Lenovo 710 squeaks when charging, crooked hinge

Q: Lenovo 710 squeaks when charging, crooked hinge

My Lenovo 710, intel i5 8gb RAM version has an extremely irritating problem in that it emits a high pitched noise from the left side of the chasis (opposite to the charging port) when charging and powered off. The noise is very high pitched, so much so that it almost tops my hearing limit. (I am 20 years old.) It only occurs when the laptop is off and charging, and occurs regardless of the battery %. I am certain that the noise is coming from the left side of the computer, and not the actual wall wart itself. I am using the charger that came with my brother's old Lenovo 710 pentium laptop, but since the amperage and voltage output seem to be a same, I don't imagine that it's the cause of the problem. Secondly, the right hinge on my computer is crooked. Not sure why, not sure how, but it is. It doesn't seem to affect anything, as my computer still folds and closes properly without any noticeable deformities. Not a big problem, but somewhat irritating.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The high pitched sound is also preset when the computer is still on but with the lid closed, but the volume is much, much smaller.

So I picked up a 13" 720 from best buy yesterday, and so far I love it. The only issue, however, is that the left hinge is at a slant. When I close the laptop, both hinges are pretty easy to "wobble" if I press on them with a little force. https://i.imgur.com/yl2CY40.jpg Is this normal as far as this line of laptops go? Is it worth going in and returning it?

Hi there,I recently ordered an X1 2017 but sent it back for several reasons. One minor issue with it was that the left hinge was slightly crooked. Not by a lot, some might not even notice, but for me not really acceptable for a 2k5? device. Unfortunately it was the first thing I noticed during unboxing. With the lid closed you see that it's not parallel to the rest of the device. Meanwhile I have ordered one again and unfortunately it's the same in terms of crooked hinge. So I'm suspecting a general "problem". Obviously the support team never ever heard of such a thing.Just wondering - how is your's? I don't think I'll do anything about it since I don't think the service team will do a better job than the factory and generally things don't tend to get better by taking them apart. However - just curious if I'm the only one. Cheers, reach

The case isn't cracked or broken.  The plastic part is just coming apart from the metal chasis.  It's really annoying because in order to close the laptop, I have to push down on the plastic to get it to snap into place every time.  Then, when I open it again, the plastic lifts up again.  The laptop is definitely not covered under warranty, so I was trying to find a home solution.  Does anybody know how to fix this problem?  It's a good laptop and I would like to continue using it.

Hi tenniseric98.

Greetings.

You may need to review the disassembly guide from the manual here and likewise the service training module here specially with the hinges and display. Try to inspect any loose screws or probable broken parts that makes opening the lid unstable.

Update us how it goes.

Hi,

Whenever I open my laptop it makes a squeaking noise. I just bought a Sony Vaio Intel Pentium Dual-Core P6000 about 2 weeks ago, and this problem just recently started occurring. Anyone know what I could do to fix this problem ?. Is this a common problem?

A:My laptop squeaks

It is actually the hinges that are making this noise. Anyone have any suggestions on how i can resolve this issue without sending it in to the manufacture?

This is a brand new laptop. Approximately eery five minutes what I presume is the harddrive (front right) on the laptop makes a weird mehanical squeak (like its jarring). Not terribly loud but audible. Almost as though something is rubbing on somthing. The best way I can describe it is similar to a CD skipping (note this is different to the quiet ticking/"trickling" of the harddrive). The laptop is also making an electronic beep periodically which can be heard transmitted through the headphones (like a distorted blip sound) - I'm not sure if this is connected. Are these normal "healthy" signs or something I should be concerned about? I've never heard these noises before on laptops and am just a bit dubious about having a dodgy harddrive and/or motherboard.Thanks.

