I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm a first time poster here as I'm a new user of Win7, so please excuse my ignorance if I am being a moron, but I have a strange problem!!

For the past week or so, ALL of my files on desktop and in every folder have turned translucent. When I checked properties, the hidden attribute has been set. However this includes my special Libraries icons (Pictures, Music etc).

Fair enough, I could simply go and manually unset the hidden property via DOS or Properties on the root C: folder, but this will be time consuming on a 640GB hard drive and it still won't answer why it happened in the first place.

My first step was to perform an Antivirus scan which found nothing, then a malware scan which only picked up an infestation of 31 Relevant Knowledge files/registry entries. It tells me these are all now all removed but my icons are still "hidden".

I have just done a test run to unset H on my C:\users\username folder (which required administrator privaleges to run) and it seems to have done the trick on folder and file icons, but my special Libraries icons are still translucent, and when I right click I don't get the usual properties dialog to unset the hidden attribute.

After days of googling, I can't find anyone with a similar story for an explanation of why this may have happened, if it will happen again, if there are any other underlying issues/threats that are not obvious to me, or if I'm just being a numpty.

In addition to this, around the sa... Read more

I have some folder which, when i right click on them and change the attributes to not 'read only', and it follows by asking do you want all folders and subfolder included in this change, and I indicate yes. It then goes through the process of changing all the file attributes. When I again right click on the folder, it indicates that there are still read only files in the folder.

What's up with that? And, How do I fix it?

I was clicking around in my C drive because I was trying to find a folder that was hidden. I right clicked, click properties, selected the "hidden" folder attribute to the administrator folder, and clicked apply to all folders, subfolders, etc. I realized this was not the right thing because it just hid all the folders inside, so I undid it.

Afterwards, it kicked me off of skype and when I tried to log on again, it said my disk was full when it is obviously not and gave me the "disk i/o error"

In addition, I clicked firefox and it gave me a dialog box that said "Could not initialize the browser security component, etc etc and gave me another warning about my disk being full.

What did I do? Obviously my disk is not full but these two programs think it is full and is giving me error messages. Has this happened to anyone else before?

A search for how to hide a folder (and subfolders and content) shows 3d party software, or using the hidden attribute in Windows itself. Putting aside 3d party stuff for now what I came upon was this method:
From cmd. Type ?CD C:abcd? (replace ?abcd? with the name of the folder you want to hide.)2. Now type ?attrib file +s +h? and replace ?file? with the name of the actual file name you would like to hide.

I tried this method which seemed ideal to me and nothing happened at all I could still see my folder. I assumed using ?attrib file +s +h" without the quotes but with spaces shown

Here's what's important: what happens to the hidden folder when i delete a visible folder above it in the folder tree? Will the hidden folder be backed up? Will it be scanned by my AV program? Can the files in the folder be recovered in an emergency such as a system crash?

Also: The hidden file attribute can not be used everything must be visible and accessible except for the hidden folder.
And here's something which I would like but which may not be possible. The folder in question (with other folders within it) is huge about 700GB. Assuming that on the drive where this 700GB folder sits are other folders totaling 50GB. In a 1TB drive this means there is now about 250GB free space. Would it be possible, once hidden, for the drive to show it actually has 950GB free space. A hidden folder will be treated like any other ordinary folder and will be deleted similarly. However, attempting to delete a System flagged file/folder will result in Explorer prompting confirmation before deletion of that file/folder.

Usually that is the case. It depends on what backup software you use. I know SyncToy does backup hidden/system files and folders.

If you can recover ordinary, non-hidden files/folders you sure can recover hidden/system files and folders.
Think of file attributes as indicators that Explorer uses to modify how it shows or treats items.

Is Windows 7.0 sometimes unable to display a folder that has attribute="hidden"?

A tool associated with Visual Build Pro 8.7 called "Enhanced Zip" seems to be stripping away the "hidden" attribute of an attribute="hidden" folder, after the folder has been added to a zip file.

We are uncertain if "Enhanced Zip" is bugged, and is "un-hiding" folders with attribute="hidden", or if the zipped folder retains attribute="hidden" but Windows 7.0 mistakenly displays it as "Non-Hidden", when you look at the folder's Properties.

