X1 Carbon and Lenovo Power Manager 6. Random Sleep...

Q: X1 Carbon and Lenovo Power Manager 6. Random Sleep...

I have a two week old Lenovo X1 Carbon 20A7 and from the beginning after simply got Windows7 initial setup with nothing else on, I noted that if I left it to go in sleep or Hibernate, when the lid was closed, upon opening it again, the notebook screen was black although the adaptive keyboard was active and the machine was pingable from the network. No matter what I did I could not get the unit to come back to life so I always had to press the power button until it power cycled to get it back. I noted that I was not alone out there and some reported the issue on earlier X1's Support suggested to send it back and were not helping much. They decided it is either hardware or configuration issue, and in both cases it required a return. Because the issue was reported in the forums on earlier X1's I decided that it was probably software and I started by disabling all sleep modes only to find out it would still go to sleep. This is how I found out that if the sleep mode was disabled in Power Manager, it would automatically enable in Windows version of the power manager. Disable it in Windows and it would enable in Power manager... yeah - exactly; I had the same reaction.. Same thing with other power functions. So I de-installed Power Manager 6 and bingo, no more issues. But now I get non critical warnings in Lenovo tools that I have no power manager software installed. Plus I don't get the extra features that are useful in PM6. Did anyone experience the same? if so can you also try uninstalling Power Manager and see if the issue goes away, in which case we should pursue Lenovo to rectify it. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you please tell me exactly the steps to reproduce this?

Is it:
1. Leave system idle with lid open (is AC attached or not?)
2. System automatically enters sleep mode after XXX minutes
3. Close the lid
4. Open the lid
5. Screen stays black?

Or is it something else?

Two related issues: 1) With "Turn off the display" set to never and "Put the computer to sleep" is set for a number of minutes, the computer does not sleep after the time set and the display stays on. 2) With "Turn off the display" set to a number of minutes while sleep time is set to a longer time or never, the display turns off at the set time. However, it appears the computer immediately goes to sleep at the display off time, as the display turns off the sleep and power lights start blinking. How can I tell tell whether the computer is really sleeping at that moment or whether just the display is off?

Since upgrading to Windows 10 , my X1 is having awful power management issues. It randomly powers off when the lid is closed and often times won't wake up from sleep. It does this power on , blinking green light power button , power off mode:  see video of issue here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0jd7fjxmJg The only way to get it out of this mode is plug in the power cord and press and hold the power button to force off then turn on. Even though the battery is at 90% + it won't power on without being plugged in.  I have type: 20BSCTO1WW , Bios N14ET32W , Windows 10 ProAll latest ThinkVantage and Lenovo Power Management updates installed  Any thoughts? Does it need to go back to Lenovo ?

A:X1 Carbon Won't Power on After Sleep

I am having the exact same issue. After pressing power button the light flashes 8 times and there is then a pop from the speakers, this repeats 3 times. model:20BS0032USBIOS:N14ET32W This started for me after I ran Lenovo Updates on 10/8/15. I am able to get the laptop to eventually start by holding the power down for about 6 seconds and then powering the device back on. The start screen is a much different Lenovo splash page. I also had to roll back the wireless drivers as I could not connect to certain networks which previously had no issues.

This is my third X1 (all different generations) and I was very happy up till now. The problematic one has a Skylake processor and 512GB SSD and it seemed like a really nice config. The problem is that it doesn't want to shutdown nor wake up from sleep.First symptom: when shutting down, the pc seems to have shut down, but is still draining battery. If the keyboard FN-lock button is lighted, you can notice that this stays on. Also the fan will stay on if it was running before. The keyboard is even still responsive and you can turn on and off the different LEDs.Second symptom: when the pc goes to sleep, there is no waking it up. Also here the keyboard stays responsive for fn-lock etc.I've tried many things: reinstall windows 10 from scratch, reset the bios, upgrade the bios. Then Lenovo was actually very helpful to start: they swapped out the motherboard and when that didn't work, shipped the pc to a repair center. From here it went downhil: the repair was done in less than 5 hours according to the ticket (so I was impressed) but when I got the pc back I noticed why: they didn't repair it. They put on an image of windows 7 and since there the problem was not visible, called it fixed. Very frustrating. I put back windows 10 and guess what: the problem was exactly the same. When they shipped the pc, they had created a new ticket in the system, closing the original one. Now they even closed the second ticket although I already commented that the pc still doesn't work as it is supposed... Read more

