Opera 10: HTML tags and bookmark icons

Q: Opera 10: HTML tags and bookmark icons

I previously used Firefox, but had some problems connecting to a couple of my favourite websites. They'd just be interminably slow to open and it became a huge annoyance.

So I recently installed Opera 10 and am just getting to grips with it, fixing some annoying defaults (like Password Manager).
I've come across a couple of niggles, and wonder if anyone here can help.

First problem occurs when posting / editing / quoting messages on internet forums. In Internet Explorer and in Firefox, I can see rendered images, smilies and text formatting as I'm writing. I can use CTRL + B to bold etc.
Using Opera, images don't appear - I just see the image's address inside [ IMG ] [ /IMG ] HTML tags. Smilies and text formatting, the same.

This means I have to Preview messages to make sure things look as I intend them to. This is awkward when there's a lot of formatting in a message.
Is there a way to make Opera show images and formatting in forum posts whilst I'm editing, not just after I've posted?
The second issue is to do with the wee icons next to my bookmarks. I have everything checked under Delete Private Data, but unfortunately this deletes the bookmark icons too.
I'm wondering if I uncheck "Clear bookmark visited time" if this would retain the icons? And what exactly is "bookmark visited time"? I don't want to retain any sort of log of when I or other users of the PC visited particular websites, especially not around xmas when people are doing online shopping for pressies!

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Opera 10: HTML tags and bookmark icons

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have found a bug in Opera 11.01 for Mac OS. The bookmark folders in the bookmark menu will not expand to show their contents. I discovered the location where that bug resides. It is in the Opera.app package within Contents > Frameworks > Opera.framework > Versions > A > Opera. If I substitute that item from version 11.00, it corrects the problem with the bookmark folders in the menu not expanding. Opera now identifies itself as version 11.00. Now how can I get Opera to identify itself as the proper version?

A:Mac Opera 11.01 bookmark menu bug

I'd have to know more about the build and packaging processes involved to be certain, but I suspect that the majority of the application's logic resides in that file. This would mean that you're effectively using Opera 11.00 instead of 11.01. Most likely the version number is compiled into that file.

I assume this is on your listed operating system (Mac OS X 10.4.11). Is this correct? Are you using a PowerPC or Intel Mac? Do you have any other accounts on that computer that this issue could be tested from?

I do not appear to be having the same problem as you on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.6.

When I imported my bookmarks from Opera 6.05 to Opera 7.10, I couldn't find the file. When I finally did, I sent it to my desktop. I imported the bookmarks to 7.10. When I delete the file from my desktop, my bookmarks are gone in 7.10. How do I import them again but get rid of the file on the desktop?

Thanks!

A:Opera Bookmark File On Desktop

If you originally couldn't find the file, it sounds like you installed Opera 7.10 for multiple users. If so, I'd uninstall and reinstall for a single user.

I use JetLinks to move bookmarks from one Opera to another. Or you can move them to Netscape or IE with it.

I use Firefox at home, and when I write posts on an internet forum, the formatting is "live" - e.g. if I select a piece of text and click the bold button or press CTRL + B, it will just display in bold: TEXT

At work I use Internet Explorer and when posting messages on a forum (like TSG), when I click the Bold button, the formatting is not applied "live" whilst I'm still writing / editing the message, it is shown wrapped in square brackets: [ B ] TEXT [ /B ]. The same is true of Opera.

Same goes for other formatting - italic, underline, color, font, image, quote, indent and so forth.

I thought these were HTML tags, but I'm now led to understand they are in fact BBCode tags.
Is there a way to make IE (and Opera / any others) act like Firefox does, and display the font as intended whilst the message is still being written / edited, rather than showing the tags?

It sounds like a minor thing, but if there is a huge amound of text formatting in a forum message, using IE can be pretty awkward.

Ta!

Hi,
I wish to use a 3rd parties website from within my VB program.
Basically it has an input box for a date and a submit button, the site then sends you to the relevant page.

My question is:
How do I duplicate what the <FORM> tags do on that site in my VB program?
In other words how do I send a date (or any data) to the targeted script via VB?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Let's say I send a mass email to all my friends. Obviously, they would all have different email accounts, providers, browsers etc etc. If I put those special html tags on them, will everysingle person be able to view it??? I"m not talking about just the <b>bold</b>, or <i>italics</i>. I mean those other things that you don't see to often, such as <s>strike</s> and
<marquee ALIGN="Top" LOOP="infinite" BEHAVIOR="slide"
<BGCOLOR="#FF0000" DIRECTION="left" HEIGHT=30 WIDTH=200>
moving marquee tags too.
</marquee>.

