Illogical XP alpha sequence

Q: Illogical XP alpha sequence

Sorry, I borrowed shelley's thread title - because I have a similar problem, but different.

When I open any folder the contents are in reverse alphabetical order. I can "Arrange Icons by Name..." and get them in correct order until I restart the computer, then they revert back to reverse order.
I have done this arrange deal thru Control Panel's Folder Options and applied to all folders, and have gone thru every individual folder seperately - only to have all changes reversed when I boot up.

As an added bonus Windows will not remember my preference in window sizing, either. I like "medium" windows when I have a lot of them open, but XP insists on maximizing them (again, this is after I have resized everything - then upon a fresh bootup everything I open goes full screen).

Now, even if I arrange every folder in correct order, if I use a program that bring up a windows directory choice, that also is bass-ackwards.

Example: trying to "Save As.." from any program may result in a window such as this:

<img src= "http://forums.techguy.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=833926 ">

Reverse alpha should be evident.

Anyway, I thought there might be a registry key change that might solve this, I am comfortable with regedits ( shudder) as long as I have proper instructions

Preferred Solution: Illogical XP alpha sequence

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had a perfectly good file number sequence which went like this, for example ~

tbh_0051
tbh_0051x
tbh_0060
tbh_0060x
(and much further down the list)
tbh_050
tbh_051
tbh_060

All very logical, leading zeros counting as a real number.

Suddenly, under XP, they are in this sequence ~

tbh_050
tbh_0051
tbh_051
tbh_0051x
tbh_060
tbh_0060
tbh_0060x

where the second leading zero seems to be irrelevant. Not only are they now out of sequence but all lumped higgledy piggledy together. This makes my pitiful life incredibly difficult because none of my many thousands of file numbers now make any logical sense! Can anyone help me put the old numbering sequence back together again and regain my sanity?

Hi all
I read over and over again in this Forum that NO AV product is ever 100% effective - although one should of course use protection to make it much harder for your computer to get infected.

However people then conveniently forget THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN -- you can't ensure either that a Virus will be 100% removed using standard tools either - since the AV software can't gurantee 100% protection why should notification of 100% removal be any better either.

IMO if you are unlucky enough to have a computer infection the ONLY PROPER and SAFE way to get rid of it is as follows.

1) Re-initialise ALL HDD's on that machine -- this means writing X'00's (binary zero) on EVERY SECTOR at least 4 times including SECTOR 0 and the Master Boot Record (MBR).

2) Re-install your OS and applications from a KNOWN CLEAN SOURCE.

IMO No other method can be guaranteed as 100% safe.

With decent imaging software etc your re-installation shouldn't take too long anyway. Re initialising the disks is probably the lengthiest part of the process.

Note - if you restore a safe image only the data part of the disk is restored -- it's not a sector by sector restore -- that's why programs like acronis etc are FAST. Thats also why I recommend initialising the WHOLE DISK before restoring.

I need to install Internet Explorer 8, in order to get Windows Update, but I can't get Internet Explorer 8 to work without the Microsoft .net framework programs...which I can't download or install, because I don't have Internet Explorer 8!  What's up with this dumb and illogical catch-22?!

A:Caught in a Circular (and Illogical) Loop

There is no catch-22 at all.

There are direct downloads for every version of MS.NET, IE8.  If you use Google to search for "IE8 downlaod" and "NET Framework download"...you will see that there are diredct downloads from the Microsoft website for those.

There are no dependencies between MS.NET, IE, and Windows Update.  You need SP3 installed access the Windows Update site for all critical updates since SP3 was issued, which will include any updates to MS.NET or IE that a user may need.

I am facing an illogical problem on my wife's dell inspiron. The computer started to shutdown randomly while she was working. The problem started to evolve until the day when the computer always turned off before loading the windows.
I tried to check the bios, but the computer turned off 10-20 seconds after getting into the bios. Because the fan blew almost cold air, I thought it might not be an overheating issue, but motherboard, ram, power board or any other hardware issue.
In a desperate move, I tried to install ubuntu via a live CD and it surprisingly installed, loaded and works non stop since then. Hence, I ruled out the possibility of hardware failure.
However, the problem persisted in bios or if I stayed in the grub loader for more than 15 seconds. I thought that the only logical explanation would be "overheating" in bios because unlike the OS, bios tends to utilize 100% of the CPU.
I took the computer a part, cleaned the fan, heat sink and applied high quality thermal paste on the CPU die and GPU ATI chip. I know that the thermal compound worked out because the system shows idle temperature drops from 50 to 35 and 75 to 60 degrees Celsius for the CPU and GPU respectively.
Finally, I tried to load again into the bios, but the problem still persists.
What on earth am I missing? I just need a logical explanation for the peace of my mind

