on anything on desk top, A drive starts running
again, apparently searching for needed background file?
How/where do I save my own photos for desktop background so that A drive isn't running all the time?

I'm running a Gateway 1GHz, 40GB HD, CDRW, Iomega Zip drive and Windows ME.
If I keep a Zip disk in, with photo I want on it, Drive A is quiet.
Problem began when I tried to change desktop background.

Appreciate any information!!

Please move to correct topic location if I posted under wrong topic!

Thanks

A:idle system process running constantly

The IDLE process is exactly that. A process that runs and consumes all of the CPU when their are no other processes requiring the processor.

That is, if you are doing nothing, this process should be in the area of 99%.

When there is activity, the sum of all the CPU consumption of all the active tasks PLUS that of the idle task should be 99-100%.
