2 Problems with new T480

Q: 2 Problems with new T480

Hi,This is the first Lenovo Laptop bought by me.I am using the laptop for a few days and the impressions are overalling good, but, I have 2 problems:The first is with the 2 battery system.I tought that the first battery to discharge was the removal battery, but that is not the case. Do I have to change something in BIOS?The second problem is with the UltraDockStation. When I have 1 USB disk connected to the DockStation, I am unable to backup laptop to USB disk, or to transfer big files (10GBs for example) (from the laptop to USB 3.0 disk). It starts normally and then it freezes the transfer. If I connect the USB disk directly to the laptop this problem doesn't occur. All components area updated, with Lenovo Vantage.Anyone has this problems and are there any ways to solve it?Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: 2 Problems with new T480

I can only respond to the 1st question. See post below. you cant change in Bios discharge priority. Discharge priority depends on the wear level of the 2 batteries.

Hello fellow Lenovo lovers I just got the brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T480 model  20L50000MD model with i5 and the 20L7001LMD with i7  Problem: I have the opportunity to upgrade them with the Samsung SSD 960 EVO m.2, but I can't find the speed on the SSD m.2 which comes with the laptops named: 512 GB SSD - (M.2) PCIe - TCG Opal Encryption 2, NVM Express (NVMe) Even here in the datasheet I can't find a single clue on how fast the drive is or what brand it is. And when I tried to go to Lenovo's repair center to see what parts could be ordered to this laptop it just said that the laptop was not available for support or spare parts..  http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T480/ThinkPad_T480_Platform_Specificatio... <--(Data sheet) Can someone help me find the speed on these Lenovo SSD's ?Thanks <3

We just purchased 20 of the T480 laptops, with 40AF ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock's.  We are having several issues with these devices:The internal battery drains almost all the way down before the replaceable battery drainsThe monitors connected to the dock don't work in BIOS and pre-windows logon screen.  We are unable to enter the bitlocker unlock key without using the laptop itselfThe USB ports on the dock cut in and out.  You'll be moving your mouse and all of the sudden it stops moving, then jumps accross the screen.  You'll be typing, and all of the sudden you'll get 10 of 1 character.  This happens about every other minute or so. Sometimes the dock and laptop don't proprly recognize each other.  The orange light on the dock never turns white, the laptop never chargess.  The only way to fix this is the power cycle the dock. I've tried 2 different docks with my laptop, and they both have the same issues. Running BIOS 1.12, and I see the new BIOS version's don't fix any of these issues.

Hello,I've got brand new T480 with ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock and I'm experiencing USB issues when docked.I have read related topics and they seems to be dead without any working solution. Description of problem:When I docked my T480 for the first time, all USBs (only mouse and keyboard) were working. I had left office for night and when I have returned and docked my laptop again, USBs seems to stop working. I?ve tried to reconnecting dock, powering dock off and unplugging devices or changing USB slots without any success.Only restart of computer seemed to get USBs working back again. BUT, there have been about 5 minute period when USB devices were randomly connecting and disconnecting without any warning.Problem appeared again when I left my desk for 30 minutes without turning off or putting laptop into sleep. USBs were dead again. Only restart helped and it was followed with 5 minute period of randomly disconnecting USB devices again. All other connected devices ? 1x FHD monitor via DP, 1x FHD monitor via HDMI and headphones via front 3.5mm jack are working without any problems and laptop is charging properly as well. My laptop is fully updated via Lenovo Vantage and dock in currently at only available FW. Is there any solution to this? It?s get pretty annoying for laptop that is meant to be docked! And it seems that problem occurs accros multiple ThinkPad Thunderbolt docks.. Thank you

Hi everyone, I have a T480 on Windows 10 , 10.0, build: 17134 (x64), with an Intel I5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz with 8GB RAM, bought three months ago.I've been experiencing intermitent clicking and buzzing for a few weeks when playing audio (both online and directly on the laptop). No change after updating the BIOS and putting the laptop in high performance. I've run LantencyMon, which gave me the following error message: "Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. Also one or more ISR routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates. " Unfortunately, I'm not so familiar with this, so I'm not sure how to fix the problem? There shouldn't be any CPU throttling on high performance so that's probably not the problem. The main source of hard pagefaults in the diagnostic I ran is msmpeng.exe and system.I've seen a few similar posts for other models, would any of you know how to fix this? Thanks a lot!

