I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using Sage WinForecast V4.03 for several years and it worked fine on Windows 7 and until 4 days ago on Windows 10. Now when I try to load the program I get the message
'overflow while accessing registry or .cfg file'.

I have tried a clean reinstall of the software and also reinstalled form backups and no change. I also tried a previous version of the software and that worked (but would not read my later version files :-/) and also cleaning/defragging the registry.

I have tried searching the web but cannot find any reference to this issue.
Thank you for your help in resolving this.

Hi Ladies and Gents, my first time here.

I am trying to solve a problem where on 2 different machines refuse to open downloaded pdf's when this is selected at the open/save option after downloading. The 2 machines are both Win XP SP2. 1 is running Adobe Acrobat 7.0 (full) the other is running Reader 8.1.1.

On both, if an already saved file is clicked on it opens immediately. It is only on files being downloaded that the problem occurrs.

Any and all ideas gratefully received.

I realize there are many posts on this issue. When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

If this just recently started to happen, then you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started may be able to undo and fix this for you.

I'm using Outlook 2000 on an NT4 machine.

I'd like to make it so when I attach a file it automatically

Right now, it goes into my personal folder, but I'd like to make the other folder the default.

Could anyone tell me how this could be done.

I need a product that can open most kinds of files, I already have Adobe & Acrobat but I still get files I can't open to view- I tried the Search thing but it's a little confusing. I have windows xp and internet explorer, if it makes any difference. Thanks

A:Need application for opening most file types

Hi, We would need to know the file extension .xxx in order to help you. The name of the program the files are supposed to work with would also be enough. If these files are something you downloaded, they most often are .exe or self executing program installs. A double click will usually start the install. Some downloaded from the Internet programs come in .zip format, compressed, and you need a program like WinZip or PKUnzip to "open" them or extract the files to a folder. You may or may not then have to click the .exe file in that folder...
If they are pictures or email attachments, files you were sent- you need to be careful they are what they seem to be, as viruses are easy to get by clicking attachments to emails or by downloading the wrong things. If you list the file extension and/or tell us what the file is we can help a lot more. You should have "Show all files" enabled under View>Folder Options in Windows Explorer, and also the box unchecked for "Hide file extensions for known file types" to see the extensions and all files.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is a .pdf or personal document viewer and more, the free version is really all you basically need for dealing with things like online forms, tax forms specifically- and it comes with most pre-loaded systems.
There are built in programs (in Windows) to view text, pics, graphics, for Excel spreadsheets there are viewers you can download, same for Word docs, and so on.

I am having trouble linking my hotmail account with Outlook 2007.
It was working last week just fine but I deleted my profile and all the .pst and .ost files in the c:\outlook folder because I wanted to start outlook from scratch and reconfigure all my email accounts in outlook. I did back up all the .pst and .ost files on a thumb drive before I deleted from my HDD. I even uninstalled and deleted outlook connector.
I reinstalled outlook connector today and went through the steps of adding my hotmail account. After I click finish a new folder pops up in the left pane with my email account but when I click on it, it reads "the set of folders cannot be opened. the file hotmail.ost is not an offline folder file."
I have tried deleting my profile and the .ost files, and I bought advanced exchange recovery but that failed to fix it. I have spent the past 3 hours trying to figure this out with no luck. I moved the old hotmail.ost file that I saved back into the outlook folder but that didnt help either.
Any suggestions?

I'm moving from an XP machine to a Windows 7 machine and have transferred my project files (engraving files as well as .bmp). When I try to open a project folder in any of the programs I use it takes 2-3 minutes for it to load all the files.

There are just over 10,000 files in the folder, they are all small files (nothing larger than 100k), and on the XP machine it loads in an instant.

I have done everything I can find online (turned off indexing, changed the folder prefs, etc) and nothing works. When I open the folder within Windows it loads in an instant, however when I try to open it within a program is when it drags.

Does anybody have any ideas of what else I can try outside of threatening the computer with physical violence?

Also as you can tell by my screen name I'm a mac user that has to use PCs at work. Please keep that in mind when offering suggestions as I am relatively lost on this machine.

Thank you all!

A:Slow file loading when opening folder within program

I am having this exact same problem but with "drawing files" which are also around 10,000 items in a folder. While I'm in Excel, editing a hyperlink to a network folder, EVERY directory with more than 100 folders or files hangs. These folders load fine in windows, but the program takes forever to load the "open" window.

I hope someone has a fix for this. I am fully updated/patched via windows update.

Recently a change occured (after an update?).
I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off. Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time.
This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.

A:File explorer slow in opening folder with shortcuts

Additional info:
When the folder is closed for a longer period, then opening gives an instantaneous result.
After closing the folder, and opening again some time after closing, the shortcuts only show up after ca 30 sec.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

With every startup the past few days, my file manager has been opening when it's not supposed to. See the screenshot. I was able to do this in Win7 but can't figure out what to do in W10.
Problem is that I want File Explorer to start with the display at a particular folder. In my case that is D:\Tony\Pictures. And with the contents of that folder in the right-hand pane.
I should add that C: is the label for the SSD on this PC and data is stored in D:
At the moment, in the folders pane it shows five items: Quick Access, OneDrive, This PC, Network and Homegroup. If any of these are expanded then it will remain expanded but only down one level when re-opened. The default selected item of the five is always Quick Access and that is of little use to me.
Thanks in advance!

A:Solved: When opening e-mails in Outlook, why does the File tab now open?

Found the answer at http://blog.chron.com/helpline/2012/02/outlook-defaults-to-the-file-tab-when-i-open-an-email/:

Q. I must have done something to make the default tab “File” instead of “Message” when I click on an email in Microsoft Outlook 2010. Can you help me reset the default tab to “Message?”

