Q: [FAN FOUND] T520 what is the best heatsink that will work well with an i7 2960xm and fit in a T520

I have had this laptop for a few months now. I am planning to upgrade the processor. I'm really just looking for a fan/heatsink to combat it's insane heat. Is there even a powerful enough fan, if so will it withstand OC for longer amounts of time. Even 24 hours. Help. To all who have read my request and those who will read this will this be sufficient http://m.ebay.com/itm/262933210164?_mwBanner=1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have installed verison 7.2.9.1 of the Ericsson F5521GW WWAN card on my system, and it shows up in device manager as it should, but shows a yellow exclaimation mark and reports a Code 10 error, device cannot start. No matter what driver I have tried, whether it be from Lenovo or Toshiba, or a generic one, I absolutely cannot get this card to work in Windows 7. However, in both Ubuntu, and Mac OSX High Sierra, the WWAN card works right out of the box on this system. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi,I have this weird problem with my battery indicator. It doesn't work, shows gray battery and three dashes inside instead of the remaining time. The system (Windows 7) built-in indicator works properly however. When I open the Power Manager, it shows some random, impossibly high number of watts used. Each time I open the power manager, the value is completely different.  I haven't installed/updated anything recently, yet a few days ago when I've started the system, the battery indicator stopped working. Restarting the system doesn't help. What do I do now?

For six months or so, I've had a problem where my laptop's audio will stop working. The red "X" appears over the volume icon in the system tray and audio will not function whatsoever. Until now, rebooting has been 99% successful at restoring the audio until it eventually fails again. But in the last three days, my normal quick fix no longer does the trick. Apparently my laptop can no longer find the actual Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD hardware on the motherboard. This is a T520 laptop running Win 7 with SP1. The T520 is roughly six years old, so I realize the hardware's age might be a factor. There are definitely other issues related to its age (general performance sluggishness, inability to wake up from sleep mode, backup no longer works correctly) and I will eventually have to replace the laptop. But in the meantime, solving this persistent audio issue will buy me at least a few more months, so it's worth fixing to me. I've found dozens of threads that suggest reinstalling the device drivers, which of course I have tried several times using the drivers here. The problem: After rebooting, the device manager still doesn't list any playback device ("No audio devices are installed") even with both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked. Similarly, when I run the 8aad14ww.exe device installer, it terminates with an error message ("Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver").  Has the hardware itself ac... The only reason I would buy a new laptop is because of the Win 7 Pro EOS. The Tx20 is the last series to have a "real" keyboard, so is there new info on this?

I'm having trouble flashing the BIOS on a T520 using the Windows flashing package. It keeps blue-screen-ing, so I downloaded the CD image, thinking I could use Etcher or Rufus to make a bootable USB drive. Both of these programs balk at the ISO, however, claiming that it is not bootable. Etcher allowed me to put it on a USB flash drive anyway, but the system won't boot from it. I'm all for burning the image to CD except I haven't had blank CD-Rs lying around in ages. I'm sure I can find one somewhere, but in the meantime is there any way to make this image work on a USB flash drive?

Hi all. I have ThinkPad T520, and I wanted a USB 3.0 port. I found out that there is a dock station 4338-35 which has one. I was naive enough to believe that the docking station has its own USB 3.0 controller, so I've bought it. So yep, now I have lots of USB 2.0 ports, and no USB 3.0 port, because my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 controller. Awful sad. How naive. Let me be a bit more naive and ask: is it possible to upgrade T520 somehow, and get USB 3.0 controller on it? Or, is USB controller built into the chipset so it's not possible? Thanks.