Hi, I've recently got myself a ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 2). It works great except for the fact that when under heavy load it seems to randomly reboot. This is not a thermal issue, as I had first thought, as I have tried forcing the fan into "hairdryer mode" (echo level full-speed > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan) and I've watched this happen when under load while the thermal sensors are reporting nothing higher than 40 degrees. If the battery is fully charged, and the system is plugged in, this doesn't seem to happen. It only seems to happen if the system is either charging the battery or if the system has recently been plugged into the charger (i.e. it started up on battery power, or it started on AC, was unplugged and then plugged back in again). My thought now would be that this is either an issue with the main battery or the CMOS battery, or maybe with the charging circuitry? When the reboots occur, it is not a linux kernel issue as no kernel panic is generated or crash dump produced. It seems to be being triggered either by the BIOS or due to a power problem. Once this has happened, turning off the machine and turning it back on does not fix the issue. I have to use the battery disconnect hidden switch on the underside of the laptop to allow the system to completely discharge. Once plugged into AC for a few seconds, I can boot back up and everything will be fine again for hours and hours. I won't see the probelm again until I remove the AC. Please let... Read more

Hi everyone; this is my first post here. I purchased a T450 (Core i7/Nvidia Graphics/SSD) last September here in Korea and upgraded to Windows 10 shortly thereafter. For the last few months (not exactly sure when it started, but I think months after I upgraded) I've had 2 system problems that may be related. #1: In my Windows power settings the computer is set to NEVER sleep when the computer is plugged in, yet sometimes (and I'm never sure when) it goes to sleep after only one minute of inactivity.  I thought maybe it happened only when the battery was charging, but this is not the case.  Resetting seems to fix the problem. #2: When I attempt to open Lenovo Power Manager 8 the application crashes and can't open.  I need to use the task manager to end the program. Has anyone else had these problems?  I'd really appreciate some help on this. Regards,Chris

I was looking in my Device Manager the other day, when I noticed something odd: there were two devices related to Lenovo Power Management.   I looked at the properties of both of them and this is what I found:  The first one, "Lenovo PM Driver", is the one that shows up for download on the support page for the Lenovo T430 as it matches the version number. I have no idea what the second one "Lenovo Power Manager" is, at nothing with its version number appears on the website at all. Does anyone know what the second one is and if should it be there?

A:Lenovo PM Device vs. Lenovo Power Manager

I do not know if it SHOULD be there or not BUT I show the same 2 drivers with the same 2 version numbers on my X1Y3.  By the way Lenovo Power Manager was installed by windows 10 Update not through Lenovo Vantage for me.  Looking at windows drivers update on my laptop I traced it to the below link.

Hi all, first post. Well, my computer randomly powers off. This starts happening after my computer puts itself to sleep. This is the third time I've experienced this behavior on a fresh install (using 3 different hard drives so its not the disk). I usually disable sleep but I forgot (yet again). It seems from past experience, that from the first time my pc goes into sleep, the windows install is RUINED. If i can disable sleep right after installing windows (so sleep never runs), windows is fine and has no issues.

Ruined because it's going to power off at random. I dual boot with this PC, so I KNOW it's not a hardware issue. I have installed windows many many times and have only encountered this issue when the system goes into sleep. The second time I encountered this, I had accidentally put it into sleep when selecting reboot. It went to sleep and wouldnt wake up. When I rebooted, it was experiencing this exact issue. This time, it put itself into sleep, i woke it up and it went dead. I have rebooted 3 times and it comes back up fine each time but just randomly crashes. I thought it might be Silverlight but i just had it crash on me without Netflix open. Has anyone experienced this and is there a fix before I reinstall yet again?

