P50 Owners: Are You Getting Windows Feature Updates?

Q: P50 Owners: Are You Getting Windows Feature Updates?

P50 owners, have you been getting Windows features updates? My P50 (Product Number 20EN0013US) has not been offered any new Windows feature updates since 1803 in June 2018. All the other Thinkpads in my purview have received all the updates on time. I'd like to know whether or not this is unique to my machine, and whether I should manually install the updates. If you've manually updated your P50 to 1809 or 1903 have you experienced any issues?

Preferred Solution: P50 Owners: Are You Getting Windows Feature Updates?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft Makes Windows 10 Updates Smaller and Faster with New OS Feature

Microsoft has officially introduced the new so-called Unified Update Platform (UUP) which is the company?s latest attempt to make Windows 10 updates smaller and faster on both PCs and smartphones.

In essence, UUP is a new technology that makes it possible for Windows 10 devices to download only the changes that have been implemented since the previous update, which should significantly improve the delivery of large OS updates, as it?s the case of the upcoming Creators Update due in early 2017. These differential updates thus make it possible to receive only the latest improvements and not a full OS build.

UUP will be available on PCs and smartphones powered by Windows 10, but not on Xbox One consoles, as Microsoft is not shipping updates via Windows Updates here.

The company explains that download size can be decreased by as much as 35 percent, which is definitely a big achievement and comes in handy especially for users with slow Internet or limited bandwidth.

Faster checking for updates
Microsoft says that it?s also working on making checking for updates more efficient by changing how the system works on Windows 10 devices.

?We are reducing the update data sent to client devices as well as the amount of processing we are doing on devices, this especially important for devices built on the Mobile OS. Using UUP, when your device checks for updates, the Windows Update service will evaluat... Read more

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

Getting a bunch of false positives of "identity theft" based upon abnormal workstations that users are accessing.  Why do we know they are false positives?  The source workstation in every alert was doing Windows Updates right when the
alert hit.  The alerts say the workstation usually accesses 30-40 other workstations over CIFS.
So...this is actually normal behavior for Windows Updates with this new feature: "Windows Update Delivery Optimization".  The feature is available on Windows 10 only (which the OS in all of our alerts).  Check out this for more info on
this feature:  https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10-windows-update-delivery-optimization
The Windows Update feature makes the workstation reach out to other workstations for its updates instead of going over the internet.  Thats the problem.  Thats whats generating the list of abnormal workstations accessed.
Any ideas on how to "teach" ATA that this is normal?

Just updated to Creators Update and trying to figure out the changes. From what I have been reading on deferring feature updates, under advanced options, you can defer up to 365 days. The drop down menu on this latest up to date build allows 8 days. This is in contrast to what I've been reading. Has this been changed and if so, how can I get more days without using Group Policy ?

Is there a difference between 'Quality', 'Definition' or 'Other' Windows 10 updates and 'Feature' updates?

When my PC carries out 'Quality', 'Definition' or 'Other' updates they work perfectly.

'Feature' updates always fail drastically. I have tried the v1809 to v1909 Feature update several times and each time the download and install phases appear to complete successfully with no error messages, but the restart phase concludes with the BSOD and the stopcode error message ?unmountable boot volume?.

I have a spare bootable drive containing Windows 10 and I used it to examine my C drive. Each time it reports that the C partition has been deleted.

Fortunately I have installed Rollback RX and I was able to revert my C drive to its former state.

I tried Chkdsk, Windows 10 Repair Upgrade and Clean Boot. Same result.

Can anyone help to identify what is going on?

I bought a laptop from display at Staples,

So all the folders, list as c:\my documents\staples.. and have noticed that Staples is considered the owner when installing certain programs how do I change it?

A:changing owners in windows xp

Changing the login profile name does not change the folder names, they are locked as part of the XP security.

If you try to change the names using a linux boot CD etc, you will certainly cause Windows to fail (I have seen it happen...).

If the laptop was a display model, the very first thing I would be doing is cleaning it up by reloading Windows from the start, selecting the name you want at that time.

Guys,

For those of you with new computers who received them over the holidays, you may notice a "Help And Support" option on your Start Menu, which will bring up the Support Center. (My computer also has a direct Support Center Link) The left side is Microsoft help, the right side is Dell Support with about 5 or 6 links that are supposed to take you to the appropriate website. Note that there are about 2 or three of the links that don't work from inside the Support Center. They are those links just below the Dell Support link on the right side which works fine. If you click on the link that doesn't work, your machine will lock up and you will have to bring up the Windows Device Manager (CTRL+Alt+ Delete) and End Task those options.

Those links may be outdated or the version of the software itself may be old. You can still get to all of them by going to the "Solution Center" on your desktop or the "Dell Support" icon, which should be on your desktop as well.