Hi catstevecam and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes you can display the file extension. In explorer select Organize->Folder and search options. On the view tab uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
If you right click on an empty area in a folder you can chose sort and grouping options. Type is one of these.

You can change the attributes of some file types (Music & Videos) in the properties details tab.

How would one go about checking. I can gather a list of the file names in the directory. I assume that it would be the command

Several months ago I got a new laptop with Win 7 Pro SP1 64bit. I have done numerous backups on this machine but I've noticed that the file attribute 'archive bit' (a) is not being reset as it was on Win XP. (NOTE: backups were full backups not incremental or differential.)

Does Win 7 treat file attribute bits differently than XP?

I also have noticed that 7 displays various attribute bits that were not used in XP; where is there a description of all attribute bits?

A:File Attribute 'Archive' Bits not being reset

Are you on a homegroup by any chance?

I've read some MS answers that flat out say that the archive bit is no longer available in windows 7 (but I think they mean reliably usable rather than not available in the strict sense). To others saying that the homegroup networking is using it for it's own purposes (probably for it's own built in backup) and it interferes with other people/programs using it.

Personally I have not looked into it though.

I believe that the base "dos" attributes are the same as always though: Read Only, Archive, Hidden and System. Of course NTFS itself has (and has always had) a much more extensive access control system in place for all folders and files...

My families vista system got infected with malware(Antimalware doctor) and (as the computer had already been restarted twice by this point anyway) I elected to attempt to remove the offending files from safe mode. I deleted the registry keys first with relative success but had more trouble hunting down the offending files. In the end I found the filepath in a shortcut but found that the folders in question were hidden. After making the hidden files visible folder by folder for I while I decided to accelerate the process and told it to make all hidden files visible. As this was the case with my own computer, I didn't anticipate any problems but after a 3 min long "attribute change" suddenly all the files in the relevant users account had disappeared, rather than being joined by a few previously hidden folders.(In fact, aside from a previously open window, the account as a whole had disappeared). According to the windows accounts page, the account in question is still there and using a sizable chunk of hard disk space, but I can find no other evidence of it or the files.

My only two theories right now are :
1. Somehow I accidentally made all of the contents of the account be listed as hidden files - I consider this one very unlikely, as one vista dialogue(which I have used many times before) would probably not be capable of that effect.

2. Some self-defense action of the malware. The malware has already prevented use of the internet or the running of any progra... Read more

When i create a new folder it automatically sets the read only attribute, if i try and turn it off it just turns back on again.

I have tried using command prompt to disable it as well as playing with the security settings and account permissions.

does any one have any ideas?

A:File and Folder Read only attribute wont disable

1. First question, why are you trying to do it?

2. look here:
Unable to remove Read-Only attribute from folder
You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

To view or to remove the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Vista or Windows 7
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER..
To view the syntax for the Attrib command, type attrib /? at the command prompt.
To remove the Read-only attribute and to set the System attribute, use the following command:
attrib -r +s drive:\<path>\<foldername>
For example, to remove the Read-only attribute and to set the System attribute for the C:\Test folder, use the following command:
attrib -r +s c:\test
Be aware that some programs may not operate correctly with folders for which the System attribute and the Read-only attribute are set. Therefore, use the following command to remove these attributes:
attrib -r -s drive:\<path>\<foldername>
For example, to remove both the Read-only and the System attributes from the C:\Test folder, use the following command:
attrib -r -s c:\test
If the Run command is not listed on the Start menu, do the following:
Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Run..

note: Open cmd with run as administrator

I was checking Microsoft Office Word Starter 2010 and I realized that one of the files had hidden text in it. From Options - Display, I chose show hidden text and it was "Top of Form" at the top of the page. But I got curious about this and made some search and I realized that you can hide text in a txt file with a stream method and also there can be hidden streams in processes also.

How can I find out if a doc(x) file has no streams in it. I mean the hidden text may be seen by the method of Options - Display; but can someone hide something with a password in a doc(x) file? If yes, how can I find this out?

