Defer Feature Updates

Q: Defer Feature Updates

Windows 10 Pro
Version 1703
Just updated to Creators Update and trying to figure out the changes. From what I have been reading on deferring feature updates, under advanced options, you can defer up to 365 days. The drop down menu on this latest up to date build allows 8 days. This is in contrast to what I've been reading. Has this been changed and if so, how can I get more days without using Group Policy ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Something I just experienced and wondering about how or why it can be this way.
I have had 10 on my machine for a month or more now.
Just finished upgrading my wife's a couple of hours ago.
Identical computers as far as make, model etc.
Did a check for updates on mine just incase that was the reason (no new updates).
After upgrading her's she has the "defer updates" option and I don't.
Same edition,version and build.
Not a big deal but I sure would like to have the option on mine.

Same edition,

A:Defer updates

And now it's gone so nevermind.
After the option being there for a couple of hours there was just an an update for flash and malicious software removal tool and the defer updates option was gone.

I've been having a returning problem for months on end and by this stage I am livid with Windows not respecting my wishes to NOT INSTALL the latest driver for my Synaptics touchpad/trackpoint device, because this driver totally ****s the user experience my Lenovo X230 laptop.

(Latest Synaptics driver is useless for X230 trackpointer in Win10 because sensitivity is simply to low. I have found my solution for this: using Synaptics driver for Win 8.1 ( My issue is with this sadistic autoupdate feature.)

I have tried deferring the driver. I have tried many times to uninstall + delete drivers in device manager. But, no questions asked, it automagically installs 19.0 during startup. I have tried rolling back to 16.2. After a reboot it is back to 19.0 again because **** YOU. Just now I made group policy that instructs Windows to ASK before downloading and installing updates. Does it care? No. It does what it pleases. WHY do you make it so hard to stop a known bad update from happening again and again and again. This feels like a sick joke to me.

A:How to /actually/ defer updates?

Hello Harald,

There's a couple of options that you could use if you like.

One is to disable automatic updates to be able to install them when you like.

Windows Update Automatic Updates - Enable or Disable in Windows 10

Next, is to disable driver updates from being included in Windows Updates. Of course, you'll have to manually download and install driver updates for your devices from the manufacturer afterwards though.

Just a quick question. I understand that the latest Windows 10 update - KB3194496 - contains 'improvements and fixes' to quote Microsoft.

Considering this update doesn't mention security updates/patches (but that could be implicit in 'fixes' I concede), why am I unable to defer it using Windows 10 Pro (with the defer updates option checked in Settings)?

KB3194496 makes my system unstable, and after a Macrium image restore, it still downloads and installs automatically then prompts for restart.

Thanks for any help you can provide, and sorry if I am missing something painfully obvious.

Is there a difference between 'Quality', 'Definition' or 'Other' Windows 10 updates and 'Feature' updates?

When my PC carries out 'Quality', 'Definition' or 'Other' updates they work perfectly.

'Feature' updates always fail drastically. I have tried the v1809 to v1909 Feature update several times and each time the download and install phases appear to complete successfully with no error messages, but the restart phase concludes with the BSOD and the stopcode error message ?unmountable boot volume?.

I have a spare bootable drive containing Windows 10 and I used it to examine my C drive. Each time it reports that the C partition has been deleted.

Fortunately I have installed Rollback RX and I was able to revert my C drive to its former state.

I tried Chkdsk, Windows 10 Repair Upgrade and Clean Boot. Same result.

Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Updates Smaller and Faster with New OS Feature

Microsoft has officially introduced the new so-called Unified Update Platform (UUP) which is the company?s latest attempt to make Windows 10 updates smaller and faster on both PCs and smartphones.

In essence, UUP is a new technology that makes it possible for Windows 10 devices to download only the changes that have been implemented since the previous update, which should significantly improve the delivery of large OS updates, as it?s the case of the upcoming Creators Update due in early 2017. These differential updates thus make it possible to receive only the latest improvements and not a full OS build.

UUP will be available on PCs and smartphones powered by Windows 10, but not on Xbox One consoles, as Microsoft is not shipping updates via Windows Updates here.

The company explains that download size can be decreased by as much as 35 percent, which is definitely a big achievement and comes in handy especially for users with slow Internet or limited bandwidth.

Faster checking for updates
Microsoft says that it?s also working on making checking for updates more efficient by changing how the system works on Windows 10 devices.

?We are reducing the update data sent to client devices as well as the amount of processing we are doing on devices, this especially important for devices built on the Mobile OS. Using UUP, when your device checks for updates, the Windows Update service will evaluat... Read more

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

Your Windows 10 system may have a Defer upgrades option for Windows Update. This option delays feature upgrades for several months while allowing security updates through.Enabling this option puts your Windows 10 PC on the Current branch for business. Its intended for business users who want to wait a bit longer before getting new features on their PCs.What Does Defer Upgrades in Windows 10 Mean?Important points:The Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10 all have the Defer upgrades option. Windows 10 Home the standard version of Windows 10 youll get on most new PCs does not have this option.Note that the Professional edition of Windows 10 doesnt actually use this option by default youll still have to enable it yourself.Feature upgrades can only be delayed several months. Its unclear exactly how many months these upgrades will be deferred for. But it is clear that you cant defer these upgrades indefinitely. You can defer updates to ensure theyll receive more testing before they make it to your PCs. I have a "defer delivery" rule that I've set up. It delays the sending of Outlook emails so they sit in my outbox for a minute before leaving the computer. But as of late they are just sitting in the Outbox and not going anywhere - not always, but some of the time.

I've tried disabling Com add-ins, anti-virus, checked POP settings and called the provider. I've also tried deleting the rule and re-creating it. None of these have solved the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks if you can help!

So...this is actually normal behavior for Windows Updates with this new feature: "Windows Update Delivery Optimization".  The feature is available on Windows 10 only (which the OS in all of our alerts).  Check out this for more info on

A:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

Hello all,
I am looking to buy a router with VPN Feature. I would be configuring either Client-to-Gateway VPN Tunnels or Gateway-to-Gateway VPN Tunnels. Now the problem is I don’t know how to find out if a router is capable of configuring both VPN Tunnels by seeing the specification in the manufactures web site. And can VPN Feature: IPsec pass-through be considered as a sign that the router is capable of configuring both VPN Tunnles? Please Help me find the VPN Feature that would confirm that the router is capable of configuring both VPN Tunnels or any one.

Thank you

A:VPN Feature query?

No. A router listing IPSEC/VPN pass through is not a sign of the router being able to do VPN connections. All the IPSEC pass through does is to have the firewall pre-configured to allow VPN type communication through it. For IPSEC, you need to allow UDP port 500, IP port 50, IP port 51, UDP port 4500, and in some cases UDP port 10000.

If a router can act as a VPN end point/server, it will say so. Here's an excerpt from one of Netgear's VPN end point routers which lists things in its spec showing IPSEC support:

IPsec-based 56-bit (DES) 168-bit (3DES), or 256-bit (AES) encryption algorithm
MD5 or SHA-1 hashing algorithm
ESP support
PKI features with X.509 v.3 certificate support
remote access VPN (client-to-site), site-to-site VPN
IPsec NAT traversal (VPN passthrough)
Two-factor authentication support
