Computer freezes, windows explorer freezes frequently

Q: Computer freezes, windows explorer freezes frequently

I have a Windows 7 64 bit laptop with 8gb ram. I have never had this problem until now. It freezes all the time and will not shut down. Am I infected? Freezing happened after a java update.

Preferred Solution: Computer freezes, windows explorer freezes frequently

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My System: Windows XP Pro SP2, ECS motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB RAM, Nvidia video card.

Description of Problem:
For the past few months, explorer.exe has been crashing frequently. It just crashes while I am browsing directories and/or click on files, I'll get the usual series of Windows dialog boxes to report the error, and then explorer.exe will automatically restart. It doesn't happen everytime, but once the problem does kick in, it seems to happen repeatedly.

I've also been experiencing the system freezing up on me. I need to manually reboot my system in this case.

The point of this post is to eliminate malware as the cause of my explorer.exe and/or system freezing problems. Attached is my hijackthis log. Please let me know if anything suspicious is found. Thanks!

Have no clue as to patterns - genuinely seems random. Previously had IE6 latest service pack loaded and it would freeze on average - 6 times a day - with no *.dmp file even though the Drwatson registry key was installed! Switched to Firefox, and immediate improvement - it now freezes randomly once every 2 days or so - often occurs when zonealarm receive green lights are on, and sometimes when many apps are open at once. Also no blue BSD would show - it just stops working - no mouse response, no keyboard response - not even Ctrl Alt Del - wait 5 minutes still nothing. Not sure why, but for the past few weeks, I haven't been able to use my computer for more than a couple hours before it just freezes up; I wasn't even aware this problem still existed...
I've looked around in other forums and done everything I've seen suggested, including a virus scan, malware scan, defragmenting the hard drive, cleaning up registry errors and deleting temorary files.

Here are my system specs:

ASUS M3N78-VM Mobo
Windows 7, 64-bit
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Processor (2.8 Ghz, quad core)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 video card
2 500g hard drives
DDR2, 6 gigs of system memory
450W power supply

I've had it for a few months, this just started happening a couple weeks ago.
Any help as to what might be going on, or how I might find out whats going on?

EDIT: the registry cleaner I used was Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

A:Computer freezes very frequently

I suggest installing a fresh copy of Windows if that is possible. You said you've tried everything else that you posted, and that's really what I would've told you to do. Sense it's a fairly new computer, hardware shouldn't be the issue. Try installing a fresh copy of Win 7.

I have a problem with my computer freezing. I am using Windows XP SP3. The freezing occurs kind of randomly, sometimes after being on for a few days, sometimes after windows starts, but when it occurs, I have to push the power button on my computer to shut everything down. There is no error message, everything just stops. Neither the mouse nor keyboard responds.

I think it is related to programs that display graphics. It seems to freeze very often, or much more quickly if I am playing a video game or scrolling through a website quickly with a lot of text. If I don't play a video game, then the computer may or may not just freeze randomly. Sometimes after a freeze, the computer freezes once or twice during startup before I can get a startup that lets me do things again. I have noticed the last couple of times I started up after freezing, the screen goes black just before I can see the desktop.

I have tried scanning for viruses with the AVG Free program. I have tried scanning for spyware with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. I have tried scanning my computer for errors with a program called RegCleaner. I have tried Defragmentation. I have tried turning off every other process in Task Manager except essential system processes. I have run chkdsk, Microsoft Memory Diagnostic to check for errors, but none can be found. I have tried reseting the BIOS and removing and replacing the MOBO battery. The problem persists through all of these things.

My computer gets stuck up or freezes occasionally for no reason. The only option will be to hit the reset button. When I do this, the system would not boot up. It boots the BIOS and then goes to a black screen. I tried reseating my RAM. Then the computer would work fine. But again after 2 days it gets stuck up and I have to repeat the same process.
I have reinstalled Windows XP a couple of times. It would work for 2 days, then the same problem arises. Also my computer's boot up time has gone upto 5 mins, previously it would take only 2 mins. Due to frequent use of the reset button, I am having about 8kb of bad sectors in my hard drive. I dont know if the problem is with my RAM or Motherboard.
Can any members plz advise me on how i should troubleshoot this problem?

