internet explorer 8 custom protocol handling with dde

Q: internet explorer 8 custom protocol handling with dde

i am having an issue with a custom protocol that we currently have setup on all of our systems. This custom protocol is automatically setup and configured during the installation of one of our core apps.

the behavior that we are having is as follows:
- if i open the run dialog and type in nds://1234567890, the application opens and automatically brings up record #1234567890
- if i have an excel spreadsheet containing links in the above format, and i click a link, i get the same behaviour as above (works as expected)

- when i click on the above link from a webpage in ie8, i recieve 2 errors
1. a window titled nds://1234567890 with the error "there was a problem sending the command to the program"
2. a second window titled Internet Explorer saying unable to open the helper application for nds://1234567890. The protocol specified in this address is not valid. Make sure the address is correct and try again.
We are trying to do this on win7 x64 sp1 and all pc's are joined to a domain. I dont know if DDE co es into play with this, but i do know theremis a dde section in the registry underthis protocol/clsid values. i dont know if this is
an IE policy issues, or something else ( the fact that it worls outside of IE is what is stumping me).
any help would be very appreciated
thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I think you will have to either turn off protected mode for your users using Group Policy or ask the vendor for a fix for the protocol handler...
here is some reading...for them...

For some very weird reson, my mom's computer will not automatically insert the (http://) protocol in Internet Explorer 6 SP2.

In other words, if I were to type "www.google.com" into the Internet Explorer address bar, nothing would happen. No search page saying the file cannot be found, nothing. It will remain at the webpage that it is currently viewing. If I were to type "http://www.google.com" into the address bar, it would work fine.

I know that this isn't the most troubling problem in the world, but it is a nuisance, especially for her since she quite the computer amateur. I'm not whiz myself, and cannot figure this problem out. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

This coupled with Microsoft Edge's unpredictable website loading with frequent Network's internet connection disconnecting to the brink of unusability; nothing; even Microsoft Edge Reset won't resolve these scenarios.
And now Microsoft Edge DEV; with all above said problems and beta version errings uses 1.5 GB of 4G ISP full speed memory to send computer information to Microsoft within half day of 12 hrs. day, rest of day goes with crawling speed of ISP setted 64 Kbps

Hi,

I have a home LAN intranet used for a shared calendar, documents and some videos, this works great and is very useful but, I decided that I wanted the videos to open in VLC Media Player instead of converting them all to flash or using Divx Webplayer etc.

I researched creating a URL protocol, then created "vlc://", this opens VLC attempting to play the file, but, it trys to play the URL with the protocol vlc:// which gives an error saying it can't play, my question is how do I get the program to open using the "vlc://" protocol and then play the "http://" video link.
Video showing the problem:

I've modified the icons in my shell32.dll using Resource Hacker and when I've applied it Internet Explorer fails to start. It gives an error which reads,

"iexplore.exe - Entry Point Not Found"
The procedure entry point
shell32.SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModeID could not be located in the dynamic link library api-ms-win-downlevel-shell32-l1-1-0.dll."

When I revert back to my previous shell32.dll which is also custom one, IE10 is working fine, so I think it is Resource Hacker that is causing this problem. I've tried modifying shell32.dll using Restorator 2007 but it gives me an error with "corrupt icon resource." I don't know what else to use to modify shell32.dll that won't make any problem with IE10. Any solution or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hi,

I am wanting to build a c/c++ program for (mostly for educational purposes but for practicality as well) that will disconnect my router from the internet, enter my password into the text box on the next page and then connect again whenever I occasionally have internet problems (as they say on the IT crowd "try turning it off and on again").

Router Home Menu (ignore highlights):

http://www.winmxworld.com/images/bt_homehub-step1.png

I'm thinking of something like this (roughly coded):
Code:
#include <Windows.h>
#include <String>NULL

void main()
{

std::string Password = "thepassword";

system("iexplore 192.168.1.254");
Hwnd WinID = FindWindow("IEFrame", "BT Home Hub - Internet Explorer");

/* Somehow I want to do this:

1. Click "disconnect" button
2. Enter Password in next textbox
3. Click "Ok"
4. Click "disconnect" button again
5. Then click "Connect"

I Assume its gonna involve a handle but of course I'm not sure (hence why I'm asking)..

*/

}
Any advice/help would be brilliant please

Thanks

I have tried several ways and nothing is successful. Which setting is to be done for enabling this setting while connected to Domain account?

Hi Everyone,

My Windows 7 installation has just developed a strange issue with file handling.

When I attempt to change a file name, e.g.: document.txt, Explorer doesn't reflect the change on screen.

So if I open Explorer navigate to a file and then rename, for example:

document.txt is renamed to a.txt, then Explorer still shows "document.txt".

