I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all
For those that can't find any promo codes for technet there's a general 15% discount available at

Microsoft TechNet Home Page (United Kingdom - English)

I'm not an MS employee or contractor but I will say if you have a few machines and want to try out full products such as W7 ultimate or W 2008 server with FULL keys its worth taking out a subscription.

You can often get better deals than the 15% but this is a lot better than nothing if your country doesn't have specific extra discounts.

Cheers

The problem here is not being able to spend for the other option where a hard copy on disk is regularly shipped! Downloads are one thing for the Plus Direct while the Plus Single User option would be the one used here.

Yep, MS Skype for Windows Desktops just showed up in my update list along with the usual daily MSE definitions. I have the "show me but let me decide" option set so I was able to hide the update and move on. If you have the Automatic Update set, I suspect you'll have Skype popping up on your screen and wonder where it came from. I don't even have a camera on this machine so I wonder what logic MS used to send Skype as an update?

Microsoft looks poised to take the same approach with Windows 10. Once the new operating system debuts, the company will count on app sales to drive revenue. Windows 10 will run re-worked Android and iOS apps, which means there is a massive potential number of software packages that developers might like to have available on the many computers that will likely run the new Windows version.
But don't think Microsoft is getting touchy-feely. The software maker's chief operating office recently spoke about moving from one-time licensing fees to an "annuity conversion," meaning that the company may still be trying to figure out how to loop people, or at least corporations, into paying an annual fee.

I am not sure how Microsoft would handle an "annuity conversion" on an OEM computer but they would lose me as a customer if Windows went to a subscription model or one where no program was allowed to be installed unless from the store.

Microsoft offers 50% discount on Windows and Office upgrades

Benjamin Rubenstein 31 minutes ago ? no comments & 306 views
According to ZDNet, Microsoft really wants to push medium and small businesses to move away from Windows XP and older versions of Office. The "Up-to-Date Discount," as they call it, is available for the first year of the OVS (Open Value Subscription) licensing program and applies to customers using the Professional versions of Microsoft's software. OVS is a way for small and medium businesses to pay for their software licenses over time, instead of having to foot it all up front.

The Ten Immutable Laws of Security

Here at the Microsoft Security Response Center, we investigate thousands of security reports every year. In some cases, we find that a report describes a bona fide security vulnerability resulting from a flaw in one of our products; when this happens, we develop a patch as quickly as possible to correct the error. (See "A Tour of the Microsoft Security Response Center"). In other cases, the reported problems simply result from a mistake someone made in using the product. But many fall in between. They discuss real security problems, but the problems don't result from product flaws. Over the years, we've developed a list of issues like these, that we call the Ten Immutable Laws of Security.

New anti-malware solution will broaden PC protection and help improve Windows experience.

REDMOND, Wash. ? Nov. 18, 2008 ? To address the growing need for a PC security solution tailored to the demands of emerging markets, smaller PC form factors and rapid increases in the incidence of malware, Microsoft Corp. plans to offer a new consumer security offering focused on core anti-malware protection.
Code-named ?Morro,? this streamlined solution will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. This new solution, to be offered at no charge to consumers, will be architected for a smaller footprint that will use fewer computing resources, making it ideal for low-bandwidth scenarios or less powerful PCs. As part of Microsoft?s move to focus on this simplified offering, the company also announced today that it will discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009.
?Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take that concern seriously,? said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Online Services and Windows Division at Microsoft. ?This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.?... Hi, I have IE 7.0.5730 installed on my Win XP Pro system with SP2 also running & I keep pretty up to date with hotfixes etc...

I noticed tonight that instead of IE showing me the typical "Internet Explorer Cannot display this webpage" - which I quite honestly prefer over being 'thrown' to some browser help / add-on search utility - INSTEAD I land on the Microsoft Technet page - but only for inactive pages or something. If I type in complete nonsense & then hit CTRL-Enter (to finish the .com deal) I -DO- get the page I like (blank clean cannot display this page deal).

As a case in point I was actually reading up on SVCHOST.EXE hogging up cpu load (another issue I'm sorting through) and attempted to download a utlity suggested from one of your pages: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...c-service.html
If you scroll down to post # 12 for downloading Process Explorer - that link takes me to the MS-Technet...

I already 'opted-out' of my Roadrunner search utility (Roadrunner is my cable connection provider) which they threw in unbeknownst to me...

So anyway - has anyone else had this happen or better yet have a suggestion to fix it?

