I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried the recommendations for fixing this below:

Follow these steps to grant full permissions to the folder where the files are stored: 1. Right click on the folder on the external drive and click on
properties. 2. On the property window, click Security tab.
3. Now click on Edit and then click Add.
4. Now type everyone in the box and
click OK.

5. Then check Full control check box.

6. Click on Apply and then click OK.
You may also try the below mentioned steps:
1. Click on Start. 2. Go to Control Panel. 3. Select "SOUND". 4. Double click on speakers. 5. Click on advanced tab and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

But then I received the error message that I don't have rights to edit and add.  Why would this be?  I am the administrator?

A:Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

Please first take ownership of the folder or files, then give yourself full control permission.

I have one file that does not show up in the Documents Library. When I am using my notebook and look at the Documents Library, I can see all the files stored in Documents on my Desktop, which is where the files actually reside. There is one specific file thay does not show up. However I can see that file if I navigate to Users/UserName/Documents. Any ideas? I checked to make sure that file didn't have any permissions restrictions.

A problem has recently cropped up on my Windows 7 machine. When I open the "Documents" library, it does not show the combined view of My Documents and Public Documents. It shows a list of files, but no folders. Not all of my files are shown, just some of them. However, the file names are correctly linked, in that if I delete one, that file is deleted. If I "open file location" from the library, the correct folder opens.

I've included screen captures of the Documents, My Documents, and Public Documents libraries. You'll notice that I have a second hard drive (F where all of my documents are stored.

What happened? How do I fix this?

Hi All,

I've got a problem creating long named folders or files on a Linux network share.

I can see and log in to the share without any problems, but if I try to create a folder that is longer than 8 characters, I get the following error message:
The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters: \ / : , ; * ? < > |

Also, I can not see files on the share that have long names...

I only have this problem when I use my Windows 7 machine. XP and Ubuntu work just fine.

I am using Windows 7 Professional.

A:Malicious Code Found In File

The infected RP***\A00*****.exe file(s) is in the System Volume Information Folder (SVI) which is a part of System Restore. This is the feature that allows you to set points in time to roll back your computer to a clean working state. The SVI folder is protected by permissions that only allow the system to have access and is hidden by default unless you have reconfigured Windows to show it. System Restore will back up the good as well as the bad files so when malware is present on the system it gets included in any restore points as an A00***** file. When you scan your system with anti-virus or anti-malware tools, you may receive an alert or notification that a virus was found in the SVI folder (System Restore points) but the anti-virus software was unable to remove it. Since the SVI folder is a protected directory, most scanning tools cannot access it to disinfect or delete these files. If not removed, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. To remove these file(s), the easiest thing to do is Create a New Restore Point to enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state and use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recent restore point. However, since System Restore is not working, you need to get that fixed. If System Restore is not working, check to make sure it is started and set to automatic.Go to Start > Run and type: services.mscLocate the System Restore Service and double-click it. Hello all. My internet explore has shut down displaying an error in the wscmp.dll file. I did an online search and have found that this is a sign of malicious files. I also keep recieving a message stating that...

"This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM."

It has a :60 timer and shuts down after the time has elapsed. I am not sure if the two are related.

I have tried to run the latest malware fix tool from Microsoft, but the tool shuts down on the same file everytime and the scan is not completed. This occurs even in Safe Mode.

Also, winupdate.exe and ieupdates.exe encounter an error when windows starts. Upon research I have found these are bad .exe files and I would very much like to get rid of them. Any help on any of these problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For the past few days, while surfing the net, I have gotten 404 File Not Found pages. Not the normal kind, these are made to look like they are coming from Google. Moreover, I am getting them in places where I know I shouldn't. For example, I got one while surfing this board. Usually, if I hit refresh or go back and try the link again, the page comes up--eventually.

I get this page regardless of which browser I am using. I've got IE 7.0 and FF 2.0 installed.

Actions taken so far:
I have scanned my computer with the following programs:
Symantic Anti Virus
Bit Defender
Spybot Search and Destroy
Pest Patrol.

None of these programs found anything aside from a few cookies.

So color me stumped.

I am using windows 7 with office 2010.

I am trying to use the text in an adjacent cell, a movie title, search a folder to find a shortcut to that movie title, and have it appear next to the title. I have been searching using Google, using small precise search terms such as "excel macro file" or "excel macro search for file". I have gotten kind of close to what I'm looking for, but not quite there.