If I then attempt to rename documnet.txt I get a message along the lines of "this file is no longer available".

Clicking on the back / forward arrows (to move between directories) allows the file name to refresh!

This problem first presented itself when my Windows 7 installation crashed.

The crash occurred whilst I was running VMware Workstation (XP - SP3 client), and XP mode both at the same time, so essentially I had two guest operating systems and the host all running at once.

I believe that the issue may be related to the fact that 3 operating systems (1 - host, & 2 guests) had access to the file system at the same time.

If anybody knows a fix for this issue or has any ideas regarding how this issue might be fixed they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Davo

thanks, any help is appreciated

A:question about handling 2 internet connections

Per computer can only handle one internet connection at a time unless you go all out and get a Duel Internet Connection Router or by someway make Windows 2008 Server work like that especially when that is what that OS does best but I haven't messed around with that OS to even know if it can do that.

I know that OS can bridge networks but when it comes to duel internet connections. You may run into a big problem without the Duel Wan Router.

Hi,
I have a strange problem with my uncles desktop pc. That pc has to be always on for video recording but once in a while Windows will automatically reboot and i just can't exactly find out why.
But why i did found out is that he's always getting 3 error messages (in the Windows event viewer) about 20 min prior to the unplanned reboot.
These are the error message in the event viewer:
1) The following fatal alert was generated: 10. The internal error state is 1203 --> Schannel ID3688 --> time: 19:00
2) The same as above on the exact same time with same event
3) RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client --> TermDD ID50 --> Time: 19:48 (about 25 min prior to the reboot)
Who can help me out here. This is driving me crazy. Sometimes we miss days of recording, while we aren't using that PC for other things.
Thanks in advance!

I did quite a bit of online research prior to asking my own question, but none of  the solutions I've found online really pertain to the issue we're experiencing.
We have 2 Windows 7 Pro PCs in the office.  They are accessed via RDP from within the same network/location.  The systems that are accessing these 2 PCs are an XP Pro machine and a Mac.  The clients stay connected for randomly lengths of time
(no longer than 1 hour) before the session goes black and disconnects them randomly.  When the disconnect occurs, it's not due to inactivity.  The user has to wait several minutes before they are able to reconnect.
On the Windows 7 PCs, Event Viewer gives:
Event ID: 50  The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.
Event ID: 56  The Terminal Server security layer detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.
I've seen suggestions of checking registry keys and a lot of suggestions regarding Windows Server and Terminal Server, but they don't apply to our situation.  Please let me know if more information is required.  Thank you!

A:The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.

Hi,

Do you enable the
IEEE 802.1x authentication?

Regarding the issue, I suggest updating the network adapter driver manually on Windows 7 PCs. Also update the router's driver and firmware.

If the issue persists, you could disable the TCP Offload. To do this,

a.
Run the following commands on both the client and the server to disable NIC offloading.

netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled

netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled

b.
Modify the following registry key to disable netDMA on the client and the server.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\EnableTCPA

Note: If this registry entry does not exist, right-click Parameters, point to New, click DWORD Value, type EnableTCPA, and then press ENTER.

Value: 0

You can also refer to the following KB to troubleshoot the issue. Hope it helps.

Hello, there is quite a number of threads on this topic, and some suggested approaches. The problem appears to arise with build 10586 (the 'November upgrade').

It could also help if you complete your system specs (esp what type of wifi card you have e.g.).
(If unsure how to do that there is a Tutorial - see link above)
Do you also have this problem with an ethernet connection?

This refers to the build change and suggests a somewhat radical command:
Networking not working after Windows 10 Update (version 1511, build 10586.3) VirtualRick

A quick scan of these threads suggests:

(please read the whole thread)

Note this one referring to a Windows Update:

This one suggests registry patches:

I am trying to set up my Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). I am not sure of the IP address for my computer (one of four connected to broadband through a lan in my office). I forgot to note it down when reformatting my hard disk recently. But I have a good idea of what it might be since I have the IP addresses of the other three computers. Unfortunately I am not in a position to contact the Service Provider and no one here seems to have the list of numbers.
What I want to know is this?
Are the Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses the same for all four computers? Is it only the IP addresss that is different? It will be easier for my (by trial and error) to hit on the right IP Address if that is the only address I have to worry about.

I don't know much about IPv6. Even this 'introductory' video is too technical for me in parts!; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wa7y3W2DI0&feature=related

One thing I do remember reading last year, when IPv6 Day was held, was that it wouldn't have much impact on home users until the majority of ISP's enabled the new protocol on their servers. I assume that will cost money so they'll only do it when IPv4 addresses are closer to exhaustion.