Thanks!

http://www.infoworld.com/d/security-central/trend-micro-calls-foul-over-microsoft-offering-free-antivirus-software-windows-update-336?source=rss_security_centralMicrosoft this week began offering U.S. customers its free antivirus program via Windows' built-in update service, a move one major security firm said may be anticompetitive.Last Monday, Microsoft started adding Security Essentials to the optional download list seen by U.S. users running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 when they fired up the operating system's update service. The move followed an Oct. 19 kickoff of a similar program in the U.K."Commercializing Windows Update to distribute other software applications raises significant questions about unfair competition," said Carol Carpenter, the general manager of the consumer and small business group at Trend Micro, on Thursday."Windows Update is a de facto extension of Windows, so to begin delivering software tied to updates has us concerned," she added. "Windows Update is not a choice for users, and we believe it should not be used this way."If Windows doesn't detect working security software on the PC, Microsoft adds Security Essentials to the Optional section of Microsoft Update, a superset of the better-known Windows Update, or to Windows Update if it has been configured to also draw downloads from Microsoft Update.More at the link.

A:Trend Micro calls foul over Microsoft offering free AV software via Windows Update

Two comments get my attention in this report, first is "Windows Update is not a choice for users." Windows updates are a choice and can be turned off if one choses to do so. And one can be selective in their updates. Secondly, "If Windows doesn't detect working security software on the PC, Microsoft adds Security Essentials to the Optional section of Microsoft Update". OK, doesn't detect working security software, gee ya know I would feel a lot better knowing people were proactive and securing their machines so malware doesn't spread so easily. With the addition of even some security it would be helpful. And the fact it's free it's available to those who wouldn't buy from Trend anyway. Not everyone is aware of free alternatives. This is educational, and information by any method is power. Last part of #2, "Microsoft adds Security Essentials to the Optional section of Microsoft Update." The key word here for me is Optional. It still allows the user a choice. The fact that MS is offering security for free to those who likely won't be proactive enough to secure their machines is a good thing in my opinion. Those of use who have to deal with the consequences of unsecured malware ridden machines might be able to breathe once in a while.... Yeah right.I think it's a step in the right direction MS. Not perfect and not everyone will agree but I think it is.

The Internet Mail Connector (IMC) enables Microsoft Exchange Server
to communicate with other mail servers via SMTP. When the IMC
receives an SMTP extended Hello (EHLO) protocol command from a
connecting SMTP server, it responds by sending a status reply that
starts with the following:
250-<Exchange server ID>Hello<Connecting server ID>

Where:
<Exchange server ID> is the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) of
the Exchange server <Connecting server ID> is either the FQDN or
the IP address of the server that initiated the connection.

The FQDN would be used if the Exchange5.5 IMC is able to resolve
this information through a reverse DNS lookup; the IP address
would be used if a reverse DNS lookup was not possible or failed
to resolve the connecting servers IP address.

A security vulnerability results because of an unchecked buffer
In the IMC code that generates the response to the EHLO protocol
command. If the total length of the message exceeds a particular
value, the data would overrun the buffer. If the buffer were
overrun with random data, it would result in the failure of the
IMC. If, however, the buffer were overrun with carefully chosen
data, it could be possible for the attacker to run code in the
security context of the IMC, which runs as Exchange5.5 Service
Account.

It is important to note that the attacker could not simply send
Data to the IMC in order to overrun the buffer. Instead, the
Attacker would need to create a set of condi... Read more

Maggie:

Install the cumulative update for IE7 and the update for Microsoft NET Framework 3.5.

You don't need to install IE8, unless you want to upgrade from IE7.

You apparently already have Microsoft Silverlight installed, which is why an update for it is posted. Uninstall it in Add Or Remove Programs. You don't need it, and it's known to be problematic and to conflict with Adobe Flash Player.

I don't know why you're being prompted to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. It may be needed because of some program you have installed.

The Malicious Software Removal Tool is released every month. Go ahead and download it and let it run.

This is a cumulative patch that includes the functionality of all
previously released patches for SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server 2000, MSDE
1.0, and MSDE 2000. In addition, it eliminates three newly discovered
vulnerabilities.

- Named Pipe Hijacking -
Upon system startup, SQL Server creates and listens on a specific
named pipe for incoming connections to the server. A named pipe is a
specifically named one-way or two-way channel for communication
between a pipe server and one or more pipe clients. The named pipe is
checked for verification of which connection attempts can log on to
the system running SQL Server to execute queries against data that is
stored on the server.

A flaw exists in the checking method for the named pipe that could
allow an attacker local to the system running SQL Server to hijack
(gain control of) the named pipe during another client's
authenticated logon password. This would allow the attacker to gain
control of the named pipe at the same permission level as the user
who is attempting to connect. If the user who is attempting to
connect remotely has a higher level of permissions than the attacker,
the attacker will assume those rights when the named pipe is
compromised.

