I just reinstalled windows xp home. I am running on 640x480, i cannot move that bar up. I'm running on 16 bit medium which is the only option listed under color quality. When i clicked on advanced and went to the monitor tab, the monitor type said "default monitor" and the properties button is grayed out. What should I do?
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
Please provide more info such as display adapter type. It sounds like you have to update your display driver.
Read other 2 answersAfter downloading an update of I-Tunes to my laptop for my I-Pad I suddenly find a huge change in the resolution of my wallpaper pictures. I don't know if there is any connection but I haven't changed anything else. What used to fit comfortably on my 16 inch screen now overwhelms it. I cannot yet find a means of customizing the settings for this. Pictures with anything more than 800K will no longer fit on the screen. Has anyone had to deal with this ?

I just bought a new computer; it came with Windows XP Home already installed. I then installed my copy of Windows XP Pro on top of XP Home, thus erasing XP Home (I think). After XP Pro was installed, the resolution was set at 460 x 600 (or something like that), which on my 17-inch monitor looks awful (HUGE letters). When I go to the Settings window where one can adjust the resolution by moving the slider to another setting, I can't move the slider at all. I've tried clicking on the Advanced button and the Troubleshooting button, but still can't figure out how to change the resolution. I was so frustrated that I've tryied installing Windows XP Pro two more times, thinking that maybe there was some setting I needed to do differently. For monitor, on the Appearance tab, it says "default". I've installed the software for my monitor (Sonic View Optiquest), but it still says Default for monitor. Maybe that is the problem, but how can I change the monitor setting? I went back to my old computer (on which the resolution slide works fine), and see that the monitor is set at Plug and Play. But how do I change the monitor to Plug and Play on my new computer? Thanks so very very much!
This is winXP pro display settings "console" or box. What you get right-clicking anywhere on the desktop & picking "properties". I have a small video card, so the thumbnail shows that. What does your show, exactly? During the winXP pro loading operation there is a point where the install program "asks" whether you want "it" to choose the best settings for display. It gives you 60 seconds to make a choice, and thats when a default arrangement is set up. (I think, basically) My guess is that it checks existing hardware and bases it's decision on several factors. One of those factors may have been "determining what the winXP home had",at the point when you loaded ontop of it. It might automatically disable prior hardware drivers & rely on only basic ones (much like those it relys on in the safe mode, which is also 480X600 regardless of a 1024X768 setting in normal mode)Have you updated any system drivers since reloading/upgrading the OS? That procedure I'm not clear on, whether any problems might result in what amounts to an upgrade. (sorta). I upgrade from win98 when I reload. Thats the CD I have. I always f-disk (wipe the hard drive clean) before I do anything, though. Re-format & partition the HD so to speak. When you say you loaded the pro on top of the home, I'm not quite sure exactly the procedure you followed. The plug and play "feature" in winXP pro can be seen as a service running.... Read more

Welcome to TSF....
Try this boot into safe mode then go to device manager and then open the line for display adapter and delete all of the entries for the display adapter and exit back out normally then reboot the computer and let windows re-install the drivers.
If this does not work then you might have a problem with the display adapter, I would suggest putting in another display adapter card and see if that will work.
I use Windows XP Professional and an Intel® 82810 graphics controller. The driver is current. After installing the XP Service pack, I can no longer adjust my display resolution. I'm stuck with 600x800. Yuck. I'm reluctant to roll back the driver -it may not be compatible with XP(?). I'm out of ideas and hoping for some wisdom.

1) What resolution does the game require?
2) What resolutions can your monitor handle?
Hi crew, my first post here and excited to find such a lively and helpful community!
For a while now I have my laptop (Asus, bought 2010, Windows 7, geforce 325series graphics card) to my TV (sony, 42") and everything worked gloriously. graphics driver is the most up to date version btw.
from one day to the other though, i started to have a series of problems, the major one concerning resolution. i while i could previously select different resolutions for the two desktops when extending (1600x900 on laptop) or duplicating, this is for no apparent reason no longer possible. I may now only choose between 800x600 and 1024x768.
also, it is no longer possible to access the 2nd desktop when extending the 1st - meaning the TV gets signal alright but mouse or windows cannot be dragged along to the TV screen. resolution problem persists when extending screens.
as a result the screen became tiny, but i tinkered with the TV settings and stretched it so that viewing videos was again possible on the entire screen.
since yesterday another problem was added to the pile: resolution appears to constantly readjust itself to, meaning i have black screen every few seconds on the TV with a notice of the new(/old) resolution, making video watching near impossible.
i have no clue what happened, why and what i can do about it. googling the problem has only brought results as to 'how to i connect a tv to laptopt' or 'how do i adjust resolution on 2nd desktop'. those ar... Read more

I am new at this. I have a Toshiba with windows vista home premium. I have tried every way possible to do the simplest thing which is to go to settings and personalize the screen resolution. I can't click okay apply of anything at the bottom of that screen so I can't install service pack2 or agree to adobe contract or okay anything tht has a buttom at the bottom because it is way past the bottom of the screen and I can't get to it. I can't even okay your email newsletter because I cannot reach it. Without having to set a date of when I first got it and lose everything and start over, what can I do?
Do you mean the screen picture is too big for the screen?