Hi, I"m using a T480 with Windows Hello / face recognition, but it works very unreliable. And I am not referring to the quality of recognition, but the operation itself. After a reboot, I can see the IR LEDs blinking, so I know the camera is in operation and it works perfectly.after a while (Don't know what exactly is needed to reproduce, perhaps some sleep/hibernate cycles), the IR LEDs and the camera are simply not activated on the sign in screen. Fingerprint Auth works, however, there were some cases when fingerprint also refused to work in such cases. Inside windows, I have seen several times the Window Camera Frame server taking too much CPU and  I thought it might be related, so I disabled this service. It did not change anything - Face recognition still worked for some time, and then it stopped again. I suspect this could be some driver issue. Anyone else facing such problems? Any ideas, hints? Thanks

I had clean install on 02 January on brand new T480, and after 22 January 1809 update I have events in event log with error messages that some hardware components could not be reached, dns problems etc. Also some DCOM error messages are present. Computer is very slow sometimes, web browsing, Outlook etc.Networking is slower durign that period, I measure around 70% less bandwidth, compared with W530 on the same switch, measured one after another, while Outlook is freezing and pictures in MS Word are half white. I spent all day tring to resolve, unistalled and reinstalled audio and ethernet driver, antivirus software (Trend Micro), OneDrive etc.Lenovo Vantage gives good results in Health tests and all drivers are up to date according to it. Does anbody else has the same experience and what to do? PS I did full malwarebytes and av scan, monitored open ports, network connections, processes etc and I bealive it is clean from malware, it is almost unsed too.

I've noticed my fan always stays on regading the temps when my machine is plugged on the 65W charger, temperatures remain between 38 and 57 on light use, but even when idling the fan kicks on as soon as I plug in my charger and turns off a couple seconds after I plug it off. I have tried to fix it by installing the patch mentioned on https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/es/en/solutions/ht506625 and changin the BIOS profile for the plugged status (it's on the same profile now both for AC plugged and unplugged) but the problem perists. Anyone knows how to fix this issue without the need to install 3rd party software or can point me to the windows 10 settings that regukate this behaviour? Thanks in advance.

Hey! I was wondering any kind of SSDs would work with the T480? Right now I bought it with 500 GB HDD and Intel Optane (16Gb), but in the future, I might consider upgrading to 512 nVME SSD for system. Also, what do you guys know about the battery life upon general internet usage? I bought a battery with 72Wh so in total it would be 96 Wh. Plus, I also own a Varta Power Bank (13mAh) 48,1 Wh. Do you guys believe it could charge the battery by any chance? https://www.varta-consumer.com/en/products/portable-power/overview/details/lcd-power-bank-13000 Please let me know you guys think! Bellow you can see the exact specs. (In general I will not use the dedicated GPU, just the integrated)

We have an associate who uses a T480, he has dual screens and we have an HDMI and USB C to Hdmi for his displays. Most of the time they are running fine, sometimes though the USB C one goes black, and he has to unplug and replug it back in. Then it wakes up, we have replaced his USB C adapter and cable to the monitor and it hasn't helped. Is there possibly some settings that turns off the USB C port after a time period? It's hard to pin point because it happens throughout the day. Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advanced.

T480 doesn?t charge with the USB-C AC charger plugged in. when the AC charger is plugged in, the orange LED illuminates and blinks three times, the plugged in logo pops up momentarily then nothing. The thinkpad was purchased in October this year with everything working flawlessly... I then left the standard 45W charger at an airport. I ordered a replacement and received it 6 weeks ago and has been working fine until today... Do I have a dead AC charger? anyone have similar issues?