With XP, it is often better to go directly to Dell's website to get the information that you need rather than doing it from within some of those internal help menus. A lot of connections and device drivers that integrate with those help menus have changed. A lot of times, big companies don't bother to update that information in some of those help menus that are integrated with the OS. If you want help, go directly to the manufacturer's website. Make sure that if you... Read more

Samsung Windows Laptop Owners Urged To Download Fix To MitM Vulnerability

Samsung laptop owners are being urged to update their Windows PCs after the discovery of a vulnerability that can allow remote attackers to download files onto a targeted system and gain complete control over the laptop.
The flaw is tied to a feature called “Samsung SW Update Tool 2.2.5.16” designed keep Samsung laptop users’ drivers and software up to date. Security researchers at Core Security discovered the vulnerability in November 2015 and disclosed the flaw March 4 after Samsung issued the patch to fix the problem.

Hello everybody. What started out as a request for guidance ended up with me solving my own problem. Thought I may as well pass on my findings anyway just in case it helps somebody else in the same situation.

So over the weekend, through a series of upgrades, I successfully hopped from Vista to Windows 10 Professional 64-bit. But, as is not unusual, I again managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. With my new SSD loaded with Win 10 goodness, I realised I was still operating it in IDE mode. A confident dip into the BIOS to enable AHCI mode resulted in Windows then failing to start because it no longer recognised the boot drive! I'm guessing the AHCI driver wasn't loaded during installation since the mode wasn't in use. So back to IDE mode and a surf around for solutions. Plenty around pertaining to Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 involving changing registry values but nothing tangible for Win 10. However I found this alternative Win 8 workaround which I can confirm works equally well in Windows 10. I realise I'm probably teaching my Grandmother to suck eggs with this post here but perhaps somebody as equally technophobic as me, may find it useful. This is what I did:

1. Run Command Prompt as Admin
2. Invoke a Safe Mode boot with the command: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
3. Restart the PC and enter your BIOS during bootup.
4. Change from IDE to AHCI mode then Save & Exit.
5. Windows 10 will launch in Safe Mode.
6. Right click the Window icon and sele... Read more

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So one thing that I love about windows is the alt+tab feature where you can cycle through the open programs.  One change that I noticed from windows 10 to previous windows is that the desktop was removed from the alt+tab.  I found that
whenever you use a program (games mostly for me) that goes into a fullscreen mode and don't have another program open, you can't exit out of the fullscreen, in windows 8 and before I was able to just alt+tab to access the desktop.  I've tried using
alt+tab, windkey+d, ctrl+shift+esc.  The only way I found to work was to ctrl+alt+del then open the task manager then you can access the desktop.  The problem here is that if I'm using the fullscreen program and want to open
a second program, I have to go through the process I explained to get, let's say, spotify open.  I hope in the next update the desktop gets included in the alt+tab feature!

Hi, whenever I turn on or off "Number Lock" in my keyboard a notification message pops up in the lower right corner of the screen displaying the status (ON or OFF). Same for "Caps Lock". Is this a Windows 7 feature? If so, how can I disable it? Thanks (I went to Control Panel/Keyboard but found no such feature)

A:Windows 7 feature?

From what I could find out, the only notification that comes with Windows is the Ease of Access Center / Make the keyboard easier to use. This option will play a 'tone' when the Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock are activivated. Any on-screen notifications are placed there by third party software that is usually installed by the computer manufacturer. Or it may also be placed on the system with software from some custom, third party keyboard manufacturers.

I would like to use my 16 gig or maybe a new 32 gig USB flash drive to use the Windows To Go feature of Windows 8. BUT, the Consumer Preview has no way to create such. I've only found a boot setting pertaining to it. Has anyone got this to work or go?

Before the naysayers say it, you CAN run Windows off a flash drive. I've already done it with Windows 7 on my 16 gig USB 2.0 flash drive. It boots about as fast as most PCs, and works quite fine. I want to see Windows 8 in action though.

A:Has anyone got the Windows To Go feature working?

Hi there
It's possible with XP -- there's a post about Hirens CD which is an XP system that runs off a flash drive --

I don't know if it can be done for VISTA, W7 or W8 --- pity as it could be a useful tool.

I currently use a very small Linux distro for this sort of stuff and bring up a W7 VM which is as near a portable system I can get.

Works on W8 as well -- install a MINIMAL Linux with a GUI -- install vmware / VBOX on the linux and then copy a W7 / W8 VM on to the USB drive

I'm using a 16 GB drive -- the Linux distro is only 1 GB and I've the other 15GB for a small W8 system.

You don't need to be "Geekish" for a tiny Linux -- all you want it for is to be able to boot and start your Windows VM

Once up and running your W7/ W8 VM can access via networking relevant drives etc etc.

It runs Office quite nicely too but I wouldn't try and run Photoshop on a Windows VM running off a USB !!.
Hint -- create the VM on s "Normal" Disk first as W7 will object if you try and install to a small Disk drive. Then "Clone" the VM using Acronis or some other tool to the USB.
To Coke robot == I'd be interested in knowing how you got W7 to run natively via boot of a USB -- Unless you were using some type of sysprepping I thought that you'd have trouble with the USB drivers as these aren't loaded until quite late into the kernel load.