First off, I totally believe this is an OS problem based on the troubleshooting I've done, if the mods feel this would be better in another forum please move it. Thank you.
O.K. This is probably going to sound like an easy one, but it's got me stumped. Up until yesterday everything worked fine, until I unplugged my monitor in order to test another machine, when I plugged it back into my main machine I only had 640x480 graphics (this was at the login screen.)
When I logged in and went to video settings the only options I had were 640x480 and 800x600, but couldn't move the slider to 800x600. The only color quality available was 4 bit. I removed the display adaptor from device manager along with the monitor. On reboot everything looked normal (I had all resolution options available in settings), windows detected a vga controller, but not my actual card. I then installed my video card drivers, on reboot I was back to 640x480.
I removed the display adaptor and rebooted, it returned to a normal screen. I loaded older drivers and I went back to 640x480.
I booted to safe mode (with the fx5200 drivers still installed) and everything was normal, device manager says it's using fx5200 drivers. Display settings says it's default monitor on FX 5200 (I'm pretty sure I've always just used default monitor, but I found and loaded the envision drivers and got the same results... Read more

Hello par.
Right click an open area of the desktop then go down the list to Nvidia Control Panel. Left click it. Just in case Click the pic and it gets bigger.
This takes you to Nvidia Change Resolution page. See pic below.
1)Select monitor- your new one should be outlined all ready.
2) Select PC resolution. As you see mine is 1440x900 at 75MHz.
Almost all monitors use setting at 60MHz so yours should be 60 MAYBE 75MHz.
If your resolution is in this list you are done. Close page.
Only go to Step 3 if yours isn't listed at Step 2.
Custom Resolutions as the ones I have shown are totally unstable with MY monitor. So don't go further unless necessary.
3) If your Resolution isn't listed click "Customize"
4) Select a PC res that may work. You can always change or try others.
5) Click OKAY to accept and try.

Hello.
My computer currently has 3 monitors connected to it. 2 through the graphics card (R9 280), 1 through the integrated graphics (AMD HD 3000). Not sure when why or how, but the integrated graphics card can never pick up what type of monitor is connected to it... so it always gives me a bunch of generic 4:3 resolutions...
I've tried uninstalling the drivers and letting them reinstall. I've tried swapping around the cables to see if i could get lucky with one of the other screens, but they all face the same issues. I've tried buying brand new cables across the board because sometimes people say that's the issue. But not success.
The cloest thing i have is apparently a custom resolution setter, but it was created for windows 7 in mind and doesn't seem to work on windows 10 (PowerStrip).
My question is, is there anyway to format the list so i can select the correct resolution? It's a Toshiba TV/Monitor and it seems like every thing else attached to my pc (even 3rd party programs i tried to use to forcably change the resolution) can spot it and hand me back the correct resolution but i can't seem to change it. I get Genertic pnp through the control panel (the only place the monitor shows up in) and even then the correct driver doesn't show, it's the Microsoft Generic driver.
Mobo: MSI AMD 3000 series, cant find exact model.
I've updated my AMD drivers to the latest and so far can only modify the resolution to stock ones that look horrid on the screen.

Read other 0 answersHi there,
Many thanks to the experts here for helping with a similar problem already... I just need to know: what do I run from the Task Manager to get to a place where I can change monitor resolution? (Assuming it's possible ^_^). Does anyone know?
[Yes, you may have noticed -- I need to do things with the Task Manager all the time that ought to be done with the start menu, I'm going to post all about that another time! ^_^ Because it might be a biggie.]
Can you right click your Desktop, choose Properties and under the Settings tab you'd adjust your Resolution. Try bringing up Task Manager click on File>New Task (Run) then type in Desk.cpl and click OK, This should open your Display Properties and click the Settings tab which is where you'd adjust the Resolution.

