Explorer opens multiple windows when I double click a drive

Q: Explorer opens multiple windows when I double click a drive

I have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.

I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.

This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this? I would like no new windows at all to open up.

Preferred Solution: Explorer opens multiple windows when I double click a drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

(XPSP2) When I double click on a folder in the Windows Explorer right-hand pane, it opens a search box instead of simply exploring the folder. Can anyone advise me how to turn it back to the normal behaviour?

This situation arose after I did some registry tidying to get rid of a much more irritating problem. So it won't surprise me if there is some registry key I still need to change.

This occurs intermittently on my Win7 Enterprise installation. Double-clicking on a folder in Explorer opens the properties dialog for the folder, as if I'd right-clicked and then selected properties. Single-clicking works fine and only Explorer acts strangely. The mouse is a vanilla Logitech RX1000. Putting the computer to sleep then waking it again eliminates the problem (until it happens again, about once or twice a day) or it may sort itself out after 10 or 20 minutes. It's rather annoying.James

First, I would like to confirm when the issue began to occur. Have any new program or hardware installed on the computer?
You can refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
1. Please replace another mouse, such as PS/2 mouse or USB mouse. Does the issue when using other mouse?
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode and double click a folder for test. If the issue persists, please let me know. Otherwise, let's restart the computer in Normal Mode and perform a Clean Boot.

Always in the past, with every flavor of Windows, when I double clicked on a filename in Windows Explorer, it opened it in the default app or one chosen by me via file association. Now, I get a Save As window. I now have to right click and select Open from the menu to open.

Something changed, and I did not do it, unless by unknown accident. How do I get back to the open on double click functionality?

A:In Win Explorer, double click now opens SAVE AS dialog

Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One) might be all you need; accept defaults, maybe add #s 26 & 27. Allow it to make both system restore point & registry backup just before doing repairs.

Whenever I double click on a folder in windows explorer I get a separate window opening. It started when I ran the last update. When I double click a drive or folder, the Properties dialog opens instead of the normal Open behavior. If I right click on a drive or folder, the default (hilited) action is "Move or Rename Audio Files". How do I restore normal behavior. A:Double click a drive or folder opens the Properties dialog instead of the normal Open behavior

Thank you for posting.
If the issue did not occur previously, please just try System Restore first.
I suspect this issue may be also related to the mouse settings. Please go to ?Control Panel\Hardware and Sound? and click ?Mouse? and check your mouse settings; please ensure that the left button is set to ?Click? and right button is ?Right-click?.
You may also click the Restore Defaults to reset the mouse settings.
If you use some other application to manage the mouse, please also check the settings or just remove it.
Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

If I try to right click and open any of these it brings it up in Ulead photo explorer.

Problem: A double-click on a folder in Windows Explorer FOLDER VIEW opens a new window.

I have scoured hundreds of forum postings on this very problem with 99% of proposed solutions not working for the poster. My sense of this is that the solutions offered focus on SHELL registry keys which deal with right click, not double click.

I think there is a vital registry key that handles double clicks in the folder view or folder pane that OVERRIDES the "folder options" setting "Open each folder in the same window".

Among many, I've tried the following, they change nothing (these are just a few examples):
I am LONG AFTER the point where system restore would have helped
It's not a virus
No changes work in the following because this is not a shell problemHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell default value set to "explore"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell default value set to "explore"
sfc /scannow - It is not a problem with system files
regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll"

This is so weird, see the screenshot. This happened after booting up my pc today (running XP Pro SP3).I had a malware infection days ago and removed it almost completely (apart from random tabs popping up in Firefox).Last night I ran O&O Defrag and it finished without any problems or errors.I shut down the pc and then this morning I hung at startup.Safe mode hung at mup.sys and after some Googling I managed to 'fix' it by copying over the original registry (as detailed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;en-us;Q307545).Obviously that got me back to how Windows was just after the original install in 2007.So I restored the backup of the registry I made just days ago. This fixed everything but gave me this really weird thing in Explorer.Even though the names are wrong I can still click the C: drive and see all my files and folders.I can enter any folder but the moment I double click a file it will open the file in the associated program and crash explorer at the same time.I hope someone has a solution for this! Now

Every once in a while my pc acts really nutty. What happens is that I'll go to open a program (lets say Nero Burning Rom) and on a single double click Nero will open up 70+ times. Furthermore, it makes mostly all of my programs act up when this starts happening. For example, when I click the arrow in the system tray it expands and collapses tons of times before it stops. If I open Firefox my homepage sort of half loads over and over and won't stop. MSN Messenger opens up then freaks out when I put the pointer in its window (this happens in the above Firefox example too). All of this activity makes the pc unusable until it all stops. Speaking of when it stops, it does't stop with a restart, it just stops mid session. I thought it could be a mouse problem because the trackball I use is pretty ancient and I figured it just might have just petered out finally, but then I tried another mouse that I found laying around and it did the same things. One other thing I've noticed it (the trackball) doing is when it's not being used the pointer slowly crawls towards the top of the screen. I've run my anti-virus and all three of my spyware programs and none of them find anything out of the ordinary. So what could be causing this annoyance? I'm starting to think it might be my mouse port, but how would I find this out?

