Preferred Solution: Microsoft asked again to install update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Oops - I just realized this thread is in the Vista forum. Apologies - I found the thread by searching like a good little member, but didn't realize the original was posted in what I assume is the wrong forum. Can someone move this thread to XP?

Thanks,

In May last year I had Win 7 installed by my local expert on my 5 year old Dell laptop which replaced Vista which I hated. It caused several glitches but has been working fine ever since. In April this year I had a clean uninstall done because of some new trouble (not related to the Win 7 installation I was told). Again, this only gave me a few glitches before everything settled down. However, a few days ago I received an onscreen message telling me I had to type in the Win7 verification key or I wouldn't be able to use Windows. It gave me 3 days in which to do this. I have never been asked for this before and can't understand why I received it now. My 'man' couldn't explain it either.

Since then I've run a complete scan with MSE which found nothing wrong.

I have FF and Incredimail and MalwareBytes and all appear to be running properly.

Does anyone here have any answers?

Hello,

Recently Microsoft has been trying to update my software with a security update

{Security Update for Microsoft Office XP (KB921596)}

Unfortunately something is going wrong and I am told that Microsoft was unable to update the security update.

At the moment when I switch off my PC, the turn off button is showing the multicoloured shield next to it (meaning it will update before switching off)

I think it is trying to update the same security update as above.

The situation has been like this for maybe a fortnight now.

Please could you help me to sort the situation out.

Many thanks

PS, My security software (Kaspersky Internet Security 2009) has been flashing up a message about Key logging… (what ever that is) whenever I click on & open up my media playing program InterVideo WinDVD 5….. Could this have anything to do with the aforementioned Microsoft Security update ?

You Asked for It: Microsoft Is Bringing Tabs All Over Windows 10

Microsoft announced a new feature coming to Windows 10 that would enable tabs in UWP apps and eventually in Win32 programs in an attempt to boost productivity and allow users to organize work with little effort.

The new feature is called ?Sets? and the idea it?s based on is as simple as it could be: by bringing tabs in apps, users would never have to close or minimize a specific app only to search the web for information or launch another app. This is an approach similar to the tabs in browsers, which enable browsing the web with just a single window of the program running on the screen.

Microsoft Sets will initially be available in the company?s own universal apps, and Microsoft isn?t hiding the fact that its goal is to bring the same feature on all devices, including smartphones.

It goes without saying that enabling this feature on Android and iOS is more difficult than on its desktop operating system, but the company wants to be the first to do this with its apps like Office and Microsoft Edge and thus become a pioneer before more devs go for it. Sync features would also be available, so sets could support roaming from a PC to a mobile device.
Tabs, tabs everywhere
Furthermore, Microsoft also wants to enable this feature in Win32 software, and File Explorer, Notepad, and Photoshop are on the list of titles that should be getting it in early 2018. Again, this will hit some roadblocks, especiall... Read more

This new feature is actually a really good idea as far as I am concerned, I am wondering why I haven't seen anyone complain about it not being present before already yet!

Shame I don't use MS Office because its a big target for exploitation and is usually affected quite a lot in a way similar to how badly Java and Flash was always attacked, but at-least they are coming up with bright ideas for user ease-of-us now. must be an awfully lot easier than switching window tabs 24/7 on the task bar

I have automatic update checked because the latest version of Norton Requires it. The problem I am having is that Microsoft.net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 won't install.
Because the service pack won't install it keeps popping up to install.

I checked on microsoft's website and they said :

SYMPTOMS
When you install Microsoft .NET Framework service packs on computers that have the .NET Framework 1.0 or the .NET Framework 1.1 installed, you receive one of the following error messages:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3 (KB867461) cannot be installed because you have one or more hot fixes installed. Remove them and try again
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB867460) cannot be installed because you have one or more hot fixes installed. Remove them and try again
The installation is not completed.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs if you install security update MS05-004 before you try to install the .NET Framework service pack. Security update MS05-004 was released after the service pack but was applied to the computer before the related service pack. Hi,

https://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/win-update-and-msse-wont-update-1064130.html

I'm sure I was the last person to use and the dates of win updates match then. I also ran ESET online before cleaning out my files 2 years ago (but haven't since I set this up yesterday).

Now both win 7 and MSSE won't update and I even uninstalled and reinstalled MSSE.

I thought it may be hardware as it's very old, refurbished from a computer charity (however, it turned out the charity was illegal).

So, am following the advice of spunk.funk and posting here. I should have my usual computer back in a couple weeks, but this is the only alternative.

Also, I plugged in one of my thumb drives to get my book marks, but nothing else - do you think if the computer is infected it infected my thumb drive?

Also, when they wouldn't update I updated some of the very few programs on this computer like Malwarebytes, Sandboxie, Firefox, and SpywareBlaster and no problem.

Thank you very much.

