Do I have a faulty Thunderbolt port in my P51?

Q: Do I have a faulty Thunderbolt port in my P51?

I have a ThinkPad P51. I am trying to set up Thunderbolt networking between my P51 and my 2017 Macbook Pro. When I connect the cable from my P51's TB3 USB-C Port to the TB3 USB-C Port on the Macbook Pro, I get this pop-up: Also, my Thunderbolt networking options are grayed out: The Networking Driver Version is "Unknown": And finally, I'm unsure if this is normal or not, but when I pull up the Device Properties for Thunderbolt(TM) Controller - 15D9 it looks like this: Is my Thunderbolt port faulty? I did a complete uninstall of the Thunderbolt software and drivers, followed by a re-install using Lenovo System Update, reboot - same results.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,
I myself own an XPS 15 9550 and noticed that I was not getting the full Thunderbolt 3 speedover it's Thunderbolt 3 port. I expected speeds around 2700MB/s, because of the overhead withthe theoretical gross speed of 3870MB/s, but I only ever got 1400MB/s out of it.
I did some digging and found out that none of the XPS notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 are evenable to achieve the full TB3 speeds, because they are only connected with two PCI Express lanes (x2.3).You can read more about this on the following links:Dell Subreddit PostChipset Digging on Forum

Thunderbolt 3 and the promised speeds were the MAIN REASON I even bought this notebook.I feel very cheated here.

Hello!

I have a HP pavilion g6 laptop that I bought at the end of August. There are 3 USB ports on this machine and I have been using one of them to plug in my wireless mouse USB plug (the mouse is a logitech M305.) Now, this USB port does not work anymore. It doesn't detect the mouse USB plug nor does it read USB devices.

What can I do? Is it possible to physically replace a USB port? How?

Thanks!

I have a HP ZBook 15 G3 Mobile Workstation (Engery Star)- Product Number - V2W12UT#ABA. It has 2 USB Type C Thunderbolt Enabled Ports.   Not quite what it is used for.  Can you use a thunderbolt adapter for an Ethernet cable which uses Giga Power and a HDMI Cable, etc.  Basically the thunderbolt adapter would have more than one port.  Am i understanding this correctly?  If so, what product do you recommend?

A:Thunderbolt Port

Again, I have that same laptop and I happen to have in my bag a thunderbolt/USB-C to HDMI adapter and one that has a gigabit ethernet and 3 x USB 3.0 ports. HP also makes a Zbook dock I am using which has a DP and an HDMI, VGA, gigabit ethernet, a few USB 3.0 and a couple extra USB-C ports.  P/N P5Q58UT#ABA There are lots of adapters with multiple functions. Thunderbolt can allow some really amazing number of additional devices to be connected through one port like I believe 4 x 4K monitors.

The headphone port on my Thinkpad z60m 2529 rcu produces "uneven" sound. When I plug in my computer speakers, depending on how I wiggle the input jack the sound changes. If I hold it in the right place then the sound is as it should be. Otherwise, the sound is lower and portions of the music I am listening to is inaudible. I am tested this out on a number of songs and, as an example, I can not hear the bass guitar portions of a lot of the songs unless I put the input jack for my speakers in a very specific position and continue to hold it like that.

How do I fix this?
I was googling this and I read some forum posts about others users recommending people like me who have this problem to purchase an external audio device and do not use the internal sound card. They said it will improve the audio too. If I am not able to fix this, should I follow this route?

That is generally the most common solution as it doesn't require a tear down of the laptop. It may also not be possible to repair the broken port on the laptop or may require a new port or audio header/board. What's probably happened is the either the plastic port is broken and the connect the jack makes is poor or the pins that connect the port to the motherboard have broken loose and aren't making good contact. Using a PC Card, XpressCard, or USB sound card is generally the super fast and 100% effective fix.