Hopefully the code below will give the reader of this post a better idea of what I'm trying to do. I was initially thinking a search routine, but then realized that the path was always the same (all of these shortcuts are in the same folder), so why not just copy the text from the adjacent cell and "build" my own link. That's what the following routine does and it does work ... provided all the movies are the same format, i.e., .wmv, .avi, .mkv, etc., which they are not. As a result the only two choices I have would be to convert all the movies to the same format, which would take for ever, or use a search routine, which I haven't mastered, and where I need some help.
Here is the build your own link routine:

Dim Hold As String
' Macro1 Macro

Dim wsM As Worksheet, wsA As Worksheet
Dim isPresent As Boolean

Hello All -

I've been around here a couple of time in the last couple of years with my Vista machine and you all always seem to have the answers for me. So here I go again.

Now I'm sure there is a simple fix for this, but I can't seem to find it. ....

I happen to have two files now that I can NOT delete. I keep getting the message;

Could not find this item

This is no longer lacated in C:\Users\RoyBoy\Favorites.
Verify the item's location and try again.
Now, you know I'm looking right at the file (both in Window Explore - the shortcut, and in it's file location) and the item is there. What's the deal! I'll tell you that these are both Favorite Folders file types and they both have files that I'm trying to delete. You see, I tuned up all me favorites & reorganized things alittle and I did this with Chrome. BTW Then, wanting to sync those newly organized favorites to my Favorite Folder, I created a folder caller "Bookmarks Old" and moved all the old favorites into that folder. I opened IE8 and imported the the exported file from chrome and thus repopulated my Favorite folder. Now wanting to delete that "Bookmarks Old" and it will not let me.

Come on - there has got to be a simple fix for this. Please don't even go to the 'complete re-install' line

Thanks All!
(was just one -been around for a week or so, then just today another one is acting the same way)

The server service won't start on either. Both say that the server files can't be found. All the dll files are present in system 32 . Start up set to automatic. Executable paths are correct (C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs), Log on as local system account, dependency is ok with computer browser there.
Have done a windows file check and no problems.

Please help ??? This is driving me nuts (well more nuts). I am a computer idiot but try hard so please have mercy.

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to say that this seems like a swell enough forum as is and I am frankly out of ideas. About a year ago I had backed up a rather large series of files under one name for my roommate who was in the process of doing some "spring cleaning" on his computer. Fast forward to now and he is out of Hard-drive space damn near and has been unable to find the reserve file himself. Below is the directory under which I named and saved the around 200gb file of games and old-ROTC documents. Regardless the file needs to be found and even after un-hiding all files from the control panel, I have yet been able to locate it. It would seem to be simple enough, one would think that you could see the file name sitting above Program Files but it is not. Any one have any ideas, we would rather not have to reformat/ system restore if we can avoid it.

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I saw your post right after you made it but I did not post a reply because:
1) Real life got in the way
2) I'm not sure that I understand your issue.
I'm not picking at your English, but this is important:

Your post mentioned, "another file is opens with that".

I'm guessing that you meant:
...another file is opened with that
...another file opens with that

Either way, the word open is really important to the description of your problem.

Let's just talk about Word for now.

When you open a Word, one or more temporary files may be created. This is normal and desired; but those temp file(s) should not automatically open in Word.

Please try this:
Close all copies of Word.
Open Windows (file) Explorer.
Double click on an existing Word document.

How many windows do you have open for the Word program?
(Hopefully, just one.)

How many files do you have open in the Word program?
(Hopefully, just one.)

Are you seeing this file that bothers when you look at Word or when you look at Windows (file) Explorer?

Please show us what you see and where you see it.

I just have to empty a SD card; compressing its contents to a 7zip-file takes too much time, and if I have to access the files quickly, I prefer to use a mountable filetype. Thus the requirement to quickly create a VHDX-file, then mount it using the context
Tested using Windows 8.1 without Hyper-V-Role installed.
First, you need to create an empty vhdx-File as a template.
You already have to specify the maximum size this vhdx is allowed to expand to, in my case 255 GiB (255 GiB × 1024 MiB/GiB = 261120 MiB). This can be placed in either your user profile or shared for all users:

Current User: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\All Users: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\
To create the template:
1. Start an elevated command prompt
2. Run diskpart.exe
3. Enter the following commands:
create vdisk file=C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx type=expandable maximum=261120
attach vdisk
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs label="Blank Virtual Disk" quick
assign letter=z
detach vdisk
4. Once the template is in place, just run this command:
reg.exe add HKCR\.vhdx\Windows.VhdFile\ShellNew /f /v FileName /t REG_SZ /d Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx
Now you just have to right-click in any file explorer window, also on remote network shares, select New > Hard Disk Image File and rename the file as you wish!

