Sporadic BSOD Hyper-V Server 2012, HYPERVISOR_ERROR 20001

Q: Sporadic BSOD Hyper-V Server 2012, HYPERVISOR_ERROR 20001

This is my last ditch attempt to try to resolve this before replacing a HP DL385P Gen8 server running about 27 VM's.

The BSOD has occurred 5 times since 8/2/2016 with no apparent rhyme or reason.

I tried running the DM Log Collector Tool, but the zip file it created on the "desktop" was empty. I assume it's because it's a Hyper-V Server with no GUI.

The server has all of the most recent firmware (including BIOS), drivers and Windows Updates.

Attached are the two most recent mini-dumps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello Friends, I am building a programming project and would require a Virtualization software to try it. So, I thought to get the Standalone Hyper-V Server 2012. So, does anyone know how to get them? I have heard that they are a standalone Operating System then installs on the Hard Drive and run like an OS.

Please also provide a link to Download it and the installation guide.

Thank You................

Heya so I installed hyper-V on my other computer because I wanted to get a program to work on it (googled how to get my Reason to work on windows 8). Since I couldn't find the suggested setting to just turn some hyper-V settings on I thought I dont have it on my computer. After installing Hyper-V though my computer went server mode and I have no experience of that. Now I want to remove it from my comp but dont know how and googling doesn't help :S I dont mind formatting the computer, nothing too important there and after the uninstallation of Hyper-V I will install xp on it too. Didn't like W8 tbh.

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys,

This is the first time using the forum so I apologize if this has been put in the incorrect place. My brother recently installed Hyper V Server 2012 r2, which boots up everytime I start my laptop. I just want help in how to completely remove the software and help get back my Windows 8. Neither me or him know how to get back to windows 8.

Thanks in advance guys.

A:Help with Windows Hyper V Server 2012 R2

Well, you must have a bootable Windows 8 DVD or USB. Go to the BIOS settings, select to have the DVD or USB device as first device. Then it should say "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." if you have a DVD or it will show the OEM or Windows logo directly (USB). When you are prompted for the installation type, choose Custom. Make sure you have backed up your files. Delete every partition of Disk 0 and then choose the Unallocated Space to install.

I hope this helps you.

Upon rebooting my computer, it gets stuck at cmd, and if I try to restore the system by pressing f8 or f11, it eventually takes me back to the same screen after rebooting again. A:Sporadic BSOD under Windows Server 2003

Hi -

The bugcheck was 0x93 = kernel code attempted to close an invalid handle

Microsoft server driver was named probable cause, but it is likely a default -

srv.sys Mon Aug 16 13:09:42 2010 (4C6970D6)

Can you run Driver Verifier? It can help ID a 'rogue' driver if BSODs are software related.

Keep in mind that Driver Verifier's job is to force a BSOD upon flagging a driver, so the server will come down. Also, you may experience resource contention.

Instructions are for Windows 8, 7, Vista, but basically the same for Server 2003 & XP. Bring up a CMD screen, type verifier; follow the instructions -

Hi. I'm using a 2012 r2 server hyper-v. Home network. Have internet access. Physical NIC.

I created a 2008 server vm. Not a DC. Just a plain 2008 r2 server in a workgroup.
I created an external switch, allowing management OS to share network adapter.
In the virtual machine settings, Network adapter is set to use this external switch.

I want the 2008 server vm to be able to connect to the internet to apply windows updates.
It is unclear to me what I need to do make this happen.

I believe the issue is in the ip configuration but I need some help.

A:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I signed up specifically because I was told this place was great for helping people with really intractable problems.

I have a user, Markus, he's an engineer, and he likes folder structures. He's got a nice one set up on my server with very well-defined permissions for several groups for his engineering projects.

His computer: Core 2 Duo machine running Windows Vista, non-SP1.
Server is a Dell PowerEdge running Server 2003 SP2 with all the latest updates.
We are in a Windows 2003 domain which is running pretty smoothly.

Starting a few weeks ago, he has been having problems very sporadically where a file that has has been working with and saving frequently, in a directory he has full permissions to access, refuses to save over its previous incarnation.

To break that down: he'll be in Word, say, and he saves his file every fifteen minutes, and at some point it will refuse to save over the existing copy and it will instead pop up the Save As box. Happens in Word, Illustrator, and Pro-E, so it's not program specific.

It ONLY happens for this user, none of the others. This means to me that it is either user-specific or OS-specific, as he's the only one running Vista, too.

Some of the programs will spit out an oddly-named file (like "a3bdfe8c") before giving the error. I assume that this is because the program is attempting to save the file and then write over the old one, in an attempt to make it an ato... Read more

It's a private game server so I need people outside of my home network to be able to connect to the VM box through my static IP my ISP gave me. The problem seems to be that the external connection is still giving the VM a DHCP assigned IP rather than the
static IP from my modem, which others would connect to.

Thanks in advance for any insight! Also, if you guys have any tips on how to analyze these dumps it would be awesome. I'd love to be able to look at these files, I had a setup before with WinDBG but I was never able to garner the same information as these forums.