Thanks in advance.

Here is my problem, for around 2 weeks :
When I double-click on a drive or folder, it opens it in another window, but explore in the same window if I right click then Explore.
Around the same time I noticed other problems, may be linked :
- I can't do anything in the account manager (there is the shield in front of the links like 'change my password and I can't use it and I can't open the parents contol in Configuration tools)
- In pictures directory, thumbnails appear then diseappear (to the default image icon)
- I experienced some problems copying folders.

My actions until now (some found in forums):
- Of course the option 'open in a single window' is selected (i deselected, applyed, reselected, rebooted ....)
- I tried to restore but it didn't work, may be the restoration point wasn't old enough, even i choosed the oldest one.
- I could create a new account on dos, to check if the problem would occure : it did :(
- I changed in regedit values HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Directory/Shell default to none (idem for Folder and drive), It didn't work, I also tried 'open' or 'explore' but no change, I checked the explore/command but it looks ok, and I guess it is since the right click/Explore is working fine.
- I ran the command : regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, it din't change anything either.
- I checked my drives with updated anti-virus and anti-malware (Avira + spybot + malwarebyte) and also ran Ccleaner and others ...

Like my title read, I can't open any folders in my Windows Explorer with a double click. It gives me the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." This also happens whenever I try to open any drives, such as C: drive. I can however run programs from Windows Explorer, and can right click, then choose open to open folders.

I have already done extensive searching on the subject, tried deleting autorun.ini files, tried some registry fixes, with no luck. I'm obviously running Windows 7, 32-bit, on a HP desktop.

Basically I was messing around in file types because my folder icons were botched. Ran TweakUI to fix folder icons, but here is what happened.

After I was poking around in there, double clicking a folder opened the search window. So i went into file types and created a new action, and pointed it at explorer.exe from my windows directory.

Now, the problem is, when i double click it opens the folder in a new window, instead of the same.

I when I am in the advanced settings of file types (tools-folder options-file types) the Edit and Remove buttons will not light up, but i am the administrator.

Restore defaults doesn't work.

Is there a backend way to fix this anyone knows of, short of reformatting ??

p.s. a system restore to a previous date did nothing.

First, I apologise, but this is a bit lengthy as I am not very familiar with windows (more a mac person), and I'm not sure what level of detail is necessary.

I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". I'm having a little difficulty here. In succinct terms, whenever I double left click on a folder, it opens up a search window and not the actual window. Opening up "My Computer" and "Hard Drive" is not a problem. If I right click and choose explore or open, the file opens normally but at the moment, this is my only method of navigating my computer.

The problem seems to have occurred after I did some experimenting with Windowsblinds and Avedesk. Since then, I have been trying to sort it out but no luck. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Hello texan16, Have you been playing with Registry Cleaners? Because I know Registry Cleaners can break Windows. The following is referring to RegCure. Please be aware that bleepingcomputer staff do not recommend the usage of registry cleaners / tools due to the following facts:Registry tools can cause irreparable damage to your Operating SystemRegistry tools can, as a result of the above, render your pc to be inoperable.*******************I see Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Example I am looking at a full window of folders with five coloumns of folders. If I double click on a folder in any coloumn except the far left coloumn, all of the coloumns move to the left by one coloumn space. Reseting file and view settings does not
fix the problem. I have seen this on Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Enterprise. It does not matter if it is on a domain or not or if a group policy is setting the home page.
This means I have to click twice as many times to open a folder in list view and that is the view I really want to use. Clicking twice as many times is also not good for carpel tunnel. This happens on my home and work computers and I have seen it on other
Windows 7 computers. Neither does the reg hack for MIUs or something similiar to that.

A:Windows 7 Explorer in list view moves coloumns of folders to left when you double click folder to open it

That’s a by design feature, but you can apply view settings to all folders of the same type. Here are
the detailed steps:
1. Open a folder and make changes as you like.
2. Press Alt to display the menu bar. Click Tools -> Folder options.
3. Click View tab.
4. Press the "Apply to folders" button.
5. Click Apply and click OK.
Note: The "Apply to folders" settings apply the current view setting to all folders that are optimized for the
same content as the folder you have open. This setting will not apply to the folders which is not the same type.