Hi everyone, today I upgraded the RAM and the SSD of my T480. I am absolutely not doing this for the first time and I was really careful. I removed the external battery and deactivated the internal battery before starting with the procedure. I used only ESD-safe tools and an ESD-wristband to make sure that the device doens't get damaged by static discharge. After installing the components, my device would no longer turn on. When I connect the charger, the power led flashes 3x but when I press the powervbutton nothing happens. No fan spin, no lights turning on, absolutly nothing.I then tried removing the RAM and the SSD and turning on the machine. But that didn't work as well. After that I tried removing all the power sources (internal and external battery, CMOS-battery), pressing the power button for 60 seconds and leaving the device for 1 hour before reconnecting everything. But it still can't turn it on. Do you guys have any idea what I could try to make my device work again? Thanks in advance. --resonance

Hello all, Just received my sixth thinkpad in the last 23 years. It arrived yesterday.  It is a: T480, I7-8550U, 16GB(8+8), 512 M.2 SSD, iGPU, Win10 Pro The fan is really annoying.  It goes on and off constantly.  It seems to ramp up to full speed.  I have been reading about fan noise with this model all over the internet.  Is there a way for it to run constantly at a lower speed than the constant on and off?  My previous model was a T430 never had issues with fan noise (it was very quiet too when it ran). Currently running a test:  Not using the laptop at all.  Opened 1 tab on Chrome and have it sitting on cnn.com.  Also, opened one tab on Edge also on cnn.com.  Task manager open.  Chrome uses less CPU but more memory than Edge.  CPU is running between 15% and 20%.  Fan turns on every minute or so for about 20 to 30 seconds then goes off. It is loud and annoying going on and off.  Why can't it just be a constant lower speed?  On and off is ridiculous.  If this keeps up this machine is going back. Thanks for any replies and suggestions.

I ordered a T480 with the Geforce MX150 option. Was surprised to see my delivered unit with Intel UHD 620 and simultaneously active with the Geforce GPU. The Intel GPU however is the default display adapter. Intel UHD 620 is active display adapterI've never quite seen this before. Desktop mainboard BIOS would typically disable the onboard GPU if slotted with an actual video card (leaving the OS blind to its presence), and all my previous laptops that I configured with a discrete GPU would have just that alone. Am I supposed to disable the UHD 620 in Device Manager in order to force the Geforce to take over? I don't see anything in the BIOS that can influence this (in fact it seems to suggest the UHD is in charge with its shared memory setting).

Hi,Recently bought a T480 with the 150MX Nvidia card. The laptop works great during normal operation during work etc but when I get home and want to play some games, nothing is working as it should. What happens is this:When I start the game everything is running good but after a few minutes I can see my CPU start to lower it's power limit (PL1) slowly towards 5W. It will stop at 5W never gaining any wattage back until i restart computer. The PL1 is at 15W when computer is newly booted. I have tried to uninstall the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, this results in that the processor is fixed at 15W but after a while the iGPU will go crazy and goes to 100% leaving the CPU at 2W = 0.2Ghz. And I have to restart. So this is not a valid solution. All my power settings are on maximum performance ofc.I have tried almost everything I can think of and been browsing all kind of reddit threads without any long term solution.

So while I work on a lot of lenovo systems (average 90+ a month, several models), I am starting to notice an issue with the T480 systems. I have been seeing an issue where people are not closing apps and just putting their systems to sleep, while this normally stops everything, I am noticing that the systems are still running and becoming overheated. It has gotten to a point that I decided to try this out for myself, and sure enough I came back, screen was black, system on, and I cannot turn it off! I pulled the basecover off and had to disconnect the internal battery (ONLY PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS SHOULD BE DOING THIS) in order to stop the system. After letting it cool for 3 - 5 minutes, the system starts back up with no issues, now I have seen this as well with several other T480 systems! Is anyone else starting to notice this? Is this a T480 issue or a software issue? Thanks

