Shutdown button disappears and networks fails to load on startup

Q: Shutdown button disappears and networks fails to load on startup

Hi all. I am trying to fix my dad's computer that has a curious problem. When the computer boots up, the network fails to load, Norton's anti-virus fails to load, the windows gui is very very sluggish (many times locking up all together when any icons are double clicked), and the shutdown/reboot options are no longer displayed under the start menu. Additionally, ctrl+alt+del fails to open a task manager. When the computer is in this state it is almost completely unresponsive to any input.I have managed to get the computer operating normally by booting into safe mode and either choosing the "load last known good configuration" option or using the system restore. (I have used both these options because neither works consistently, often requiring multiple attempts to achieve a good boot). I have discovered no particular pattern, nor been able to identify any particular restore point that works or doesn't work.My current solution has been to simply not shut down or reboot the computer after I've succeed into getting it to work, however I would like to solve the underlying problem that is causes this.I have tried numerous things, including windows updates, reloading restore points, using Spybot S&D, updating and running a virus scan, all to no avail. I have yet to use HiJack this, so I went ahead and downloaded it and ran the scan, but I could use some help deciphering the results. (Note that I currently have the computer operating normally, but that wouldn't be the case if I were to shutdown or reboot).Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4Scan saved at 3:25:51 PM, on 5/26/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDll32.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PIFSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Brownie\BrstsWnd.exeC:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exeC:\Program Files\Creative\Sync Manager Unicode\CTSyncU.exeC:\Program Files\Brownie\brpjp04a.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\QUICKENW\QWDLLS.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\srvany.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\pvsw\bin\w3dbsmgr.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jucheck.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaws.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaws.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exeC:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.8.0.41\ccSvcHst.exeC:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.8.0.41\ccSvcHst.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exeC:\Program Files\HiJackThis\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exeR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157O2 - BHO: AcroIEHelperStub - {18DF081C-E8AD-4283-A596-FA578C2EBDC3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelperShim.dllO2 - BHO: Symantec Intrusion Prevention - {6D53EC84-6AAE-4787-AEEE-F4628F01010C} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.8.0.41\IPSBHO.DLLO2 - BHO: Java? Preferred Solution: Shutdown button disappears and networks fails to load on startup

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I own a Lenovo G530 which is running Window XP Service Pack 3. I have run into some problem which concerns the USB ports. Yesterday, I inserted a USB flash drive (pen drive) into one of the port. Since then, the My Computer page fails to load. A flash light icon appears and keeps searching for drivers and folders forever. The drivers themselves are accessible through the command prompt or through the Run interface.

After this problem occurred, I tried to shut-down the system but it hung on Saving Your Settings. I did force shutdown through the power button. After re-starting the system, the problem persists. My Computer view is stuck in the scan phase. Also, I am unable to use my USB internet data card.

How can make my computer functional again? Please advice.

A:USB malfunction preventing system shutdown and My Computer page fails to load

first thing i would try is open a command prompt and type in sfc /scannow . this would allow windows to repair some minor problems. if that doesn't work, i would be suspicious of some type of infection.

Client's computer will freeze on startup, background will be visible but with no icons or mouse cursor. I had asked her if she had any sort of Antivirus software that loads during startup. She said she had Command Antivirus installed. We tried rebooting the machine, but with the same results. I am assuming this is a problem with a startup scan of the antivirus software, but am not sure.

I am not quite sure if this is the problem, assistance would be greatly appreciated. She is running on XP currently. I am unable to capture a HJT log or specific specs list for her computer. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Startup Fails to Load Correctly

It's difficult to troubleshoot such a problem remotely; your best bet would be to try a System Restore. This can be done from Safe Mode (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406), if you can load that (then run msconfig > "launch system restore" -- you could also try "clean boot" troubleshooting, but this takes a lot of time and effort.

Safe Mode is available from the f8 boot menu. If Safe Mode fails to load you may try Safe Mode With Command prompt and use these directions to launch System Restore:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304449

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

Also if the Task Manager can be opened when this happens (ctrl-alt-del), the System Restore utility can be launched by selecting File > New task and entering:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Hi,
My MSI CR720 every so often doesnt load past the bios on startup. It runs the bios screen, then the screen goes black and two little white lines appear at the top left, normally they go away and the OS loads but for some reason they somtimes just stay there and nothing happens.
This has happened 4 times within a week, it started about 1 week ago although i cant remember what i changed to the laptop that would cause this issue other than recently i have been installing and playing many old games (age of empires, freelancer and others) which i have to run in compatability mode. My last install was Battle for Middle Earth 2.
I keep a system image backup as well as a third party backu on an external hard drive.
I have also added a partition to my hard drive by shrinking a section of it. I was running out of space on my C:OS partition so i created another and moved documents to it. (i read up about it and its possible this is what is causing my laptop to fail on startup?).
Help would be much appreciated in tracking down the issue as soon as possible as i need my laptop for my uni course! :(
Specs:
Windows 7 64bit
Intel i5 M480 2.67GHz
4 GB DDR3 ram
~300GB Hard drive - partitioned into 3 parts - C:OS is 172GB, D:Data is 66.3GB and my new partition H: 48.8GB.
Ive attached a DXDiag file.

