Hotmail receiving picture attachments as .txt files

Q: Hotmail receiving picture attachments as .txt files

I have a @hotmail.com email address and I use it in-browser. Whenever I get an email with a picture attachment this happens. I know the sender is sending the picture properly because I can access it on my phone through the email app. Im not sure whats going on and I never had this problem before and its completely new and came out of the blue. All I've tried so far is using different browsers and doing multiple virus, malware and spyware scans.
I've googled around and also searched this forum and havent found answer. I appreciate any help! Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I attempt to open the second the screen goes gray and closes down, then windows mail restarts.
Is there any fix that you know of??

Right click save as. Usually more reliable than just clicking on the attachment. Make sure you save to some where you can find it.

I have recently installed a dashcam in my car. I download the one minutes worth of video into windows media player as a file but Hotmail refuses to pick it up as an attachment as the size is greater than 25mb and says use Onedrive but I cant work out how to upload to One Drive and then locate the uploaded file and then attach from that location. Can anyone help please?

A:Solved: Hotmail attachments -problem with car dashcam files

No you cannot do that, you are missing the point entirely.
Hotmail will not accept an attachment that large, so if you need to share the file you need to upload it to a shared folder in One Drive, then send the link (from within One Drive) to whoever needs to access it; they will be able to follow the link to download the file. That's it. Alternatively you can upload it to any free file sharing service and email the download link to whoever you want to share it with.
Most email system will not accept attachments that large, so file sharing is your best bet.

I think they meant as attachments, versus doing an Insert Picture.

Just attach as you would with any other file. Insert File Attachment, or the PaperClip.

There are times when I need to receive files that are in Outlook's prohibited list.

I just received an email in my Gmail account that was forwarded from my husband. It had an attachment, but no attachment came through. This has happened before but I disregarded it as a bad email or attachment. However, this was an important attachment which I did receive using my Netzero email address. I have checked my settings by and the only one that refers to images is set to open all images (from trusted sites). When I received it in Netzero, I had 3 small images at the bottom of the email. When I viewed the original in my husband's Yahoo account, the three pictures were actually part of the email. HELP. What's happening in Gmail....and why would the email appear differently in Netzero than in Yahoo? I'm so confused. I'm using Windows 7 on a Dell Laptop running the same exact programs as my husband on his laptop.

I am not receiving attachments from at least one sender on MSN mail. The attachments DO show up on my corresponding Hotmail account and I can open them there. The sender is on my MSN safe list. I can open/view the attachments in my MSN account if I forward the original email with the attachment from my Hotmail account to myself at my MSN account.

I have also turned my firewall/virus protection "off"; restarted my MSN program but that does not allow me to receive the attachments from the original sender either. Like before, I do get the email, but no attachments are shown even though the sender did attach.

Running Windows Vista.

Whenever I receive emails from one particular email domain (there are several people that regularly send me emails from this domain), the attachments come through as a single winmail.dat file rather than the actual PDF, XLS, etc, files.

This happens on all devices (MacBook, iPhone, iPad, and my colleagues Samsung and Laptop) and mail software (currently using Outlook, but have tried Apple Mail and same issue).

The only way to retrieve the attachments is to login to the online server/host and then either download from there or forward the email to myself, in which case they come through fine.

Emails with attachments sent from any other domain are fine, just this particular one is having the issue.

I am not super savey when it comes to computers, but up until this point I have not had any problems. I am having trouble with one or two recipients not able to open my attachments, but everybody else is not having problems. One of my friends, who is local, says none of the attachments can be opened. Another friend in Europe has similar problems, he says in his last communication "I can only see the file NAMES in the "nature photo" one,
and I can't see anything in the "Redneck" and "All aboard" one". This are just photo files. I usually will just forward them if someone has sent them to me, but that doesn't seem to work. I have creating a new message and then cut and paste from the forward message to the new message, and that doesn't work either.

Hi,
I belong to this Fantasy Football League with some friends. When the commissioner e-mails everyone a word document attachment, my attachment is a file of type .dat when I receive it. When I right click the attachment and select "Open Attachment With.." a dialog box reads "These files are used by the operating system and by various programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system." I then click the cancel button. Why am I experiencing this problem and not the other people in the league? I use Eudora 5.2 for my e-mail. Could the problem be caused by the way the commissioner is naming the files? This problem did not always happen. I did not have a problem when she named the files "Fantasy Football Transactions". But now she puts a date in the file name. For example "Fantasy Football Transactions Nov. 12".