A recent power outage has caused some of my hardware to function oddly...
My tv's hdmi ports seem to still work for say a ps3, but when hooking up to my gtx 760 I get "No Signal"?
I only have one hdmi port but several other dvi ports. My smaller monitor(plugged into dvi port 1) is functioning normally. It also seems the gpu is still functioning because I booted Dota 2 just fine with 60fps(vsync). Could this outage have fried the hdmi port? Should I be worried, should I return it or just buckle down with 2 dvi connectors? I was gonna test out hdmi to dvi cables to test my theory but am unsure what to do otherwise.

Hi, I think I'm having some problem with my Yoga 920's thunderbolt port. I bought a StarTech thunderbolt 3 dock. When I first time plug in the dock, everything works fine the thunderbolt software pops up and ask me the authorized the new dock. And I click always trust this device. Then the windows crushed with a blue screen and a QR code on it. After 920 restarted, and I tried the dock again, it was identified as USB 3.1 hub but no USB connection. And when I tried to open the thunderbolt software, it shows me the following warning.I tried to update the driver, but the installer said it was all ready. And then I downloaded HWINFO64 to check, I could not find the thunderbolt 3 controller under the PCI-Express X4 BUS. Is that means my thunderbolt 3 port is broken? What should I do with this? Btw, when I plug in the thunderbolt 3 dock, the powersupply is also connected, and the dock also provide the power, two power supply input at the same time, will that be a reason of the crash which also burn the thunderbolt 3 controller? Thank you.

I have found the official notice for thunderbolt 3 issue for many kinds of Thinkpad notebooks https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sk/en/solutions/ht508988 I have updated the thunderbolt software first and then the firmware as the suggestion mentioned in above page, but I still cannot found thunderbolt controller in system device management, and thunderbolt port are still not functional. Thunderbolt controller device are only available when I update the firmware of TB3 port, or Think Vantage search the firmware update process. No power delivery on tb3 port even in this process, all attached type-c device (USB 3.0 or 3.1 Gen 2 protocol, NVMe hard-disk bridge or hub) have no power supply. I would like to know what's wrong with my TB3 port and how can I repair my thunderbolt3 port? Due to tb3 FW can be updated normally, I guess there has something wrong with PD controller or EC, do I need a hardware repairation for current situation? I'm sorry that the screenshot is in Chinese, please pay attention to the version for software and NVM firmware, they are the lastest version.

Hi guys this is my first post as im at a loss of what to do .
Recently my old monitor stopped working, it was using a VGA cable, but the cable is not the problem, my PC is. I bought a new monitor which requires HDMI, however the port on my PC will not respond to the cord, meaning I have no monitor :/ or anyway to troubleshoot. The only thing I can think of would be to buy a USB to HDMI adapter? But even then I would need a monitor to install the device surely. I would usually take it to the shop, but with lockdown I am lost and without a PC for the forseeable future, help would be appretiated!

Hi Warro, and welcome to TSG.

I don't think anyone here can give you much help without knowing:

1: Name of the manufacturer and exact model number of your computer and/or the motherboard.

2: Name of the manufacturer and exact model number of any video controller expansion card (the card itself, not the manufacturer and model number of the graphics IC) plugged into the motherboard.

3: The operating system running the PC.

Hello, I'll be getting the new Thinkpad P52 mobile workstation soon and wanted to know (as I couldn't find this anywhere and this model is really new) - will it support connection of external GPUs (egpu) through one of it's Thunderbolt 3 ports? If so, are there any significant performance or heating limitations relating to this sort of usage for example for high-end gaming or 3D modeling applications? (assuming I don't use the internal dedicated Quadro P2000 gpu for this), are there such limitations on the external GPU itself?  (type, compatability etc.) Thanks!

I'm using the thunderbolt port for a single connection to a Dell usb-c dock (power in, KVM out, speakers, network, etc.).  The 720 charges real slow and the battery status message (in Lenovo Settings app) states that the "AC adapter cannot provide enough power for normal operation of your computer".  The Dell usb-c docks are powered with a 180w power supply that provides 60w of power to the computer, which is more than the 45w power supply that comes with the 720.  I have tried 3 different Dell docks, including a Dell thunderbolt 3 dock with a 240w power supply. I have to believe this is an issue with the Thunderbolt 3 driver on the 720 or something BIOS related.  BTW, the 720 has Windows 10 pro loaded (updated from the home version loaded by default) and Bitlocker enabled.  Don't think these changes have anything to do with the issue. I purchased Lenovo's thinkpad usb-c dock (which states that it's universal) and hope it charges the 720.