Every morning Windows fails to load on the first start-up attempt of the day. Please note that after I am able to get it to load, I can turn off, turn on, or restart with no issues the rest of the day. It is literally only on the first start-up of each day. As soon as it starts to load windows it will reboot and go straight to windows recovery with an option to load windows normally or check for problems.

Each time "Start Windows Normally" is selected it will either reboot as soon as windows stats to load, BSOD, or once in a while it will load windows where it will BSOD the second anything is clicked. As soon as it BSOD, the next start-up I can load windows normally and everything will be fine rest of the day.

If I have it check for a problem it will show it is checking and then ask if I want to restore to an earlier time. As this is a fresh install, I will select "no" and it will begin to attempt a repair. If I let it run the full course it will always return a message stating nothing could be repaired. After which, I can start windows normally with no problems. I have also learned that in the mornings I can choose to repair and immediately restart computer once it begins to check for problems and it will load windows normally.

Other than that there are basically no issues. I can turn off and on rest the day without an issue. There is one other thing, I have noticed if I leave it idle for a very long time (most the day), every now and t... Read more

Both of these were related to pool_corruption. Since memtest has passed I would suspect a driver. To work out which please run driver verifier. My gut feeling is it is your Avast but no definitive info yet.

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash... Read more

Hello all.  First time poster here.  I am having issues getting my Toshiba to load windows.  Here is the rundown:

Successfully started computer and loaded Windows (Windows 7 64-bit btw), but noticed that certain stock applications would not work (calculator, paint, windows explorer, etc..).  Installed several Windows updates that have been waiting to install for a while (not sure what they were exactly) and shut down.  Upon attempting to restart, I was presented with the startup recovery tool.  It failed to fix the problem.

Here is what I have tried and the results:

Complete shut down with AC power and battery removed for >1 minute - Didn't fix the issue
System restore - Fails to successfully restore (tried twice using two different points)
Safe mode - Won't allow me to
Memory check - Ran, rebooted, and failed to fix the issue

After checking around, I found FRST.  Here is a scan log:

Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST.txt) (x64) Version: 25-12-2013

I believe this problem was caused by CCleaner/Revouninstaller, that's the only thing that did changes to my system before this happens.

I tried searching for solutions on Google, and I found this guy with the exact same problem. http://www.pchelpforum.com/xf/threads/bad_system_config_info-stop-0x00000074.97674/
(Screenshot provided by him, perhaps this can help better understand my problem)

Tried System Repair/Restore and Safe Mode, none worked.
I followed up with a " Last known good config " option, but the problem is still there.

I hope to receive help soon, days without computer is torturing me. Please assist, thank you in-advance!
Edit: I really do not wish to reformat as I do not want to lose precious data. To clarify, I'm currently using another computer to post this.

Hello, I recently installed something called libusb, but when I shutdown I get the "blue screen of death", so I wondered if I'm able to unload libusb when I shutdown and load it when i start again.

And no, I must have it, so I can't uninstall it

A:Unload a driver at shutdown and load it at startup

Well unless anybody has a better idea and if you cant live without it.

Go to services and set it to autostart (If it doesnt cause problems on bootup)
That will load it automatically on boot.
You will then have to stop the service manually (from services again) before you shut down.
Not very good if you reboot a lot...it might be a temp solution.
I don't know of a way to have it unload automatically before shutdown...

I think the shutdown button should have a confirmation prompt with a delay, whether on the Sign on page or the Start menu to allow for recovery when inadvertently clicking it.

I know I can create my own shutdown, sleep, etc. but that does not resolve the issue, unless the shutdown buttons are disabled on the sign on page and the START menu.

If that cannot be realized the next solution is to make sure the shutdown button is set to other than shutdown by default(yes, it will not say shutdown then, maybe 'sleep') and shutdown is in the sub-menu instead.