- Named Pipe Denial of Service -
In the same named pipes scenario that is mentioned in the "Named Pipe
Hijacking" section of this bulletin, it is possible for an
unauthenticated user who is local to the intranet to send a very
large packet to a specific named pip... Read more

Hiya

Not sure if this is the correct forum. If not, please move. Thanks

Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) is a centralized metadirectory
service that provides connectivity, management, and interoperability
functions to help unify fragmented directory and database
environments. It enables enterprises to link together disparate data
repositories such as Exchange directory, Active Directory,
third-party directory services, and proprietary databases, for the
purpose of ensuring that the data in each is consistent, accurate,
and can be centrally managed.

A flaw exists that could enable an unprivileged user to access and
manipulate data within MMS that should, by design, only be
accessible to MMS administrators. Specifically, it is possible for
an unprivileged user to connect to the MMS data repository via an
LDAP client in such a way as to bypass certain security checks.
This could enable an attacker to modify data within the MMS data
repository, either for the purpose of changing the MMS
configuration or replicating bogus data to the other data
repositories.

Microsoft temporarily suspends Windows 10 preview build availability ahead of RTM

Quote:

The Windows 10 RTM (release to manufacturing) milestone is close at hand.

On July 13, Microsoft temporarily suspended availability of Windows 10 for PC preview builds in preparation for the upgrade process, which commences July 29.

"Windows Insiders have been the first to see our work on Windows 10 at every stage. Now you will also be the first to get a build flighted to you using the channels that we'll use for targeting and deploying to PCs for our staged rollout," said Gabe Aul, head of the Windows 10 Insider program in a July 13 update to a previous blog post.

More from Aul:"We're suspending the availability of Windows 10 builds briefly while we prepare for that (rollout), and the next build that we flight to you will be delivered using the production channels. Starting tomorrow (July 14), we will also not be delivering any additional ISOs at this point as we really need Insiders to be using, stressing, and validating our distribution and upgrade processes. We'll make ISOs available again in the future, but for now we ask you to upgrade your current build via Windows Update once the next build is released."

Over the last couple of weeks, Microsoft began advertising Windows 10 to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. Those who are regularly up to date via Windows Update should now have the option to reserve a copy of Windows 10 via the system tray, which will put you in for pre-downloading Windows 10 before July 29th. Earlier this week, Microsoft released another update for Windows 8.1 users, which puts reserving Windows 10 at the forefront of Windows, literally during the Windows 8.1 setup process and even before reaching the desktop.

This new update allows users to reserve Windows 10 within the OOBE (out of box experience) when first booting a new install or setting up a newly purchased PC. The ability to reserve comes after you setup your account, but before you even reach the desktop. This means that new users who recently purchased a Windows 8.1 device simply can't miss the chance to reserve Windows 10. This also appears if you clean install Windows 8.1 with November Update roll-up and are connected to the internet.

When people surf the Internet on their web browsers, it's just a matter of time when they hit a page that has an online ad which then tries to install something on their computer. This week, the Microsoft Malware Protection Center team announced it will have some new criteria to define when such activity crosses over into the annoying. and sometimes malicious, adware side.

Pop-up online ads have to have a working close window, according to Microsoft's new adware policies.

In a blog post, Microsoft stated that online ads start to cross over into adware territory if they run programs on a user's PC and create "notifications promoting goods or services in programs other than itself." If that occurs, Microsoft states there must be a clear way to close such an ad, like a prominent "X" or a close button in, for example, pop-up ads.

Ads that show messages such as "Your PC performance is poor" must also clearly mention they are ads and not suggest they are in fact warnings generated by a PC, under the new rules. Finally, if a program is installed via an online ad on a computer, there must be a clear way to uninstall it. Also, the name of the program in the uninstall listing must exactly match the name that's shown in the ad.

The new adware policies will go into effect on July 1, in order to give online ad companies time to change the... Read more

The attached screen dump clip0001 shows that Win7 is suggesting I have 8 USB ports free - there are in fact only 6 on the PC, and four are in use. It also says my USB attached drive (Seagate Freeagent Desktop 320Gb) can work faster, but testing with HD tune says the device works at 30MB/s which to me seems just as it always was, and much the same as it was on my previous XP pro PC.

I just realised that I never installed any driver software on the Win 7 PC, so I have done that, with zero performance change of course. The second screen dump clip0002 is of device manager, telling me I have one USB2 enhanced port. My questions are: Have I actually got the device plugged into a USB 2 port, and if not how can I tell which is which?

