File permissions on Windows 7 is driving me nuts !!

Q: File permissions on Windows 7 is driving me nuts !!

I need to edit the hosts file found on the C:\Windows folder but I cannot do that unless I go to drive C: -> right click ->Properties->Security and assign to my username (which I don't understand why I need to do that if I'm logged as an administrator) full control of the drive.

Then it comes a Windows message saying that what I'm trying to do is not safe and not recommended.

Anyone knows how can I change the hosts file permissions without granting full access to my C: drive?

File is located on C:\Windows\system32\drives\etc.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently updated to Windows 8 because it seemed a good idea. But I have noticed that Microsoft has gone nuts about security with this latest iteration of their OS.

When I place programs on the C: Drive they all require administrator permissions to run even if you are an administrator and disable UAC not to mention nearly every program is protected. I moved the game Planetside 2 to my C: Drive to increase loading speed (C: Drive is an SSD) and now the game can't patch because Windows wont allow the launcher to replace the game's executable and I can't copy the game back to my HDD because the executable is always in use.

Is there any way to disable Windows 8's new security features? Or am I stuck with them now? I did disable my account and have switched to the built in administrator account, don't know if this will fix the problems, and I can live without metro.

A:C:\ Permissions Driving Me Nuts! - Windows 8

No, this is by design, nothing should be saved to the C: drive directly.

There are mainly 2 reasons for this, and has always been recommended to never do what you are trying to do.

1.) People save things to the root of c and can never find it again, and create a nightmare of bad filing system habits.
2.) Yes, stricter security, Why? Because people have complained for years about how bad Windows Security is, now they have it and they complain it is too strict.

If it is something that can be run from anywhere you save the application too, it is best to drop it in Documents and run it from there. Or an even better location is,....

That is the location that applications that want to save config files to is supposed to go.

Yes, security is stricter, but Win8 is far more secure than Win7 and reported to be one of the most secure OS's out.

I have an HP laptop with windows 7. I've only been using it for about a month and a half and I recently ran a system restore. For the last couple weeks every time I boot up I the first thing I see is a window asking me to choose a program that can open the filr "special" (which is the first word in my computer name). If I press cancel it keeps trying to open it about 4 more times. So i have to click cancel about 5 times in all.
The file resides in C:\Users\.. and it has no extension. Just special.FILE.
If I open it in notepad I see:

How the heck to I delete all the files that appear in the drop down in the "Open File" window in Media Player 9 (Windows 2000)? I'm not talking about the Recent File List...I am talking about the list that appears as a drop down beside "File Name". Let me tell you what I have tried:

1) Disabled recent file list and checked "clear history" in Media Player
2) Removed Media Player and reinstalled
3) Ran "Window Washer"
4) Ran SpyBot S&D to removed all recent files lists
5) Ran a VBS file that was supposed to erase it
6) Manually deleted key entries under RecentFiles in the registry

AND THE DANG LIST IS STILL THERE IN THE DROP DOWN!!! I am going crazy, not even because of what's on the list but because I can't seem to get rid of it!

Any tips?

My Windows 8 Lenovo laptop is basically brand new and is giving me all kinds of problems. First off, whenever I wake the PC up from sleep/hibernate, or unplug it from the power supply, the wifi adapter loses its internet connection and I have to reboot.

Second, and this just started today, I suddenly can't connect to Exchange via Outlook 2013 (or 2010 for that matter - I uninstalled 2013 and installed 2010 to see if that would fix it). I tried deleting and recreating my profile, deleting my .ost, reinstalling Outlook, copying the settings exactly from a PC that has a good Outlook config on it, but it will not connect. I know my password is good because I can connect to OWA and my phone is synced just fine.

Finally, I can't get this thing to boot in Safe Mode. I'm pressing F8 on startup and it's not working.

Please help - I'm an IT consultant and I'm baffled and infuriated with this POS and seriously considering trading it in for a Win7 laptop, or at the very least wiping this machine and installing a Win7 image on it.

A:Windows 8 laptop is driving me nuts.

Have you tried updating the Wireless adapter drivers from its manufacturer (not Lenovo)? If you have Intel Pro/Set wifi adapter, you can go to the Intel website and update it. While you're at it, also update the other drivers such as the Intel RST, BIOS, etc.

As for Outlook, I don't have an idea other than making sure you receive the latest updates for Office and Windows. If you have Office 2013 Click-to-run, it will be automatically updated while the traditional Office 2013 will require to opt in to updates for other Microsoft products in order to receive updates.