Hi, the display of my T480 that I bough in November, 2018, has scratches from the keyboard and the pointer that appeared after closing the lid. I always carry my laptop in a sleeve and a "slip" between the keyboard and the display (otherwise the scratches could have been even bigger!). I thought that I'm buying a business-product for 1500? that will accompany me for a couple of years during my work at the University. Unfortunately, the scratches are really annoying, and the notebooksbilliger.de told me that it is a purely "optical" flaw, not subject to warranty, and if I really want to, I should contact you in the first place. Which I am doing, because I find it really disappointing of Lenovo, as I bought your laptop due to your excellent reputation. The scratches are definately there because of the construction of the laptop. What do you say about that? Karolina Video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12helGfqJ0AdEgj2yxzTbUlJGdKrxztLX/view?usp=sharinghttps://drive.google.com/file/d/190jL1109FsM4NOmVPGx8rVBso7dTqsfc/view?usp=sharingFoto: https://drive.google.com/file/d/190jL1109FsM4NOmVPGx8rVBso7dTqsfc/view?usp=sharing

Hi, I bought a t480 and would like to upgrade the main bay hdd to ssd. My questions are 1. What ssds are best right now. Sata or m.2 pcie? ight now i am rooting samsung 860 evo as my first choice. Should i go for Sata 3 or m.2 pcie? i am aware that pcie lane us only x2 so i will not be able to utilize the speed of the pcie. Is it the same with the sata 3? 2. Do i need special casing or connectors if i will install samsung 860 evo? 3. Do we have other better options?I also read crucial mx-500 ssd if that is more practical. Im planning to use my t480 for coding. It has i58thgen 32 GB Ram and dedicated mx150 graphics and also instaled a 240 GB ssd form 2242 in wwan. Thanks for your help. Ps. Where to buy the ssds in great prices and reliability?

Hello, I am looking at a Lenovo ThinkPad E480 and I have some questions about it. (1) Are there two Memory Slots on the Motherboard ? Can I have an 8GB + 8GB (total 16GB) configuration ? (2) Does the M.2 interface support SATA3 and PCIe NVMe both ? (3) Does the 2.5" interface support SATA3 ?  (4) If I order from Lenovo Canada Do I have to pay customs/duty fee ? Many Thanks

A:Some Questions about ThinkPad T480

Hello and welcome,

You've posted in a "T" forum. Your subject mentions a T480 but your post body says E480.

Please clarify which model you're interested in.

I would like to know if I can use a USB 3.0 dock with T480 or it must be an USB-C dock? I think to use this USB 3.0 https://www.tutti.ch/de/vi/zuerich/computer-zubehoer/komponenten-zubehoer/thinkpad-usb-3-0-dock/2899... and then maybe exist an USB 3.0 to USB-c adapter? Thanks

Hello mrripe, yes you can use the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock (pro or ultra) with the T480, not necessarily only the USB -C Dock

Could someone please send me a link to purchase additional power blocks/cords for T480? I have many Lenovo cords but the tip that goes into the computer has changed (again) since my last purchase. Adaptor suggestions also welcome.  Thank you.

Hi, I had a set up with a T480, an Ultra Dock, and three Dell U2518D.These monitors have up to 2560x1440 pixels. One is connected via DP, the other two do DP passthrough. No, it worked for the last 8 month or so.But recently, either after a Windows Update, or a Lenovo system Update, the third monitor can only do 2000x1080. My try was getting rid of Daisy Chaining, so I switched the Monitor to HDMI connection, no solution. Then I tried older graphics drivers, no solution. So either a Windows Update (also drivers through there), or a Lenovo System Update (Driver or FW Update) broke the ability to to 3x 2560x1440. This happened on 4 Laptops, two T480 i5 (intel only), one T480 i7 (intel only) and one T480 i7 (nVidia Hybrid). Windows Version is 1803 for the ones withoug nVidia and 1809 for the one with nVidia. As I tried dockings with the latest FW update, and without, the problem seems not on the docking side. Any ideas? regards

I've been told by my IT team that the T480 laptops are only compatible with Windows 10 becuase of the Kaby Lake Processor.  Is this true?  I looked online and saw there are T480 Windows 7 drivers still available on this site.  Thanks