So I was searching through Web and found this Support Website https://support.lenovo.com/in/en/solutions/ht103535  and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-10/Power-Manager-for-Windows-10/td-p/2113645/page/3 which States that Laptop Running Windows 10 (G50-70) Support Dual Mode Battery Firmware. So, Is this Information Right and we should not worry regarding Battery Charging just like we used to Threshold Charging in Windows 8.1 via LENOVO POWER MANAGER. I want clarification over this.

Didn't realize the laptop was unplugged and went completely dead sitting there for a month. Went to plug in to power up and nothing. Thought maybe cat chewed on charger cable and tested it and was only pulling 4v vs the 20v it's supposed to but tried new charger that Lenovo sent and still nothing. I've heard battery could be un-chargeable if left to completely die and sit for a while but still don't get why laptop won't boot up when plugged in.  Am I dealing with something else internal in addition to a dead battery?

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

Hi Got a Y5070 about a month ago, 11 months left on the warranty. When I received it, I replaced the HDD with an SSD, and upgraded RAM to 16Gb, and installed Windows 10. Ever since I've had it, when on battery I would get random power losses. Exactly as described here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y50-70-Sudden-Crash/m-p/2093711#M124398 The solution to that poster's question was to "reinstall OS because of NTFS error". Since there are multiple users complaining about the exact same circumstance, I can't believe that an OS reinstall will fix it. When it happens again, I'll get the dump file and event log entries and post them here.

Hi everyone - I have 2 issues with my y510p (it's a little less than a year old, so with the warranty coming up I figured I may want to get some second opinions). The first is that recently, say within the last month or so, it has developed the habit of rebooting for no discernible reason and with no warning.  It will just snap to a black screen instantly.I've done a full refrresh of my Windows 8. I've run all the validation tools I could think of (hard drive/mem/OS files/etc.) There's nothing particular evident in my event viewer except for this in my system errors:'The description for Event ID 0 from source GeneStor cannot be found. So as a heads up for anyone else that might be encountering either of these issues - I called support just now and I'm sending it off for repair.  Bit of a bummer since this is my work machine (thankfully I have my t500 from college still kicking around to use in the meantime). Tech support was really nice and quick. Didn't make me walk through the diagnostics/troubleshooting I'd already done which is refreshing. Hopefully this is just a fluke because apart from these issues I really like this machine (and as I said, my thinkpad is rock solid.)

Good morning, SF and BSOD teams:

I've been suffering from random BSODs on my Lenovo V570 laptop running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit on numerous occasions. This issue currently springs up at seemingly-random times, although there might be some correlation with me trying music-related activities (e.g. opening WinAmp, Google Play Music, etc.). The on-screen BSOD information consistently mentions power management driver, hence the reference in this post's title.

Some history with this laptop: I purchased it new in Sept 2011 - no issues
Shortly thereafter, I installed Ubuntu with a full disk wipe, re-format, and re-partition
After frustrations with Linux, I reinstalled Win 7 with a freshly-purchased retail full license (e.g. not the OEM recovery disk)
Note: it was after this event that the BSODs started to occur
I've since reinstalled Linux and Win 7 at least one or two times, each time with a full disk wipe/format/re-partition and seemingly successful installation.

One additional note: during each of the Win 7 installs, it seems as though virtually none of the expected drivers are available. I have to manually install ethernet, wi-fi, graphics, etc. before the thing starts behaving as expected. Again, this was all using the legitimate retail full Win 7 install disk and drivers directly from Lenovo's support site.

In any event, I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue.

Thanks!
-Danny

I have this 3000 N100 laptop for over a year now with no problems (except the lousy battery which died in 6 months and I'm running on A/C since then). Last week I started laptop and this shutdown problem started appearing. System would start normally and then would suddenly power itself in 2/3 minutes (most of the times, but sometimes in runs for 2-4 hours before shutting itself down)I checked the fan and processor. Nothing is heating up.I changed processor. Even then it'd go down.I have made the fan DIRECT (always ON) but the system still shuts down.I tried hmonitor but it only reads HDD temprature which is 36-40C - I guess very normal. Now I wonder where the problem may lie. Is it motherboard? What part of board might be getting heat? Or is it actually heat? Or do I need to get certain parts (capacitor, I/C or something) on Motherboard replaced? Any help? Comments? Suggestions?