As for the safe mode, Windows 8 has a different approach to enter Safe mode than Windows 7 and earlier due to the new UEFI BIOS implementation. Here's the tutorial to enter Safe Mode: Safe Mode - Start Windows 8 in

.....Slowing down my pc and hogging around 40% of my notebook's CPU resources for prolonged periods......
So I followed instructions on a YouTube tutorial and disabled Win Defender Cached Maintenance, Clean-up, Scheduled Scan Tasks and Win Defender Verification via task scheduler within administrative tools.
Ok. Problem solved. But I'm just wondering if I have compromised my real-time security/protection by doing so? Also I am even more curious to know why "Windows Services Executable" was being so active in the first place and why it was using resources for such prolonged periods of time?
Windows Defender status appears to be fine, real time protection is on, so I assume I am still protected in real time. But as I say, I am still a little worried by having disabled the above features in order to improve the performance of my device, as well as to ensure it runs cooler.

Greetings All

I have a problem with setting up my network neighbourhood. The most ironic part is that i had it up before and it went down and never came back. I have been trying for 3 months without success.

-I have 2 machines: win98se and win95 osr1
-p3 650 and pentium 90 respectively.
-i have cable modem on the newer machine and
ultimately want to share it...but networking
-I am connecting using10/100BaseT cross wired
cable and am directly connecting the machines...
i.e., no hubs, switches, routers etc.
-I installed tcp/ip and ipx/spx on both machines
-TCP/IP is default on both machines
-I have set the frame type to Ethernet 802.3 on
both machines and have put the address at 10
(no particular reason for that number)
-They are in the same workgroup
-I can ping,,
and my ip address from both machines.
-I just bought a brand new 50 foot cable (so thats
ok...i think)
-Cable is plugged in, I am logged in and file and
print sharing is installed on both computers
-Net diag does not work properly for ipx/spx
YET i cant see the other computer from network neighbourhood....HELP PLEASE... I am really at the end of my rope...thanks

Ok I am getting at my wits end.. do anyone know a good, functioning encoder program for windows 7 64 bit versions?

Windows media 9 encoder is not functioning and I have googled the world thin to find solutions as to why.. but aparently I must be the only guy in windows 7 who has even attempted to use the program

Avidemux 2.5 does not work for me neither... I need an encoder that can handle FRAPS files and encode them without making error 0xC00D002E's...

I am getting quite frustrated so I apologise if that is too evident in my writing here.. google usually always solves for me but just not in this case.

I have core i3 processor, 3.1 GHz, 4gb DDR RAM. I have 80 GB SATA hard drive. it has four partitions of 19 gb approx each. Yesterday I formatted my C; drive using windows 7 ultimate installations setup. I had earlier installed windows xp sp3 proffesional as the only operating system on my machine. I was having problems with photoshop cs3.

Whenever I tried to save a file in photoshop, the save as window used to come for a fraction of a second then it used to disapper. I uninstalled photoshop, reinstalled it twice but no success.

So I installed windows 7 ultimate now [32 bit]. Now photoshop has gone even more evil. The welcome screen comes for a fraction of a second and disappears. Photoshop doesn't run. I checked the windows task manager too [ the proccesses tab that is.]

I thoroughly scanned my system for viruses, using ESET Smart Security 4 but still no virus found. I update my internet security software daily 2 or 3 times.

What seems to be wrong with my pc? I guess it's the hard drive space that's responsible for all this mess. I have

4gb free in my c: partition
1.5 gb free in my d: partition [after installing photoshop in this drive]

1.2 gb free in my e : partition

1.3 gb free in my f: partition

Do you still have these problems in safe mode?

I would uninstall PhotoShop. Then right click START and choose EXPLORE. Navigate to C:\Program Files and look for the Adobe Photoshop sub-folder. Delete all references to the program. Restart.

Then run C Cleaner and ONLY hand pick PhotoShop related entries and delete those if any. Restart.

Reinstall PhotoShop. If still having problems try running PhotoShop in safe mode. If it runs fine then this suggests that another program may be interfering such as AV software.

Okay, so lately Windows has been soft-hanging lately pretty frequently, and it's driving me insane. Here's an example of what I mean.

If, for example, I click on a link in an external program, like Pidgin (my IM client), Pidgin will lock up for 20 seconds and be unusable, and after those 20 seconds it will unlock and Firefox will open the link. Same thing if I open a link from IRC, Thunderbird, etc.
The same thing happens if I right click on the taskbar, hit properties, change anything there, and hit OK. After I hit OK, Explorer seems to hang for about 20 seconds.
If I go to the Start menu and click on My Computer, explorer hangs for about 20 seconds before opening My Computer.

This happens every time I do any of these actions (and more that I don't bother to type out).

I have tried running Registry Mechanic and CCleaner, but the problem persists. Can anyone help?