A. With the introduction of Office 2007 and carrying on in to Office 2010, Microsoft introduced what is known as the “Ribbon” to Microsoft Office.

The Ribbon is designed to give you quicker access to the various features of the Office application you are using by grouping them together in an easy to understand and easy to access format.

For all of its usefulness, some users of the Microsoft Office suite may find The Ribbon intrusive and bothersome so Microsoft gave us the ability to minimize The Ribbon and display only the menu tabs. When you do this it hides all of text that is contained in The Ribbon and forces you to access all of the options from the various tab menu items.

The drawback to minimizing the Ribbon is that each time you open an email message in Outlook it will default to the File tab and you won’t have the options you expect like Reply or Forward until you click on the Message tab.

So if you want to avoid that one extra click you will need to open a message and then maximize the Ribbon. Once you do this it will cause Outlook to default back to the Message tab when you o... Read more

I do a lot of data manipulation between one spreadsheet/ text file and another. Some of the files I have are '.txt' in extension which I open by right clicking and selecting 'Open with Excel'.

Annoyingly, since I got a new pc with Windows 7 on it this results in a new instance of Excel opening instead of using the instance I already have open. So it tells me my personal macro workbook is already in use, I have to select read only to continue, and then the real problem of not being able to refer to the workbook from the workbook I already have open starts. I am usually trying to vlookup one data table to another, but since this problem started I cannot select the other instance of excel in the formula bar and have to manually copy all the data to the workbook of Excel I already have open.

Is there an option or workaround to avoid this? Why would I want to open more than one instance of Excel anyway when I can open multiple workbooks in one instance?

On my work computer (Windows 7 Enterprise), I've noticed a very strange and troublesome bug appears when navigating the Save-As directory. The usual Google searches are utterly fruitless and bloated with far-off tangents completely unrelated to this
issue... and a search of this forum and help library are equally helpless, so I thought I'd try a more direct approach.

I use custom shortcuts to zip through my folder hierarchies (my personal way of organizing stuff, since I use tons of folders). I simply ctrl+C (copy) the folder I want to link to, then right-click and pick "paste shortcut", to make my
little quick-link. That's what I mean by "shortcut" henceforth (nothing to do with keyboard shortcuts).
So, in any program (for example, AutoCAD 2013), pick "Save As..." and the standard browsing dialogue box opens up. Normal behavior is opening a folder to save the file in it, or going up a level. No problem.
The issue happens when clicking through one of those shortcuts I mentioned above. When you do this, Win7 inexplicably (and very annoyingly) changes the existing SaveAs filename (default, or one you entered) to the name of that shortcut instead, destroying
the original filename in the process.
An example: create a folder in your My Documents, then a shortcut for it (as explain above). Now try saving an image from Wikipedia or something, into that folder you just created. If you get th... Read more

A:Windows 7 Enterprise bug - file save-as renames a file if passing through a folder shortcut

I have followed the example you mentioned to save a picture to the folder shortcut, and the name won't change to the shortcut. Also the picture would be saved into the original folder.
Here is the steps I did:
1. Create a folder named New folder in My documents:
2. Select it and then press ctrl + C and right-click on destop choose paste shortcut(named New folder-Shortcut);
3. Right-click on a picture in one webpage then open the save picture as dialog box;
4. Navigate to the desktop folder shortcut and double-click into it, the file name field won't change;
5. My machine is Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.
Would you please tell some more details on how you saved the picture?
In addition, there might be some other applications triggered this action, we may take a look with process monitor:
The download link here:

And here is a blog talking about how to use it:

If possible, please redo the action, then upload the result into onedrive and paste the link here.

Hi all,

I have been hammered by several viruses. The result of the attack is that Windows Explorer now shows the file type for an exe file to be a file folder instead of an application. I assume there is something not right in the registry but I do not know where to start looking. Can anyone help? Thanks very much.

I'm not sure this is what you are talking about, but you can change the icon:
Tools -> Folder options -> File types
Mark the file and press "advanced".

Well, sort of strange thing happening with my pc.

I'll give an example: two files, names 1st_file.avi, 2nd_file.avi, nearly same size, at different locations. Now I deleted 1st_file.avi and 2-3 weeks after deletion, I open 2nd_file.avi (which wasn't deleted) and find that instead of the original 2nd_file.avi, the contents of 1st_file.avi are being played.

How can the contents of 1st_file.avi mapped onto the the contents of 2nd_file.avi? And where did my 2nd_file.avi go??

thanks for being patient and reading it through

Hi, I was messing around with some windows settings on XP and at one point i selected Set Default in the "Tools --> Folder Options" menu. From then on when i right clicked a file the option "open" would not appear but all files opened a search box.

I have been looking through "Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types --> Folder --> Advanced" and creating new "open" options using URL's from other file types and programs in the "system 32" folder but none of them work with out opening each folder in a seperate window. i have checked that the option to open folders in the same window is selected.

I have also looked on other computers and they will not let me look at the link.

Can anyone help?

If i havent explained properly or you dont understand do not hesitate to contact me at: [email protected]

Hi, back again after helpful solution yesterday restoring access to my cd-rom player.

I inserted the disc I wanted and downloaded the info to my computer. When I tried to open the file I got a message that it could not be done because it is a type of MAC file. I read a bit on the internet about how to make the conversion, but the advice seemed to be about burning a new disc in Windows. I don't have a burner so it is not relevant. All I want to do is use the information in the file in order to be able to use a new printer.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

A:Windows 7 64bit unable to file missing file in Hijackthis log file

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

I see no sign of infection in those logs. If you think the machine is infected...