Hello, I have a T520 Thinkpad with an i5-2520M processor and would like to install an i7. The i5 is the 8th gen dual core and hopefully I can speed this laptop up with the i7. My understanding is that you cannot replace a dual core with a quad core. Is this correct? If not then I'd shoot for something like the i7-6700HQ or some similar low cost i7. This should take a g2 socket if I'm not mistaken. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Mack

A:Processor Upgrade for T520

You can install an i7 but it must be a Sandy Bridge CPU (i7-2XXXM) to work with the chipset.  You should use one that was supported initially by the BIOS: (i7-2620M,  i7-2630QM,  i7-2670QM,  i7-2720QM,  i7-2760QM,  i7-2820QM,  i7-2860QM,  i7-2920XM or   i7-2960QM)

Note that the last 2 processors are 55W TDP (thermal design power) and they were only sold on W520 models.  They normally take a different (larger) fan and the W520 fan will not mount correctly on your machine.  If you try to use those CPUs on your T520 you may overheat.  I don't know if the power circuitry on the T520 is the same as the W520 so there may be other problems.

I've used the following article to change my boot disk to mSATA Triple your speed Laptop magazine

EDIT: Win 7 pro / Lenovo T520 Thinkpad / 8GB ram.
I installed the mSATA Intel 525 120GB SATA III
quite a while ago and it's been sitting and doing nothing. I did run Intel tools on it and I also used Macrium to image the original HD and I plonked it down on the new mSATA.
Laptop has been rebooted many times. mSATA seems stable.

I got to the step in the article above where I'm supposed to boot to the mSATA and load easyBCD to change the drive letter.
Last 'successful' step was going into the BIOS and changing the boot option to the SSD.
When I try to boot I get
Autochk program not found, skipping and BSOD.
The BSOD is very quick and unusually short. It looks like 2 or 3 lines only. The laptop then quickly reboots.

The mSATA is MBR and has only one partition.

I have no idea what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.

The good news is that I can still boot to the original HD and Win 7 still works!

EDIT: Apparently this means there is a problem with the boot record.
I loaded the Win 7 disc and tried a system repair. It ran but couldn't repair.
Went into recovery cmd prompt as administrator.

/bootrec rebuilding - found 0 windows installs
/mbr and /fixboot .... both end unsucsefully

A:Installing mSata SSD to T520

ChrisPbass, I always recommend removal or disconnect all other hard disks when installing the OS, it saves a lot of aggravation
and allows the OS to be properly installed and bootable.
I would remove the existing drives and do a re-install on the SSD without any other drives present.

I have a T520. It has a SSD which I upgrded to while it still had Windows 7 Pro. Recently I upgraded to Win 10 Pro. My question is: I know that my BIOS version is not the latest. It's probably pretty old. I never upgraded BIOS after buying this laptop. When I go to Lenovo support site now, i do NOT see a BIOS version listed under Win 10 for T520. All of the BIOS updates are for Win 7 and older OS. Does this mean I can never update the BIOS anymore? I do not have any problems with the T520, it's running fine, but just was curious as to why Lenovo doesn't have a BIOS update for Win 10 listed under their T520 support page. If anyone can shed any light on this, i;d appreciate it. Thanks!

Hello. Today my ThinkPad T520 stopped showing anything, it always shows the white screen. How it started: in my Linux Mint, I verified that when I close the laptop cover, it enters Suspend mode, and when I open it back, it wakes up. I don't quite like it, since I may want to close it just to move from one room to another, and I would like it to keep running; so I adjusted system settings accordingly (there is a dropdown menu, like, what to do when the laptop cover is closed; I set to "do nothing"), and then I closed the cover. I verified that it keeps running, so I opened it, and I see the white screen. I was thinking it is some issue with Linux, so, I just rebooted it, but just when it starts booting, it shows the white screen again. I can wait for some time, it boots into the OS (I'm judging by the HDD led). Alternatively, when it starts booting, I can press F1, it beeps and enters setup (I'm judging by the HDD led being idle). So, the overall system works, but the display keeps being plain white. It looks like the hardware issue.  Could anyone please give me some clue? How could that happen, and how can I try to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I need a new laptop and decided to go with the T520. I've been a fan of the ThinkPads for a long time, worked on a few models at my company but never owned one. I was first looking at the Edge series but after a brief research I understood that they're not the real successors of the iconic ThinkPad brand, so i picked up the T series. The T520 has everything I want from a laptop - good processor and lots of RAM (I'll upgrade it to 8). The NVIDIA GPU could've been better, but I am not a gamer so it's OK. To do a complete research before buying one I've read almost everything I can find for the model - forums, reviews, etc.At first it surprised me that there aren't a lot of reviews. I thought this was a really popular laptop and I was expecting the internet to be flooded with them. Also many of the forum posts where about different problems with the model and comments on how the new T series aren't comparable as in quality and durability to the IBM ThinkPad era. My question is - how much of this is true? What are your opinions on the new T series? Are they as good as the ThinkPad brand suggests? Should I really pay more for a laptop and get the T520? Sorry if my questions are too broad. Thank you in advance.