How can someone create a hidden text protected with a password in a txt or doc(x) or any other file? How can it be seen? How can it be removed?

How can someone hide anything in a process? How can it be seen? How can it be removed?

Thank you.

A:How to see hidden text or hidden streams in a doc(x) file in Starter

not familiar with the txt embed you are talking about.
Dropping foreign script into a process is a pretty basic VB method though I suppose you could call it injection even though that's only half accurate.
In fact almost the entire .net framework and your extended .dll library are there for that specific purpose.
common pieces of code and functions are supported by the various link libraries and allow programers shortcuts, instead of writing a bit of code themselves they just call on the injection of code from the 'database' windows has in place already.
Another place this happens is in copy protection, where a executable is written then the copy protection is added in using a tool for the purpose.

Hi guys, I have a couple of days ago had some weird things start happening on my computer and I fear I have a virus / malware / a trojan! I have done a complete scan with SuperAntiSpyware, and it has found nothing. Any help I can get to remove this virus would be greatly appreciated!

I now can't see any of my hidden files / folders (when I go into folder options and click the show hidden files and folders radio button, when I hit apply, it reverts back to don't show hidden files and folders), the icons of my USB drives have been changed to folder icons, rather than the normal USB icon, and I now get a DNS error (internet explorer cannot display the web page), or certain websites - notedly microsoft and anti-virus related websites. I am now 99% sure I have a virus, because when I transferred some completely different files via the same USB to my other pc (also windows xp), it has now started to show the same symptoms.

I have done a complete scan with SuperAntiSpyware, and it has found nothing. Any help I can get to remove this virus would be greatly appreciated!

My DDS log is as follows:

I've got Cloner II for copying DVD movies and it works great, except it won't minimize when running. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Cloner II Problem

I've been told when burning a DVD do not multi-task or do other things on your computer while it's burning a DVD. A lot of my copies had errors because of this. Don't minimize or do other things while burning a DVD. It takes all the resources on your computer to burn video and doing other things at the same time will cause errors in the burn.

I purchased the package this morning from Herman Street ; it is supposed to include conversion to AVI, WMV, etc when you copy your DVD's. It is supposed to be bundled into the package I bought. However, there appears to be separate components to purchase to do this. Has anyone used this software? And have you successfully used all the features advertised? See this link for features. I need a lot of help with different options, and of course they are unresponsive.

Not sure if this is the right forum, please let me know if I should put this in a different one.

Thanks greatly...

Features: Bundled with DVD Cloner 5 is the ability to convert your DVDs to multiple formats using DVD to AVI, DVD to MPEG and DVD to SVCD. Typically this would require expensive additional software, but with version 5 it's already included.

This software also has the ability to copy to your hard drive, which is a useful, energy saving feature for laptops.

Herman Street Site is the creator..I am unable to post links until I hit a 5 post count. :

Hi there fellas.

I have had my comp for about 3-4 years. I have never had any problems but this week when I turned it on the screen remained black and said "no signal". Obviously there is no output from the graphics card and I have tried a second moniter which also failed. Im almost certain that this is a hardware problem.

When the PC boots up, the LED's on the flash card drives and floppy drive are permenently on. However, when the PC was working these lights would flash briefly and then go off while the boot sequence continued.

I have opened the case and turned the power on. The CPU fan and PSU fan are both spinning but the fan on the graphics card is not. The two DVD drives both work but there is still nothing on the screen.
Im not sure if the hard-drives have power because they are quite hidden.

Im am unsure of how to proceed. I thought I would seek some advice before physically taking it to a specialist.

My PC:

Intel Pentium 4 HT Processor 550 3.4 Ghz
Motherboard - MS 7046
Seagate ST3200822AS 200GB SATA - HD
Seagate ST3200822AS 200GB SATA - HD

ATi Radeon X600Pro 256Mb PCI Express
Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio (Azalia)
Artec DHM-G48 16X DVD-ROM
Pioneer DVR-108DB DVDRW

Thanks for spending the time to read this.
Any advice whatsoever would be great.

