Unable to download security updates or go to safe mode

Q: Unable to download security updates or go to safe mode

Hi I've been struggling to remove some kind of virus from my computer. It redirects browser windows and won't let me download or update any malware removal tools. I used my laptop to download malwarebytes (not up to date b/c of update issue) and ran it but got no threats. Since the problem continued, I ran malware bytes in safe mode. It found 4 threats and I deleted these. Afterwards the problem remained and I now cannot enter safe mode.

I also tried booting from an AVG recovery CD, scanned and found one threat, deleted, problem remains. I can get into windows explorer but it will no let me edit All Users/Application Data.

Here is my hijackthis log.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

How do I fix error code 0X80200010? I've used auto-update for years with no problem, but have not received the last 10 security updates. I'm running XP home SP3 with Avast! antivirus, Threatfire, and PCTOOLS firewall. I have not reinstalled Windows for a couple of years. My last security update was on 3/11/10, after that I received an update on IE8 on 4/1/10. Now when I go to the update site, the new ones download okay, but do not install successfully. I've followed the instructions to stop auto-update, install wups2.dll and restart auto-update (indication was, this was successful) however this hasn't helped. The other cited examples of the causes of the problem don't seem to apply to my situation. I think I have looked at everything MS has listed as possible causes and solutions. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I had encountered a serious problem. My computer had suffered from many kinds of viruses and my 1st use nod32 but the antivirus can't detect them. And then, I changed my antivirus to kaspersky internet security. It detected them but can't disinfect or delete them. Whenever I try to run a full scan on my computer, the kaspersky stuck. I put exclusion on the files that the kaspersky stuck on scanning it but they are too much. It's stuck on scanning it on my computer but when I scan it on kaspersky online scan, the file is clean. I decided to boot into safe mode using the msconfig method. As a result, I can't even boot into safe mode and I see a BSOD with this error : STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF741B84C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Now I cant even boot into the window as I already tick /SAFEBOOT in the boot options. Everytime I switched on the computer, it automatically boot into safe mode. I tried the select the option Startup with Last Known Good Configuration but it never works out. Before this, I also ran a error-checking on my Local C disk but the problem still persists.

I tried to repair it using xp disc. But the window can't detect my hard disk. I modified my BIOS settings and finally repair it at Microsoft Window XP Recovery Console. This is the link that I used to follow http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/

However, this whole thing didnt work out for me. It just added another OS selection in the OS menu during startup. The OS name is exactly ... Read more

My PC has been infected with 'Internet Security' and i have followed all the steps on
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-internet-security-2012 but have not successfully got my computer back.

I located the virus files and rename to virus and virus2.

I then ran:
FixNCR.reg
tdsskiller.exe -> can't load driver -> does not find a rootkit infection
Malwarebytes anti-malware -> 38 days old version as i cannot access internet -> found and remove internet security (log attached)
Spyware doctor -> failed to set up due to lack of internet. starts automatically when booting up the PC.

they seem to have stopped 'internet Security' however i cannot connect to the internet, cannot enable mcafee, cannot boot on safemode (get blue screen saying i should check my computer for viruses or recent changes), cannot do system restore to a previous date. I suspect some sort of stubborn rootkit infection.

Please help me to remove this virus.

My friends sister managed to pick up the System Security malware. The malware blocks all programs and limits what I am able to open. I am unable to install programs (MBAM, etc.) I am also unable to book the computer in safe mode. I get a 0x0000007b notification.

I don't know what she might have done before I got my hands on this.

Steps please before I try things and make this worse!

Hi

Running Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001 on a Compaq Presario A900 Notebook PC

My laptop began freezing this morning. Shortly after it is up and running (couple of minutes) it freezes. I maybe able to connect to the internet and load a webpage or two but then it freezes. I may be able to start an antivirus scan but then it freezes. After it freezes the mouse is able to move the cursor around the screen but unable to activate anything. Unable to run Task Manager.

At this point the only option is to hold the power button to force shutdown.

Ran the System Check on initial power on and everything checks out OK, no memory errors, hard drive errors etc.

Went into safe mode, tried a couple system restores......problem continues
Cleaned up hard drive, deleted unneeded files, uninstalled programs no longer needed....problem continues
Defragged the hard drive......problem continues
Unable to fully complete Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan
Unable to fully complete AVAST Antivirus scan

Initially I was able to work in safe mode for up to 20 minutes or so but that has diminished with each forced reboot/shutdown, now safe mode only stays active/available/working for a few minutes at a time.

