Solved: MS Word will not save files anymore

Q: Solved: MS Word will not save files anymore

I have MS Office Home & Student 2007 loaded on my stand alone XP operating system.

Just recently, I have not been able to save a document that I have opened and edited in word as a 1. Word Document, 2. Word Template, 3. Word 97-2003 Document, 4. Other Formats.

When I click on any of these four options nothing happens.

However the only other option in the list: PDF or XPS does work. I am able to save the document as a pdf file.

I have tried repairing, uninstalling and then reloading the office suite. I have also done a system restore to a time that it worked correctly. All these methods have not fixed the problem.

I have not installed any new programs recently. The only thing I have done is deleted everything in my Temp folder. (could this be the cause of my problem?)

Any ideas to resolve my issue would be very much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We upgraded from Windows XP to a new HP Pavilion PC running Vista Home Premium. Installed Word perfect 10 with all the service packs/hotfixes I could find and copied the documents over. I can see and open the files but can not save or save as. The Save dialog box comes up but it is not pointing to the default file location I set up in WP. The file name always comes up *.* - which I can change but it will not let me set a file type (the line is blank and I can not type in it) and clicking the save button does nothing.

I can't open .doc files anymore or .docm either, I just get a window for Save As. I loaded a compatibility program recommended by the college for their program, and I suspect it may be the root of the problem, but when I removed this program, the problem still persists. I need to open these files. I have Word Perfect 10, and Office Access, but I still have been able to open these files previously.
Thanks.

A:Can't open .doc files anymore, get Save As

Hello Pixie7

Try this easier way first

Right click a problem file
Hover over Open with
If the program you need is not shown click "Choose Program"
Highlight the program in the list
At the bottom check "Always use this program...."
OK

If the program to open the file is not in the list, click the "Browse" button.
Find the ".exe" for the program and select it
Continue then as above.

I can still create/rename/delete folders on the drive, though, without that error message. This is only occurring on my C:\ drive; I can save files on all the drives OK.

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64-bit with NIS 2012.

Check start--settings--folder options--file types tab. See if you have .JPEG on the list. If not just click on New Type and add it. See if that helps.

Hi!
I am new to this forum, but recent difficulties have driven me here.
For some reason, whenever I go to save a document in Microsoft word, the "save as" box will pop up as usual, but where it would normally show my the contents of my documents folder there is absolutely nothing! Just blank space! And it will give me the "busy" cursor like its trying to load, but it never will and if I click anything it just goes to "not Responding" and I have to close it! This also happens if I try to open a file. Not just with word either, its all of my programs.

So basically, it is crashing whenever a program tries to access "my documents," which is usually the standard folder that opens whenever you go to "save as" etc.

This used to happen online too, but now that works for some reason but it still doesnt work offline. I thought installing "vista service pack" would help so I did that this morning but its still crashing.

If anyone knows any way I can fix this it would be much appreciated.

I haven't had Microsoft Office 2013 a week now and I already am having problems with opening documents that are in Microsoft Word's native format (docx). The problem lies within Windows and not word it seems. While the icon for docx files show the Word 2013 icon, it refuses to open with Microsoft Word 2013. Windows tells me that it does not know how to open docx files. It worked flawlessly since its install last Wednesday downloaded right from Office.com with the user name that was provided to me by KVCC, the college I attend. Office 2013 licenses are provided to all students as of 2016. Not even a week later, it is messing up. Word can still open .doc & .odt files but not docx files. There are a number of results on the internet where a problem with Office 2013 not being able to open docx files, but none are the problem I face, windows not knowing how to open it.

Says I can't open document because 'word has insufficient memory' -- I'm assuming this is related to the 62% resources free on bootup...should be 80 if i remember (this is win98) -- any ideas other than that as to why it won't save/open?

and if you agree its the resources problem - how to fix? This is my cousin's old machine...IBM Aptiva...i think it's a duron, only 64mb dedicated system memory...88 included onboard vram.

A:Word won't save or open files

I got system resources free up to 88% but it still won't open documents. If I open a document straight from my documents, it will open. But the 'open' command won't work in Word. I can't use the 'save' or 'save as' command.

I can open recent files though in the 'file' menu. Any ideas? Seems really weird.

Also, appears to be true in all Microsoft applications, not just Word.