I use yahoomail, and there is a function in yahoo to "allow html tags." I did that, and sent an example to myself. It worked fine. What about other mails, such as Outlook, hotmail, etc etc etc. Are there any limitations this? Will everybody be able to see the effect??

I've got several hundred word documents that I need to do some formatting on. I need to go through them and insert html tags into the document as per below...

a short bold text line

becomes

a short < b >bold text< / b > line

Minus the spaces of course.

At the moment I really only need bold, italic, underline, and unordered lists.

Does anyone know of the easiest and most efficient way of doing this? (Or some macro code?)

I don't have much experience in Word, but currently looking at writing a macro.

You could use a macro like the following. It processes all file in the selected folder.

Code:

If strFolder = "" Then Exit Sub
strFile = Dir(strFolder & "\*.doc", vbNormal)

Hello.

I haven't worked with Word scripts before and don't really know if this is possible, but from what I've read it should be.

Basically, I use a plain text editor when I write on my phone on the go, where I use HTML tags to indicate formatting like this:

Normal text <i>text I want italic,</i> some more normal text

Is it possible to create a script that makes words between <i> tags italic and then remove the tags? (same for <b> for bold and <u> for underlined text) and how would I record or write one?

And also, can I use one to remove blank lines?

I use Word 2010

A:Word macro to format plain text using HTML tags

I imagine you could write a macro to that checks this and does the appropriate action.

You will however have to establich the codes you will be using.

I don't know if there will be a conflict when you open word and depending upon the layout <i> might be interpreted before the macor runs, but I think it's a aquestion of trial and error,

<i> </i>
<b> </b>

Hey All,

A helpful tip for many who use Gmail. If you keep getting prompted with "Are you sure you want to use HTML (Basic) Gmail at login, or you are automatically taken to the HTML interface, instead of modern Gmail, you need to update your Gmail Bookmarks to the following link and delete the old one:

https://www.google.com/gmail/about/

This is part of Google's attempt to streamline Gmail accross all devices. If you are still getting the prompt, make sure that you are on a supported browser, (Firefox, Chrome, or Microsoft Edge) and clear your cache and browser history. Several Google users have been reporting this issue on Google Forums, and the help team seems to provide the harder solutions, when the issue may be as simple as updating your Gmail bookmarks.

Those are called favicons and are set by the websites themselves. I'll go check and see if there's an extension that will do what you want. What it would have to do is to poll all the websites in your bookmarks. Things may slow a little while it's doing this... If I can find one...

This one should do the trick, plus it will check if the bookmark is still valid as well. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...n/checkplaces/

Can anyone help?

I have resently downloaded and installed Opera 8.51 on my XP (haven't got around to my Linux yet ) and found a very irretating problem. This is unusually the same problem that I use to encounter when using IE.

Whenever I attempt to open a web page off of my hard drive (e.g. *.html) Windows comes up with a file not found error, and then Opera opens the page.

I am absolutly definate that this is not an error with the OS (supprisingly) as this sort of error is generated when opening HTML pages from other application - for example, when I open a HTML from WinRaR (double click >> temprary open, not unzipping, then open).

If you can reply me any advise it would really be appreciated, thank you.

A:Opera - opening html doc's error

If it happened in IE and it happens in other programs, it has to be an OS error or setting. If it started happening only after you installed Opera, it could be an issue with opera, but it's more likely a file assocation error on windows part and the Opera install changed a file association. Try this:

My Computer>Tools menu>folder options>filetypes

In the “registered file types” box, highlight HTML document. Below, it will tell you what program html docs open with (it will probably be IE). Click change. Look at the “Always use this program to open…” box. If it ISN’T checked, check it, close everything and see if your problem is corrected.. If it is already checked, then change the program notepad, select ok. On folder options box, select apply, then ok. Now repeat the procedure, only this time change the program from notepad to opera.exe.

What you just did, was change the file association for html files to notepad, then back to opera. If you’d rather have IE open all html’s, then select IE as the program instead of Opera. Makes no difference, but if your using Opera as your browser, I would think that you would want to use Opera for all htmls.

If this doesn’t fix it, post back and get the details on the registry fix

I've used Opera for over a year and think it's great. I just installed 8.51 on my daughters computer and don't like what I'm going through trying to make it look like mine. Haven'... Read more

I think this is what you are looking for:
This is from the Firefox website:

Disable Bookmark Icons

You can disable the display of bookmark icons and "favicons" by adding the following code to your user.js file:

// Disable Bookmark Icons
user_pref("browser.chrome.site_icons", false);
user_pref("browser.chrome.favicons", false);

When I click on a link, key in a URL or hit refresh on any open page, Opera opens the page with Word! I was downloading something and changed the extension on a file and ever since then it hasn't managed to open anything within Opera. It always tries to open a new Word document.

