T520 with "No Audio Output Device"; Conexant drivers won't reinstall because no device is found

Q: T520 with "No Audio Output Device"; Conexant drivers won't reinstall because no device is found

For six months or so, I've had a problem where my laptop's audio will stop working. The red "X" appears over the volume icon in the system tray and audio will not function whatsoever. Until now, rebooting has been 99% successful at restoring the audio until it eventually fails again. But in the last three days, my normal quick fix no longer does the trick. Apparently my laptop can no longer find the actual Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD hardware on the motherboard. This is a T520 laptop running Win 7 with SP1. The T520 is roughly six years old, so I realize the hardware's age might be a factor. There are definitely other issues related to its age (general performance sluggishness, inability to wake up from sleep mode, backup no longer works correctly) and I will eventually have to replace the laptop. But in the meantime, solving this persistent audio issue will buy me at least a few more months, so it's worth fixing to me. I've found dozens of threads that suggest reinstalling the device drivers, which of course I have tried several times using the drivers here. The problem: After rebooting, the device manager still doesn't list any playback device ("No audio devices are installed") even with both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" checked. Similarly, when I run the 8aad14ww.exe device installer, it terminates with an error message ("Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver"). Has the hardware itself actually died? Am I out of luck or can anyone recommend a few steps for troubleshooting that I may not have already tried? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

i recently lost the audio on my computer, the audio shortcut on the taskbar is crossed and if I click it, it will automatically launch the troubleshooting, which detects the problem and asks me to restart. when i do, there is no change and the process is repeated.
I entered device manager and sound, video and game controllers did not appear, when i showed the hidden ones, they appeared, all of them had the message " not connected" and (Code 45).
I then uninstalled all of the drivers of sound in there and restarted, the drivers were not re-installed. then i entered the dell website and downloaded the audio driver they have in there, installed and nothing happened.
the problem is still the same and now i can not even find the drivers

I am getting the dreaded "A Conexant audio device could not be found. " error on boot. I have a ZBook 17 G3 (Energy Star). Running Window 10 Pro (64bit). I've tried all previously recommended fixes and nothing works. I check BIOS and audio is enabled. There is no Conexant audio device in device manager. I have reinstalled drivers and have run the troubleshooter. In Device Manager, I can't disable/enable the driver for Conexant because it isn't present. I don't understand why this problem persists. I see the first reported case back in 2010. Why can't this get fixed?

Welcome to TSG forum

I do' know if this will work in this situation, but www.belarc.com when d/l installed and run will identify everything connected on the computr, Software/hardware, including license/key numbers etc.
Another thing you could try, is going to the HP site and after entering the model number etc of the computer, they can tell you everything that was originally installed on the computer and you may be able to d/l the drivers necessary there.

Greetings and salutations.

I recently upgraded an Acer Aspire 3690 to Windows 7 (32bit) and everything went well, almost. See, for life of me I can't get audio to work. (That old chestnut.) The speaker icon in the notification area displays the white cross/red circle and informs me that "No Audio Output Device is installed". Fine. Okay. Just a driver problem, right?

Well, Device Manager is showing no discrepancies and the two devices associated with the Aspire's audio chipset (Conexant) are installed and happy (Modems/HDA CX11270 Soft Modem, and System devices/High Definition Audio Controller). But there is no entry for Sound, Video and Game Controllers, and that's what concerns me. Acer's driver support page for the 3690 tells me that Realtek powers the audio, but regardless of the potentially compatible audio drivers I've tried to install (most of the Conexant drivers fail with "Driver installation failed: could not find the MEDIA device for this driver" and the Realtek drivers either have no effect or BSOD the machine) I've had no success.

Now if I was running XP then MUAA would, I'm convinced, resolve the issue, but as far as Windows 7 is concerned I'm at a loss. Best I figured, the Realtek drivers should latch onto the High Definition Audio Controller then provide an Audio Output Device, but nothing's happening. I'm convinced that the physical hardware's fine because the Soft Modem diagnostics provide feedback, and the BIOS has been updated to 3... Read more

A:Acer Aspire 3690 w/ Conexant: "No Audio Output Device is installed"

I'm assuming you upgraded from Vista/XP. With and upgrade to a different OS and there are devices that don't work right away with the latest drivers tells me that the BIOS for the MOBO needs to updated/flashed. I would start there first. Sometimes the old BIOS are just not compatible with a new version of an OS.

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

Hi @JD_gin?,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion x2 Notebook and issues with sound drivers not installed correctly. In the Device Manager, right-click on Double-click on Sound, video, and game controllers and select all that are listed and uninstall the Driver Software. Here is the download to the Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driversp69248.exe. You could  try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows.  Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed! You could also try in the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adaptors to expand that categoryRight-click on Graphics and select Update Driver Software if more than 1 Graphics adapter do 1 at a time.Choose the option to Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driverAfter the installation is complete, restart your Notebook. Please let me know how this goes. You can say thanks for trying to help by clicking the Thumbs Up below!.Thanks.

I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it?