I'm thinking of getting a P70, I see it has 4 USB 3 ports and 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports.  My questions are: 1: Is each of the USB 3 ports connected to their own controller so that each port is capable of it's maximum bandwidth?  Or are all four ports connected to the same controller so that the data bandwidth is divided among the four ports? 2: Similar Thunderbolt 3 port question.  Is each of the two Thunderbolt 3 ports connected to it's own controller?  Or is the bandwidth shared between the two ports? I'm planning on using the USB 3 ports (maybe Thunderbolt 3 also) with a high end, high data rate USB 3 camera that, according to the specs, can use up 95% of the USB 3 bandwidth.  If I were to use two cameras at the same time, it would not work if all four ports are connected to the same controller/bus and sharing the bandwidth.  I have read that laptops usually share all USB ports on the same controller.  I'm hopeing it will be different with the P70, being a "professional" workstation class product. Thanks

i just received my X1C7 barely a week ago (Part Number: 20R10015US) and today, i tested using my X1C7 with the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 (Part # 40AN0135US). unbelievably, even though my X1C7, like all X1C7 models, have TWO USB-C ports on the left edge of the laptop, only the 2nd USB-C port from the back was able to be connected AND charging the laptop!   plugging the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 cable into the USB-C port closest to the back of the laptop (on the left edge) simply would not be charging my X1C7! may i ask if anyone has discovered the reason why this is happening?  one would think that both of these two USB-C ports on the left edge of the X1C7's left side would be equivalent! may i ask if anyone has discovered that the USB-C port closest to the back of the laptop (closet to the hinges) do not charge the laptop when connected to the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2? Thank you.

Hi, I decided to speed up my laptop by replacing almost unused ODD with a new SSD drive so mounted the disk into adaptive frame and plugged into the DVDR slot. Firstly everything looked up fine but after further attempts to clone old drive or install brand new Windows from bootable pendrive this new drive started behave unpredictably, ie. give errors, freeze, timeout partitioning operations or even wasnot visible as connected physical device case by case.
I firstly suspected the drive self so sent it to RMA, but the seller returned it with no hardware fault found. So now the surmise lies on faulty SATA subsystem. Since original HDD connected to SATA port #1 operates alltime without issues the possibly failing part is the SATA port #2 or SATA cable.
I will appreciate a solution to have flawlessly working SSD and possibly also keeping the old plate harddrive to retain storage space for less speed critical data
I.e. any chance to make working the problematic 2nd SATA channel, swap the ports, but then probably the old drive will be the one not stable. In the last resort I can try to change the SATA cable, but don't know which type I can use and if it's replaceable at all. Thanks for any good advices.

A few days ago I upgraded my PCs motherboard, from a MSI Z370 PC Pro, to a Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon (also MSI), at first there was no issues at all, until a few days after, my Ethernet speeds were dropping randomly.

One minute Ill have perfect internet speeds over ethernet (my normal speeds of 200mbps), then the next my download will be almost 0 mbps, while upload speeds are fine. This happens randomly, isnt fixed by a reboot, and Ive found no way to fix it. Ive tried the following troubleshooting:

Tried different Ethernet cables
Tried a different PC, and tested the speeds over WiFi (to see if it was my internet)
Removed and reinstalled the Ethernet drivers (once for each source: MSI site, Intel site and Windows device manager/update)
Assigning manual/static IP configuration within windows
Resetting BIOS
Updated BIOS

I should also mention that after the BIOS update (which did complete successfully) my 8600k was not being detected, I spent a few hours troubleshooting this and in the end what fixed it was either reseating the CPU power cable (wasnt an issue until the BIOS update however) or resetting the CMOS (Im leaning to this) But the core thing here is another issue seen is a CPU not being detected for a short period of time

As of now I cant think of anything else to try with troubleshooting the Ethernet port, and I am leaning towards an RMA. If anyone needs any more info about my specs I can provide them.

