I have had this laptop for a few months now. I am planning to upgrade the processor. I'm really just looking for a fan/heatsink to combat it's insane heat. I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have installed verison 7.2.9.1 of the Ericsson F5521GW WWAN card on my system, and it shows up in device manager as it should, but shows a yellow exclaimation mark and reports a Code 10 error, device cannot start. No matter what driver I have tried, whether it be from Lenovo or Toshiba, or a generic one, I absolutely cannot get this card to work in Windows 7. However, in both Ubuntu, and Mac OSX High Sierra, the WWAN card works right out of the box on this system. Anyone have any ideas?

At BIOS start the bluetooth visual ICON under the display is flashing, meaning that BIOS is recognizing bluetooth. thanks in advance for further thoughts.

Hi,I have this weird problem with my battery indicator. It doesn't work, shows gray battery and three dashes inside instead of the remaining time. The system (Windows 7) built-in indicator works properly however. When I open the Power Manager, it shows some random, impossibly high number of watts used. Each time I open the power manager, the value is completely different.  I haven't installed/updated anything recently, yet a few days ago when I've started the system, the battery indicator stopped working. Restarting the system doesn't help. What do I do now?

For six months or so, I've had a problem where my laptop's audio will stop working. The red "X" appears over the volume icon in the system tray and audio will not function whatsoever. Until now, rebooting has been 99% successful at restoring the audio until it eventually fails again. But in the last three days, my normal quick fix no longer does the trick. Apparently my laptop can no longer find the actual Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD hardware on the motherboard. This is a T520 laptop running Win 7 with SP1. The T520 is roughly six years old, so I realize the hardware's age might be a factor. There are definitely other issues related to its age (general performance sluggishness, inability to wake up from sleep mode, backup no longer works correctly) and I will eventually have to replace the laptop. But in the meantime, solving this persistent audio issue will buy me at least a few more months, so it's worth fixing to me. I've found dozens of threads that suggest reinstalling the device drivers, which of course I have tried several times using the drivers here. The problem: After rebooting, the device manager still doesn't list any playback device ("No audio devices are installed") even with both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked. Similarly, when I run the 8aad14ww.exe device installer, it terminates with an error message ("Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver").  Has the hardware itself ac... The only way to get the T520 back again is to reboot. Its like it doesnt know the session has ended on it?? Is there any settings i can change to stop this behaviour? Thanks in advance

I am looking at replacements for my T520 running Win 7 Pro, since support ends. I find adverts for refurb T520s running Win 10 selling for 500-700 USD.!! I have read the posts on this forum noting the many problems updating the T520 to Win 10, and everything I find says this model doesn't support Win 10. What gives? The only reason I would buy a new laptop is because of the Win 7 Pro EOS. The Tx20 is the last series to have a "real" keyboard, so is there new info on this?

I'm having trouble flashing the BIOS on a T520 using the Windows flashing package. It keeps blue-screen-ing, so I downloaded the CD image, thinking I could use Etcher or Rufus to make a bootable USB drive. Both of these programs balk at the ISO, however, claiming that it is not bootable. Etcher allowed me to put it on a USB flash drive anyway, but the system won't boot from it. I'm all for burning the image to CD except I haven't had blank CD-Rs lying around in ages. I'm sure I can find one somewhere, but in the meantime is there any way to make this image work on a USB flash drive?

Hi all. I have ThinkPad T520, and I wanted a USB 3.0 port. I found out that there is a dock station 4338-35 which has one. I was naive enough to believe that the docking station has its own USB 3.0 controller, so I've bought it. So yep, now I have lots of USB 2.0 ports, and no USB 3.0 port, because my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 controller. Awful sad. How naive. Let me be a bit more naive and ask: is it possible to upgrade T520 somehow, and get USB 3.0 controller on it? Or, is USB controller built into the chipset so it's not possible? Thanks.