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3.

All of a sudden I am besieged with pop-ups in my Firefox browser. I saw an alert to download the latest Java update and it started normal like until a box appeared with the heading Premium, which is unlike any Java I have updated in the past, so I Xed out. Then i am confronted with many malware programs to get rid of my problems. I started one to do the scan but after awhile I realize after the scan they are going to ask me to register in order to clean it up, so I opted out of that one too. I was trying to read the files on a program disc i tried to install and wanted to read the userguide first and then thats when I get hit with these pop ups. I can't even read my files. I do not know what is legit anymore. Is there any help for me?

Hello, there is a big problem on my computer where I can't go to any email website, enable my Norton Antivirus (its not expired), or do anything like register on secure website or register on programs. So that also means I cant send files over AIM or anything. When I try to check my email it says it cant connect or it cant find the page. I used both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox to test that. its not a problem with my router because if i take out the router and use my modem I still cant connect or do anything plus all the other computers in my house can do everything I cant. If I try to enable Norton it doesnt do anything and plus the bigger problem is about the email and stuff so please dont talk about the Norton cause thats all they did in the other thread and I didnt really care about it. If the solutions requires run>cmd then it wont work because I have this error about Autoexec and it shuts down. So please help me because this has been bugging me for months.

I wonder if you could please help. I have a laptop with a stand alone hard drive for recording and uploading stuff. It is an Ausus Quiet Track 52x32x52x. I have recently tried to burn MP3 songs (which I downloaded onto my laptop) and play record them to the new blank CD-R. I select the songs to burn and the system runs through a "transeferring" routine. When I go and try to play the CD, there is nothing there! Bah! I use Easy CD Creator. I get some weird messsage about not being a good format. I have checked that it is running from Drive F (and not C or D as is often the case).
Anyway, some help/guidance would be REALLY welcome. I am going nuts with this and cannot think what to do.
Many thanks in advance.

PS: This site knocks the socks of Yahoo's Simply Computers Forum!

A:Cd-r Driving Me Nuts

You need to be specific about the "wierd message", because that's probably key to the problem. Basically, you should be able to tell it to burn an audio disk, and then it'll convert the MP3's to the proper format. I use Nero, and it's dirt simple, I'm assuming that Roxio would be similar.

I installed Star Wars Galaxies last night and it asked me to turn off Norton AntiVirus before installing. So I did. Bleh.
Somehow, apprently during the installation process (which directed me to dl a new version of DirectX) I picked up some horrid... thing... that keeps popping ads up from out of nowhere. (I should note that my friend installed exactly the same thing as I did and didn't get any pop-up problems afterwards.)

The most annoying part is that half the ads are for a "Free Trial" of something that blocks ads. How insulting.

Anyway, I've gotten rid of everything I've figured out how to get rid of (including SRNG and FLT) but am still getting the ads on occasion. I also deleted a file in my Program Files folder called "POP" that I couldn't find information about anywhere. So far, nothing seems to work.

I'm not sure how to get rid of the NetRatings folder or the MemoryMeter.

Since everyone else seems to have pasted a HijackThis log, I made one too. Help? Anyone? Please? Thank you.

Hello everyone,

I have 2 problems with my computer that I need your help with.

The first problem is this: EVERYTIME my computer boots and right after the FIRST Windows XP screen that indicates that the OS is loading (with the blue "progress bar"), Windows wants to error check my Hard Disk G:. On yeah, sorry....I have a primary and a secondary Hard Drive. The Primary is C and is ONE partition while the secondary is F and G drives D and E are CD-R/RW's. And, oh yeah, scandisk never finds any errors on G!!!

The second problem I am writing about is that for some reason my computer clock keeps reverting back to Saturday July 15th. MY anti-virus program (AVG) reports that the DATE on the internal virus database is INCORRECT every time the clock does this!!!

Thank you for any help that can be provided!!!

I have an Athlon XP 1800+ cpu, an ABIT KR7A (not RAID) mobo, good case temp (21-25 C), CPU temp is 37C. I am using a Volcano 6Cu cooler. The CPU temp on my old Volcano 6Cu is 37C/100F.

In my infinate wisdom (damn newbie that I am) and out of a desire to experiment and learn, I bought a Thermalright AX-7 cooler to replace the Volcano. It came highly recommended along with comments like "I wouldn't trust my 1800 to a lousy 6Cu." Also, it uses an 80mm fan instead of a 60mm, creating more airflow, etc. etc. (I'll get to the fan later).

Anyhow, when I originally installed the Volcano I used Arctic Silver, followed instructions to the letter, and snapped in the clips with great care. So I figured I was now an expert (hehe).