'lock' is not an option as some had suggested, unless it can be swapped with the 'shutdown'

I now found out they can be swapped... but it is misleading, because I thought the Power Button is the PHYSICAL button on the hardware... thus when I press it now it will cause a lock?!

When I start my computer (a four-year-old Dell which runs Windows XP Professional), it loads without any problem, but when Windows starts, it won't display my desktop icons or the Windows bar that's normally at the bottom of the screen (including quick launch, the start button, the clock, etc.). The only thing that is visible on the screen is the My Documents folder (not Desktop or My Computer or anything else...always My Documents). Of course, from there I can navigate around and get things done, but it's obviously not ideal.

I originally posted the problem on the BC Malware forum (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic365343.html), but none of the scans and logs turned up any malware, so the person who was helping me suggested I take the problem to this board.

I think that's everything...please let me know if there's anything else I can add to make the problem clearer. Thanks for your help!

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "directdlr.com/....." in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:

Not long ago (a week and a half or so) I was playing Payday 2 and my computer froze, I turned off my computer to restart it and could not load my computer past a pre-loading windows black screen where the mouse was not showing. I then tried booting my computer in various ways (safe, with and without networking etc) and they worked, however I believe one of my drivers failing to load was the reason for my "Windows Normal" startup to fail. I eventually decided through, I then looked at using the system restore point function in order to hope for some success. The system restore function when I restored to; a week ago, two weeks ago, did not seem too alleviate my issue much, it did however allow me to load windows but almost immediately after using the machine for 2-5 minutes I would have a frozen screen again. I then eventually decided to just factory reset the machine out of desperation, the factory reset eventually happened successfully and I was able to load windows and login into my new user successfully, as I learnt that I had to reinstall my graphical drivers I then attempted to put in various CD's in in order to install these drivers, eventually when I figured out the order of CD's that I needed to install for my games to load properly, I then resumed my activities on my pc (such as gaming, browsing etc).

Flash forward to the second factory reset, this one happened due to a very similar freezing problem yet again, and again I decided to turn off my computer ... Read more

Ive seen this on the forum alot but found no resolve, mine is like this, Everything will be fine for a good while and at some point when I switch to the start menu after scrolling my mouse out of the bottom left corner and off of the start button, the task bar and start button will drop down and dispensary like it should. However when I scroll over the corner again, it doesn't pop back up, I cant swipe up or down for my charms bar on the right or see my running apps on the left everything is unaccessible. It can be fixed temporary by re logging but its only a matter of time before it happens again. I have done many hd wipes and re-installations to resolve this issue. Nothing works. I have some apps installed and some drivers. I also did a bios update and some firmware updated and at this point im thinking it may be them but I have no idea. I cant clean boot to troubleshoot because sometimes the bug wont show up for a whole day. Im a new win 8 user and I like the changes made since win 7 but this is a massive problem for me and I am just pulling my hair out here

Hello Kupsey, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Does pressing the key allow you to toggle back to your desktop, and have them work normally again?
For the taskbar on the Start screen, you should be able to also press the + T keys to see it again.
Taskbar - Open in Windows 8.1
For Charms bar, see if pressing the + C keys will open it.
Charms Bar - Open in Windows 8
For app switcher, see if pressing the CTRL + + TAB keys will open it.
Switcher - Open in Windows 8

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Can someone tell me why on some of the websites that I access the back, forward, refresh and stop buttons disappear from the address bar while other websites display them as they should?

This site (Techguy.org), for example, doesn't show any of those buttons with the address bar. I have to select View/Go To/Back in order to backup a page. There's a few other sites that do the same thing but I can't remember exactly which one's right now. Is it something in my Internet settings that I need to adjust or is it the actual webpage that I'm viewing?

On the taskbar at the bottom a button will appear with just a picture of a page on it, no writting...then it disappears. It happens so fast, i can't click on it...Maybe that's a good thing. The worksheet button disappears after macros runs. I'm the IT repair guy, not an Excel expert, so I’ll describe this as best I can. I understand this file basically does a checksum on a bunch of files. At the end, it is supposed to display some VBA script macro buttons, but all I get are some squares with Xs in them indicating an image is missing. The same file works on other computers, just not this one. I've uninstalled/re-installed Office but no help. I took a working file from another computer but it doesn't work on this one.

I have to assume there nothing wrong with the file or Excel, but something set wrong on this computer.

A:Solved: Excel macro button disappears

I am just guessing, but it sounds like you may have a custom button set for the macro and it either doesn't exist on that PC or does but in a different location.
Check this out
http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelTips/excel-toolbar-buttons.html
and this
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1060039.html
You may just want to make your own button and give it the same name as the one that the macro is looking for.