Any thoughts on what to try next?

Thank you,
JD

A:laptop freezes shortly after startup, in safe mode, unable to run security tools

My first thought would be to post this in the 'Am I infected?' forum on this site. Maybe someone else here has a better idea.

One potential way to prove it's a Windows based infection would be to try a Live Linux distribution and see if that runs.

When you get a chance, get Service Pack 2 installed.

A:Laptop freezes shortly after startup, also in safe mode, unable to run security tools

HiI have fixed my problem. www.malwarehelporg/cannot-boot-into-safe-mode-2010.html showed me how to run Malwarebytes from safe mode with a command prompt.I was unable to complete the scan (almost did but not quite) before it froze again but Malwarebytes had found an infection. I restarted into safe mode with a command prompt again and paused the Malwarebytes after it found the infection and dealt with it. It found PUP.radmin, I was able to delete it. When I booted back into windows vista it still froze. I went back to safe mode with command prompt and ran some tools such as Advanced System Care and defrag and booting back into windows has been stable ever since. I have also installed the service pack 2 for vista. I will check out the posts on keeping your computer safe from future MalWare infections. Thanks,JD

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Lenovo will also come with a trial ware program - cant remember which
I would also remove AVG 2013 - using the removal tool - see below

have a read here and post back as much info as possible

can you connect to the router with a cable and if so does that work in normal mode ?

Hi there, I'm trying to fix my Aunt's windows XP computer. I downloaded MBAM as she had previously mentioned getting a call on the phone from someone in India telling her she needed to pay $160 for her antivirus or her computer would shut down.

I ran MBAM and it took about 8 hours to scan, and at the very end found a bunch of results. I told it to get rid of them, and then restarted. Upon restarting, it also ran a disk check, and after that finished, it booted up but took forever to load. Upon loading the taskbar showed up for a brief moment, then disappeared, and I can't seem to get it to run from the task manager either. It brings up the explorer.exe process briefly, then without ever loading the taskbar, it ends the process.

I got a bit worried at this point and tried to restart in safe mode. However, when I do that, it loads a bunch of drivers and then stops. It never finishes loading. (this happens in safe mode with and without networking)

I also tried restarting back into normal mode and running avast through command prompts, but it doesn't do anything and I also got errors stating that a particular file is missing.

What should I do next? I was going to attempt running combofix from my flash drive, but when I try to CD into the drive, it says the drive isn't ready. If you have any suggestions on what to do, let me know, thanks.

A:Unable to boot in safe mode, explorer.exe not loading in normal mode

What is the brand and model of your computer, or motherboard, and what sort of Windows operating system disk you you have... OEM, Dell, Gateway, HP, or other recovery disk?
And how old is your system?
You either have a bad infestation, or a defective hard drive, video graphics, or memory module.
We can perhaps help more when we know what you have available.

I just recently installed the Windows 8.1 update earlier today. Immediately after the required restart, my computer has not been working properly. As soon as I log on, the desktop flashes back and forth from the desktop picture to the color of the menu background. It flashes back and forth pretty quickly and while this is happeneing I can't perform any functions. When I try clicking on the internet or anything else it is nonresponsive. I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. I then attempted to restart my computer in safe mode but immediately got a pop up saying: "The instruction at 0x35f7649c referenced memory at 0x35f7649c. The memory could not be rewritten. Click OK to terminate the program." After clicking OK, the popup immediately came back and neither clicking OK or pressing the X in the upper right would make it go away and it would just immediatley pop back up and I could not click on anything else while it was up. Also while in safe mode, my desktop shortcuts and desktop picture were again flashing. I'm concerned I have a virus but not exactly sure how I got it or how to fix it. I have Webroot installed and it alerted me to a potential virus a couple days ago but when I tried to fix it, it said something about my product key expiring it and since it wasn't causing my any problems I ignored it. I've left automatic updates off so far because of what I've heard. One friend of mine had one of the updates installed on his computer, and his internet stopped working so he did a system restore and was fine. Another friend had a problem too, but I forget what it was. I've also heard from a few other people online with having the updates screw something up on their computer. So is it really worth it to install the updates? Has anyone else had problems with them? Thanks!