Hope that helps.

Help! I've lost my multiple selection ability in IE 6. Everytime I ctrl-click on any part of a webpage, even a multiple-entry listbox or page link, IE opens up a new webpage pointing to my Home page (Google). I've looked extensively through the settings, both for IE and any other apps that control Keyboard input and i can't seem to fix it. Anyone else had the same problem, or know how to fix it? Info greatly appreciated!

A:A Single Click of the Mouse Opens Multiple Tabs

It is now 10 days since I posted my problem, but alas no one has responded. Is anybody looking into this?===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump... Hi there,
thanks once again for your great support.

Today I came across the following problem and tried to google for an answer, but without luck.
In windows explorer, if I select files with different extensions (for example two files, one txt and one pdf) and right click to bring up the context menu, I noticed that the entry "Open" is missing. Instead if I select files with the same extension, the entry "open" is correctly displayed.
What I want to do is to get the "open" command in the context menu even if I select files of different type.
Is there a way to do that without having to write my own shell extension handler?

Thanks for any help that I will get.

A:windows explorer right click on filews with multiple extensions

Hi there,
I found a solution on my own.
1) Open regedit in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell
2) Add a key call "open all" (or whatever name you like)
3) add a key called "command" to the previous key
4) double click the "default" string and type "rundll32 url.dll,FileProtocolHandler "%1""

Job done!

Preface - first post, and I am fairly sophisticated computer user.

I double clicked an exe file by mistake the other day and now I have Internet Explorer popping up with random pages every now and then.
I never operate the computer as an administrator unless I have to, and I was operating under normal user credentials when I executed the above mentioned file.
To prevent the problem from occurring I have denied access to <C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe> to the user in question.

I've run full scans with "Spybot Search & Destroy", "Spyare Blaster". Clamwin and Trend Micro HouseCall are running now.
Appreciate I am slightly out of date with malware removal techniques - the last time I had a problem it was 6 years ago and the first two were state-of-the-art methods.

I am usually very well behaved but this time I just had one double click too much!

Kindly advice how to proceed as I am slightly lost.

Hi guys

I've got a strange problem: Windows explorer (file explorer, not IE) responds immensely slow to:
* Ctrl-C / Edit->Copy (but not Ctrl-V / Edit->Paste)
* Ctrl-X / Exit->Cut
* DEL (but NOT File->Delete)
* Enter / Double-click on a file with an associated application

For all these actions, Explorer shows the hour-glass for approx. one minute before continuing.

It seems that the problem is not slow disks - ie. Ctrl-C doesn't read the files, it merely marks the file for copying. And Ctrl-V is not slow (nor is copying by drag'n drop or via the command-line).

The problem appears both on local and network drives, as well as on the desktop.
I haven't got the faintest idea as to what's causing this.
Can anybody give me a clue?

A:XP Explorer - Ctrl-C / DEL / Double-click slow

I'm running Windows XP SP2 from an original install CD of the same version (i.e. it wasn't an upgrade to SP2). I run on a Dell D600 Latitude and my laptop is part of an Active Directory Windows Server 2003 domain.

I noticed that opening files via Windows Explorer takes at least a minute, even on 1 KB text files. Also, shortcuts to VBS files or MMC's take a minute to start as well. However, if I launch an application (i.e. an EXE) it opens quickly. Further, if I launch via the Start|Run option everything is lightening fast (as it should be). For example, I can run NOTEPAD C:\Textfile.txt and the file opens instantly w/Notepad. Likewise, if I type MMC in the Run field it snaps open in no time.

I've noticed that some times when I try to launch a local file via Explorer that my network monitor lights in the systray are active until the file opens. Go configure.

I also notice that sometimes the CPU pegs out- at least according to my Task Manager systray icon. It is possible that the CPU maxes out EVERY time but that only SOME times does it show in the systray as pinned out.

I'm sorry I don't have a solution. I've tried a dozen or so things to no avail. I even ran Spybot S&D 1.3 and found nothing except cookies and the DSO exploit.

I'm no genius but I'm at wits end.

Got a strange problem that popped up recently.

When I am in windows explorer and my drive letters are in the right side pane of the window...(IE clicking on My Computer in the left pane shows all drive in the right pane..) Instead of opening up that drive's folders, it pops up the search window.

Before I had just clicked on the drive and it expanded out and you could click on the files on that drive.

Anyone know what might cause this to change or what I can do to change it back?

Not a major issue, but it's puzzling as to how it got that way.

Thanks in advance...

A:Solved: Windows Explorer-Clicking on Drive Letter opens up Search instead of Exploring Drive!