EDIT: Attempts to post the video URL seem to produce a 'freeze frame'. Go to www.explania.com and search 'What is IPv6?'

(I have Windows XP) I was trying to clean out my computer for more disk space, so I was deleting files I thought I didn't need in my Program Files. I have a habit of deleting by using SHIFT+DELETE, which permanently deletes the file without sending it to the Recycle Bin. So I went into a folder titled "Bin" and deleted a bunch of what I thought was gibberish (weird file names). I also deleted other things I thought were unimportant.

Who would've thought that after doing that stupid act, I can no longer upload files, send files, OR view videos in my Windows Media Player.

ANOTHER THING: It also sometimes gives me an error message saying Windows met an error and had to close. I was viewing My Computer when it happened, and when I clicked more info. it said that I was missing an Internet Protocol (IP)..so I'm wondering how I can get it back?

Someone please tell me what I'm missing

you dont need to write in capitals - its considered shouting

Make sure you have the latest driver on the adapter

how do you connect to the router by cable or wireless

If the IP is changing then you are possibly connecting to a different network
OR your lease time is very short

lets see an ipconfig /all

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the information above those entries

I have an old Quantex laptop that was handed down to me running windows 98. I had it all set up with a D-Link wireless card to a D-Link wireless router. It was working fine. It stopped working and like an idiot I pulled out the D-Link card without disabling it while the laptop was running. I have installed and re-installed the D-Link drivers and software and have no problem connecting to the router. The problem is I can't get to the internet because the TCP/IP protocol is missing - I can't bind the D-Link card to the TCP/IP protocol. When I try adding a protocol the window comes up where you highlight what you want to add - protocol, adapter etc. I highlight protocol but nothing happens.

What can I do to get the TCP/IP protocol back?

The source is shown as the service control manager. 2. unable to open the redirector server service. server performance data will not be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0. The source is shown as PerfNet. Ive looked around the Microsoft knowledge base and got the gist of what this is about but have not come up with any answers. If you are not running a VPN connection IPSEC is not needed. If not you can then disable the protocol to stop the error from occurring.
For your second problem I had not a clue so did some searching and I found:

Run exctrlst.exe (Extensible Counter Listing Tool) from the resource kit (see the link below for download) and disable the counter if you don't use it.
As per Microsoft: "The extensible counter list utility (EXCTRLST.EXE) is used to obtain information about the extensible performance counter dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) on a computer running Windows NT/Windows 2000. This utility lists the applications, drivers, and services that are registered to provide performance data through the performance registry. You can use this utility for finding information and for troubleshooting"

According to a user: "To fix this error, I had previously used the EXCTRLST.EXE utility and disabled the performance counters. This stopped the error message appearing in the event viewer, but I still did not have a server service in Services and I got an error message when clicking on shares in Computer Management. Not a big deal I suppose, but I wanted to find out what was wrong. As I have a stand alone machine, I did not have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks installed. So, I went to dial up properties for my Dial up connection, Under Networking, installed the service File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Left the check box for this service bl... I am using a wireless linksys wrt160n router with a linksys AE1000 usb adapter on windows 7. Up until now I have had no problems. A few days ago, I came home to find that we had had a blackout. I had no connection and could not seem to fix it.
Up until that time, I've always used my network connection 4 for internet access but no matter what I did to I couldn't get a connection. So I thought if I disabled this connection and then enabled it that somehow it would reset itself and I would have a connection. Unfortunately when I disabled it there was no option for enabling it because it disappeared. I currently am using network connection 6, but my internet is at a crawling speed.

I searched on how to reinstall network connections 4 and found this page http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-TCP-IP-settings
At the bottom is says to "To install IPv4, run Command Prompt as an administrator, type netsh interface ipv4 install, and then press Enter." I did so successfully and restarted my computer like it said to after inputting the command. But when I brought up my network connections, there was no network connection 4.

I even went to the command prompt and typed ipconfig /all and the IPv4 entries are not there like it used to.
Any help would be appreciated.

thank you

TCP Protocol Controls Routers

POSTED: 4:47 p.m. EDT April 20, 2004

A flaw that could potentially disable large parts of the Internet has sent security experts and governments scambling for a cure, technology Web sites and other sources reported Tuesday.

The problem is with the Transmission Control Protocol, which lets servers that send out information and routers, which decide how it is transmitted, to work together.

Britain's National Infrastructure Security Coordination Center said it could be a critical problem. The advisory says that flaw could be exploited if long TCP connections are shut down unexpectedly.

These are known as "reset attacks," according to News.com. A security researcher named Paul Watson discovered the problem.

An expert described the problem as affecting the glue that holds the Internet together.

Wired.com reported that there has been a secretive effort over the last few months to fix the problem.

