Preferred Solution: programs show up in processes but not in applications

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

Most of my programs are not starting up correctly any more. They do appear in the list of processes after I try to start them from the start menu, but they do not show in the applications tab in Windows Task Manager. Also, no program window appears as well as no tray icon is shown. Resource Monitor shows the "stuck" apps with status 'suspended'.
I am only able to start these applications normally when I do run them with administrator privileges.

The last thing I was doing before these problems occured was using Debian 6.0 in a VirtualBox (v4.0.6). I immediately started VirtualBox after Windows logon and subsequently I could not open any other programs.
Now these problems persist even after several reboots and without VirtualBox running. I also already tried the repair function of Windows with no effect.

The only programs which still seem to work normally are VirtualBox, Internet Explorer 9 (64-bit), Avira AntiVir (v10.0.0.648) and the Snipping Tool.

When I try to run system tools like Reliability History, Network and Sharing Center, Windows Updates or even the Control Panel(!), I get a message box saying "There is not enough free memory to run this program. Exit one or more programs, and then try again.".
Resource monitor tells me I got 2.8GB of free memory, tho.

I was not able to find a similar thread or problem described, neither on these forums nor through google. Still I hope someone else has already experienced this and can help me fix it.

I'm not sure if this is a virus or if my computer is really just having some serious problems.

I am using a Compaq Presario v6000 running Windows XP Pro, sp3. I have recently (as in, in the last three months) done a complete reinstall of Windows ... these problems started within the past week.

I noticed the first time when I had had my computer on for some time ... maybe a few days in a row. This never used to happen before and now it happens even when my computer is on for less than 24 hours. I'm including hibernation time as "on" time; I often put my computer into hibernation when I am away from it. so I can keep what I am working on open to resume when I return to the computer. I clicked on my Chrome icon on the desktop to open the browser. Nothing happened; I have some mouse troubles so I thought I didn't click it. I ended up clicking on the icon half a dozen times, and the program itself never opened. I opened the task manager to see if it had opened a process -- and there were six of them. I tried terminating one of the running chrome.exe's but nothing happened. They stayed. I rebooted my computer and was told that Windows had recovered from a serious error, although googling the results of the EventLog dump didn't find me anything useful. I figured it was a one time issue. Now this morning I opened TweetDeck, which I had just been running last night, and my word processor RoughDraft, which I had also recently been running, and now b... Read more

I have been having problems with Media Center, not downloading the guide.  I have been trying to follow all of Microsoft's recommendations for a fix.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.  The advice told me to go into Services and find two files on the list and make sure they were both started:

Windows Media Center Receiver Service (was started), and
Windows Media Center Scheduler Service (wasn't started, I started it).
Then it told be to go to Show Processes from all Users.  And find six files on the list.  The instructions assumed the files would be there.  Only one of the files is.
How do I get the missing five files on the list?:

ehtray.exe (missing)

Microsoft's directions assumed that these files would all be there.  It did not say what to do if any were missing.

My computer is running slowly. I currently have 7 applications open, and over 50 processes running. cpu usage is at 7%, commit charge is 786/1228.

I made a new user (standard) on my Windows 7 and the program works fine. When I'm using my Admin user it doesn't work. The program worked fine on my Admin account all week and suddenly stopped working this morning.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, scan disk check, CCcleaned. Nothing seems to work.

The program is centrED UO, current verison 0.6.3, (map making software for old video game).

For the second time in the past week I have experienced an unexpected occurrence...

A bunch of hidden processes show up as applications via a couple dozen inactive windows. Both times, I only had Firefox & Excel open.

Probably not coincidentally, I switched my ISP from TW Cable to Verizon DSL about a week and a half ago.

I also hooked up the DirecTV to my computer using Win Media Player Network Sharing (note: with minimal effort, I was never able to actually view any video via the DirecTV).

Last time I had this problem, I just restarted, but now I'm getting a little concerned.

I'd guess I'd just like to know if anyone knows why this is happening, how to prevent it, and/or reassurance that this likely isn't related to hardware failure or a virus.

Here is a screenshow that displays the taskbar icons & task manager applications:

Hi. This might not be specifically a gaming problem, so sorry if it's in the wrong section.

I've had Starcraft 2 installed for a while, and recently was 'gifted' Left 4 Dead 2 through a Steam account, which I played a couple times with no problems.

For a few days now, neither of the 2 games will load. The Starcraft 2 update screen comes up, and it says that certain updates are being installed, but they don't actually install, and nothing happens.