Specs:
Pentium 4 Processor 2.80 GHz
Intel D101GGC Mother board
256 MB RAM

Its a 2 year old computer.

A:Computer freezes frequently

I would run a program like memtest86+ to ensure that your ram is not the issue.

http://www.memtest.org/

I would then run something like Prime95 or other CPU burn in tests to check your CPU.

There are programs like PCCheck that are out there that do an "okay" job at testing motherboard components but I'm not sure exactly how much I trust them and I've been using PCCheck for years.

Try to rule out the easy stuff first

Good Luck

I have a recurring problem in that my computer randomly will freeze and become non responsive(though I can move the mouse during these freezes). When clicking on a link or trying to view an e-mail I get the message "Not Responsive" as I watch the Windows "circle" rotate in the middle of the screen. Usually within 15 seconds to a minute the computer again returns to usable state. It used to happen only in Windows Mail. But about two weeks ago it started happening when using other programs, IE, Firefox, etc.

My system specs are as follows:
Dell Dimension E521
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2GHz
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 2DIMMs
256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Optiquest 19" widescreen lcd 1280 x 768
250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
Tower
Dell USB Keyboard and Dell 2-button Scroll Mouse
DSL 3.0 Mbps down 384 Kbps up

To this point I worked with Dell support to try to solve the problem. After doing a disk cleanup, removing temp files, etc. that didn't fix it, they had me perform a restore to Factory Settings. However even after doing that and reinstalling my programs and data files, the problem persists. I have tried opening Windows in safe mode and the problem doesn't occur then. BTW, there are no error messages when this occurs.
As for computer experience I can follow directions but not much beyond that. Any suggestions ... Read more

Thanks.

A:Computer very sluggish and freezes frequently

bjacobsonny, there is no malware in any of the logs, so we need to look elsewhere. Question time:

1. How much RAM do you have installed?
2. Have you checked the Event Viewer for Errors corresponding to time of a freerze?

Start> Run> type in eventvwr

Do this on each the System and the Applications logs:
[1]. Click to open the log>
[2]. Look for the Error>
[3] .Right click on the Error> Properties>
[4]. Click on Copy button, top right, below the down arrow >
[5]. Paste here (Ctrl V)
[6].NOTES
You can ignore Warnings and Information Events.
If you have a recurring Error with same ID#, same Source and same Description, only one copy is needed.
You don't need to include the lines of code in the box below the Description, if any.
Please do not copy the entire Event log.

Errors are time coded. Check the computer clock on freeze.

3. This one entry in the HijackThis log bother me a bit

Hi everyone

Recently my computer has started to completely freeze, with everything except the audio (but including the cursor!) being completely frozen. It seems to happen mostly when playing games, but has recently also happened when the only programme I'm running is Google Chrome. I've checked my system for viruses, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Hope someone here can help!

I've run the SF Diagnostics Tool and attached the .zip file to this post.

A:Computer frequently and randomly freezes

You need to see what temperatures you're hitting.

Download coretemp or hwmonitor and see how hot things get.

i have defraged and scaned for virus and found nothing.

My computer locks up on a regular basis. It locks up in two different ways. The way it does more frequently is, when I'm working on it the screen will just completely freeze. The pointer won't move when I move the mouse, and there is no response when I hit any keys, including if I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete. I then have to hit the reset button to do a reboot. The second way it freezes is the screen will just go completely blank, and then there is a beeping coming from inside the cpu. Then I also have to hit the reset button. It freezes this second way while I'm working on the computer too, but also it has done it, not too often but a couple of times when my computer is just sitting idle. I was searching for some solutions online, and 1 site recommended that I do a sytem restore. But when I tried to do this there were no restore points saved. I have learned that I erased the restore points when I ran a disk cleanup a little while back thinking that that might resolve my issues. I have also loaded a trial version of jv16 Powertools to do some registry cleaning. When it scanned my registry it found a lot of errors, which I then had it fix. But this still did not fix the locking up. I then went in the registry manually through the jv powertools to find any uneeded entries I could delete. I got a little over zealous, and apparently I deleted something related to my Microsoft Office. Now when I try to launch that program it searches for missing files and asks me to to inser... Hi, ok here's my problem about six months ago i bought my pc, a pakard bell imedia 2426, and it was working mostly fine apart from on the higher spec games it would crash, i would loose all control and have to restart the computer, this didn't bother me much as it was rare, but it has started to occur more often.