ok, the thing is i had this virus on my pc which i learned after a lot of research required me to boot in safe mode in order to remove it. The problem is, while trying to boot in safe mode several times, my computer just crashes to a blue screen. I then learned that besides pressing F8 there was another way to boot in safe mode by going to "Run" and typing msconfig and booting it manually that way. Unfortunetly, this technique ended in the same crash. By now i realize that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to boot in safe mode. My one major problem now is, that i CANNOT BOOT IN NORMAL MODE EITHER. I guess by trying to boot in safe mode using msconfig, i've changed my pc's settings to where now, normal mode=safe mode, and obviously, safe mode keeps crashing. As of now i cannot boot my pc AT ALL. I thought there might be a way to recover/fix safe mode by using the windows cd, but i really dont know what to do. i hope you guys can help me out, thanx

No need for follow-up or help with this issue. It's not a malware problem. I had corrupt and missing files causing my problem. I worked with the Microsoft support team, and they helped me find the problem. Unfortunately, we couldn't get all the missing files. So, they are going to help me upgrade to Win 7.

I must say that they are rapidly changing the image of Microsoft from being an unresponsive software company to a customer focused company. I have never gotten such great service from any vendor, and at no cost to me. These guys went the extra mile for me. They were very responsive and skillful. And they are a Microsoft overseas outsource team. Forget what you heard about outsourced teams. They speak better English than some of us in the USA...very skillful and a job well done. :-)

Acer 5252 - auto-processed Win7 Home Prem (64 bit) updates. System started running slowly - figured it was from some large games so deleted them and defragged - system progressively worse - no viruses detected. Started getting error when trying to CtrlAltDel to get to task mgr to see what processes were running - error was "The logon process was unable to display security and logon option...". Reboot brings up Windows with no errors but takes 5-10 min for anything to start, and then hangs again. Can only shut down with power button. Starting in Safe Mode (w/ or w/o Networking) works but restore points are missing, so can't revert (I had plenty of room so not sure why the old points were deleted).

Dragged out my old Acer 6530 - Win7 Home Prem (32 bit) - haven't used it since around Jan so it was several updates behind. Worked fine until Windows updates applied - then same behavior as the first laptop. Was able to revert back to prior Windows and problems were gone.

...er.. did you notice the inconsistency?

Situation: Set Windows Updates to notify, not download. Require password to log in. With pending windows updates, go to safe mode. MS use exactly the same screen as in normal mode, including the notification of updates and instruction to go to PC Settings to install them.

...er.. but it's Safe Mode... please sir, I haven't got an internet connection...

I've been working on my father's computer (an HP pavillion zv5000), and realized that he had some Windows XP updates to be installed, so I decided to download them. What I didn't realize at the time was that he hadn't installed any updates in almost 2 years (though Automatic Updates appear to be enabled). When I rebooted after the installations were complete, I could not start in Normal Mode.

When starting normally, I get a black screen with white writing saying that
there's been a problem with the computer (can't remember word-for-word), and gives me the option to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and another safe mode. It also offers to start up with the last settings that worked, or normal mode. When I try to boot up in normal mode, it sends me back to that same screen, and likewise when I try to boot with the last settings. Now it only works in Safe Mode.

I'm not really sure what's happened, and if it's related to the updates or if it could be a virus (I got a similar screen when my own computer had a virus a few years ago). I'd appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance

Do you have a Windows disk or can you borrow one? What happens when you select safe mode?

I'm wanting to do some work under the hood of my new T410s working in 'Safe Mode', but holding down F8 during the restart gives me a "Stuck Key" error message, and then I'm led directly into the BIOS/Start Up editing area.   Any recommends about how to get around this weird little detour?

Hello,

I recently got a virus and I cleaned the majority of it with combo fix and decided to go into safe mode to do a full computer scan. I used MSconfig to make it boot into safe mode. When I got to the log on part in safe mode my password didn`t work. I tried the user name "Administrator" and it didn`t work either. I tried both usernames without passwords and it didn`t work aswell. I need to get back to normal mode so I can get rid of the rest of the viruses and I got exams which are in my computer and I need to complete it.. Please help me~

You should be able to get to your exams in safe mode, shouldn't you?

We cannot help folks defeat passwords. Against forum rules, for good reason.

now I am getting this "please choose your boot device " (1: CD rom 2: HDD 3: FDD 4: you name it) instead of a list with safe mode when I press F8 at start up.

now what ? >< how am I suppose to get into safe mode now ?

thank you very much

add: I am using winxp sp2 on a asus mb

A:Unable To Get Into Safe Mode Now ><

Most likely you're pressing F8 too soon and you're getting the boot device selector for the BIOS.

Try pressing F8 the moment that the first Windows screen starts to show - this usually works (although the timing is a bit tricky).