Hello,

I am a teacher and would like to save my lesson plans in order so I can reference them easily. I have tried numerous naming conventions but haven't been able to achieve exactly what I want. It may not even be possible. Specifically, I create weekly lesson plans and want to save them in order by week, month, year. This would make it much easier to search for a specific lesson plan. The way it is, windows saves everything in alphabetical order so files are not sequential.

I am running Word 2003 on Windows XP. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it so much.

Thx

A:Save Word files in order by month

The file naming is going to have to start with data that you want first, i.e., week-month-year-SubjectMatter.

The week and month are going to have to be NUMBERS.

Friend is having 2 relatively minor problems with his 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.

The second:
He uses a flash drive to copy Word files from a Windows XP PC to his Windows 7 laptop. I created a one line bat file for him to copy all the .doc files from his document folder to a thumb drive.

We noticed that not all the document files were being copied. Of about 40 new files, only about 32 made it to the flash drive. When I tried to individually copy/paste files I get a msg (on the 'paste' end of it) that I
Cannot copy (whatever).doc. The directory or the file cannot be created.

So I brought up the original document, and did a Save As to the thumb drive. There I got the msg
Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write protected, or damaged.

The flash drive is about 1% full, does not seem to be damaged, and allowed me to copy 30-some of the Word files that have been created since 01//06/12, just not all of them.

Any of the documents already on the flash drive can easily be re-copied from the documents folder on the C: drive. It asks if I want to replace the file, I say yes and I get no error.

Any ideas? The Windows XP PC is runing Word 2003, while the Win 7 laptop is running Word 2007 if that makes any difference (I don't know why it should).

First problem in another thread.

Hi guys,

I have a question that has stumped me so far. Here is the scenario: I am dealing with a spreadsheet that has several tabs on it. In each tab, there are several word, powerpoint, and pdf documents that are embedded as objects. My task is to write a macro, that will for each document (keep in mind its an embedded object that needs to be opened), open it with the appropriate program, and save it using a pre-assigned name (the name of the column heading and the row it is in) to a predetermined folder path. This process needs to be duplicated about 200 times. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I know enough about vba to believe that it is. I've been working on it since yesterday, and I can't seem to tie the pieces together. Can anyone help on this?

All-

Here's the background:

Setting up forms for a firm to fill in. I protect the forms so that the user can only fill in the fields. They need to be able to edit and save as on a sharepoint small bus 03 server but NOT overwrite the original.

Once uploaded, sharepoint will not keep "read only"- tried that.

Sharepoint access rights go from "read" (too low, can't fill in forms) to contributer (too high no likey save new doc over the old one) with no in between to my knowledge.

I have mixed office 03 and 07 users.

Used this code below...works perfectly in 07 (user must save as and change name) but in 03 there is no chance at saving (completely disabled).

So, here's what I need advice/comments on... how can I change this code so that it works like it does in 07? (I'm not a coder)

And, do you know a better way because if the user doesn't enable macros then they can save over the original.

Thanks for your help-

This is sort of relates to my other thread, but is for word this time so I figured it deserves its own thread.

I need a macro in MS Word, that will, before saves, update footer fields. This is mainly to automatically update the timestamp without having to go into print preview.

the update all keyboard command does not apply to headers / footers it seems.
I found a macro that will update all including headers and footers.

Sub UpdateAll()
Dim oStory As Range
Dim oField As Field
On Error Resume Next
For Each oStory In ActiveDocument.StoryRanges
For Each oField In oStory.Fields
oField.Update
Next oField
Next oStory
On Error GoTo 0
End Sub

I just need to a macro to launch the above macro before every save.

Thanks.

I rename the the doc and save it on my desktop. then when i go back in the doc to finish comleting the form, it asks me to save as again. it will not let me resave the doc over the same form. This has become a problem because people do not always finish the form the first time they open it and have to keep doing a save as to save the doc. is there anyway that you can just save the doc to your desktop and edit the form when ever and just do a save to that doc.

A:Solved: can't save form in word

You need to make a protected form template rather than a protected form document. In other words, create a template file and protect that. Then, when users need to fill out the form, they use the template to create a new doc. That way they won't be trying to overwrite a protected file.

I know this is all bunk! I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2K but with no change.

I have to resort to using a batch file to make/save Word filenames.