So, a couple of hours ago I downloaded and installed the game at this link: Download and play free game: Super Mario Bros. 3 | Classic Retro Games and started playing it. When I opened it, the game went straight to full screen, and I couldn't figure out how to downsize it, so after screwing around with it for awhile I just shut the computer down.
When I restarted, my monitor resolution was, I don't know, one? two? It's so distended that I can't, for instance, right click, select properties, and adjust the resolution, because the toollbar takes up most of the screen and the mouse refuses to navigate above it.
Restarting doesn't work, nor does adjusting the resolution in safe mode then restarting. Display in safe mode is normal.
So tell me--what's a girl to do, besides light the whole thing on fire?
Try "Last known good configuration" in the advanced boot options menu if you havnt already. Otherwise maybe run Malwarebytes in safe mode to make sure you dont have a virus of some sort. Just a couple ideas
Read other 1 answersI had this problem for quiet a long time. I get into forums to find answer and solution for this problem, but nothing worked.
I solved this problem personally without installing and downloading codecs, like others said to be the solution. first open your windows media player and right click it. then go to tools, click options and go to DVD. click advanced this will directly go to codecs, at the right side theres a dvd decoding icon, if it has a check mark, remove it. and there you go the problem is solved for me. i dont know if it will solved yours.
because i am just new with this my forum is not so clean.
Thanks, but there are various solutions for WMP not being able to play DVD-videos. For starters, it depends on which version of Windows you have, as well as (to a lesser extent) the version of WMP being used.
For example, the version of WMP that ships with XP & Vista cannot play DVD-video until you install a third-party DVD player software. WMP then uses that third-party's software decoder by default.
The version of WMP that ships with Windows 7 has no such limitations. It can play DVD-video natively.
I have both an LCD screen and a projector on my PC, I switch to the projector for watching TV (I also use the PC as a PVR). My previous LCD was 1280x1024 and my projector is 1280x720 so with the pixel width being the same the mouse went at the same speed on both screens.
I now have a 1920x1080 LCD and because of the huge resolution difference the mouse appears to run at half speed when I'm on the LCD screen.
Is there a program that adjusts the mouse speed based on screen resolution so that my mouse appears to run at the same speed on both screens? It's annoying having to move the mouse twice as much when I'm on the LCD.
Thank you
Does the mouse speed remain normal on the projector?
To my knowledge there isn't any software that will adjust the mouse speed.
This is probably a silly question but I have just got a new laptop. While playing games on it, I was frustrated by the black borders of the screen on both sides. I was able to make the computer automatically adjust the resolution to the game that I'm playing so that the black space was filled. But today it has stopped doing that.
I've forgotten how to put it back and I've looked for how to turn this option on again but I can't figure it out.
Can anyone tell me how?
I do believe what you have to do is go into the game settings and set the resolution to match what your screen supports.

Just got a brand new Gateway LCD GATEWAY and it was fine for the first 2 days until I played a 3D game, then it asked me would I like to Enable the Resolution reminder and I chose yes, and now I am UNABLE to disable it...because when I go to the Resolution Reminder menu on my screen the SELECT button isnt there, so I cant select disable, the checkmark constantly stays on ENABLE..here is a screenshot from the gateway website RESOLUTION REMINDER there you can see that the SELECT button which should be between BACK and UP clearly isnt there, so its not as if my screen is faulty, cuz this is a screenshot directly from their website which must mean all these LCDs come like this. so now any resolution I choose gets AUTO PROCESSED to fullscreen mode, meaning it gets stretched and heightened to fit my whole screen, even if I choose the lowest setting available 800x600 it stretches all across my whole screen.. which as u can imagine looks very very VERY ugly!!! One thing I would like to point out that might be an issue is that I am using Analog plugs, I had to use a converter from my XFX 6600GT cuz the card only has two DVI outputs, so I used to provided converter to switch it to analog and plug it into my screen, cuz I read sumwhere that depending on what plugs u have going from your vid card to your screen the resolutions are different..
any help?? cuz I sure couldnt get any from the numerous Gateway support agents I spoke too..

First off, figure out whether or not your laptop has an ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) which will automatically adjust the brightness (if all goes well). Usually it won't override a manual setting, but it's kind of up to the developer which one takes precedence. As for the keys not working, you probably removed (or didn't install after a Windows reinstall) the helper software that controls these functions.