A:Lenovo 3000 N100 random automatically power off (complete shut down)

I have been having this same issue the past couple days. I power my Lenovo laptop up.. it will boot into Windows XP.. then after 2-3 minutes - it will shut down. If I try to boot up again, the same process repeats. It is running on A/C now and still does this ... could it be a battery issue still? This would be the third battery that I purchase for the laptop since I bought it new. Thanks...

Hi,I have a brand new Carbon X1 5th Gen and just bought the Explorer VR headset. I run Windows 10 with everything updated. I cant get my VR headset to work, as it is complaining about an unsupported driver from Intel. When trying to update it to the one supporting Mixed Reality, its fails during the installation, and refers to Lenovo. Where can I find the supported Intel driver for my X1 Carbon so I can my Lenovo Explorer to work. Its really sad that two products from the same company doesnt seamlessly connect/update so things work.

Lenovo Gen 4(20FC) Carbon loses audio after Lenovo System Update We have several of the Gen 4 X1 Carbons here at work and they work fine until Lenovo system updates gets run. We have had 4 people run the system updates and now the system has no audio. If you click the audio icon in the try, windows begins diagnosing the system. If you try to install a different driver, it fails with code 1. No matter if you uninstall, reinstall, different versions of the driver....nothing seems to restore the audio. I finally did a system restore to before lenovo system update was run and the audio returned to working. It seems to be a software problem but I would really like to know if there is some way to get it working without having to restore every time someone runs lenovo system update.

I have an X1 carbon running Windows 8.1, and loving it.  But it has an annoying habit it is constantly going to sleep while I am using it, this is not after a few mins idleness. I have also put all sleep to never under the power options.  I don't thinks this is an overheating issue as it has done this just after turning on and was not that warm. Any help or direction would be great.  Cheers

I just bought a new X1 Carbon with Windows 10 and am having problems with it going to sleep mode and waking it up. I have the power button and closing the lid set to put Windows to sleep. Sometimes when I'm away for a while, the screen will go black like it should. But the power button is still solid green. Pressing and releasing the power button won't wake up the computer. The only way to wake it is to press and hold the power button, which reboots the computer. Also, is there a manual for this computer somewhere? All I got was a small pamphlet, and the only manual I can find online is from the 2nd gen model.

A:X1 Carbon Sleep Problems

Good day and welcome to the community.

I can't help with the sleep/suspend issue in Win10, but hopefully other members will join the discussion soon.

I can help with the manuals, though.
If you load the Carbon3 support pages:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-...
and select the Manuals tab, you should see the available selections.

Hope this helps get you started.

Hi all, I've had a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th gen for a few months now and I don't seem to be able to get it to sleep or hibernate.  In the advanced options power settings in Windows 10 I have changed to the following but in all cases it does nothing other than lock to laptop (e.g. if I'm watching video the sound will continue): Lid close action:On Battery - SleepPlugged in - Do Nothing Power button action:On Battery - SleepPlugged in - Hibernate Sleep button action:On Battery - SleepPlugged in - Hibernate Sleep after:On Battery - 10 minsPlugged in - 20 mins It results in the battery draining in about 24 hours unless I just fully shut down so this is seriously annoying

A:X1 Carbon 6th Gen won't go to sleep or hibernate properly

Just realised my mistake. I had sleep and hibernate the wrong way around. However, it's still not going in to hibernation when I press the sleep button. It only does it when I close the lid or press the power button.