I am new to Gen2 Hyper-V and so far I simply can't use it, because I am unable to install any (supported) guest OS from an ISO ...

So far I tried that on:
1. my HP Z230/i4770 workstation (Secure Boot disabled) host running Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (with Hyper-V feature enabled), can't boot any VM with supported OS ISO.

2. my home desktop/i3770K (secure Boot enabled) host running Windows 8.1 Pro x64, same result, error during VM boot from ISO, quoted below.

Synthetic SCSI controller (instance blah blah) Failed to Power on with Error 'The version does not support this version of file format'

Gen1 guests of course work perfectly fine with those ISOs, because emulated DVD IDE picks up the official Enterprise Evaluation ISO of either Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise, perfectly fine and all works OK in Legacy boot mode.
When I create a new guest and select Gen2, then no matter if I check or uncheck the Secure Boot in virtual Boot Order options for the guest (while setting the SCSI DVD at top of course), it simply doesn't work, always same error. I tried first connecting
to VM to see if it prompts for key press, but it doesn't, the error is instant on Power on when (supported) ISO image is selected to be booted.

I verified that both of official Enterprise Evaluation ISO's of either WS2012r2 and W8.1x64 are bootable in both the UEFI mode (Secure Boot enabled) and Legacy BIOS mode using a physical computer.

What am I missing here???

A:hyper-v cannot boot Gen2 guest from Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1 x64 ISO - file format not supported, Gen1 works fine

I have a Win 2003 server, standard edition, 32 bit. This server has 2 x dual core xeons and 12GB of ram. Currently I run several VMs off this machine via VM Server. I have been thinking about migrating to Windows 2008 64 bit and using HyperV instead of VM Server.

First going from 32 bit to 64 bit on the host OS, would that give me any performance boost? Second, how do the two virtual products compare? I have been hearing great things about HyperV.

I am not concerned about cost since I am in Education and get very good pricing on MS products.

Should I just keep things like they are? Reinstall with Win 2008 64 bit on host OS? If so then should I use VM Server or Hyper V?

A:Stick with VMware server or move to Hyper V

With 12GB of RAM, I think you'll see a significant performance boost using a 64bit system since you then avoid PAE.

After i updated to Windows 8.1 Enterprise from Windows 8 Enterprise, Hyper-V does not function correctly.
When I add an iso image to a new virtual server or start one of my existing, I can see the iso file is loaded in the bottom thumbnail.

But when I connect to the virtual server it just says: Connecting to virtual server... and it times out after 5minutes.

All my virtual servers are running locally, they are able to start and are running fine, I just cannot connect to them.
Also the ability to turn virtual servers off tends to hang and I have to kill the processes and restart the services for it to stop.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this problem?

Hi Everyone,

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64bit on my HP laptop (i7-3632QM, 8GB RAM).
I have configured Windows Server 2008 64bit VM on hyper-v with External Virtual Switch.

Wondering what should I do if I want to create two other VMs (W7 & XP) which only be able to communicate with the Server VM? By that I mean, for accessing Internet, they should go through windows 2008 server VM. Should I create another Switch (Private or Internal) for those two VMs? How these two VMs (W7 & XP) can be configured so that they will use DNS & DHCP server configured on Windows Server 2008 VM?

Any suggestions and/or tutorial links would be greatly appreciated.

One other point I would like to mention here. After configuring that external virtual switch with Hyper-V, HP Support assistant has failed to connect to Internet though I can access Internet successfully. I will create a different post for that.

Thank you.

Hi there.

I LIKE the idea of a bare metal Hypervisor - I've tried Esxi (VMware) in the past and although it works it's a bit fiddly on what hardware it works on and there's no CLI for managing VM's --you have to do this with a separate machine using vCenter which USED TO BE FREE -- and now this part is NOT available in the free offering any more (if you upgrade to the latest version of ESXI (5.5) you won't be able to manage / modify VM's any more - at least in the FREE offering -- you have to BUY the latest vCenter -- so I've now junked Esxi.

It seems from Internet discussions that Free ESXI might be being phased out anyway so a good time to jump ship to Ms.

Does 2012 HYPER-V SERVER R2 (it's FREE BTW) work decently as a hypervisor -- I'm only really interested in running Windows VM's.

I actually quite like W2012 SERVER but I don't really need the full server edition for hosting VM's. I want to use W2012 server as a VM anyway.

I've been quite a happy user of VMware workstation in the past but it's quite expensive and needs a full blown OS to run on even though it can now run VM's in the background.

I need to run the following Guest OS's (or VM's) on it ===> W2003 server, 2 XP PRO VM's (one ENG, on ISL), one W7 Enterprise, one W8.1 Enterprise and one W2012 server .

The Host machine has plenty of RAM and storage and has a decent 3.2 GHZ QUAD processor in it so running these VM's should be fine in theory... Read more

A:HYPER-V SERVER R2 (Esxi 5.5 needs PAID vCENTER - vmware)

Vcenter server was Never free Jimbo.

You can still use the existing client to manage vms on the free esxi 5.5, but you need to be sure that you do NOT upgrade the vm hardware on these VMs to version 10. Even newly created vms will start as version 8, it's a manual process to upgrade them and it comes with a warning that the web client will be required.