A:Harddrive "squeaks"/Beeps

Hi @lumier  Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand your concerns about the noise your drive is making. In some cases it could be the sound of normal operation, in other cases it could be a warning of a fault. If you notice the sound seems to occur, after the drive had not been accessed for a period of time, it could be the sound of the drive spinning up again to read. In many cases the power settings on a notebook will result in the drive essentially powering down to save power, and the sound you hear is what happens when you try to access something. Another possibility is the sound of the drive parking the heads for a similar reason. Some drives are completely functional but make different levels of noise when doing these sorts of things. Just to be safe it would be a good idea to do the hardware tests to verify that there is not a problem on your hard drive.Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8) If there is a failure then I would recommend that you call our technical support at 800-474-6836. Hi, I bought a 2 in 1 convertible laptop back in july(2016) and it`s been making the odd loud squeak/beeping noise on occasion since the day I bought it. The screen also blinks out at times and sometimes I hear popping noises when I turn the laptop on, but otherwise it works fine. I was wondering if all of this is normal for this kind of computer, and if not how do I fix it?

after my lovely Alliteration, My problem is this:
Occasionally when i started up my computer, my speakers would make a HORRIBLE loud high pitched screeching noise, that would carry on, then if i turned off my PC and turned it back on, SOMETIMES it would do it, and sometimes it wouldnt.
It seemed very random.

Then it did it again, and so i restarted my computer, but the sound didn't work anymore, except it did through my microphone (which goes through a mixer into my speakers) and my keyboard (which does the same thing) also works.

In device manager everything looks good, it says the device is working correctly (creative sound blaster live! value)

I've re-downloaded drivers, but that hasn't fixed it, neither has shouting or threatening it.

Thanks lots guys,
Bim

I have owned my Dell XPS 9550 for about 8 months now and noticed lately that the keyboard squeaks. It is hardly used so there is no wear on the keyboard at all. I tried calling Dell to troubleshoot the issue and after 1 hour on the phone, the response by the technician was that "since there didn't seem to be a malfunction to the space bar the annoyance would need to be tolerated". In other words there was nothing they could do.
Since I had purchased my laptop at Best Buy there I decided to have them review the problem and was told by a Geek Squad tech they had encountered this issue with the keyboard several times but they were not authorized to replace the keyboard on this laptop. That didn't make much sense to me but I had to accept his response. In desperation I checked online and noticed several articles about a squeaky keyboard on this laptop. Having paid US$2300 for this laptop, why should I accept such mediocrity? What else will go wrong in the near future with this laptop?
Dell doesn't seem to want to take responsibility for this issue even though it appears to be  problem with the components of this laptop. Can someone at Dell please respond and help with a solution to my squeaky keyboard???

Hi I have a question about the hinges on my Lenovo Z51-70 I brought the product new from an online retailer end of Nov 2015 and had a problem with the hinges making a noise (creaking/cracking) noise from the start, As it was close to xmas and I thought it was just a teething issue.  IE they had been over tightened and would loosen up overtime I left it till end of December. I have since been told that hinges are not covered as they are cosmetic items and because they have damage the plastic casing internally I will have to pay for this. There was another issue with the lenovo (the harddrive failed), but have been told they will fix this free of charge. The problem I have is that I have legal rights as a consumer and the item was not fit for purpose on delivery. So how do I get to this fixed free of charge as this damagewasnt done by my mis-use and the item is under 6 months old and would be cover by the Sales of Goods Act. IE faulty when brought Please help as I need to know if the hinges were too tight at the manufacturing stage and when I recieved the laptop it would cause unnecessary wear and tear (durability) on the plastic casing causing it to become damaged.

I am facing a similar issue. Laptop's right side hinge is making a cracking sound. If I see it from the backside, the lower panel cracks open at the side while we open the upper panel.

Some time ago hinge in my laptop started to break, so I used an adhesive tape to hold it. It was fine, but it started to fracture. I thoughtlessly cut tape to see what is going on and accidentally broke it even more. Then I closed the lid, oppened again and  my screen has stopped working. I have tried to don't damage the wires inside while oppening, so I think this is caused because of the broken detector of position of the lid. The hinge can not even raise the screen. Now I am going to buy new hinge and replace it, but I don't know how to replace it without dealing even more damage, fix the wires are damaged and where I can find a cheap one. Using this laptop through HDMI is really unconfortable, so I want to fix it.