I've removed the i5 processor in a couple of T510 and 520 laptops and installed i7-640M or i7-2640M processors. Recently I installed an i7-2960XM which performed nicely. One problem though. I had some suspicions that this may not be fully compatible as it may create too much heat. With this in mind after I installed this processor I closely monitored the temperature and found that most of the time it remained between 115 to 165 ...... until I began loading down applications. The temp would soar up to near 200 degrees but would dwell shortly in the 175 range then drop down to 160 or 140.  Since then I've removed this cpu and will most likely go with the i7-2640M. The big question is wold the much faster i7-2960XM be compatible? I'm not fully convinced the program (Advanced System Care) is correctly monitoring the temperature. However I dare not risk damaging my system if this system is overheating. The performance increase of the faster cpu is very significant. Do I dare risk going faster?

I would be more concerned with the power supply.  The i7-2960XM processor is a 55w CPU vs. 35W on the dual core model.  I know the 55w processors were only sold on the W520 and they got a bigger fan, also.  Something like an i7-2670QM (45W, quad core) would be less likely to overtax something.  The 45w quad core CPU was offered on the T520

Unfortunately I do no see any Windws 10 drivers for the Bluetooth daughter card installed in T520's on Lenovo's ore Braodcom's site, and that is almost certainly what you need.    Without a Windows 10 driver, your laptop's bluetoot adapter will not work properly.  The BT daughter card is replaceable, but I do not see any info on upgrading it to a newer compatable model either. Lenovo FRU numbers (Field Replacement Unit) for exisging card. 60Y327160Y3275 Lenovo Hardware Maintenance Manual ThinkPad T520, T520i, and W520https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t520_t520i_w520_hmm_en_0A60078_08.pdf

My T520 has started to exhibit a very weird behaviour: after a few minutes turned on it just suddenly restarts. After that sometimes it goes up correctly but most of the times the power button turns on for 0.5 seconds and then turns off again and it turns on again after 3 seconds and turns off after 0.5 seconds never booting up. I have to remove all battery and ac power and wait a bit to turn it on. Sometimes it stays on for a few minutes, sometimes for 1 hour...  The restart seems to be hardware related because I can also get the restarts when I was browsing the BIOS normally, so it doesn't seem to be software, windows or virus related. 2 months ago I opened open the laptop and changed the thermal paste of the CPU and GPU and temperatures lowered down quite a lot. 1 month ago the fingerprint reader stopped working so I opened the laptop again to disconnect it.  I tried only using battery power and it's the same. I tried removing the battery and only using A/C power and it's the same. I ran lenovo memory tests and it came back OK. Right now I'm lost on what can I try or what can be wrong with this. Any tips what may be wrong?  should I change the motherboard or cpu or what?

HiThe dust on the PCB elements and lanes might cause such issue. Mainly on the CPU power circuits (power filters like capacitors) near to the CPU placement and power switch chip and it circuits near to the systemboard power connector.Clear the PCB using compressed air and alcohol.

(1) My wife runs Windows 10 Pro on her aging T520. It has a 500Gb SSD (SATA, of course).(2) She's getting a new T470. We bought it with a SATA hd so that I could replace the hd with the SSD from her T520.(3) I had been thinking I could just remove the hd from the T470, install in its place the SSD taken from her T520, reboot, let Windows 10 find the drivers it needs, and Bob's your uncle. What's wrong with this picture?

It will be as simple as that if you set your T470 to boot in Legacy mode (not UEFI). Otherwise you will need to reinstall Windows.