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel mother board and CPU. I'm unable to get into safe mode using keyboard (F8 or F5). I have tried with F-lock on and off, no help. When I power off at the surge protector and turn power back on, (reboot) I get the option of safe mode. What in the heck I'm doing wrong.

A:Unable to get into Safe Mode

Layback,
I do not know what you are doing wrong, but--

Power on you computer and start tapping the SPACEBAR.

let me know the results.

Hi and welcome to TSG.
You will need the Vista install DVD - to try a Start Up Repair.
Or have you already tried that?

Suebaby41 was helping me with a malware problem and my inability to get into safe mode. She suggested I post here and refer a link to our conversation in the malware area. The problem with inability to get into safe mode starts on page one of the thread and continues to page two where she refers me here. Here is the link. This is my grand-daughter's computer.

It is a Compaq Presario SR2037X, running XP Media Center Edition 2005.

When I was called to take a look at it I observed a couple of things that caused me some concern:

1. No power on indication and no fans running.
2. Two keyboards attached, the original PS2 and a newer USB one.

Problem 1 was resolved by replacing and upgrading the OEM PS with a 350 Watt Antec PS.

Unplugged the original PS2 keyboard.

The computer now boots as far as the Compaq Splash Screen, before windows begins to load it displays the following:
Windows could not start because missing or corrupt file....

<Windows Root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please install copy of this file...
This appears on a black screen and the computer is locked up at this point. A physical shut-off is the only option.

If I insert my XP-Pro disk it will load far enough to generate the "Press any key to continue booting from CD" when

I hit the space bar a short series of periods (6) appear and then the afore mentioned error message is displayed.

Every resolution I've been given for the ntoskrnl problem starts out with booting into "Safe Mode" which I can not do.

I find myself between a rock and a hard place.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance - Jim
P.S. I also noticed that none of the Splash Screen options (ESC to Boot Menu, F1 for Setup and F10 for System Restore) work either.

A:Unable to get into "Safe Mode" using F8 key

Hi Jim

That's an interesting situation. There are a few things we can try.

First, it sounds like it might not be responding to the keyboard properly. Have you tried it with the PS/2 keyboard?

The error you are getting indicates that it is seeing a hard drive with a bootable partition on it. The fact that you still get the error with the CD may be because it is not detecting the key press at "Press any key to continue booting from CD" and is proceeding to try to boot from the disk.

The periods you see are usually ntoskrnl.exe beginning to load boot device drivers (one period is displayed for each driver).

This means that NTLDR has already loaded and NTLDR contains the code to detect whether or not the user is pressing the F8 key so that points to a keyboard issue also.

Let me know if the PS/2 works and if it doesn't, does the CAPS LOCK light work on the keyboard when you press the CAPS LOCK key?

James

My computer has been very slow lately. I have tried running simple programs from this site to help with virus protection and now my computer is not allowing me to run any antivirus programs, defragmenting or disk clean-up. I can not access system restore at all or program removal; the computer just freezes. I have tried to run it under Safe Mode but this freezes too. I have Windows XP Professional and would appreciate any help I can get.

A:Unable to run safe mode

Some types of malware will target the safe mode registry keys and others used by Windows so you probably have an infection. Please download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.alternate download linkSave any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator. Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.TFC will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, Java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder.Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.Note: It is normal for the computer to be slow to boot after running TFC cleaner the first time. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.46) and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. HI all...

I had my computer in storage for 7 weeks (on a boat being shipped back to US from the Middle East) and just got it unpacked a few days ago.

It started normally (a BIG relief) then wanted to do updates...48 of them!! So I started the update process but after the updates it will not boot...not normally, not to safe mode. The PC ran a CHKDSK on its own but couldn't boot after the CHKDSK.

I did manage to get Startup Repair to run once and the machine restarted to the Windows splash screen then that disappeared and now all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer which I can move but nothing to point it at.

I cannot get to Sys Restore, safe mode, AV programs, etc.

I DO have a brand new Win 7 disk I got in Dubai a few months ago after having a tech there rebuild the machine with a new HDD and more memory...but it says "OEM System Builder Pack intended for system builders ONLY"...I suppose I could do a clean install with that and I also have a complete backup on an external drive that I made just before leaving Dubai...butI don't want to do that unless I have to.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

Joe

See if the following helps;

Try running Command Prompt from the repair menu and then Check Disk:

1. Insert the Windows 7 Disc and boot from it.
2. In the recovery menu, choose Command Prompt .
3. Type the following command and press Enter:

Chkdsk /r /f