Left 4 Dead 2 won't load either. I'm in the Steam account, and press 'Play'. A box comes up that says "Preparing to launch Left 4 Dead 2", it dissappears, and nothing happens.

With both of these games, after I've tried and failed to launch the game, if I go into task manager and look at processes, it will say Starcraft2.exe or Left4Dead2.exe is running, like they're running as background processes or something (under processes, but not under applications). If I try to press 'Play' Left 4 Dead 2 again, it alerts me that only 1 instance of Left 4 Dead 2 can run at a time. Also, at this time, a friend on Left 4 Dead 2 tells me it says I'm in the game, signed in.

Additional Info
I've tried running non-online games (Tomb Raider Underworld, Caesar IV) and they load up fine.

I've reinstalled Starcraft 2 but that didn't help.

Any help is appreciated, even if the problem can't be fixed but someone can tell me how to bring background processes to the foreground (if that is what's really happening). Thanks for reading.

Hi,

I'm not much of a PC gamer, nor am I familiar with Steam... but here's my two cents.

Assuming you do not need Steam to execute either of the games, assure that Steam or any game is in your start up processes [start > run > msconfig.exe > startup tab].
Restart the system. Click on the game's launcher or type in "game".exe and see if it loads.

Also, did you try to disable any process of a game that wasn't working and then try to restart the game process once again?

I'm using XP and though I've searched Windows Help & Support and Microsoft, I've not found a clear answer to the precise difference between the 2 tabs. I mean the Applications tab lists "running programs". Am I correct that "running" means "completely ready to go...operating"? And what's going on with the programs listed in the Processes tab?

Also, (and this may be a question or an administrator) In signing up and registering, I read something about being able to automatically add basic info about my O/S and my computer etc. to every post. I think it said to click on the aqua "User Panel" but when I got there the only way I saw to add that information appeared to be with my signature. Is that correct and if not, how do I add that info automatically.

Over the past couple months my Windows 10 machine has gotten picky about what applications it will run. For example, I just installed the program Bins (http://www.1upindustries.com/bins/), which is reputable, but when I attempt to start it nothing happens. When I check the task manager, it shows up, eating up between 7-9% of my CPU. If I attempt to start it again it creates another identical iteration of the program in the task manager. When I end the tasks, nothing happens.

When I run the programs as an administrator, nothing changes. When I run the program in compatibility mode, nothing changes.

While not all programs react this way, many do. I have tried disabling my anti-virus/exploit programs (HitmanPro.alert, MalwareBytes, and Bitdefender), and still the programs will not function.

In addition to Bins, I've experience this with:

- Saent (https://www.saent.com/)
- Ninja Download Manager (https://ninjadownloadmanager.com/)

and many others.

Does anyone know what's going on here? How might I fix this problem?

A:#1- 73 Processes, #2- desktop background won't show.

Vista will eat your RAM. In most cases, 2 gB is the minimum to get acceptable performance (although with a lot of work you'll be able to get Vista Home Basic to work with 1 gB).

Looking at your processes - you've got an awful lot of memory being consumed by McAfee products in several entries. I'd suggest dumping the McAfee for something that's a bit more considerate of your RAM.

Also, your Indexing service is taking a lot of memory, I'd suggest shutting that off. The same goes for the Epson service.

Firefox and MSPaint take their chunk also - exiting them when you're done will help to conserve the RAM

The svchost.exe process that's using 41,480 K is a concern, right click on it and select "Go to Service(s)". Once there, scroll up and down to see which services are highlighted and let us know what you find.

As for the second issue, have you made any changes to the system? Have you scanned for malware?

Hi there,
First, if this question is in the wrong place, please do point me to the right section.
If you take a look at the screenshots of task manager below, you'll notice something odd. I have a bunch of processes, all using 0% of the cpu. That makes sense, since the computer is not doing anything at the moment, so it should be 0. Then, if you take a look at the bottom of the frame, the total cpu use is shown as 9%, and that is shown again in the next screenshot. [as a note about the percent of cpu use: that is about the maximum amount a single threaded process can use on a 6-core processor with hyperthreading. That is like 1 [email protected] client running, if you are familiar, although there is no such client running].

So, my question: Where is the cpu use coming from? It starts up like this about two minutes after logging in, and continues like this indefinitely, every time. My computer has not always done this though (it started a few days ago), so I'm concerned. System information in the spec link thing.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

I don't know about other people, but for me this is a regular cause of irritation.

I'm using an application (Photoshop is just one of many examples) and I want to choose a file (say, to open it). The application brings up a file browser, but instead of My Computer appearing in the dialog box, allowing me to find all the drives and files on my computer, instead it only brings up the Desktop. Is there something strange about my computer or is this a common problem?