Iíve been trying to figure out this 2003 Microsoft Word problem forever now. Hereís the best way I can explain it; if anyone would like me to elaborate please ask and Iíll try to answer you question.

We have a company slogan running down the left-side of the Word Document I reuse, I assume that it is a template, canít be too sure though. When bringing up the footers toolbar section and Iíll try to change the page numbering to x of y and select different first page, the entire slogan disappears! Iíve tried page breaks (to which I do not know how to use), other forums only to come up with spacey pages and confusing responses.

If someone can help me on this matter I would be very appreciated.

Hi all,

I've got a dell studio xps 1350 laptop running win 7 ultimate. At home, I have a Verizon wireless modem that connects my simple home network together (not domain, just work group), which has three other XP machines /and a lap top connected to. I have no problem with the xp machines, as they can all access the internet and each other and even the windows 7 laptop.

My Win 7 Laptop, however, now refuses to connect to any of the other xp machines (except for the xp laptop); although, it can still access the internet.

The strange thing is that it was able to connect with the all of the other xp machines for about one month before this problem happened. And there was no apparent reason for it happening--i.e., I did not install any new software, or do anything.... it just now refuses to connect--even though it sees the other XP machines.

And the other strange this is that now it refuses to connect to my office network server, which it was before.

About two months ago, this exact same problem occurred, and I fixed it by wiping the c drive and re-installing windows 7.

I've tried all the limited tricks I know to fix this:
1.) turned off the windows firewall, UAC, defender, bonjour softward, and ESETs AV and firewall.

2.) I've tried using both the Cat 5 cable, as well as the usual wireless connection.
I can't bare to wipe and re-install Win 7 again, and can't figure this out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks so much in advance.

Does anyone know how to solve this? It would be highly appreciated!

I don't see a problem, the Start button is fully visible.

You can post images here rather than use another site. Click on the Go Advanced button then use the Paperclip icon to browse for and upload images. Once uploaded, close the Paperclip window then click on the arrow to the rioght of the Paperclip icon and you will see the image you uploaded. Click on it to insert into your post.

Hello more knowledgeable person than myself. I've been having trouble trying to get my computer to boot; I'd noticed a drop in performance (still unsure why) so decided to boot up in safe mode and poke around - it was not my original intention to install Advanced SystemCare 5.3.0 but somehow it happened. Wireless connections can and will be broken when the machine goes to sleep or hibernation, unless the settings were changed to allow the wireless NOT to go to sleep also.

Windows 7 and Vista also like to have the SAME user name and same REAL password on ALL machines. These accounts do NOT need to be the active ones, just on every machine.

hi, what device are you using ,laptop ,or notebook, or tablet .
the only way I know is to set the router it belongs to don't broadcast ssid, you do this by going into the routers setting ,using its IP address usually shown on the bottom of the router ,I have never had to do this myself ,but I think from what I read ,it will still show the icon just no name,if that network isn't yours then iam not sure but I think there are other ways of blocking it,like setting wifi to only show secure or unsecure ,easiest thing is just google what you want and it should find answers and descriptions of what you want to do .

I've been using Windows 7 (64-bit) Snipping Tool for years and suddenly today, when I launch Snipping Tool, the dialog box only shows the Title Bar and not the option buttons like New (with the drop-down arrow, etc) AND if I do get a screen capture, the Snipping Tool editing window (where you can highlight or use the pen) no longer allows me to change the type of image I capture (rectangle, window, etc.)

I have read many other posts here and else and nothing has worked. I've done:

- System Restore
- SFC /SCANNOW - no problems were found.
- downloading someone else's Snipping Tool and replacing the one I had in the System32 folder
- Went into Control Panel and made sure the Tablet PC open IS checked
- did a registry scanner - it cleaned up legacy stuff
- virus checker - always running and no issues
- have rebooted in Safe Mode, where the same problem occurs
- Did a System Restore to a few days ago - this did not fix the issue

NOTHING has corrected this.

Does anyone have any ideas besides what I have noted above and besides recommending other programs? I have SnagIt - but sometimes the Snipping Tool is perfect for certain things. Mostly, I am perplexed by this sudden issue.

I have attached two files to show what my Snipping Tool now gives me.

Thank you for your help on this. This is really perplexing.

This is ridiculous. Am using IE7 on Gateway Essential 500 Desktop Computer. Windows XP Pro, SP3, 256MB RAM, Intel III Processor.

