Microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick (Oldie but Goodie)

Q: Microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick (Oldie but Goodie)

I came across an excellent flight simulator (Flight Gear) that makes me want to take the old M/S joystick out of moth balls. Trouble is when I hooked it up, it apparently does not know Windows 7 x64bit from apple butter!
I have a USB adapter that shares a USB2 with a 15 pin game port; so obviously they both function as USB2 ports. The old joystick has a 15 pin plug on it and attaches to this connector, but nothing happens. The machine does not recognize it.
Can this 15 pin game port connection function connected through a USB2 to the Motherboard? Can settings be made to tell the machine that it is there or will the Microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick just not function in that lash-up?
Trying to load the factory included programs/drivers fails because it will not allow Windows 7 to load them. If this type of connection will not function, is there some kind of a card I could get to make it function? And it that is available how does one go about getting a driver that will function with a W-7 x64bit system.
Lots of questions; LOTS of thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I still have my MS Sidewinder Force Feedback peripherals (joystick and wheel). Both are the later USB revisions. They worked to perfection on Windows 7 (just plug and play) but do they work/get recognised by Windows 10?

The way my machine is setup it will be quite an undertaking running the wires etc in and around the desktop and cramped desk space so I'd like to be confident they would still work

does anyone still use these peripherals or similar types? I found it dissapointing MS turned its back on the sidewinder products. Have never been able to get to grips with game pads really. Playing a driving game or flight sim with a game pad just feels unnatural.

If it worked on 7, it likely will work in 10, you may have to reinstall drivers, but in all likely hood the upgrade should be fine.

Force Feedback loses some effects with default driver supplied with vista ultimate 32bit after roughly 2+ effects are applied at once. (it happens in multiple racing games)  I have noticed that it shows steer Left/Right and accelerate as X/Y axis but brake is listed as Z axis.  Shouldn't force feedback be tagged as Z axis?  I have tested the controller with xp and the same games and the controller works fine with the default xp driver.  Sidewinder software wont install on vista so i can't load any different drivers to check if this is the issue.  Note: In the default xp driver it lists left/right/brake/accel. as x/y and z as feedback.  Any ideas?

Hello Tracker,

According to your post, you are now using Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel mouse. This device has no driver for Windows Vista provided by Microsoft. Therefore, some functions may miss, very possibly including the problems you encountered.

For more information about compatibility, please refer to the following site:

For better experience in games, I personally suggest you to upgrade the game device, for example, Microsoft SideWinder Mouse.

Hi everyone.

I have googled for this and found a couple of threads on the subject, but they skim over the actions needed to do what they suggest. Can anyone please fill in the gaps in English that a 10 year old can understand? :/

SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel (USB)

"...some threads I've seen have recommended software solutions to get Force Feedback working. Try PPJoy or GlovePIE and let me know if either one helps."
PPJoy - Parallel Port joystick driver for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP

Glovepie - cannot display the webpage

Say It's not so.. (Sidewinder)

"Hmmm.... I just plugged mine in and Win 7 (x64) installed the drivers and it appears to be in working order, though I've yet to try it with a game."

I plug mine in and it doesn't do anything. At first it brought up the autorun from the disc and that just gives an error message saying "The version of this file isn't compatibile with the version of windows you are using..." But above he said it installed... what was the difference?

"I was able to calibrate my USB force feedback wheel and it works fine..."

"this solution actually worked for me. running in compability mode for xp service pack 2."

I have tried to run compatability mode but I can't find in the "D" drive properties. Where else would I look?

I could carry on, but can anyone help with a solution that works please?

Mike.

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel drivers. Not win7 compatable

I suggest you to install the XP driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.
Follow these steps:
1. Right-click on the installation file and select properties.
2. Now click on the compatibility tab.
3. Under compatibility mode, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.
4. From the drop down menu, select Windows XP(service pack 2).
5. Click Apply and then click OK.

Fine in theory, but which file is the installation file?

Hi,

So it's my birthday & dad bless him has bought me this new joystick, well looks a bit of a beast to me...

Anyway, followed the instructions which said to load the software 1st. When I did this an error mesage came up:

_ins5576 has caused an error in OLEAUT.32.DLL_ins5576 winnowclose

Installation of the software seemed to continue so I thought I was ok, Step 2 is to plug in the joystick via the USB port, did this and this installation programme was supposedto then test the joypad however it came back saying it wasn't connected and I should try uninstalling/reinstall. Did this several times.

Tried adding the software through add/remove programmes & now get a different error message which occurs at 52% of copying the files to C:-

An error occurred during the move data process_115
Componentrogram Files\Win98 Inf Files
File Group:SWWin98Inf
File:C:\windows\Inf\SW\3W98.in_

I've looked on the Control Panel\Gaming Options & the status is "not connected".

I've done a lookup and there have been similar queries however not the same. I do have a second disk to load which is to fix a software issue with VIA USB host controller however I'm not getting the software installed off the 1st disk right!