I soon relised however that even though it would freeze and i would loose all control, if left for a time that seems to be between 1 minute and 3 minutes (different everytime) it would resume as normal and execute any commands i had given in the frozen time (eg control-alt-delete, or alt F4). I thought this odd but lived with it as it was still only on higher spec games and only occured about once an hour.

However recently its been happening more often and on lower spec games, it is becoming very anoying. Does anyone know what could be causing it?

One more thing, for most games after a freeze no game time has passed, although on an online game (i recently started a trial on lotr online) or any other game played online real time obviously still happens, which makes it virtually impossible to play. It may also be worth mentioning that the sound either stops or loops continually when frozen, although in the case of lotr online the music continues as normal.

Here is my computer details if it helps (copied from dxdiag)

Hey guys,

On my Windows XP Computer, a few days ago I was watching a flash video and my computer froze. When it froze, it started to make a beep noise (no delays, just one uninterrupted beep). Since then I've had a variety of issues. They include:

1. I'd restart the computer, use it for a little bit, then a slow freeze would occur while browsing. For example, I'd be using Firefox, I'd try to load a new page, and it would freeze up while I still was able to control my mouse. However, I wouldn't be able to click or open up anything. This would force me to restart.

I would also get a freeze where I'd open up a program and it would appear in the bar but it wouldn't have a border around it. It would never load and I've have to restart.

2. Firefox and Internet Explorer have been crashing frequently. They give the Application Errors that say "... has encountered an unexpected error... send error info, etc.". It seems like these usually happen on JavaScript heavy pages like Gmail.

Some of the things I've tried so far:

1. Turned off the computer and ran a fan next to it for a few hours. When I started it back up again, it froze a little while later.

2. Open up the case and vaccumed out most of the dust. Didn't really help much.

3. Installed a Spyware detector. Nothing found.

4. Ran a Registry cleaner. This did find a decent amount of problems (mostly path not found, etc.) but it still froze after I repaired them all.

It might be worth running disk error checking (right click your drive & choose tools then error checking.

Is the inside of the PC hot even after using your fan?

You could try another spyware detector, I use spybot & malwarebytes anti-malware.

You might want to try cleaning out your internet explorer cache, the new Firefox does use this for some reason.

Good luck!

I have a pretty old computer (Compaq Presario 7000US) and I'm having problems with the system freezing, especially when I browse the internet. I ran a HijackThis system scan, but I have no idea of how to go about interpreting the results. Am I infected with something? Here are the results:

Hi to everybody. I have read tons of forums about this issue and I tried to do what advised, but I couldn't solve this issu with my PC.
I upgraded my system 1 month ago, but I didn't achieve a stable configuration. New componets are MB, CPU, RAM and SSHD. I have suspects on PSU even nominal power should be ok.

---PC Configuration:

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4770K
Asus Z87-K
KHX2133C11D3K4/16GX Kingston HyperX (4x4GB) Memory
Ati Radeon HD5850
Crucial MX100 2.5" 256GB SATA III Solid State Drive
PSU Modular Power Supply ATX 700W
keyboard logithech usb wireless
mouse advent wireless
---Symptoms:

Immediately after the boot, the graphic card fan starts increasing speed and then the system freezes. If I disable and re-enable the graphic card, fan stops overunning immediately and run normally; the system freezes later, randomly.
After 3-4 hard resets, the system asks me to restore the system. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

After downgrading the graphic drivers, the system appeared stable for some days. But now it started again freezing in a different way: rather than increasing the card's fan speed, the graphic card starts flickering. It stops if I disable and re-enable the graphic card, but it starts again after few minutes and the system freezes.