A:Win 7 is offering to help - not

This is my best guess interpretation based on what I've seen/read about Windows over time

> Your snapshots show you have one USB2 Controller

> Windows' use of the word "port" in the DevMgr screen shot of "Unused Ports" is misleading. These are NOT the external USB ports you see on your computer. Rather, these are the connections the USB2 Controller can support via its Root Hub (all of this is on the motherboard)

This is easier to visualize if you use USBView for Windows. With USBView you see them as numbered locations. Note the screen shot from my computer also shows 8 "locations" two of which are connected.

> I believe the connection between external USB ports and the USB controllers on the m/b are not fixed but a dynamic decision Windows makes. USB2 devices should end up connected to a USB2 controller. Not sure why this isn't your case

p.s. You can also see a quick view of which devices are connected to which controllers using Device Manager. Click View->Devices By Connection, expand ACPI devices then the PCI bus to view how everything connects to it.

/* EDIT */
It's more likely the chipset drivers and h/w that are supposed to make that USB2 port to USB2 controller decision?

I'm currently running Win 7 Pro 64bit. I ran the WindowsMediaTool and selected to create media for another PC. It gives 3 choices as to what you want to access: Language, Edition and Architecture. The Edition pull-down offers Win 10 but not Win 10 Pro. The language and Architecture choices are fine.

I should be upgrading or installing Win 10 Pro.

What am I missing?

-- Larry

PS: I let the tool create the USB disk for me but I'm not sure I should use it if it doesn't refer to Win 10 Pro.

A:WindowsMediaTool not Offering Win 10 Pro

You did not miss anything.
The Windows 10 you saw on the list consists of both Home and Pro versions.
To simplify the explanation, when you install, the installer will recognize your Win 7 Pro, and you will get Win 10 Pro installed.

Hello.

I've been using Windows 7 for 4 years now so I assume there is no need to update 50 or more files.

When I shut down, my laptop begins updating. First, it was 51 files and it went extremely slow. Think it took about 4-5 hours. I checked windows update, and it still offered me 68 updates. So I shut down to update those 68 files. Again it took me forever to update and shut down ("shut down ..." message).

When I turn it on or restart, it takes some minutes too ("configuring" message).

After the update, I checked windows update, and there was no updates offered right after I turned on the laptop. But after few minutes, it offered 4, and now it's 15. The number of updates offered increases even though I ran updates several times.

I attached some images here.

I think the ones that repeat updates are the same files, but they have different KB#? I panic at these kind of troubles. Please help.

A:Keep offering the same updates

Don't muck with it - just let it update! Leave it alone to do its thing....different KB's are different updates.

Greetings!
System:  Win7 professional, 64 bit.  No active directory or group policy server within the software QA environment.
Due to constraints imposed by other software on the systems, it is not possible to allow IE-11 on the machines.  (It interferes with other, essential, software.)
However, every time someone launches IE-10, (which is the latest browser we can use), it automagically opens a tab
insisting that we install IE-11.

It's a nuisance to the staff. It interferes with automated testing. The bitching about it is driving me CRAZY!
. . . .and so on.
How do I prevent IE-10 from automatically opening the additional, unwanted, tab offering IE-11?

By using a local registry value, or whatever, on QA lab machines not connected to the "official" network. If possible, using some kind of group policy or automatically deployed patch on systems within the official network.
If I have to choose one or the other, I absolutely need #1.  #2 is a "nice to have"
Thanks!

Good evening,

Windows Update keeps offering KB3114887 (a MS Office 2010, 32-bit update) despite the fact it was already installed on March 9th. I have confirmed this by looking at the list of installed updates.

My question: Could someone please explain why this is occurring and how to get Windows Update to quit offering an update it has already installed?

Thank you for your time and any help!

I have tried to set up remote assistance on their machine. I enabled offer remote assistance in the group policy but then it asks for the <domain>\<username>.

Here is my stupid question; what is the domain name and user name I am to enter and where do I find it?

My in-laws and I would be very grateful for your thoughts

A:Offering remote assistance

It would want the domain name, the ISP's, (like for ex: earthlink.com) and then I would think their user name on that domain.

I have just reformatted and reinstalled Windows 7 Professional using a DVD that was purchased in January 2010. I have also accepted numerous Windows Update installations in the course of, I believe, 2 or 3 runs of Windows Update.

Last time I reinstalled (about 4 months ago), I believe I directly downloaded Service Pack 1 and installed it. This time I tried to see what Windows would recommend via Windows Update. I note that the Microsoft website says that Windows Update is the recommended way of obtaining SP1.

I am not being offered Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932). Does that mean I don't need it?

A:Why is Windows Update not offering me SP1?

Have you checked to see whether it has already been downloaded?

It'll tell you in System Properties under Windows Edition - just press the Win+Pause key combo to see it.

You can also check which updates are installed by checking your updates history or viewing installed updates in Control Panel>Programs>Uninstall A Program>View Installed Updates.