Any suggestions welcomed, you've helped me out before.....I have the MS Flight Simulator 2002 to look forward to once I get this licked & so far I've used up 3 hrs of my birthday on this...ARGH

Thanks

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick Problems

if your joystick is usb plug n play then it should have found it. if not usb and plugs into a sound card then you will have to load the driver cd. only other thing could be that the usb cable end is bad or the stick itself. you might try a restart but I doubt that would make a difference on usb. bottom line sticks are cheap. Trying to print to an old printer (Lanier 5235 PL). The printer is connected to the network with Cat 5e cable. We have a peer to peer network with Windows 98, XP, Vista, and 7. Everyone can see each other computer no problem. Because of software issues (as usual) the owner does not want to update anything. When I came into the picture, they have the printer shared on the Windows 98 (since it needs it for the software that it runs.) I can not get the Vista to connect with the 98 using all of the work arounds. I did get the Vista to connect to the printer and use it without the shared connection. I did the simple add a printer on the network and added the drivers and it worked.... I was surprised. I could not get the Windows 7 to do the same. The difference is the Vista computer had the drivers in the "Driver Store" and Windows 7 does not have the same drivers. I tried to download and install driver, but it still does not work.

Any suggestion......

The one thing that I did try on Vista when I did try to share with 98 shared printer, was change the registry setting in the LSA to 1, but I did not do that on the Windows 7 computer. I do not know if that would make a difference, since I could not get Vista to share printers with the 98 computer, I did not bother with changing it in Windows 7 computer. I have spent way to much time looking up a solutions and trying them all.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a MS Sidewinder Pro 2USB joystick which I haven't used in years. Been sitting in a closet. But the new game called H.A.W.X. is coming out and I've been playing the demo.

At first, the joystick refused to be recongized by my system. (stats below) which is an Intel system. Either from the front or rear USB ports. If I plug the joystick into another computer here (AMD system) it is seen and works.

I've tried several times and have located the drivers on the internet. But when I plug in the joystick into either computer - its like the joystick is dead. Nothing shows up. No errors or anything - nada.

At one point, it did show up for a while on my intel computer (after I installed the drivers)... but as of now, nothing. The joystick looks as good as new. Its one of the better things made by MS in design in terms of function and feel. There is NOTHING on the market that compared to these old 2001~2004 joysticks.

From what I can see with google, the USB connection seems to die on these things. So I am guessing I'm going to have to buy a joystick.

I've looked at whats left on the market that I can buy.
Saitek: While customizable, these are flimsy - the trigger button is not comfortable... and breaks easily since I've owned one before I bought the sidewinder. Fairly low cost at about $20~25.

Logitech: Better feel, a bit large. Same design from 2003ish. Problem from reviews is that that they seem to stop functioning, even if stored for months... Read more

So... Before anyone tells me to send it to Logitech for repairs, I should mention that there are none that I know of in my area, and I'm not willing to pay R300 (ZAR) postage to send a big box 600km away to get my wheel 'checked'. Other than that, it's already nearly 3 years old and way out of warranty...

Now, onto the finer details. The force feedback suddenly stopped working one day a few months back. There was no funny smell or smoke or unusual amount of heat, etc.. Anyways, long story short: I suspect the motor is the culprit here, I can't see any damage or burn marks on the IC boards..

A Google search for the details on the side of the motor returns nothing even remotely related to Logitech or electronics in general, so I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction here.

I don't play racing games enough to warrant buying a new wheel, and everything else on the wheel still works, I simply don't have any force feedback and the wheel obviously doesn't center itself anymore (no springs, all done with the motor). I got this joystick installed first time in win98se and checked it in
Gaming Options and found out that buttons 2 and 6 werent working, so I went to Device Manager and removed the USB Human Interface Device and tried to reinstall it, at hardware install dialog I went for "Display List of Devices" and there were 2 versions of USB Human Interface Devices there [4-23-1999] and [some-2002], so I used the latest one and voila , all buttons worked nice. After a couple of days I can make
use on button 2 (secondary fire) in the game, I check up the gaming options control panel and in Side Winder Joystick properties the buttons 2 and 6 didnt work again. I tried to reinstall like 20 times and never got it right again.
Also in Device manager, there under "Sound, video and game controllers" a new control is placed "HID

Hey guys, just wondering what games support good force feedback for a Microsoft Force Feedback 2. I got the controller for $50 several months ago and hardly ever use it. if I had some games that have good force feedback to them, it would get more use.

A:Force Feedback?

I would assume that most racing games made by Microsoft support it, but I don't really know.

A fairly general rule is that racing and flight games have forces, but fps / strategy / role playing do not. - this came from a Logitech site.

Alright, I found some info at the microsoft site...

Compatible games for Force Feedback 2:

COMBAT FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2
DELTA FORCE 3: LAND WARRIOR
F1 2001
FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2002
GRAND PRIX 3: SEASON 2000
MECHWARRIOR IV: VENGEANCE

I really only need to find out if my Logic 3 Rumblepad is meant to be so strong with the Rumble effects and whether or not its possible to lessen the power of it, I find it too strong and it seems to rumble almost constantly when driving, is this normal for this particular pad? I played X3 Reunion with it and to be fair to it it did'nt rumble constantly, but did rumble when turning or pitching.