Generally the window will default open to desktop or my documents folder or sometimes the last place you navigated to the last time you used it
Why cant you just backup through folders or navigate to your desired folder with links down the side or navigation buttons across the top of explorer window

Okay... I'm on my last nerve here and really need some help. This is such a beat down and total pain in the *** that I cant seem to fix at all. Please read through the issues below and the recent hijackthis log I have provided. Any help is throughly welcome!

When I log into XP Pro 2002 SPk1 I get an error that says "Unable to authenticate symentec product error 1005.4" It wont run the antivirus, any of the system works applications, and it wont even load into the system tray.. The symentex web site told me to run a live update to update the product but I cant get the live update to work. Then they recomended uninstalling/reinstalling the software. I tried to do that and I get an error that the windows installer service could not be accessed...

Now the real problems begin. After everything loads up into my system tray. (Which takes FOREVER.. ZOneAlarm take about 2 min to activated and do it's job) Everytime I open FireFox, DreamWeaver, ColdFusionMX, IE, ect... it throws it onto the desktop and NOT into the taskbar where it belongs.... This is like working in Win 3.1... Not to mention all my qucik starts in my task bar disapperd but I got those back.. And to top it all off I CANT copy/cut and paste 98% of the content I use. edit: well, that was a quick fix. After I looked in the Start Menu properties to see if there were any settings there I could change, applications now show up fine.

Yesterday I was upgrading a friend's laptop from Vista to 7. Before installing 7, I wanted to take a backup of their user folder. Usually for this I'd just boot some Linux distro and copy the files to my server over NFS, however this laptop only had a Fast Ethernet port, so I decided to just attach their hard drive to my Windows 7 desktop and copy the files over to the server that way (the server doesn't support drive hot swapping).

When I mounted the drive it didn't show up in Explorer, so I changed its letter to A since D is assigned to a network and it showed up. Then when I went to copy the files from the attached drive, I found that I didn't have permission to access some user folders, so I used "Take Ownership" and was able to access everything.

Everything was fine with the backup, however today I noticed that my start menu no longer shows applications when I search. When I search, I only get files and control panel items. Confused, I checked my Start Menu folder in AppData, and all my application shortcuts were still there. I also check in the All Users Start Menu folder and again, all the application shortcuts are there.

Why would applications not be showing up in my Start Menu? I'm thinking I may have accidentally messed up my own user folder's permissions thinking I was in the folder I was... Read more

For example, if I use the show desktop button on bottom right of taskbar, it minimizes all windows. If I then open up one window, normally just that window opens, however if there was a fullscreen/borderless windowed application running as well, it will also restore that window. Any way to prevent this?

OK, I have a strange problem I have not been able to find mention of anywhere else. Basically, ever since I got my laptop, I have been able to just hit the start button on my keyboard and once the tile screen comes up, I just start typing the name of an application I want, and it automatically searches for it. Obviously, this is nothing new, and it is how Windows 8.1 is supposed to work. However, I updated the other day, and now suddenly almost none of my applications come up in searches anymore. They also don't show when I search on the app screen. Is this a known issue, or is this new? Does anyone know a solution to this? Thanks!

EDIT: I am not at all sure that the update is what caused this, but it was about the same time, so it may or may not be connected.

With UAC off, it seems to always show all users, but with UAC off I can't use my gadgets..

I just rebuilt this computer and it working basically ok now. heres the issue im having, when I go to add remove programs it only shows the stuff ive installed since the reload, not all the programs that were installed on the system previously. I think the registry is not right, is there any way the restore it or have windows rebuild it? or will all the programs need to be reinstalled, most of them still work, but some do not.

A:rebuilt system from backup, but programs dont show in add/remove programs

I dont know what sort of backup you did. When you reinstall the o/s
its like starting over. Your right about registry issues. Thing is, is that
when you install a program it inserts a special registry entry. When you
reinstall windows, it has no clue as to how to deal with that particular
entry, thus you need to reinstall. For games and other programs, if
you have saved folders, they might be salvaged. Smarter minds may
differ, maybe they will chime in....

Hi there,

This is my first post. This looks a good forum, I hope I can help.

Or maybe somebody could help me with the task manager.

In Xp when I used the task manger it told me how much CPU is being used. this was very helpful because if one particular process was taking up to much power I ended task.

Yet in Vista x32, even when the cpu is going at full pelt, it only register a few % on the odd program. Something is running, but I do not know what. This has been an ongoing problem for years, and I have installed and reinstalled, and run ant viuses and malware and root kits. Yet when running fully loaded, it never shows what is running, even when showing all users.