I'm actually pretty surprised this is being handled this way, but it's not likely a big issue unless you ignore the warnings.

HyperV was never a product I liked. Prior to Windows 8, remotely managing vms was a total nightmare with a bunch of dcom stuff you had to manually set up. It's still a crapshoot whether a Linux vm is going to work. I steer clear of this supervisor.

Citrix Zen server is a free product. Pretty good too.

Hey community. I was hoping for some clarification. I am use to working with VMWare ESXi VSphere for hypervisors. So I have been labbing for my MCSA and I notice alot of the context of MCSA material describes installing an instance of Windows Server 2016,
and then turning that into a Hyper-V Server. What I did was I installed Hyper-V Server 2016 on my ProLiant. Is there any reason why I would not want to do this ? I had to reference alot of white papers, manuals, eventually blogs, and I think a youtube video
or two before I could manage it from my remote PC. It involved adding the target computer via power shell, customizing the hosts file, adding the server within the PC's computer configuration I forget what exactly. I also had to disable the firewall on the
Hyper-V Server 2016 before the Hyper-V Server 2016 hosted on the ProLiant started appearing in my Hyper-V Manager from my Windows 10 Pro machine.

However I was listening to this gentleman's youtube video.
and he explains that Hyper-V Server is meant to be installed as a bare metal Hypervisor which is what I did do but because i was accustomed to working with VMWare SAN's that are the same way where you install the Hypervisor on the host machine and start
spinning up virtual machines. However I noticed i got some updates on the Hyper-V-Server 2016 the other day and not all of them wanted to install ... I believe some of the updates were for Windows so it went int... Read more

I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

For the past year now my computer has been somewhat randomly crashing. It mostly BSOD after a few seconds of trying to watch a youtube video but some times I can go hours and not a single BSOD. It has BSOD when I have nothing running and just go afk for a few minutes. My brother and I have been testing every single part, I currently have two computers and I have been switching back and forth between the parts and it's still BSOD. We thought it might have been a virus I have been getting but we tested it and I only had steam, minecraft and garry's mod installed, all three trusted things and it would still crash the second I got on youtube and try to play a video. I have tried the fix where you uncheck the box that says "Use hardware acceleration when available" and it is still crashing. I have also tried different browsers, Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. My brother and I are running out of ideas as to what could be causing the crashing. Oh and no idea if this makes a difference but the last computer I tested I somehow managed to fry the power supply and I am using the same one I used on the dell I have. I have an old dell and custom build computer and the only things that they have had in common while testing this entire time is software, the power supply and the wiring to the wall, which was a theory of mine. I live in a 60 year old house and I think it's bad wiring causing it to crash but I could, and probably am, wrong. Any ideas at all would be greatly ap... Read more

I hope you can help, this BSOD is driving me nuts!

I bought the system, custom built, over two years ago. After a few weeks I had a BSOD - the error suggests checking any hardware I installed recently but as it was all new I ignored it.

A few weeks went by and then another one...then another. The problem is every time I try to do something to address the problem I think I've fixed it because the BSOD is so sporadic! I can get it after half an hour or usage with several in one day or I can use it for hours without any problem and not see one for weeks!

It came with Vista Premium (32 bit) pre-installed. After months of this Windows 7 came out so I upgraded to Windows 7 and chose the wipe clean and upgrade from scratch option. I thought I'd beat it but then hardly used my PC for months afterwards.

Until early December. I've been using it regular since and the BSOD is back. I've done everything! I've upgraded the graphics card to the latest drivers, flashed the BIOS to the latest (none-Beta) version, I have AVAST and Spybot Seek & Destroy installed which I update and run regularly, I've defragged the HD, run every diag and benchmarking program I can think of and all have passed. I've opened the case up to check for anything loose, cleaned all the dust out. I've set the BIOS to default and turned all overclocking off, enabled the AMD Cool N Quiet option and set the power management setting in windows to power save mode in case it was a overheating issue.

As a last cours... Read more

This is one of the first (if not the first) dual CPU shootout I've seen. Amazing things from AMD...

Database Server CPU Comparison: Athlon MP vs. Hyper Threading Xeon

Date: April 4th, 2002
Type: IT/Enterprise Computing
Manufacturer: Various
Author: Anand Lal Shimpi

If you wanted to find out what the fastest desktop CPU is, it would just take a few clicks and you would have 10 reviews at your disposal. If you're trying to put together a workstation system, you'll have a bit less to go off of but there is still more than enough information available to help make your decision. But when it comes to servers, the information flow is severely reduced.

Generally speaking, you'll find reviews of individual servers from Dell and HP but you won't find the type of component level comparisons we're used to seeing in the desktop and workstation sectors.

There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, it's very difficult to test the performance of CPUs and platforms in a server environment without actually setting up such an environment. Especially as you get into the 4-way and beyond realms, it becomes very difficult to stress those systems. There are industry standard benchmarks that can be used but again, they are very costly to run and require a great deal of setup. In the desktop and workstation worlds, you simply load up the application you wish to measure performance under and find a benchmark to help you gauge... Read more