Running Win 8.1 on a Lenovo U530 (factory specs).
I can't update the microsoft.net framework to 4.5.2 or 4.6.1.
I've tried a clean boot, the microsoft.net framework repair tool and windows update repair tool. The update repair tool fixed 3 issues and after doing so showed that there was no framework update for my pc. As soon as i began to manually download it however,
i then got a popup saying there were updates (surprise surprise, it was .net framework finally coming to its senses). And of course it didn't mean squat, the update still fails.
On further attempts of various methods I did notice that the .net framework version 4.5.2 fails to install, while the 4.6.1 will "rollback" its installation, although this doesn't seem to have any effects ill or otherwise.

I dont usually receive problems from microsoft updates, but this one is getting on my nerves a bit. See, I am at a college in california, and there is this program called "Cisco Clean Access" which is like a toll booth to use the internet here. You have a student ID and a password.

for some reason, the campus administrators changed Cisco Clean Access so that it requires everyone to update their computers, mainly PC people. I just got my desktop up and running after installing 2 new GPU's and a PSU, and am now updating it. I have the updates, but one of them is giving me some lip! here....

"Updates were unable to be successfully installed.

The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB929969)"

I have it downloaded, and click to install it, but it just wont budge. I tried express install, but to no avail. I tried custom install, again, to no avail. If anyone is familiar with this issue or wants to give me advice, I would greatly appreciate that.

Thanks!

Hey. Out of all of my computer experience i have never heard of or seen this problem.

I downloaded windows upgrade advisor on my laptop and ran it. It said that I was able to run windows 7. So i installed it using usb because my laptop only has a cd drive, not a dvd drive. After installing it and it prompted me that it was going to restart and it did but when it came on again, it skipped all of the setup process such as entering username, computer name, password, my preferences for updates, and product key. it went straight to a screen asking me for a username and password......... i never created one so it's kind of difficult to get past that screen. haha.

i never altered installation files or anything I just used diskpart to set up the usb drive and then just transfered the files diectly from the windows dvd to the usb using another computer. =\

Any help would be greatly appreciated. =P

Thanks in advance!
Jon

A:Clean Install never asked me for username/pass/product key etc..

Thats not a regular win7 disk. Its a modded one, probably with an answer file (autounattend.xml) that did all that work for you. Even in 3rd party tools like RT7lite theres an unattend option that automates steps like user creation, product key and regional settings.

I have two Office 2007 updates already downloaded in Windows XP that constantly fail to install. The updates are both "Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System" KB969613 and KB973704.

I have followed steps to delete downloaded update files as follows:
1) Stop Automatic Updates service (services.msc)
2) Browse to %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete all files (incl. hidden)

Unfortunately, even after I do that, these updates appear to still be downloaded and waiting to be installed. Even if I tell Update "Don't show me these updates again" and then restore those updates, they are STILL already downloaded. The error I get is simply "The following updates were not installed."

What directory are Office updates downloaded to? I'm tired of the yellow shield constantly telling me that updates are ready!

Thanks in advance.

You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010...lbar-update.ars As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does.

Microsoft/Windows Update works when you let it "automatically" install updates - i.e. Click on "Turn Off".

It fails when I try to do it manually.

NOTE: It is only the install that fails - "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". I have no problem selecting and downloading updates.

I have tried a number of ideas posted here and elsewhere. But, so far, nothing has resolved the issue. This is not a result of a repair, serivice pack update, etc. I tried Dial-a-fix also, but it did not work either.

Run ALL these. If that doesn't fix it, hit the tool button and reinstall BITS.

Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may have to contact the program manufacturer for any updates or uninstall and re-install the program.

Your best option may be to open device manager (with device connected) and uninstall any related device, making sure the 'Delete driver software for this device' is checked.Once you have done this, unplug your device, uninstall WMDC 6.1 and reboot your machine. Then follow the instruction on my first reply, this should sort it for you.If anyone is helpfull, please click the 'Vote as helpfull' icon.

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

Greetings fellow Windows enthusiasts,

I was asked to update our Windows 2008 R2 server from IE 10 to IE11, and it will not install properly.  I have looked up several solutions to this issue, so far nothing has worked.

I disabled McAfee HBSS in safe mode, restarted the PC and tried to run Windows Update managed by a WSUS server.  The update gets approved and pushed out to the 2008 R2 server.  It downloads IE11, tries to install, then fails/errors-out at the last
second.   I have tried this a few times, rebooted and either get error code 9C47 or 9C49.

Some of the fixes I have tried:

I turned of internet connectivity and the anti-virus, that did not workI tried the Windows Update repair tool, that did not work  I tried the Windows System Readiness tool, that did not work   I tried to scan the system files for errors with sfc /scannow
and that did not work  I tried installing the other updates first, restarting and it still fails I removed the server from WSUS and re-added it and it will not update   I tried the stand-alone IE11 installer, and it fails at the very last step and then gives me an error with a link to troubleshoot IE installations   I have uninstalled IE10, and now am totally stuck with the absolutely horrible experience of IE9 SURT returns no errorsSFC returns no errors