For the new install I even removed the mobo ('cause I was feeling clumsy putting in the bigger heatsink). I followed the usual procedure, snapped it in so it felt tight and put it all back together.

Now came the problems. The system worked fine for a few hours, with the case open, while in a horizontal position. Then it began cutting off as I leaned over the open case. This made me think that it was a fan problem because things suddenly got too warm when my body added heat. I moved back, it started up again, but only for a few minutes till it turned off again. As for the fan, I wanted a quiet system, as I don't overclock, so I bought the cooler pre-packaged with a Panaflo fan (39CFM) from The Heatsink Factory.

A:AX-7 driving me nuts

"If ain't broken , don't fix it " LOL that should be the motto.
Getting to your problem i have to say that it's a heatsink problem. It seems that once you position the case in a vertical stand , somehow the heatsink doesn't make a good contact and bye bye ..On a horizontal position it still "hangs on" to the cpu ...
And no Panaflo doesn't has anything to do with it. Run a 80 mm Panaflo on a 1600 + and the cpu temp is usualy in the 109 F under normal load
By definition Panaflo runs at a lower rpm ( usualy at 1900 rpm) so it will be a bit warmer then a Delta 7200 rpm "screamer"or 5400 one.
According to the AMD specs the cpu should be fine untill it hits the 54 C.
Personal i use an Alpha PAL 8045 on the same board

I think I was running FX 3.0.11 on xp when I saw that 3.5 was out and was supposedly faster. I upgraded FX 3.0 to 3.5 and it wouldn't work, so I uninstalled FX 3 with Revo, cleaned Mozilla and FX out of all the Docs/settings files, program files, & then cleaned the registry. Then I reinstalled FX 3.5 and have since upgraded it to 3.5.1. I can't say that I see any speed increase with FX 3.5 over 3.0, but that (imo) is an issue with the (turtle-slow) Comcast DNS servers. However, the 3.5 series just acts "funky" compared to the 3.0 series. FX 3.5 takes ages to close down and sometimes appears in the task mgr up to a minute (or more) after closing FX down. There's also a lot more port 53 ( I guess DNS) connects while using 3.5 as compared to FX 3.0.....series. I've monitored these with Wireshark and they look "ordinary", but there's still more DNS connects (showing up in my FW log), as over the years you get a feel for what web-sites are JS-tracking-heavy with subsequent DNS connects trying to fly out everywhere.(Using NS with FX). There's also a lot more of these with 3.5 "Server not found". Just got several of these when trying to connect to this website, something called Tech-Support-Guy.org was trying to load, and my FW showed no blocks in the log. Also my HIPS is asking me for a ton more Yes/No for a FX pulling up a DLL called mscms.dll. (I guess some websites can call up this DLL for FX to load, ... Read more

A:FX 3.5 is driving me & my FW nuts.

Dear jrx10,
Why did you do this quote"cleaned the registry" Unquote? The very need for an upgrade for FF were the Java Script attacks and an essential Add-on, the "NoScript" was/is recommended to avert such attacks and thus Mozilla came out with this major upgrade to 3.5.1. Once you install FF,under "Tools">Add-Ons>Get the recommended Add-ons and if NoScript is not there, just use the Google engine to install the "latest version of NOScript". Sometimes the Heuristics can be a nuisance and you may temporarily disable it or downgrade the settings, depending on which FW or Sec.Suite you are using!

Ever since my little problem in this thread, Live Update pops up above the clock on the toolbar. It asks me if I want to install new downloads or updates (can't remember which), so I always click yes. However, maybe 3 hours or so later, the same message pops back up. Is this common when having to do a system restore? (Next time it pops up, I will take a screen shot.)

Edit: Here is the picture. Also I believe I posted in the wrong section(?)

A:LiveUpdate driving me nuts.

Is the program expired??? That'll cause those constant popups. If it's not expired then try reinstalling Norton.

Does your clock has the correct date??? Sometimes things can happen which causes the clock to loose it's date. And...well Norton will constantly see updates.

By the way, what Norton program is it?

"Is this common when having to do a system restore?" - It shouldn't, but Norton, who knows.

Also, be aware that some Norton/Symantec products don't work nicely with Vista 64 - NAV 2008 comes to mind.

BTW, I'm not a Norton/Symantec basher, I've used Symantec products for years on Windows 98-Vista 32bit and had no problems until I went to Vista 64-bit, then I found that Norton Anti-Virus 2008 had issues under Vista 64, Which was confirmed by Norton/Symantec's tech support. Not sure if Symantec got the problem(s) sorted out in Norton Anti-Virus 2009 or any of it's other products so...