Furthermore, soon after plugging in, battery icon shows "filling in process" for few seconds then stopped i.e no filling in process. Furthermore, after whole night charging, battery is now 94% charged, battery 2: 100% charged, fully charged; battery 1: 0% charged, not charging (please attached images). Please guide how to get rid of this problem?Thanking in advance. Shahid

I bought the laptop in April 2016. Started having issues closing the laptop (made grating noise and felt like something inside was crunching) and screen around the hinge sortof came off around March 2017. Was in middle of submitting my PhD thesis so couldn't take it to repair rightaway. A week later, the plastic part outside the hinge broke off and hinge completely came off. Took it to JB HI-Fi on 14th April 2017 and they sent pictures to Lenovo. There are no signs of external damage, laptop has been used and taken care of properly and Lenovo refuses to cover it under warranty. Absolutely unacapptable!! Called Lenovo customer support on 5th May, technician asked for addtional photos of the hinge from all angles to have another assessment. Currently awaiting a call back from that assessment. Looked at other blogs and saw other people having same issues with Lenovo IDeapad 100. Will be reporting the issue to consumer protection affairs as clearly not an issue associated with mishandling or external damage. So frustrating that less than a year and have to deal with this.

Hi,I got some problems with hinges on my yoga 13.3 (i5,8gb ram). One of them just started cracking while opening. The notebook was in ideal condition (no scratches and e.t.c.) and i decided to give it on guarantee service in Saint-Petersburg.Then i have a recall from a manager who said that this kind of problem is not a guarantee case anyway (even without any defects) and the additional expertise is needed. After about 1.5-2 weeks they (Lenovo service SPB managers) said that the cost of the repair is about 12000rub (210$) and i reject this proposal. So I have some questions.1.Is it true that such type of repair is not guarantee case anyway (just crackling).2.Is this value for 1 hinge is real?3.Are guarantee seals still on their places after such diagnostic in official service center?Thank you in advance!

I need help with my Lenovo Edge2. I went to close it the other day and the screen would not move any further, backwards or frontwards. The hinge seems to be slightly crooked now, and when I do try to open/close the lid... it splits away from the actual glass screen. It's currently sitting in a 90* angle because it won't move either way now. I can't open or close it at all. Not exactly sure what happened. I am very careful with all of my electronics and have not dropped it and always keep it in a padded laptop bag when not in use. Photo attached... not my original photo (found here on the forum) but it's the exact same thing mine is now doing.

Hello, I bought my U530 Touch from Vatan Computer in Turkey, on November 2014. Let me first make clear that the law states the standard warranty period as 2 years in Turkey, so my laptop is still under warranty.  What happened to maybe hundreds of people on this forum happened to me, too. One day, a little over a month ago, when I was opening the lid of my laptop, I felt a resistance and the plastic casing on the left hinge cracked slightly as I tried to open my computer. But when it was fully open, the plastic was cracked and would not get back into its original position and it was clear that closing the lid was not an option anymore. I could see the faulty hinge and some cables from the opening between the screen and the cracked plastic. Thankfully, my screen didn't crack like so many users' here and I was able to use my laptop as a desktop for a few weeks until I could take it back to Vatan Computer, lid open, so that they could send it to service.  I received a message 6 days later stating that I had to pay the quarter of what I had payed for my computer (1000 USD) in order to get it fixed because it was "due to user error". Talking to Vatan computer or technical service on the phone was useless. I tried to explain to them that I take very good care of my computer, I have not dropped it, they cannot find any indication of misuse on the machine, but they wouldn't even listen to me. So I contacted Lenovo Turkey for support. They did n... Read more

Hi YOGESHWARD,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It would be best to call in technical support as they would be able to approximate repair duration and options available for your machine.