I have a small wireless network and i set encryption to WPA instead of WEP for tighter security but I kept having problems with a couple of the pc's not going online and at other times all 4 didn't find each other. I tried WEP but it's not as safe as WPA and it didn't work well either. I heard of a product called Alpha Shield. I checked it out and bought it. Now, it's a firewall, blocks all 3rd party pop-ups, makes your pc invisible to hackers, stops MS Blast, My Doom and similar worms and has 100% guaranteed security. With everything it does, isn't my wireless network as safe as it would be if I had WEP or WPA encryption working?
Thanks,Jim

A:Alpha Shield

No. Alphashield is simply protecting the PC's, not the wireless network itself. Without WEP/WPA, anyone can get on your wireless network and connect to the internet through your router. ie. you're providing essentially free internet access to anyone within about 100 feet of your house.

If you don't care, then you're fine with just using that product.

FWIW, I don't think the problem you were experiencing was a WPA/WEP problem. I'd guess it may have been a shared key problem, or some other firewall (XP's built in firewall?) problem.

I thought that I would post as I have seen some software posts for invisible Web Surfing and I wondered what Alpha shield really does?

We use it at work at the request of management. We are XP, OS sp2 and are hi speed and have a router each and the Alpha Shield. The large company that looks after our computers did a test and it showed the Ports all in stealth and so I wondered under what concept this devise works and whether it is really good to use as they have given me one along with a router to use at home as I do take work home and do it on my notebook.

I really would appreciate comments. I should say that we have other security programs and have never had problems with our work computers, malware, viruses or other nasties!

I hope to hear from someone regarding this inquiry, thankyou.

For some reason, after choosing a png, psd or tga that has the alpha channel enabled after saving, it doesn't appear once the texture is chosen when applying it on a surface in the material editor.

I can preview the textures in programs like windows fax/photo viewer and it shows as transparent, but is either white or grey fill in when placed in max.

Is there something else I must do to make it show through? In the viewer it would show as a mostly white texture, instead of the metal grate it's supposed to be.

A:Alpha Logo to DST?

Hi and welcome to TSG, there are some fairly expensive commercial programs that will do the conversion as well as some free or inexpensive ones that require a lot more user interaction to get good results. A search through some older posts in our "Digital Photography & Imaging" forum will find discussions on both types.

Due to copyright issues, this web site no longer permits members converting graphics files to DST files for other members.

Has anyone ran this yet?

I haven't ran it on Windows yet, but I did run it on my Powerbook G4, I'm very impressed with it. Really the only differences between 9.6 and 10a is the rendering engine, but it seems to be significantly faster. I used to use Opera as my primary browser for any OS, and have since about 2000, but a few months ago I dropped Opera for Safari on my mac because Opera was just too slow and giving me a pinwheel at times I didn't think it should.

I did delete every bit of Opera 9 before installing Opera 10, so some of my speed increase maybe attributed to a fresh set of settings/preferences...

Was just wondering if anyone else has given Opera 10 a shot yet and what they think.

You can get it here: http://www.opera.com/browser/next/
They are of course clamining its much faster ect. And it does pass the Acid 3 test, which is somewhat cool.

I just found this [link] and decided to post it. FireFox's 3.7 Alpha 5 lets you throw your tabs on the top of the browser window, right below the title bar, like Chrome. I've been wanting Mozilla to do that for a while now. xD

A:FireFox 3.7 Alpha

It's looking good so far, but they really need to remove the title bar for it to be on par w/ Chrome. Tabs on top AND flush w/ top of screen when maximized is what makes the feature great in Chrome (allows less precise clicking, if you're like me & don't switch tabs using key shortcuts).

I am using XP & IE. I have a AVG antivirus program + software from
my cable provider. Yesterday I got a message that my computer was
infected and the screen went to My Computer showing multiple trojans
etc. I could not get out of the loop. Now everytime I try a URL I get a
message that it's been blocked and could harm my computer. I somehow
downloaded a new program called Alpha Antivirus and I can't remove it
with the add/remove feature in Control Panel. Apparently the program has
not been activated as it keeps asking me to do so. Any help with this wouldbe appreciated.

Well, it has yet to be announced, but it looks like a formality if they've already posted it on OSU.