Freezing mechanism: explorer stops responding, but the mouse pointer is still working. After 20-30 seconds mouse freezes as well. It happens randomly in idle state, using google chrome or ... Read more

Unless the new hardware you fitted is almost identical to the old, which I doubt, you should do a clean install of Windows. The main reason is the drivers from the old stuff are still around and are messing things up.

Hello! I've had this problem for a week now.

Sometimes when I run my computer for a longer duration my mouse and keyboard freeze with the screen, I can still hear sounds etc. Then all of the sudden the computer unfreezes and I can continue for a few seconds and experience another freeze. This might continue for a while but after some time the computer freezes again and doesnt unfreeze, I tried unplugging my mouse and then putting it back to the usb port in my motherboard, but this time the mouse doesnt power back on (the light on the bottom doesnt come on).
I havent gotten any error messages from this, this might be because I power my computer off before anything pops up.
Also one wierd thing that happend while this freezing occured was the fact that my cursor didnt change while moving it over hypertext or selecting text. Also the text selector cursor was bugged and it changed colours while moving it accross different colors.

One thing I might suspect is the fact that my CMOS battery is failing, I had a some kind of a corruption error with it earlier and fixed it by reseating the battery. The Motherboard I'm using is an Asus P8Z68-V LX

This is really wierd since sometimes I might be on skype and this happens and I still hear my friend. Just cant talk to him thought.

I hope this problem can be resolved, because it is really annoying and kinda stressfull since I wouldnt want my computer to fail.

-Tuukka

A:Computer freezes frequently, closing all inputs (mic, mouse, keyboard)

It sounds like a possible bad driver, or something became corrupt with either a video or sound driver. I would check and make sure that you have the most up-to-date drivers installed.

You have a lot of stuff running there.

I would start by uninstalling anything that you do not use or did not install in your add-remove programs.

I would definitely get rid of McCraffe. (if you can)_
I would also uninstall windows defender and AVG anti spyware.

I would disable zune, xbox, ctfmon from start up and much much more.

Then I would download and run MRU Blaster and CCleaner

Everthing you installed looks like it is running on start up.

A few days ago I decided to do a clean reinstall of W10 on my PC using the Windows media creation tool. Promptly after reinstalling the OS onto my PC it continuously freezes at random intervals of time after I start - up the computer and will remain on that state not being able to do anything, prior to the reinstall I have never encountered this problem. Hi Amuraj,

My name is Harish and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.

The system freezing issue happens due to two reasons. 1. If the Harddrive is going bad 2. If the operating software is corrupt. For isolating the issue can run a diagnostic test by holding the Fn key and starting the system. If the test passes the Operating system is corrupt, if the test fails harddrive has to be replaced

Please let us know the progress

Okay, so I've had my XP for...two years? The major programs I have are iTunes, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Works. I don't know my RAM space, but if I check it, I will most likely freeze. Whenever I'm on the internet, it's fast for like..ten minutes, but then it freezes and I'm unable to do anything.
Oh, and when I first turn on my computer, it takes literally 10 minutes for my computer to be completely loaded. Sometimes it's more than 10. I've defragmented my files (and the lines are all..colored and looks really bad) many times, I'm doing the disc cleanup right now, and I'm removing my programs. I've deleted like ALL of my documents and stuff. I don't know what else to do! My computer runs like it's twenty years old! Please, any suggestions? I might just restart it, but I don't even know how to do that.

Hello,

I my computer has been freezing and unfreezing every so often. Sometimes it even shuts down on its own. I replaced the power supply with a 450W Enermax. I only have 1 optial drive and 1 IDE HD. It is a AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 64Bit, 512MB Ram, ATI 9600 Video Card, Onboard Sound. My problem is as follows... I turn the computer on and after a few seconds it starts freezing and unfreezing and it makes it very difficult to use. Then after a few minutes of using Microsoft paint I get an error. o.o This is kind of weird, now. Windows explorer freezes up my computer and takes up 99% of my CPU, but most of the time I can just open the task manager and right click on explorer.exe and click on "End Process Tree.", and things will unfreeze. Explorer closes, but I can reopen it and things work normal. Until I try to open a program, (for example AOL.) Internet Explorer seems to work just find, and most Windows-Based programs. But everything else freezes my computer as soon as I open it.