My T520 has started to exhibit a very weird behaviour: after a few minutes turned on it just suddenly restarts. After that sometimes it goes up correctly but most of the times the power button turns on for 0.5 seconds and then turns off again and it turns on again after 3 seconds and turns off after 0.5 seconds never booting up. I have to remove all battery and ac power and wait a bit to turn it on. Sometimes it stays on for a few minutes, sometimes for 1 hour...  The restart seems to be hardware related because I can also get the restarts when I was browsing the BIOS normally, so it doesn't seem to be software, windows or virus related. 2 months ago I opened open the laptop and changed the thermal paste of the CPU and GPU and temperatures lowered down quite a lot. 1 month ago the fingerprint reader stopped working so I opened the laptop again to disconnect it.  I tried only using battery power and it's the same. I tried removing the battery and only using A/C power and it's the same. I ran lenovo memory tests and it came back OK. Right now I'm lost on what can I try or what can be wrong with this. Any tips what may be wrong?  should I change the motherboard or cpu or what?

I have a T520. Three years ago (2015), I set up a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu so that my wife could use the Linux side for her classwork, and the Windows side for gaming. She no longer needs the Ubuntu side, and we want the entire hard drive to be used up by Windows 7.She deleted the Ubuntu partition using the Windows Disk Management tool. This caused the computer to stop booting properly, leading us to what seemed like a terminal that said something like "grub rescue". We resolved this using the second option in the below link (using boot-repair).https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-RepairNow, Windows 7 will boot, and the partition that used to have Ubuntu is listed as Free Space in the Disk Management tool. We cannot extend the Windows 7 partition because the recovery partition is between it and the Free Space. This brings me to the issue: I would like to reinstall Windows 7 and take up all of the available space, no Ubuntu.Several sites list something like "press this button during startup to load Rescue and Recovery." Usually it's F11, sometimes it's the blue button. Two examples are linked below. This is the 3rd time I've attempted a reinstall of Windows 7 x64 Pro on my T520 laptop with the same problem. Once the install is complete, there's absolutely NO support for a network connection - either LAN or WiFi.

I've tried everything possible - downloading all the various appropriate network drivers and trying each one, installing the Lenovo Access Connections software, connecting with a wired cable directly to the LAN, checking the BIOS to see if WiFi adapter is disabled (doesn't give this option at all).

I'm stumped and sitting here with a laptop that's pretty much useless unless I can figure this out. Previously, I've had to take it in and pay for a fix, but this is now getting silly. It was never a problem before. I've installed Windows operating systems dozens of times before and as long as I had the appropriate hardware and working network to connect to, the installation process would work just fine.

Any help that could be offered would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!
JJ

Does the WiFi card show up in Device Manager or as an Uknown Device at all?   Have you updated the Chipset driver?      If it does not show up in Device Manager at all, then it is most likey hardware related, if it shows up as unknown, it is most likely a driver issue.

Hello, I have a T520 Thinkpad with an i5-2520M processor and would like to install an i7. The i5 is the 8th gen dual core and hopefully I can speed this laptop up with the i7. My understanding is that you cannot replace a dual core with a quad core. Is this correct? If not then I'd shoot for something like the i7-6700HQ or some similar low cost i7. This should take a g2 socket if I'm not mistaken. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Mack

A:Processor Upgrade for T520

You can install an i7 but it must be a Sandy Bridge CPU (i7-2XXXM) to work with the chipset.  You should use one that was supported initially by the BIOS: (i7-2620M,  i7-2630QM,  i7-2670QM,  i7-2720QM,  i7-2760QM,  i7-2820QM,  i7-2860QM,  i7-2920XM or   i7-2960QM)

Note that the last 2 processors are 55W TDP (thermal design power) and they were only sold on W520 models.  They normally take a different (larger) fan and the W520 fan will not mount correctly on your machine.  If you try to use those CPUs on your T520 you may overheat.  I don't know if the power circuitry on the T520 is the same as the W520 so there may be other problems.

I have a T520. It has a SSD which I upgrded to while it still had Windows 7 Pro. Recently I upgraded to Win 10 Pro. My question is: I know that my BIOS version is not the latest. It's probably pretty old. I never upgraded BIOS after buying this laptop. When I go to Lenovo support site now, i do NOT see a BIOS version listed under Win 10 for T520. All of the BIOS updates are for Win 7 and older OS. Does this mean I can never update the BIOS anymore? I do not have any problems with the T520, it's running fine, but just was curious as to why Lenovo doesn't have a BIOS update for Win 10 listed under their T520 support page. If anyone can shed any light on this, i;d appreciate it.