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Problem receiving e-mail attachments

I think the real question should be is "Why is the commish. send out Word files at .dat??? The warning you are receiving is appropriate for that type of file because it (dat) IS a system file and; as a rule should NOT be opened by you,...or me or anyone else for that matter...*.DOC and *.DOT are both valid Word extensions maybe she is naming the files manually?? If they ARE in fact Word files you can ignore the waring and use "Open with...: to select your Word application with no ill affects

Check your settings. If you need to know how to set up the mail I have the instruction on my web site. Check them and make sure everything is entered correctly. Check periods and make sure they are not commas. I have made this mistake so many times and also other mistakes and just didn't see them at the moment so check them very carefully.

I am running Vista with Windows Mail.
I am not able to receive attachment from my boss who is running Windows 7 & Outlook.

I have been on his computer and found that he is sending HTML messages (not RTF). I also tried changing my email settings in his address book send plian text only to me. Nothing.

I found update KB905866 on my update list. I read that this was a Windows Mail update for spam. I deleted it and I am still having the problem.

If you can help, that would be amazing!

Really frustrated as I'm waiting for a couple of important things via email. I can send email fine from hotmail to other accounts. When I send an email from another account to my hotmail I do not get an error message but still no email shows up in hotmail. Yesterday some emails were delayed, but I've now had nothing for hours and I sent some from other accounts that should be there.

I've tried deleting messages, sending a message from hotmail to see if that kick-started it, checking my privacy settings (they're fine, not on exclusive, checking my blocked senders list - none of the email accounts I know have sent me messages are there).

Please help!! I'll be very grateful!

Hi folks. Tearing my hair out with this and it?s driving me nuts.

I have just recently bought a new windows 8 laptop (now windows 8.1) 64 bit. Have installed office 2007 Standard (32 bit) on it and now I want to configure outlook 2007 to send/receive my hotmail.co.uk account (or is that now outlook.com)? Either way I have scoured the internet and just cannot get it to work. I could choose pop3 but then my mail accounts won?t be synchronised across all my computers so I wanted to go the imap account. If I do this and use the outlook.com settings I can receive email just find but it will not send.

I?ve tried the outlook connector and that makes no difference whatsoever. I?ve tried pop3 and that doesn?t work I?ve also tried imap and that doesn?t work either. I?m blind and know what I?m doing with computers and outlook 2007 is by far the most accessible program for me to access my email through. What am I doing wrong and how can I sort this?

Many Thanks.

A:Receiving hotmail in outlook 2007

It does not matter if you use POP3 or IMAP because when you send mail it depends on the smtp settings. I would recommend you use IMAP. It would be much better to use Outlook Connector that uses custom ActiveSync which should work.

Have you tried to uninstall and install the connector?

Remember Hotmail address will be the same if I say Outlook.com Email which includes the domains live.com, msn.com, and other country ones as well.

Try the connecter with this link:
Use an Outlook.com account in Outlook - Outlook - Office.com

The other thing is this link:
Set up an email app with Outlook.com - Microsoft Windows Help

The answer you might be looking to is the correct SMTP setting:

Outgoing (SMTP) Server
Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked) Authentication: Yes Encrypted Connection: TLS User name: Your email address Password: Your password

I am trying to find a way to use outlook to check my hotmail account. I have Outlook 2000. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:Receiving hotmail email in outlook

As far as I am aware, you cannot easily use Oulook 2000 for hotmail.

Outlook 2002 perhaps, or Outlook Express will apparently work, but not Outlook 2000.

There is a workaround, which seems to have disappeared from the MS site, however a cached copy is attached below:

CAUSE
Outlook does not support the integration of Hotmail e-mail accounts.

RESOLUTION
You can view your Hotmail e-mail in Outlook by creating a Hotmail folder and then associating a Web view of that folder that points to the Hotmail Web site.

NOTE: The technique outlined in the steps below can be used to view messages from any Web-based e-mail provider, including Yahoo, Lycos, Excite and others.

Creating a Hotmail Folder

On the View menu, click Folder List to turn on the Folder List.
Right-click Outlook Today, and then click New Folder. Name the folder Hotmail and then click OK. Your Folder List should now include a Hotmail mail items folder.