My Windows Vista isn't letting me adjust my power settings.
Here is what the problem:
1. I click the battery icon in the bottom right of the start bar. Then I click "More Power Options"
2. On the left panel of Power Options window, I click "Choose when to turn off the display"
My computer tells me "Your power plan information isn't available" with a red X next to it.
The same thing happens when I try to adjust any other power setting as well.
3. I click on the "Why can't Windows retrieve this information?" and it says stuff about my system administrator making changes, and that doesn't apply to me. I am the only user of the computer and my account is the administrator. I've never tinkered with any of these files to my memory.
It also says "Some of your power management settings, or the registry keys that are associated with those settings, have been deleted or corrupted. For more information, contact your system administrator." But I am the only administrator of this computer and the nice people at Microsoft never instructed me about this when I bought my computer.
I've done a SFC scan and it said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I recently purchased G50-45 series 80e300gyin notebook with AMD A8 processor and dos based. Installed windows 8 and updated to windows 8.1. Also installed (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) drivers but still I am unable to adjust the screen brightness, by default it is at full. Please help me to resolve this issue.
hi nikunjpadhiar,
Welcome to the Forums.
When you installed the (Beema) AMD Driver, did you remove any previous traces of the AMD Display driver?
If not, can you try the following:
1. Navigate to the Control Panel (Icon Views) > Programs and Features and uninstall anything that relates to AMD Display Driver / AMD Control Center.and reboot. When finished, navigate to the Device Manager > Display Adapters and the driver should show a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
2. Install the (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and reboot. When done, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter from the Device Manager should now change to an AMD Radeon Display and check if you can now adjust the brgithness.
In addition, check this post by marcus34 as he was able to resolve the issue.

I ordered an HP EliteOne 800 G2 23" All-in-One PC with a Recline Stand. All instructions I have seen so far are inconsistent with the stand I received. My stand has a lollipop-shaped key in the base that apparently needs to be removed so that the stand can be adjusted. However I am unable to remove the key with normal exertion and am afraid to apply more force until I am sure of that I am doing. The key seems to be slightly crooked so I am wondering if perhaps it was damaged in packing or shipping. If anyone could help with any information about the Recline Stand, I would appreciate if very much. So far I have found very little information, and nothing about the key, either in the box on on-line. Thank you,Ken Traynham

What happens when you try to adjust the brightness? Is there no setting? Setting grayed out? Or you change the setting but nothing happens?
If it changes for an instant, then reverts to what it was, adaptive brightness may be enabled.

Which screen capture program are you using? I would try another program, this is the first time I've heard of a screen capture program asking that kind of fix.
And as for Hardware Acceleration, I know of a lot of Laptops or Notebooks do not have this feature, mine is one and my wife's laptop being the other, the Laptops are 2 and 3 years old respectively.
Good luck in resolving your problem

I upgraded my LENOVO G580 laptop from 8.1 to windows 10. after installation the screen brightness increased tremendously and the tools to reduce it do not work. can anybody help ?
Read other answersUntil now everything was working perfect. I did a driver update today, which includes the latest display driver, and now I am unable to adjust the brightness. I tried to uninstalled the display and monitor driver but nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. It looks like it was coming with the latest driver update from today. Thanks in advance
Read other answersIn the past few days my laptop has been behaving oddly. At first it would not allow me to adjust the brightness, neither with the function keys nor the slider. This would happen after it awakened from sleep.
It also does not like to restart now. It hangs at the "Restarting" screen until I force it to turn off by holding the power button.
In, addition, the keyboard stopped functioning. This has only happened once, though.
I ran system file check from the command line. It found corrupted files, but was unable to fix them. I ran it again in "Safe Mode" and got the same results.
I tried rolling back the display adapter. This did not solve the problem either.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Is your OS current? Have you downloaded and installed the latest drivers for all of your connected and installed devices?
Do you have the OS installation disk? Can you boot from that and run the startup repair utility?

Read other answersI've noticed, today, that I'm suddenly unable to adjust my screen brightness. I have read half a dozen threads reporting the same problem; I tried all the solutions therein (from updating the driver and reverting to the most basic one to manually changing power configurations) and nothing worked. Unlike the vast majority of users who had this problem, this hasn't happened following an update to windows 8.1 (which I did several months ago -- and the adjust was working fine after that).
This might give you a hint:
* As I try to adjust it using the fn key (as I had always done previously), brightness goes up or down just one level -- and that just 'cosmetically', as in fact nothing changes. The indicator gets stuck approximately in the middle of the bar, unable to reach the extremes.
* There is more: on power management, I chose the lowest possible level of brightness when working on battery, just to see what would happen. I then disconnected my laptop from main power, and... the brightness indicator did go down to the lowest level, YET brightness remained unaltered in fact.
Anyone, please??
try turning off Adaptive Display in advanced settings under power management

Just today, my laptop won't let me adjust the brightness, and has completely removed the option to. I am currently running on Windows 10 (64-bit) and again, just today out of nowhere does not let me adjust the brightness. The laptop battery is completely dead (it doesn't work without being plugged in) but this issue has never affected anything. I would really appreciate some help with this ASAP as the screen is damaged enough already. Thanks UPDATE: The laptop has now completely gotten rid of the option to sleep.