Anyone else had this same problem?

Hi,

A friend of mine has MS Word 2003 and though it always used to work, a couple of days ago, it simply began to refuse to save anything. She is typing something for school, and when she tried to save the document, the "save" dialog box disappears for a second, then pops back up.......nothing else can work, of course, so long as that box is there........she tries repeatedly to save it, but it will disappear and reappear immediately each time. The only way she can do anything is to remove the name in the "name" area and then just click on the "x" at the top right of the dialog box. At that point, everything she's typed disappears and the MS Word page is blank again.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I'm not real familiar with the Office products. Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

I have been automating a Word document to enable our Engineers to populate a plan as quicklyand as painlessly as possible

At the end of the routein i call the "Save as" function to allow them to rename the file appropriately, I do this using the following code :

Application.Dialogs(wdDialogFileSaveAs).Show

but what I want to do is change the file type from ' A macro enabled Word ocument' to just an ordinary one, anybody know how I can force that in the dialog box ?

A:Solved: Word 2007 VBA - Save as Dialog

Code:
With Application.Dialogs(wdDialogFileSaveAs)
.Format = Word.WdSaveFormat.wdFormatDocumentDefault
.Show
End With

This should work in place of your current:

Code:
Application.Dialogs(wdDialogFileSaveAs).Show

I have had a very annoying problem with Word 2002 on a Dell Win Xp computer. I have 2 megs of ram and the procesor is 2.66 GHz. When I wish to save a document it takes about 15 seconds to go from one directory to another when I want to save the file or to go to a non default directory or a flash drive. It also takes this amount of time to retrieve a file. I have started using OpenOffice Writer since I can save and retrieve files immediately. For the final copy of the document I then go back to Word. This has been quite annoying for months. Has anybody had this experience? Even after installing a new harddrive sometime ago this problem surfaced. Thank you in advance.

Hello. My company recently switched from Office 2003 to Office 2007. I'm having a weird problem in Word '07 that I can't figure out. I'm running Windows XP Professional.

I'm working on a document that was created in Word 97-2003 format. Our client requires us to keep it in that format. There are some extraneous tab stops that I'm deleting throughout the document, partly because they're throwing off the spacing of the second lines of headings that have long titles. I delete those tabs, make sure the hanging indents of the heading styles are correct, and all appears to be well. I save the document.

Then the next time I open the document, my formatting changes have disappeared, the old tab stops are back in, and the headings are indented incorrectly.

Things I've tried that haven't worked:

I converted the document to 2007 just to see if there was a conversion problem at play. Exactly the same thing happens in the converted file.

I updated the heading styles to make sure the tab stops were correct. The formatting is wrong when I save and reopen the file.

Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate your help.

A:Solved: Word 2007 Doesn't Save Some Formatting Changes

Well, never mind! A coworker figured out that because the document was attached to a template and was set to automatically update document styles, the incorrect tabs and heading styles were getting pulled in from that template every time I opened the document.

When I receive an email with a word attachment in Microsoft Outlook it gives me a warning that there may be a virus and I need to save the attachment to my computer before I can open the file. Is there a setting I can change so that it will open in Word much like other attachments open in their respective programs. I am using Outlook 2007 and Windows XP. Thank you.

I'm trying to save a quick style set to use with other documents and to share with the rest of our engineers so we all use the same styles for our documents

I created and saved the custom styles I want to use.

I select "change styles", "style set", "save as quick style set" and give it a name.

Without leaving the document, I select the style set I just created and the format on some of the styles has changed.

So it apparently is not saving the content of the style set. I must be missing something.

I'm hoping to create and distribute a style set.

HELP

A:Solved: Can't save word 2007 quick styles set

These are the MS instructions:
1. Select the text that you want to create as a new style.

For example, perhaps you want the word business always to appear as bold and red in your document.
2. On the Mini toolbar that appears above your selection, click Bold and Red to format the text.
3. Right-click the selection, point to Styles, and then click Save Selection as a New Quick Style.
4. Give the style a name — for example, business — and then click OK.

The business style that you created appears in the Quick Styles gallery with the name you gave it, ready for you to use whenever you want text to be bold and red.

So it sounds like you have to create the Quick Style in a document, not just try to change styles and make a new one as you do that.

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more