Has anyone seen this and managed to solve it?

A:Opera Opens Html Page With Word

Hi Pete
In Opera, click tools > preferences > advanced tab. Click "downloads" from the menu on the left. Uncheck "Hide File Types Opened With Opera" in the top right corner.
Select "application/internet shortcut" then click the "edit" button. Make sure "Open with Opera" is the only one selected. You might want to look at the msword association as well.
Anyway, that's were all of Opera's file associations are located and can be changed.
Also take a look in windows explorer at tools > options > file type tab and check the associations in there if the above doesn't happen to work for some reason.

Hello,

I have just started using the latest Opera Browser and Mail.

I like the Spam feature.

BUT my daily comic cartoons will not display. Apparently the HTML feature is either turned off or not supported. I cannot find the setting for HTML.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Penny

A:Opera and HTML feature (not displaying cartoon in email)

Hello,

Are there any Opera 7 users out there?

I have found the file extensions to set, under preferences, but the cartoons will still not load.

Penny.

I have many word documents with similar bookmarks. Some with more, some with less. I need to check the documents to see if certain bookmarks exist and if so, change the Bookmark name and text.

A:Solved: Word 2010 - Check if Bookmark is present and if so, change text and Bookmark

I don't know if this solution is the best way but I did figure out a way to do what I want.
If ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Exists("Old_Bkmrk") = True Then
Selection.GoTo What:=wdGoToBookmark, Name:="Old_Bkmrk"
Selection.Delete Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=1
Selection.InsertAfter "New_Text"
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Add Range:=Selection.Range, Name:="New_Bkmrk"
End If

I have Windows XP Pro, SP3 and use Firefox 3.

Is there a way to have the currently used Bookmark folder return as the default folder. So, say you click "Bookmark This Page", then a little dialog box shows up with the default folder as "Bookmarks Menu" (as it always does). What I'd like is for the previously used folder to be there the next time you bookmark a page. No more "Bookmarks Menu." Not regularly anyway.

Thanks,

royeo

Firefox only has the option in the bookmark window to save/export the entire bookmark.

What will you do if you want to save a single folder?

1) You can copy that bookmark folder. Just right click on it and copy it. Than paste it in another firefox profile bookmark. Or past it within an empty text file and save it.
2) However, if you want to save/export a bookmark folder with subfolders the previous method doesn't seem to work properly.
2a) If you use the previous method with a bookmark folder with one or more subfolders and past it in a file, it will only past the link urls and not as html links with names as shown in the bookmark folder.
2b) Solution is as follows:
- copy bookmark folder
- open software program 'Libre Office'
- create a new writer document
- right click on an empty space
- hover on 'Paste Special' and click on 'More Options...'
- within the 'Paste Special' window, select 'HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)' and click on 'OK' button.
- click on menu bar item 'File' and select 'Preview in webbrowser'.
- in the webbrowser, when everything seems ok, save the file as mht file.
- and you are done!

Recently i've installed Opera which hijacked my htm icons even though i didnt set it to default browser.
After i uninstalled it, htm icons have been took over by IE6.

Now i have absolutely no way to turn the icons back to FIREFOX.
I tried everything, set FF as default, rebuilt icons with TweakUI, deleted iconcache.db, deleted htmlfile\ShellEx\IconHandler, manually changed/restored/set file associations in folderview/filetypes countless times.. IE icons for htm files are simply indestructible.
I've encountered in xp, buttons that don't work so many times that it's just shameful for such corporation as #*%&* MS.

Does anyone know some trick to make things that are supposed to work to actually work?

Thanks

One more thing, it seems that all my html files in an obscure way turned to htm.
I'm feed up of windows altogether.

A:[SOLVED] Can't get FF icons back (impudence of Opera + Bugows XP OS)

Try Right-click on one of the .htm files and select "Open with" . . "Choose program" and navigate to FF . . put a check in the "Always use this program" and you should be back in bidness.

If you are using XP, you should upgrade to IE8 . . much more secure and stable . . whether you use IE or not.

Hi rossglen and welcome to TSF !

Can you remember if anything odd happened with the computer before the problems started ? When did it start ? Do you get other error messages ? If all started with advanced browser please give us a link to that application.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer. Once the scan is over give us the result. If you're still having troubles repeatedly press F8 while starting the computer and select last known good configuration in the menu that will appear.

Do you have the retail XP CD ? If so what service pack is on the CD ? If this is an OEM installation then what's the brand and model of the computer ?

You can't uninstall IE7 after installing SP3.