Hi, recently my 930 (funny enough, just after the warranty period was over). my Yoga starts to change randomly the screen temperture. This happens when I cover the camera lense, just sit in front of it, change apps, connect something to USB etc. When I select a color profile in the monitor setting it immedately switches back to the bright, high temperature profile. After some minutes it flickers and goes back to something that resembles a lot night mode. I deactivated night mode, automatic brigthness, power saving etc. but it still is getting worse. I am using the latest Win10 release. Is there any solution to the extremely annoying thing? It does not happen on external monitors.

Hey guys/gals.
What is the closest Windows program to Carbon Copy Cloner? http://www.bombich.com/
It is used to create scheduled bootable backups of your Windows hard-drive.
Thanks in advance.

A:Equivalent to Carbon Copy Cloner?

Windows 8 has the ability to backup files on a schedule and create an entire image of your hdd. As the
link below states, for some reason known only to Microsoft, it is 'hidden'. But it is actually the same backup
features offered in Windows 7....a smaller version of Acronis.

I removed the 'file_recovery' virus and got everything else back to normal using:

which included using unhide.exe, but now I think my system files are all showing, even though I have checked 'hide system files' and 'do not show hidden files'.

If I go to a place where I think there are supposed to be system files that are supposed to be hidden (like windows/system32) and show the 'attributes' column, they say 'A' (archive) is the only attribute.

Shouldn't they say 'S' (system) and 'H' (hidden)? If so, is there a way to put the 'system' and 'hidden' attributes back on the appropriate files (without doing it manually one by one because that would take forever and I wouldn't know which ones to do)?

I am running Windows Vista.

Thanks! unhide.exe really saved me!

Hello commited helpers, the title of thread basicly says the problems i've got I first went to the xp support forums and posted about suspicious .exe files which you can look at here. I ran a online scanner it during the scan it seemed as if the cloner was deleted at the file itself simply dissapeared, but i have deleted it before and it has come back so only time will tell.

Now my MAIN problem is not being able to update windows, due to getting alot of viruses it seems my "automatic updates" service was disabled, when i try to enable it my computer suffers extreme lag and when i check my task manager it tells me one of my "svchost" proccesses is using 100% of my cpu, i looked a bit on this forum and it seems someone else had the same problem as me but since svchost covers so many different things i thought it would be appropriate to post a new thread. So here are the results from my dss scan and the extra.txt has been attached.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Go to My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View>"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply>OK.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new H... Read more

I recently discovered that Flash Player keeps cookie-like data for all flash-enabled sites I have visited. I deleted these files but also wanted to wipe them completely from the hard drive.I moved all the files from the Recycle Bin to a folder I created named 'Shred' in preparation for zapping them with Sure Delete, a file wiping utility. However, all the files are set as 'Read Only' so I unchecked the 'Read Only' attribute from the Properties menu for 'this folder and all subfolders and files'. However, when I right click on the folder and click Properties for verification, I find once again that the folder is set to 'Read Only' (along with all the subfolders) and therefore can't be wiped. Does anyone know why this folder refuses to allow the Read Only option to be unselected, i.e., NOT Read Only so that these files can be wiped?

Is there a way to create rules for Microsoft mail version 17.6965.41051.0 ? I was successful in setting up Microsoft mail and it downloaded all of my emails off the web service I use (wowway) but I can't figure out how to delete the emails off of the server after they are downloaded. Unless I go into the web service and delete them manually. If I just delete them in Ms mail they just re appear after I open Ms mail the next time. I have tried everything. Deleted thousands of email over and over again. If I can't figure it out I will just have to not use Ms mail. And only my web service.

Windows 7 will delete "Read-Only" files without providing any warning (unlike XP).
Windows Media Player 12 will overwrite files which have the "Read-Only" attribute set.

Does anyone know how to make Windows 7 (& WMP) obey the "Read-Only" attribute on files?

A:"Read-Only" File Attribute

Hi lehnerus2000,

1) Read-only files can't be modified, but they can be copied, moved, renamed, or deleted. You can make a secure private folder which is inaccessible and undeletable. There are detailed instructions on Make Folder Inaccessible and Undeletable.

2)For WMP, go through the following page, theres a nice discussion about stopping WMP from overwriting jpgs.