As the title suggests, is it possible I can charge my Acer VN7-592G through its Thunderbolt port? As far as I know, Thunderbolt 3 allows a maximum power input of 100 watts, whereas the charging adapter for the respective device inputs 135 watts. Nevertheless, is it still possible to charge the laptop through the Thunderbolt 3 port using a high powered USB power bank? I recently purchased this laptop and discovered a dirty little secret Acer included was that once the battery reaches 41% the CPU throttles itself to 0.78 mHz which makes the system very unstable. (Bear in mind, battery saver was off, and CPU was set to High Performance, and 100% max load). I realize the charging process will be very slow, but will the device still charge? I need to know this ASAP because if it doesn't, and the CPU throttling issue still occurs, I will sell the notebook on Kijji, and purchase the Dell Inspiron 15 7559 that has a larger battery, same processor, and doesn't undervolt the CPU when you have 41% battery still remaining. Being charged $1,400 for a laptop that throttles its CPU down to the speed of a primitive Pentium 3 when the battery has sufficient charge is a total rip off.

Hello - I wish to connect my 24" Dell monitor (it has every port imaginable) to my Lenovo Yoga 720 WITHOUT using the Thunderbolt port. Is this possible? I am a Jazz musician and I with to use the external display for (1) reading complicatedf [e.g., classical piano] sheet music and (2) for use with DAWs (digital audio workstations, such as Abelton, Pro Tools, etc., where there is LOTS of info crammed in tight and a large monitor is needed). My Yoga's TB port is used for a 500 gig Samsung external hard drive.  The Samsung houses my music programs (e.g., the DAWs, Ivory piano, Easy Drummer, etc.), and I placed them there for the fast speed (this really helps eliminate the latency on the pianos).  I don't need fast speed with the monitor; my prior Lenovo G780 worked just fine with my 24" Dell monitor; the G780 had an HDMI port. I don't find a "TB dock" that has (1) HDMI, display port, etc. AND (2) another TB port.  Does such a thing exist? I've tried the crappy "USB montitors."  They (1) suck and (2) are not 24". Am I screwed here? Thanks, - Jeff Newton (Jazz saxophonist and pianist)

Does anyone know how many PCIexpresslanes are allocated to the thunderbolt 3 port on the Yoga 730 15".  I have gotten in touch with lenovo technical support, but they had no idea. I did see where the 720 is thought to have 2 lanes, but I am not sure if that is the same on the 730. Thanks for any info!

This has been a baffling adventure that is now at least three week long. Essentially I have a W541 Thinkpad which is a wonderfully fast and capable machine. However it has an internal NVidia Quadro graphics option that does nothing for me given that it will only work with an external display. The external display can only be connected via the ThunderBolt port which is a ThunderBolt2 type port. Not a type 3 Thunderbolt. A type 2 ThunderBolt. So I tried to find a docking station thing for this W541 but seems there only exists ThunderBolt3 type docks and so I have a shiney new Lenovo 40AS0090US USB-C Dock Gen 2 thing which has all manner of cool ports on it and that means display port and HDMI.  The W541 Thinkpad does NOT have HDMI.  There is only a old style 1980's VGA port there which only works with the Intel graphics and the NVidia fancy Quadro never does anything.  So the new Lenovo ThunderBolt3 dock seems to be the right way to go but no. The cable for the ThunderBolt3 dock ( which cost me another $300.00 to get and weeks of waiting ) does not plug into the ThinkPad W541 which has ThunderBolt2. I see nothing for a ThunderBolt2 type dock anywhere on Amazon or even the Lenovo or IBM web site. Maybe the ThunderBolt3 dock has to work but at a lower speed and only for a single external display?? I have no idea. What am I supposed to do to hook up two external display monitors to this W541 thing??  The specifications for the W541 suggest that one may hoo... Read more

Hi, I have the Dell XPS 2720 (2013) and I have a thunderbolt port in the back of the computer that worked great for my thunderbolt external drive when I had windows 8.1 installed but now since I installed Windows 10. The external drive is not recognize by the thunderbolt port.
I don't know how to fix this or if there is no current driver out set to fix this but I'm sure other people are having the same problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

A:Dell XPS 27 Thunderbolt Port not recognize by Windows 10

Hi,
I've got the same problem.
But when i updated to Windows 10 my WD My Passport RAID-0 Thunderbold-Drive worked fairly fine (crashed some times, wasn't recogniced every time, very slow) but suddenly it stoped working and even my Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt will not be recognised.