Previously, it was thought that there was only about a 1 in 4 billion chance of someone guessing the information needed to cause a reset; Watson showed that it can be guessed within four attempts.

Tuesday's announcement came just two days before Watson is scheduled to present details of his work at an Internet security conference in Vancouver.

Watson predicted hackers would understand how to launch attacks "within five minutes of walking out of that meetin... Read more

A:Protocol Of Internet Backbone Vulnerable To Hacks

How Internet Infrastructure Works
Content provided by HowStuffWorks.com

One of the greatest things about the Internet is that nobody really owns it. It is a global collection of networks, both big and small. These networks connect together in many different ways to form the single entity that we know as the Internet. In fact, the very name comes from this idea of interconnected networks.

Since its beginning in 1969, the Internet has grown from four host computer systems to tens of millions. However, just because nobody owns the Internet, it doesn't mean it is not monitored and maintained in different ways. The Internet Society, a non-profit group established in 1992, oversees the formation of the policies and protocols that define how we use and interact with the Internet.

In this article, you will learn about the basic underlying structure of the Internet. You will learn about domain name servers, network access points and backbones. But first you will learn about how your computer connects to others.

A Hierarchy of Networks

Every computer that is connected to the Internet is part of a network, even the one in your home. For example, you may use a modem and dial a local number to connect to an internet service provider. Or you may use a cable modem or DSL connection. At work, you may be part of a local area network, but you most likely still connect to the Internet using an ISP that your company has contracted with. When you connect to your ISP, you become part ... Read more

Hey everyone, i'm new to this forum due to the problems i'm having with vista. I recently purchased an HP laptop that runs on windows vista. Currently we have 5 computers in our house, they all run on windows XP. We have a Belkin wired and wireless router and a surfboard SB4100 cable modem. Time warner is our internet provider but we have AOL through roadrunner and we are billed from AOL. All our computers that run on XP work fine with no connection problems. The vista computer will not connect to the internet. It connects to the router fine but cannot get an internet connection. I took the laptop to a friends house and there everything works fine and it gets and internet connection so theres nothing wrong with the laptop. I have called AOL, Timewarner, and HP trying to get some answers. after being run in circles by all of them i finally got someone through AOL that told me that because we are billed by AOL they only allow a certain protocol or something through our internet connection. He said that vista does not work with that protocol and the only way that the computer will ever connect to the internet at our house is to cancel the AOL service and get roadrunner from timewarner which uses a different protocol(TCP or something like that) I am wondering if this is true or if there is a work around for this. Thank you very much for all the help.

Sate of connection = red 'x' over network tray icon.

Can't connect through wireless or wired connection. If I try automatic troubleshooting, it says it couldn't identify the problem. I've tried Googling for a while, and have tried Winsock/Winsock2 reg key deletes, several netsh cmd resets, uninstalled and reinstalled hardware/routers (through software, not physically).

In device manager, I have the Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller and Realtek RTL8191SE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter both running (supposedly). Initially, they both had caution symbols on them, but i uninstalled/reinstalled, and now they are clear of symbols. In "IPConfig", the only thing that appears are 2 VMware Network Adapters (they are supposed to be there) and a "Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface" - not sure what that is.

Something else is definitely a major problem: When I open up "System Information", then navigate through Components>Network>Protocol, the entire list, which should have 10 items, is empty.

Any ideas?

Edit: This laptop's networking has been fine for the past 18 months I've had it. I usually leave it on, but turn it off a couple times a week. Yesterday, I turned it off and had it off for about 10-12 hours. When I turned it back on, the connection was not working and the above issues arose.

Hiya

Use the SMTP Internet Protocol Restriction and Accept/Deny List Configuration to programmatically set or view Internet Protocol (IP) restrictions on an SMTP virtual server and to add or remove IP addresses from your global accept or deny lists. Microsoft Exchange 2003 provides connection and relay control for its Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual servers. Additionally, Exchange 2003 provides connection filtering that allows you to configure IP addresses from which you want to accept connections or from which you want to always deny connections. These settings are configured in global accept and deny lists in Connection Filtering. An administrator can use these controls to limit the computers that can connect to a virtual server or that can relay e-mail to outside the Exchange organization.

Note This tool can be used against Exchange 2000 servers but the global accept and deny list configuration is only applicable to Exchange 2003 servers. If Active Directory has been updated with the Exchange 2003 schema then the tool can be used to configure entries on the global accept and deny lists, but this configuration is only available on Exchange 2003 servers.

Open a folder.
Right click on the column headers and you get a context menu.
This menu contains: 'type, size, authors, tags and date modified.

1. What is the correct name of this context menu ?
2. Where do I find it in the registry ?
3. How do I modify it to include "Date Created" ?