OK, something a bit different.

Background: Recently re-installed Vista on fresh hard disk following a drive failure.
Now: Re-configuring multiple user accounts from scratch to keep everything nice and clean.
My wife's user account wallpaper on old drive was set to an image file that we had downloaded.
Now I can't find it! (and it was important to her.)

I'm sure the image is stored on the complete hard disk backup we were able to take, but I can't remember the filename (nor, of course, where we wrote it!)
So I was hoping someone from BC would be able to point me towards a file (in the backup) which stores the wallpaper filename.
(Or a likely place for writing a wallpaper file, other than C:\windows\web\wallpapers )

A:'Lost' wallpaper image file -- where is setting stored?

Well ... You evidently already know where the default background images are stored. But a custom image that you downloaded sometime in the past could be stored almost anywhere. I would start with the Start menu, and select Documents. If you don't find it there move to the Pictures folder. If you still can't locate it, try the Search feature. It would be easier if you remembered the name or part of it but start your search with *.jpg or *.gif and you'll catch most of them. A little advance warning though, you may have quite a few images stored on the unit.

why is my user file stored in TEMP instead of the name of the user account?

A:User file stored in a folder called TEMP?

Hi found this for you to look at hope it helps;

The system creates a user profile the first time that a user logs on to a computer. At subsequent logons, the system loads the user's profile, and then other system components configure the user's environment according to the information in the profile.
Types of User Profiles

Following are the types of user profiles available in Windows 2000/Windows XP/Windows Server 2003:
Local User Profiles. A local user profile is created the first time that a user logs on to a computer. The profile is stored on the computer's local hard disk. Changes made to the local user profile are specific to the user and to the computer on which the changes are made.
Roaming User Profiles. A roaming user profile is a copy of the local profile that is copied to, and stored on, a server share. This profile is downloaded to any computer that a user logs onto on a network. Changes made to a roaming user profile are synchronized with the server copy of the profile when the user logs off. The advantage of roaming user profiles is that users do not need to create a profile on each computer they use on a network.
Mandatory User Profiles. A mandatory user profile is a type of profile that administrators can use to specify settings for users. Only system administrators can make changes to mandatory user profiles. Changes made by users to desktop settings are lost when the user logs off.
Temporary User Profiles. A temporary profile is issued ea... Read more

Here's the story

Recenty, I sent my laptop to a computer shop to repair my laptop.
After I got it back, it seems that my "Action Center" is turned off, "Firewall" is at off and my "Windows Update" is turned off.
Then I quickly install "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" & "BitDefender Anti-Virus" and turned on all those stuff which is at off mode.
After running "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" I got this

My question is

- Is it safe to delete them?
- Is "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" & "BitDefender Anti-Virus" enough to protect my laptop?

I downloaded a PDF file a few minutes ago. I was already wary of this file, and decided to play it safe and run it sandboxed. I downloaded it and went to the directory.. This is where it went wrong. I accidentaly double clicked it and ran the file.

As expected, nothing (not even adobe pdf reader) opened up . I knew I was in big trouble. I decided to run the file sandboxed and see what changes it made to my machine.

In C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache it created a file called 'QUNDRVNTX0NIRUNL.slc'.
In User\Current\AppData\Local\Temp it created a file called amt3. It seemed like some sort of a log. I have included it in the attachments below.

It also created a multitude of registry files. I took a screen shot of them;

I tried running regedit and searching for those files, but to no avail. I found a suspicous program in the startup programs in RegEdit called (Default)-it had no value. I tried doing a system restore to a few days back and I don't think it resolved anything. Here is the DDS log;

A:can't open a BKF file stored on a removalable mighty drive stick

Usually they can only be opened with the same program that created it.

Some backup files cannot be "browsed", they can only be restored to the original system.

I'm a consultant, with a client that received an email with a suspicious link. I was able to download the html file from the redirected site without running it, and took a look at it in a text editor. It's obviously specially crafted, but it's beyond my ability to decipher. Could anyone interpret the file to figure out what the payload is supposed to be?

It's a 191K file, and I'm not sure how best to attach it. If someone could let me know, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Charlie T.