Associating the Hotmail Folder with the Hotmail Web Site
In the Folder List, right-click the Hotmail folder, and then click Properties.

On the Home Page tab, type http://www.hotmail.com in the Address box.

Click to select Show home page by default for this folder, and then click OK.
Now when you click the Hotmail folder in your folder list, you will see the option to log on to your account. You can add a Hotmail folder shortcut to your Outlook Bar by dragging the Hotmail folder to the Outlook Bar.

I have 2 Hotmail accounts with MSN. My primary account I pay for (MSN Plus or something) & the other is basic and free. I'm paid up on the primary account.
I have 2 IBM Thinkpads, a T41(XP Pro) & a T21(Windows 2000). I opened Outlook Express this morning & found 1 new email-- from eBay (it had my correct user name so I don't think it is a spoof). I tried to delete it but it wouldn't delete. A window says: An Unknown Error Has Occured. So I closed Outlook Express & accessed my primary Hotmail account through the internet. I tried to delete the message there. It seemed to delete and got as far as the trash but when I tried to empty it, it re-appeared in its original place-- as an unopened email. I was not able to delete any other emails.
I was able to send an email to my secondary Hotmail account.
But when I opened the secondary account & sent an email to my primary account, it was not received. Also, I always receive an email from Dictionary.com with a new word each morning and nothing came. So I'm concluding that somehow my primary Hotmail account is stuck or blocked.
Any suggestions are deeply appreciated. Thanks! -M

I hope someone can help me!
When someone sends me an email with a picture it comes up with a red x in a blank box and a code "cid:[email protected]" why? I use outlook express and windows xp.
Tonight I spoke to my internet provider, he went on my computer via "beam your screen" and said I have a xp virus and need to take my computer in to the shop and have it cleaned out. He did try system restore and could not access it. I have noticed an icon "personal antivirus" somehow it planted itself on my computer I had used add and remove programs but the icon is still there. I was surprised with all of this as I only wanted to know what to do to get rid of the red x thing and be able to access all my picture emails.
I tried to run Hijack this program all I got was a message saying setup wizzard ended prematurely because of an error and my system is not modified and try again later.
Any help would be very helpful.

The referance to "application" doesn't sound too promising. Please go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do the online virus scan. I'll return after a bit of research...

Edit...
Just out of interest, the user who sent this wouldn't be using a MAC, would they? This is the first result of a Google Search...

I am accustomed to using Outlook Express to e-mail pictures as attachments to my e-mails by clicking on (1) START - (2) MY PICTURES, then click selecting picture I want to send and in FILE & FOLDERS TASKS pane, click selecting ( 3) E-MAIL THIS FILE. In pop-up window ( 4) SEND PICS Via E-MAIL, I select size preference and click OK. Previously this brought up an OE compose screen in which picture I had selected appeared as an attachment. However this feature has stopped working, now after executing (4) above, compose screen fails to appear on screen.

Can anyone suggest what may be the cause of this problem, and how I can resolve it. I have an HP Compaq computer running Windows XP HE, SP2. I only have HP's Restore Disks so cannot simply re-install Windows XP, or selectively reinstall Outlook Express.

If your email app shows that there are attachments on the email, then the issue is with the app on the phone and presumably it is stripping attachments.

Can you try another app or tell people which app it is so maybe they can offer ideas.

I have a Vista computer system. When on Hotmail, I cannot open attachments I receive. When I click on the attachment, I then click on "open". There's a quick screen with some reference to temporary files, and then nothing. It's like I'm waiting for a .pdf file to open, but it never does.

I can open these attachments on other computers through hotmail, so it's specific to my computer. I'm wondering if it's some quirk about Vista?

Can anyone help me with this? I'd sure appreciate it.

Hi,

Does anyone know why Hotmail doesn't always forward attachments, jpegs for instance? Sometimes I get a funny email with some good pics but have to save the images, then copy and paste, etc, etc, etc. Very annoying!

Thanks in advance.

I have Windows XP Home and IE 6. Comcast.net is my broadband provider. My daughter uses Hotmail for her email. She cannot open any email even Word documents that I send her. I can't figure it out. Thanks.

A:Can't open hotmail attachments

How is she retrieving her email from Hotmail? From the website? Or with Outlook Express? If she's using OE, then she probably has the Attachments feature disabled.