(It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

A few weeks back I got an ASUS ROG GL752VW. During my initial set up in the first few days, I went into device manager, to my sound card, which is Conexant brand and updated the drivers. This caused the sound on my laptop to completely stop working upon a restart. Attempting to download the Windows 10 64bit drivers for the soundcard, uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling the newly download ones did not work. I have include screenshots of what is shown WITH the conexant drivers installed. When I try and look at playback devices when right clicking volume, NOTHING comes up.
As a work around, I uninstalled the conexant drivers and ran sound using the default windows 'High Definition Audio Device', which worked fine until the other day, when for some reason my sound quality took a massive drop and has started crackling and popping whenever sound plays. The ONLY thing I did software/hardware wise at the time this Crackling issue started was install Logitech Gaming Software for my new mouse. It does appear to be driver related as it does the same through either laptop speakers or headphones.

I have tried the fixes found in this thread: Windows 10 no sound SOLUTION (CONEXANT) - Page 3 - Windows 10 Forums including the final regedit idea, but nothing has worked. The only thing I haven't tried is the installing older Windows 7/8 drivers suggestion.

I tried to update the drivers manually but it says Windows Cannot Find Support for your Base System Device and it says my High Definition Audio is already up to date. I have also tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting Windows to let the system automatically search and update the drivers. This too has failed. I do not have my Windows 7 disc available at the moment to be able to do a clean install.

Give this site a try:

HP Business Support Center

It is not tech support provided by HP. It is voluntary support provided by HP business users. But there are some savvy people on there. As an example, I had HP PCs with Intel chips that kept locking up due to overheating. The fans never bumped up to higher speed when the CPU got hot. Turns out there was an "Easter Egg" or undocumented hotkey that opened a page in the BIOS setup they don't tell you about in the manual. On that page I could set the fan speeds and trigger temperatures.

I found out about that setup page in the HP business forum.

This is the message I get "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

If thats a old computer model then there probably aren't any windows 7 drivers for it.

You could possibly search for customer drivers, or homemade drivers. However i have never used them so i wouldn't recommend it, but it could be a option.

My HP Pavilion DV9000 laptop has no sound. During Device Manager does not show any sound. I had sound, it worked, but today I had nothing. I have a Windows 7 Ultimate on it. I do not understand anything. What could be the cause?
thank you

Those HP dv9000's run hot and it is possible that the sound chip on the motherboard has failed... If this is the case, there should be a yellow exclamation point on the audio device driver in the device manager

After looking at you specs I really need to know what CPU you are running, whether you are using an internal sound card (on mother board), or PCI card, and if so the manufacture, and the age of the card. The sound card may not be supported either. Also even if you are running a 32 bit version of Win 7 512 of ram is just a might to low. You system would run a lot smoother with 2 gigs.

Hi, you are best served by getting your drivers from the manufacturers site rather then relying on a third party util.

Did your sound work previously, and did it stop hence the need to get new drivers?

Lets see if windows recognizes your sound device. Go to search and type:- command prompt, search will return command prompt, right click on this and select "run as administrator" an elevated cmd prompt will open copy and paste the below cmd into the prompt window:-

wmic sounddev get Caption, DeviceID, PNPDeviceID, Manufacturer, status /Format:List > 0 & notepad 0

Press enter, please post the notepad outcome here.

I'm using a HP Compaq nc6400 and I've recently installed Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

Since installing it, I had a problem with my sound, which was as the title states, no audio output device. I've been through several drivers, none of which worked, and I've also tried sound max, which has in fact worked, however I can't stand the little sound bar when you up or down the volume, and it's fairly unresponsive when I use the buttons on my laptop. So in all fairness, I just want the actual driver designed to work with this laptop.

I do have a version of Windows 7 Home Premium, not too sure if it'd make much difference, however I'd rather not go through another OS install as I've got most of my stuff already set up on this now!

I am good with computers so don't be afraid to get technical, but I just need another angle on this because it's most likely just something I'm overlooking.

Thanks for any help,

Adam

Your machine according to the HP site has no support for Win7. Are you trying to install the Vista sound drivers? If you are, run the install in Compatibility Mode

I have installed an Asus Xonar DX 7.1 (Working in perfectly in Vista) and I have also installed the drivers from the cd which installed without errors. I have also downloaded asus win 7 beta drivers yet I still get no sound.

In device manager I can see my asus card with the yellow ! signs. If I try to update the drivers it says I have the latest up to date drivers

At the bottom right near the clock it still reports no audio output device is installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Mike

Right click on your card in Device Manager and select Properties, what does it list (if anything) for an error code?

I have recently bought a brand new Inspiron 15 (3000 series, Windows 10). I can't get any sound out of it.
I've run Dell diagnostics, installed the latest Realtek audio driver as recommended, and rebooted. Still no sound. I've contacted Tech Support, who are suggesting it might be necessary to return the machine to depot. Is there any other solution out there? (there appears to be around 15,000 posts on audio issues, and I really don't have the patience to go through all of them!)

If you did not hear sounds during the PSA audio test, which is a hardware test, then there is not a software solution. Anything you do to fix the failed hardware, such as replacing the motherboard or the speakers, would void the warranty, at least partially.
A "workaround" would be to get a usb audio device, such as a jack, speakers, or headphones. But although such a device would produce audio even with failed hardware in the laptop, obviously it would not be a fix.

That's okay. I've done it for you. (Took a few years.)

If the laptop is still in the very brief "return period", you can return it for being defective and get your choice of a refund or replacement. If the return period has expired, then you are stuck with having it serviced under the terms of your warranty.