When I try and open IE7 with or without add-ons, it opens then disappears, or just opens and sits there, blank. (mostly it disappears). I can't even get into the "internet properties" cause when I try to, it just gives me a quick hourglass then disappears - so I can not reset IE7.

So, I ran AVG8.5 virus scan - nothing. Ran Spybot S&D, nothing. Ran SuperAntiSpyware - nothing. Ran Spy Doctor - nothing.

Next I reinstalled IE7 - didn't work.

NOW WHAT?

Obviously since I was able to reinstall IE7 (after downloading from internet on a different computer then transferring the file to the computer) I DO have internet connection - really, I do! Just NO working browser, specifically IE7.

No, I do not want to upgrade to IE8. I want to repair IE7, or find out what the hec is going on and fix it. I am comfortable with working inside the regisrty.

Please help.

Thanks.

Ps. I CAN browse the internet if I go through AOL.

My internet connection is cable at 20mps+

Last year I had the laptop sent to Lenovo to replace my screen because my brightness would not change. Since then, the wifi adapter would "disappear*" randomly, though not often, sand I would have to reinstall the intel WLAN drivers to fix it. I though it wasn't going to be a problem. However, in the past two days, the wifi driver would disappear every time I turn on the laptop. Reinstallation did not bring it back and repairs did not work. I had to resort to using an external wireless adapter. The volume down button seems to be stuck down, not physically but more like it was "stickied".*disappear- the drivers would be missing, not disabled. Device manager does not show a wifi adapter existing.

Hello,

I recently got a new computer with a Windows Vista 64 bit OS. I have installed Quickbooks Premier Accountant 2008 but cannot get it to run. It starts to load and then disappears. I have been told there is a patch for this but cannot find it. Incidentally, I have run cmd, sfc /scannow - no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I run windows 7 64bit on my core i3 Lenovo. I have both IE11 and Chrome installed.

About a week ago IE11 suddenly slowed down dramatically. At that stage I upgraded my Bitdefender Internet Security from 2013 to 2014 in an effort to resolve the problem, but without success.

I have tried a system restore, and defragged the hard disk. I also have CCleaner installed, and have run that.

What happens, is that IE11 takes ages to load, and then I get message along the bottom saying that the web page has had to be reloaded. After that I will often get a message saying that the page is being reloaded because of a long running script?? with the option to cancel the script.

Once the browser has loaded, it is almost impossible to use as the cursor keeps disappearing from the place where I am trying to insert text, and I have to push the left mouse key to get it back. One or two letters later it has gone again.

I am obviously doing this query in chrome, as I could never have completed the typing in IE

Any ideas??

I am having issues with the comp, a friend built the computer for me quite sometime ago, for some reason recently I started getting random startup repair pops upon startup.

Today, it went one step further, during the startup repair, it stated could not repair due too then gave a list of error codes all of which were 0x0 until it got down to the bottom where it listed the code 0x490.

When I try to do any type of other repair nothing works. Have tried repairing via command prompt to no avail. I am able to get into safe mode. However if I restart and try to get into normal windows mode, the computer acts like it's disconnected from the monitor, I get the standard win startup chimes, however nothing to the monitor.

Checked vid card, everything seems fine there, and if that was the issue I don't think I would be able to see anything on the screen during a safemode session.

Checked for viruses using Avira, as well as ran a quick scan using malwarebytes, and ran a hyjackthis, posting log here just in case I am missing something.

Hi,

I am trying to help a family member with problems with their laptop. Over the past few months it has been slowing down badly, with anything from photos to websites to excel taking minutes to load. Usually I was able to fix this by identifying the programs slowing the PC and ending them in task manager. In the worst case scenario restarting would fix it

This evening, someone tried to turn it on, and on return found it on start up repair. After waiting a while, I realized it was in the notorious start up repair infinite loop. After turning off the computer, and trying a normal boot, it loaded the windows logo, before going back to the start up failed screen. After choosing the start up repair option, the windows background appeared, but the start up repair failed to appear. Multiple restarts have also failed to have the startup repair appear. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

(Extra point, as it is a family PC, the owner is not too keen on me messing around in bios or safe mode)

A:Computer slowdown, Startup now fails and Startup repair won't launch

Good news to you then, boot into Safe Mode

Start with this as AVG had a recent issue, perhaps you are experiencing the same

Windows 7 stuck on "starting windows" screen - includes a link to how to uninstall AVG if you can't boot into Safe Mode.

Also set the laptop to run a clean startup - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup (keep security software checked)

You can try re-installing AVG or go for Microsoft Security Essentials. Also scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free (you can start the free trial, easy to revert to free when trial is over).