I'm having issues getting the TB16 to work with the XPS 15 9550. I successfully installed all the drivers in the proper order as documented prior to plugging in the TB16 for the first time.

I've verified that I indeed do have a Thundrerbolt port - there is a Thunderbolt symbol next to the USB-C port.
When I do plug in the TB16 the power button on it will power the system off/on.
I've used a usb-c to Displayport adapter and a usb-c to usb 3.0 adapter with a flash drive. Both worked successfully so the basic functionality of the usb-c port is working.

When I plug in the TB16 I never got an authentication window pop-up. In the Thunderbolt software it shows no attached devices.

The details setting in the Thunderbolt software looks fine, it appears to have the proper driver and firmware levels.

When I check the Thunderbolt driver it says that 'the hardware device is not connected to the computer'.
I'm at a loss - everything looks good except for the fact that nothing happens when I plugin the TB16. I'm wondering if there's a hardware problem with the Thunderbolt controller itself? I'd appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

You might open the Thunderbolt software and set it to allow all devices.  I reset my system and redid the TB16 and it shows the cable and dock as approved devices.
It was not hard for me.  The thunderbolt controller is on the computer.  You show some correct info for that controller, although since I have a 9365, that specific info may be different, but you do show a different controller generation..

As no-one seems to have an answer for my dual display-problems with the P50 and workstation dock, I now have a (hopefully) simple question: Is the rear P50 Thunderbolt 3 port active while the computer is docked? I wonder if I can use the StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to dual displayport adapter, and connect my two displays to this, using the dock only for USB and LAN connections. I hope someone can answer this, as I'd rather not spend another $100 on yet another useless adapter.

I just bought a new Sandisk Ultra USB Type-C Drive 64GB which is intended to be used with Type-C devices and Android phones.  It is recognized in my Android phone but it is not recognized in my P50 workstation. Am I doing something incorrectly or is this port not intended to be used as a data port?

I received my X1 Carbon 5th Gen just a few weeks ago. Today, a thunderbolt 3 port next to an LED suddenly died and seems to no longer accept any devices. I tried 4K monitor and some other USB devices thourgh a USB type C hub connected to the port, but nothing worked. I tried with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 17.04, the port no longer works with any operating systems. Interestingly, Windows 10 now thinks it's connected to AC power even when nothing is actually connected to the Thunderbolt 3 ports. Therefore I strongly suspect this is a hardware issue. Does anyone have a similar problem?

Recently I've bought a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock, but the only thing that works is that it charges my laptop. I have an external display connected and a mouse and keyboard, but non of them work. I assumed it is a driver problem, but I have all updates and fixes installed from Lenovo support page, but it still doesn't work. I have also installed Windows drivers for the dock and tried to run dock FW update tool, but it wasn't found at all. Also Thunderbolt Control Center app doesn't see anything connected to Thunderbolt port. Any tips on what could be wrong and how to make it work? This way, the dock is useless for me

Hey,

I am on a laptop with a gtx 765m. I am trying to connect a thunderbolt port to a display port monitor. My understanding is that thunderbolt is backwards compatible with display port. But, for the life of me I can not get it to work.

I am using a minidisplay port -> display port cord.

I have ended up hooking the monitor up with an hdmi cord for now. FYI the monitor is a 2560x1440 monitor if that matters.

Thanks,

A:Thunderbolt to display port monitor. GTX 765m

Do you know for sure the video is ported through the Thunderbolt connector?

Any chance we could get your computer model number?