My laptop is a Dell inspiron 1720.

I would be grateful if somebody could shed so light on this upgrade from Xp.

Many thanks

Ceira

A:Task manager. Why does is show only a few processes running at low power?

Go to view in task manager and check the infomation that you want to see

For much better information, download process explorer from your search near start up button.

In task manger you have to check show all users, also.

I downloaded a bunch of game torrents yesterday from The Pirate Bay, ranging from Halo to Angry Birds. Each time I open the installer for any of these games (I've tried Angry Birds:Star Wars, Portal 1, and Halo 1), Windows acts as if it's loading something, and then goes back to normal, whether I run as an administrator or not. I have Win7 64-bit, 6 GB RAM, DirectX 11, an AMD Quad-Core 2.4GHz athlon II x4 610e processor, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series graphics card. I also used Steam to run Portal:First Slice, a free demo, and it ran fine. The only problem I can think of is that they aren't the Windows 7 versions? I can't imagine that would be a problem, though. I don't know, please help! P.S. Not sure which route would be the best to most effectively optimize my PC for gaming, so any suggestions are welcome. Keep in mind I'm on a Dell All-In-One PC, so components upgrades/additions might be a bit complicated. I plan on taking the games to school on a flash drive so I can try them during my computers class on the systems there.

When I download a program & install it, sometimes it will show up in the Add/Remove Programs list, sometimes it won't. Why is that? And how do I remove a program that doesn't show up in the list? Thanks.

A:Why Don't All Installed Programs Show Up In Add/Remove Programs List?

Depends how the application was written and what installer the author used.

If it does not show up in Add/Remove programs, it should have an "uninstall" file in the program's directory which would achieve the same thing.

Hello
I have an issue with IE 11.  I am running Win 8.1 x64.  All updates secured.  What has been happening is that during a session on the Internet, the top of the IE Window turns to an opaque white color.  Then I can't minimize or close the window but more troubling is there also seem to be increase in slowness and reactivity to commands.
I am running A/V with regularly updated patches.

Also, and not sure is it is related or not, but upon opening Process Explorer to find hints, as I hover over top hierarchy process, many have a 'Path: [Error Opening Process]' error attached to them such as the following:
csrrs.exe
smss.exe
wininit.exe
services.exe
WmiPrvSE.exe
nvvsvc.exe
nvxdsync.exe
WUDFHost.exe
dasHost.exe

I am at a loss as to what is going on exactly here.  Any help is appreciated.
Thank you

Today, I checked my hidden icons to check the Toshiba PC Health Monitor. When I opened the tray, there was an unfamiliar icon. I moused over it and it said 100%, and when it was opened it was Adobe Updater. I was worried, as I had never seen this program before. After a few searches, I founwd that there was a trojan Adobe Updater. I opened rkill (iexplore.exe). After I okay'd Avast to run in the sandbox, when iexplore opened, after the first messages of "preparing rkill" and "terminating malicious processes", a wall of text with "pestFind" and other information, such as the creator's name (rkill did work, but it only ended an Avast file). I thought it could have nothing to do with rkill, or Avast Sandbox, so I ran it two more times. Same thing, and no files ended for both. On the third try I got three errors stating "Installation failed", then rkill opened. I then went to Task Manager. Opening the file location took me to Program Files > Common Files > Adobe > Updater6, with 5 files, Adobe_Updater.exe, three security certificate files, AdobeAUM_rootCert, AdobeUpdate, and AdobeUpdater. There was also an .exe installer named AdobeUpdaterInstallManager. The fact that they were last modified 2 years ago, 1/8/09, lessened my worries. That is about the same time I downloaded Adobe Reader. Each of these files were scanned individualy by both Avast and Malwarebytes, and then the whole Adobe folder was scanned. No malicious file... A:Adobe Updater, pevFind, and processes that won't show the file location

csrss.exe and winlogon.exe are critical system processes. Their EXE files are located in the System32 folder. Malware does sometimes try to masquerade as one of these processes but if you have one each and only one each of these running then you can be certain that they are the real ones.Running rkill inside the Avast sandbox would prevent it from terminating other processes.Based on the info you've given I'd say there's no evidence of any infection. Have you been experiencing any unusual behavior or symptoms?PS:The built-in Windows Task Manager leaves a lot to be desired. I highly recommend using Process Explorer, which is made available for free by Microsoft. It would also be a very, very good idea to make sure that Adobe Reader is completely up to date. There are a lot of security exploits out there for older versions. Many people have ditched Adobe Reader altogether for alternative applications.