This would depend on the available service center in your location as generally standard time is 3-5 business days from the time it was received in the repair centers. This again varies with the location and service center.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Recently I have noticed that the hinge of my Y50-70 is slowly opening. Pictures here.  It is a known issue of this model that the left hinge is plauged by a design flaw, which will sooner or later cause the screen to crack/whole hinge area to break/whole screen to dangle on its right hinge only. I seek advice on how to loosen the left hinge nut, as I have read that this would fix the problem I'm facing. Would this prevent any future damage to the laptop caused by the hinge? Could anyone post a step-by-step video detailing how I should loosen this hinge nut and also how to put the laptop back together after that? Please and thank you! PS: I have done a lot of research online but have come up inconclusive on whether loosening the left hinge nut is effective in preventing any future damage. I also failed to find a clear video detailing how to do this. I have never in my life taken apart a laptop.

Unless you have taken that kind of screen apart before, I suggest professional help.  The panels are fragile and the antenna wires need to be removed and rerun.  All that comes after disassembling the body.  If you do it yourself, I suggest taking a lot of pictures during the process, showing how the wires are run.  On that model, some of the wires run under the motherboard and some over.  Unless you have done it, it is hard to figure out.  The pinch connectors on the motherboard are also easy to break.  There are several threads where people break them, ruining the motherboard

Hi - new to the forum but I see others have had this problem.  The laptop has suddenly developed this fault (left hand side of the screen/hinge coming away).  We  have had the laptop just over two years (John Lewis purchase so we are over the warranty perioid).  I am trying to find out if it can be repaired and who I should take it or send it to. Have approached local computer company (independent) and a company at this website http://www.lenovorepairer.co.uk/ to see if either can do it and how much it would cost.  Has anyone asked Lenovo directly to do repair and can it be done? There seems to be a general fault which others have experienced and commented on - our laptop has been used very carefully so really disappointed with this fault.  I doubt I would get any joy from complaining to Lenovo but is it worth a try?Any comments and experiences welcome.

The lightly used screen hinge on my Lenovo Y50 just broke, and like many other people, I contacted Lenovo about it. I was told it was "not really a known issue" and that they wouldn't do anything because it's no longer under warranty. I informed the person that a quick search found hundreds of reports of the exact same problem, including on the Lenovo forum, but they refused to acknowledge anything. How disappointing. I will try again to get a more honest acknowledgement of the issue. If that fails, it will certainly be the last computer I buy from Lenovo. I guess that's the only recourse we have. Just buy a different product next time and hope enough people do the same so that the company eventually changes its practices.

Because of that I went to lenovo technical service (2 times).Firstly, they changed the hinge but the wifi problem kept going because of that I didn't get back the laptop. Then , they said to me we are going to change the wifi module. After the second technical service experience , I got the laptop and I tested it there(in the lenovo technical service). There were still hinge problems and i talked to the technical personel. He told me 'Lenovo can not help you and if you want , you can go to the consumer arbitration committee(in Turkey)'. Before going to the consumer arbitration committee , I just wanted to share this experience because it was the worst experience I've ever had and my problems couldn't be solved. Lenovo was a pretty reliable company for me. However , I could not figure it out and that's why I'm here.

It all happens in Poland, but I am curious as to how customers are treated by Lenovo in other countries.  The story in short: An E31-70 laptop bought 5 July 2017, end of June - does not open due to broken hinge. the shop/service where I have bought the laptop contacts the customer support only to get back reply that I must have act with undue force thus the problem. But there are no traces of "undue force" treatment to the exterior, so upon pointing that out the support changes the tune and says that it is a "secondary failure" not under the warrranty because I should have reported immediately after the first signs that something is wrong. Since the first sign was that day, this is BS, again I point it out but unfortunately in their third communication Lenovo ultimately refuses to repair under warranty. Since I had to open the laptop pretty soon having data on hard disk which I had to access (work deadline), I decided to have my service conduct the repairs and contacted the customer rights advisor. According to her instructions I sent a request for reimbursement after having received the invoice. Lenovo refused again. So I am forced to enter judicial proceedings. I have heard that Lenovo does not try to escape responsibility for shoddy products in such blatant way in other countries. If anyone from the Lenovo is reading this sad story, I would be interested to hear their opinion...Z...