I have no understanding of the in game options for mostly racing games ie Toca 3 Race Driver and GT Legends, the options say what they are but don't really explain what the effect would be........I installed it exactly as it said in the manual, install driver first then reboot if told to, I wasn't by the way, but did in anycase, and then plugged the pad in and went to the calibration screen to test it, there was a slider in there that was automatically set to 100............but when I tried to turn it down several notches, as soon as I quit and went back, the thing had reset to 100..............please can anyone help as I feel lost as to what to do

Many thanks

Blueglow

To whoever was asking the force feedback chairs- yes we do build them. They are compatible with PC, PS1, PS2, XBOX and game cube. We install tiny motors so that when your controller vibrates, the whole chair does also. We have also included an awesome surround system with TRUE surround and 5 or 6 speaker systems. Not two-speakers like the Battlechair and others out there. We are the only place where you can get the true force feedback. All other places just use a big sub so you can feel the vibration. You can check us out at
www.creativegamingsolutions.com
Mail me with any questions. I will even show you how to build your own if you want.

ps- we also offer a complete line of home theatre style seating with bass shakers installed!

I have a Logitech Wingman Force joystick that is about 8 years old. When I do a normal boot with the joystick on a USB port it's detected but I always get a MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS blue screen of death.

When I do a safe boot with networking the joystick is detected and there is no BSOD.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 9400, Centrino Duo T5600 3.4 GHz, Windows XP 32-bit SP 3, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS, 2 GB RAM.

I haven't used this this joystick for more than a year, but previously it worked flawlessly with this computer.

I have updated my BIOS and my device drivers.

Logitech suggested reinstalling the driver (result: reinstalling LGS 4.30 or 4.60 didn't help) or trying other USB ports (no improvement).

Microsoft's knowledge base didn't have anything relevant.

I searched on this forum but couldn't find a solution.

Any help would be much appreciated. I really like this joystick and would like to continue using it.

Did you ever figure this out? I have the exact controller and Laptop and get the same result in trying to use it. I know I had it working on here before. Probably with XP sp1. Wouldn't be surprised if the Service Packed XP is the culprit

I just put my Sidewinder joystick on my computer again. The built in drivers work great but the system won't allow me to install the profiler included with the original drivers CD.
MS's site was as abyssmal and useless as usual. They had updated versions of the profiler but it said to use it on win98 and no indication was made as to its use with xp.
Anybody have a download site for me?

Mods: If this belongs in Hardware, please move it.

I've looked here http://support.microsoft.com/ph/1016 for help, & looked other places, & Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro game controllers are not supported/compatible(?) with Microsoft Windows XP.
BIG to microsoft!

Has anyone found a workaround to use them in XP?

A:Microsoft SideWinder - no support in XP.

Welcome to TSG!

Really? I have an old Sidewinder 3D pro, that is found and works just fine in XP pro..

I think you may need to chose the driver, but there is a "sidewinder auto detect" feature I think..
It still shows installed for me, so I don't remember off hand how it installed..

I know it's in XP pro though.

Also says my Thrust Master wheel isn't supported by XP. But it too works just fine.

Ok I am having a problem installing my Microsoft Sidewinder

I no longer have the installation CD so contacted microsoft support, they gave me a link to where I can download the correct program

I used the 4 drop down boxes selected the product my operating system and the language and downloaded intellipoint 7.0

Now when ever I try to install the program it gives me a fatal error code 1603

I redownloaded ip 7.0 a couple of times and tried running it from desktop and inside my download folder tried to extract it before installing and have let it unpack itself to try installing

I am unable to remove ip 6.1 from my computer using appwiz.cpl or any other means it gives me an error as well just says setup was interrupted and then another dialog box pops up saying fatal error

Not sure what the heck is going on any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!!

I recently bought an X4 keyboard to replace my G15 but I have found the X4 great until it has a burst of random typing without human input. I was playing CSS and found it was randomly controlling my player, I checked console and it was typing a lot of c, d, e ,f
and w letters. Can anyone help me? It is very frustrating and I believe its down to bad drivers but...

A:Microsoft Sidewinder X4 self typing.

What version of the drivers are you using? The keyboard should work without installing the special drivers as well so you might want to see if those work... at least for test purposes.

I have an older Microsoft Sidewinder joystick (Part No. 91551) that I am trying to use with a new Dell XPS system that does not have a game controller port. I purchased a Belkin adapter to convert the game controller to a USB input.
The joystick is not auto-detected in Windows XP.
Are there any drivers for Windows XP. When I attempt to use the Game Controller input in the Control Panel, there is a Microsoft Sidewinder identified. When I select it, I get an error message "Missing Gameport or Gameport Drivers".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard. The keyboard has a backlight on the keys as it is made for gaming from what I believe.

However everytime I boot my computer the backlight stays on and I have to turn it off by pressing the backlight key 3 times (three times as the keyboard has different dimming settings, bright, less bright, even less bright )

Does anyone know how I can have the backlight turned off forever unless I press the button to activate it?

I assume there must be a setting in the registry telling the keyboard to light up upon boot up?

A:Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard

If the backlight is OFF and you reboot, does it start out back on, or does it stay off?