I've tried running a repair installation on my computer, and that didn't work. And I'm desperately trying to avoid losing all of my files ( I have way too many to back up, all of which I really would rather not like to part with.)

If there's anyone who has any idea what's going on, and further more if there's any way for me to go about fixing the matter, it would be much appreciated..

Have you tried the standard troubleshooting measures? Defrag, Scandisk, Update drivers, Windows update....etc?

So I am certain that this is malware related, because it started right after I tried installing a free version of Microsoft word that a friend linked me who works there.

The issue is that my computer's windows explorer will freeze occasionally every 10 minutes or so, and I will have to wait for it to unfreeze after 30 seconds and everything to "catch up" so to speak.

I have a Hijack This log ready, and am ready to post specs if needed.

Thank you for any help!

So occasionally now, when I am using my computer, it will freeze within a program, and everything will be inaccessible within this freeze time. It lasts around 30 seconds and happens every once in a while.

I am certain that this is malware of some kind. I just don't know how to fix it because I have tried to use Super Anti Spyware and nothing shows up. I am just new to this whole malware-fixing process.

I have a HijackThis log ready, and I am prepared to list my system specs, just not sure what you would need.

Thank you for any help!

My computer freezes up sometimes when I open up Explorer windows, such as my downloads folder. There is also another related problem where when I click save in ANY program, the save button in the dialogue doesn't work, and I have to close the dialogue and reopen it to make it work. Sometimes it freezes all together on the save dialogue -_- this is getting irritating..

So I'm in a bind at the moment. On Sunday, after attempting to run Dragon Age : Inquisition, I had realized that I never updated my GPU drivers since 2012 (Catalyst 10.12).
First attempt at installation led to a crash and black screen. Subsequent attempts to uninstall via Catalyst Installation Manager (via Control Panel/Programs) were unsuccessful (got several "Error applying transforms" msg boxes).

I then downloaded Display Driver Utility to the driver and after unsuccessfully installing 15.7 which resulted in my computer freezing on the login screen (or alternatively, black screen with cursor), removing the Intel HD4000, removing 15.7 and installing 14.12, uninstalling 14.12 with the occasional bouts not being able to boot past login in Safe Mode. I realized I had 4 Windows updates I never installed.
They are (KB3064209), (KB2901983), (KB3048761), and a Intel Graphics update. After installation of the above updates, I was able to log in.

This evening however, I suffered two freezes and a failed safe mode boot before being able to get past the login screen again. I'm honestly pretty sure the reason for these freezes are my drivers, but I'm boggled on how to fix this w/o reverting to by 10.12 drivers.

Attached is the DxDiag.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Hello.

This is a strange and extremely irritating problem I've come across just yesterday. I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out the issue with all of my ability and knowledge, but I still can't figure out what's going on. Basically, pretty much everything will stop working (including the desktop and taskbar and all applications and windows I have up) and freeze (not respond) for around 5 minutes or so and then will unfreeze. This happens way too often and is very annoying. I'd provide specs but right now I'm on my laptop trying to figure things out. It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. It's getting to the point where I can't stand using the PC anymore. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Registry cleanup and fixed issues with CCleaner
- System Restore
- Updating video drivers (except it didn't need updating)
- The repair sequence during startup.
- Scanning for Malware and Viruses, both my programs not coming up with anything after a full scan.
- Defragmentation

Thanks for your guys' help!

Bring up the Task Manager, leave it on the side as you work, and see what process is eating up cpu time when it freezes.

For about a month my pc has been freezing at odd times. There seems to be no related program or time when it freezes. There are no error messages generated. I may be doing a long backup and the computer will freeze during the backup. I may be running two separate programs at the same time and my computer freezes. If I run a progam that takes a long time to complete, the pc will freeze. Each time I have to reboot and restart the program or backup. I have windows xp professional with sp3 installed. I have a lot of programs on my computer as well. My pc has about 4GB of memory. I am using a USB harddrive backup system along with Acronis True Image but I have also tried Bounceback backup software as well. The same thing happens. I have run registry cleaners several times but the problem continues. I would appreciate any suggestions to solve this problem. Regards, mnedil