Windows 10 RTM.X1 Carbon Gen 3 When going to sleep/suspend, many times the device will not actually enter sleep.  The lid LED remains on (not pulsing) and eventually it will bluescreen and create a memory.dmp file before shutting down entirely.  Booting up from this state is a clean boot, and any prior data is lost. I've updated everything recent from the Lenovo webiste as of 7/22 and the new Lenovo software updater for Windows 10, and no luck.

Try update your BIOS to 1.0.9, and in my case, the problem seems to go away. I am using X1 carbon 2015 3rd gen

Sometimes, maybe around half the time (I haven't counted), my laptop doesn't go to sleep when the lid is closed.  The fan keeps running and the Thinkpad logo red light stays on.  I know that the computer "registers" the lid closing, because the screen turns off and I get logged out.  This is very inconvenient because every time I close my laptop, I have to wait a minute to see if it properly went to sleep.  If this problem does occur, opening and closing the lid once more seems to put it to sleep.  I thought maybe it just took some time for the laptop to go to sleep, but my laptop was in my backpack today for a couple hours, logo light on and fan running and of course quite warm.  Did some searching but couldn't find a solution.  Is there a fix for this?  Thanks.

My sleep settings are set to 5 minutes when on battery, and 30 minutes on AC power... Battery is full and the system reports that it is on AC power. I've tried adjusting both setting and still, it goes to sleep after 2.5 minutes.  After a fresh restart, it usually behaves well for a while. But after a few resumes from sleep or hibernation, it starts to act up. If I unplug the system from AC and it's running on battery, it does go to sleep at the correct time.  Any ideas? EDIT: I should also mention that by AC I mean that I have this plugged into a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock.

I have an X1 Carbon 6th Gen running Windows 10. Even though I have unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in the Power Management tab for my wifi adapter, when I place my laptop in sleep mode the wifi connection is dropping.I was under the impression that the Modern Standby capability of the 6th Gen would keep my wifi up during sleep to allow background updates. Is this correct and if so why it the wifi connection dropping?

A:X1 Carbon 6th Gen - Wifi drops during sleep

Hello and welcome,

IIRC the setting you have changed applies to the machine while it's awake.  The Modern Standby options are elsewhere.

I don't have a Modern machine so I scrounged this off the web.  Do you have a similar option?

I have 20A7, since I received it a couple of months ago, it  had this problem. If I use sleep mode it never wakes up. Unless I disable usb3.0 mode in BIOS setup. In this case it goes to sleep and wakes up, but after waking it up the adaptive keys are gone and not functioning. It's speakers also doesn't work (mute) until the next reboot.

A:Thinkpad X1 Carbon sleep problem

Also have a 20A7 and the same thing occurring, the adaptaive keyboard bar is frozen and the laptop will not wake from suspend.  I have updated all drivers using the Lenovo Update utility so the laptop should be current.  Any update or resolution on this issue?

Hi, I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th gen (20KG) this week.I have the issue that it drains significant battery when in sleep mode (connected standby).I ran the microsoft sleepStudy (powercfg /SleepStudy) and identified that the battery drain in "modern standby" is still 1300mW. That equals 2.4% battery / hour, whereas the modern standby should get below 0.33% battery/hour.As a result the battery is essentially empty if you charge in the evening and put the notebook into sleep over night. The battery drain is dominated (~99%) by the entry "Fx Devices" - "Standard NVM Express Controller (\_SB.PCI0.RP05.PXSX)", which has 100% active time (i.e., is active during entire standby period). In device manager, I find the entry "Storage controllers" - "Standard NVM Express Controller", which looks fine and is a Microsoft driver in Version 10.0.17134.1.I cannot find a more appropriate driver on the Lenovo page. The Lenovo NVMe firmware upgrade tool (if related at all) tells me that no FW upgrade is available for my model LENSE20512GMSP34MEAT2TA. Regarding my System: I purchased the X1C without operating system, installed an existing windows 10 home. I installed all updates up to build 1803. I installed Lenovo System Update and installed all available items / drivers. Also I updated the BIOS from the Lenovo support page. My questions:- Do you also have this kind of strong battery drain in sleep mode?- Do you also have the Standard NVMe Microsoft driver, or am I...