Remember, it's not the final product. It is aimed at testers but anyone can use it, at their own risk. Having said that, the last Alpha release worked almost perfectly for me.

Mozilla has released Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1, the first development step in the way for Firefox 3.6 (code named Namoroka), targeted for later this year.
One of the main themes in this release is making Firefox feel snappier to the user: whether you are launching it, opening a new tab, a sidebar, there is a difference on whether the action is done fast and perceived fast.

I've been looking in searches, but it seems kind of complicated and one went into a lot of detail, but seemed to relate to a game called QUAKE

I downloaded a free plugin for PSP and Photoshop (and put it in each) and tried it in PSP tonight. It says it requires an alpha channel.

The plugin is for adding snow to a picture, and even has a setting for watcing it fall (I'm not sure if this is animated or not. I'm new to plugins and effects/filters)

One of the websites I found about making an alpha channel showed the tab for channels on photoshop. So, I know where it is there (not sure about PSP)

I have PSP7 and Photoshop6.

I have an idea it's changing the texture in places on the picture, and maybe making some parts a bit transparent, or not as dense?

It's late, and I thought if someone could explain it simply (how to do it) or knows of a basic tutorial I could follow, that would be more direct.

Thanks,

~ Carrie

I am not sure if this is the right place to put this but here it is. I just need to know if this is a good graphics card to get for gaming. Thanks!

A:Questions about 8800GT alpha dog

Probably not, its a decent card but its pretty old, back from 2007. If you're buying a graphics card you should be buying a new model, used graphics cards are generally a bad investment.

What kind of games are you looking to play? My suggestion if you're going to be gaming is to get no less than a Geforce GTX 550 Ti or a Radeon HD 6770, and considerably better depending if want to play the latest games at the highest settings.

On the heels of Firefox 3.6.3 Plugin 1 / 3.6.4 codename Lorentz Beta, Mozilla has made available for download a new release of the next major iteration of its open source browser. Firefox 3.7 Alpha 4 is currently available for download from Mozilla?s FTP servers, as it is a very early development milestone of the next version of Firefox. In fact, Firefox 3.7 Alpha 4 is the Mozilla Developer Preview 1.9.3 Alpha 4, and in this regard, not a full browser, and certainly not ready for end users, but instead designed to be tested by early adopters and developers.

Opera just recently released the new Opera 10.10 browser with support for an entirely new technology (Opera Unite), and they are already on their way for 10.50 which bring almost an entirely new Opera experience.

Right after 10.10 release Opera has also made available alpha versions of 10.20 which includes support for running Opera Widgets as standalone applications, without requiring the browse to run.

Hi,

I have been running this 8800GT Alpha Dog (factory OC'd) for some time now and it has been fine.

I did have some problems with it when I first got it (the same problem I am having now) and after quite a bit of investigation the general concensus appeared to indicate a heat problem with some 8800GT when it got over 75 degrees. So, I bought a ThermalRight HR-03 heatsink and fan to put on it and it worked fine.

Occasionally, when gaming (so it is when under load) it will totally lock up, graphics become distorted and sound loops resulting in me having to hard reset. I believe there isn't much else I can do and on the whole ive found it to be quite a capable card, but I am limited by this problem. As long as turn the graphics settings down a bit it seems to work fine, if I ramp them up (the card still runs a good FPS at the higher settings before it crashes) it will die at some point. This even happens with the side off the case and I have only managed to monitor temps up to around 70 degrees (normally maxes at 50-55 when gaming without crashes).

I am running it off an OCZ 700W PSU, single 12v rail but cant remember the amps off the top of my head.

I am considering changing the card out as I can not seem to get the best out of it, if I do change it I might aswell upgrade a bit. Any thoughts on a reasonable upgrade that isn't going to cost the earth (considering the card is 2 years or so old), looking at under 100 ideally. Either that, or anyone having an... Read more

Hey everyone,

Just a real simple question. Does anyone have or know where i can download Divx Player 2.0 Alpha from?

I know there are better versions available, but i need this one...

Matt.

A:Anyone got Divx Player 2.0 Alpha??

matt choules,

I just ran a number of Google searches to see what I could turn up - there were numerous links which when opened were to Divx 2.6, or which merely opened the gateway to popup heaven

In the event nobody here can offer you a working link you might try these two sites :

http://www.mpegx.com - If need be check their extensive 'Links'.

Alternatively try here :

http://www.dvdrhelp.com

They offer the latest files for download - however click on Forums .. you might find someone who has the file you need and can get it to you.