A USB BOOT installation disk is quite a different matter as it simply has to read the whole OS via Bootstrap on to a H... Read more

I think it's time to discuss what we LIKE about Windows 8!

I'll start, my favorite features by far are the new power management abilities, Start Screen, Automatic Maintenance, and Windows Defender. The power management abilities of Windows 8 exceed that of 7 and it ACTUALLY manages the power of my PC! Before in Windows 7, I had to install a motherboard utility by ASUS to speed down the processor and the rest of the system to reduce power when I don't need it. It was ok, but not like Windows 8. In 8, I can set the power plan to Balanced, and it actively changes the processor clock speed to match my usage. Or, I can set it to Power Saver at night and the processor is clocked down to 800 MHz. But it's just not my system that it does that on, it will do that to pretty much EVERY PC! Fantastic!

Start Screen is cool, simply put. It's fresh and new and makes the user experience new.

Automatic Maintenance will save me SO much time dealing with other peoples' PCs and their performance issues. No longer will I be nagged! And speaking of nags, Windows Defender has a built in anti-virus, which again, less issues to deal with!

What are yours?

I have recently upgraded to windows 7 64bit and do not have the aero feature. Also, a ran a tool that tests if your system is capable of playing blu ray and it said my graphics card was not compatible.

I have the following motherboard which has an Integrated ATI Radeon HD4200:

Asus M4A785D-M PRO 785G Socket AM3 DVI VGA HDMI Out 8 Channel Audio MATX Motherboard - Ebuyer

Do I need a new graphics card? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

A:No windows 7 aero feature?!

Install the driver.

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Choose motherboard/integrated drivers for x64.

The HD4200 is quite good and will handle whatever you throw at it.

Running Windows 8.1 after updating some months ago from 8.0. I have the original install disk purchased from MS. During the initial "refresh" start up...the system is asking for more files that seem to be missing. Using my original install disk... it fails to work, as the system says it is the incorrect disk. What? This is the disk from MS that I installed 8.0 with! So refreshing the operating system will not work as these "missing" files that the system is asking for are where....
Have no idea how to refresh without these "missing" files.
Any ideas for me.

A:Can seem to use Windows refesh feature

You can't fix 8.1 using an 8 disk.

What is a "refresh startup" ?

While trying to remove/disable irrelevant "stuff" on my laptop I discovered the existence of Windows XPS Documents in Windows Features
- in fact I have never heard of Windows Features until today, nor have I EVER struck an XPS file.
. . I started with Windows 3 ... I now know Windows Features were introduced in VistaStart > Control Panel > Programs and Features
Programs and Features (window)
[Turn Windows features on or off] ... link in left-hand navigation panel
- Windows Features dialog takes about 10 seconds to "fill" with all features I can successfully disable XPS Services ... BUT ... disabling XPS Viewer shows an alert ...

Q: If I disable XPS Services will the sky fall in ?
- keywords are "might" and (which) "default settings" ?
- if by "default settings" MS is eluding to file associations, why the vagaries. Rhetorical question
- the link for Go online to learn more ... is all vague generalizations.

MS official explanation XPS documents: FAQs ... was no help for this XPS newbie.

BEST real-world explanation ...
What Is an XPS File and Why Does Windows Want Me to Print to One?

... so can I safely disable XPS Viewer... thank you

A:XPS Documents, Windows Feature ?

You are perfectly fine to disable xps reader windows feature.

Nothing bad will happen. You just will not be able to open xps documents

xps is Microsofts alternative to pdf. It just never caught on.

Recently purchased an Acer 5733.

Why will my new higher zoom setting not remain as such, until I wish to reset.

It seems erratic from one web page to another, and often automatically returns to 100%.

Sometimes when I return to previous viewed web pages, the higher setting will have remained.

If I set at 125% I want it to stay there!!

How can we modify the Windows Update feature in 8.1 to allow us to choose when Windows is updated & when windows "forces" us to do a reboot ? I'd like to decide when my PC or Tablet reboots, NOT when when Windows decides to do so. - like in the XP Pro OS.

A:Windows Update Feature in 8.1?

Go the control panel. Once the window opens. Click on the Windows Update Icon. Once it window opens. Up in the left corner. Click on settings. This should let you change your settings.

Is the backup feature in Win 7 any good?  Did a search and could find nothing here on it.

I have been using Syncback and Acronis True image.  I use several externals so I have space for the actual files.  I like Syncback since I have space.  Acronis has worked well in the past but got very buggy so I'm off of it.

A:Windows 7 back up feature

Acronis is what Win 7 uses...I've used it just to make images. Then switched to Seagate's Disk Wizard which is an Acronis product.
Switched to the Disk Wizard because it makes a complete hdd image of dual boot installs. I'm satisfied with it.
Just home usage...don't need daily or hourly backups. Just a once a month or so new image....when I think to do it.

There is a Windows 8 feature that drives me nuts. I've noticed that when I'm in desktop mode and I have certain other apps running, those apps will show up as thumbnails when I hover over the top left-hand corner of the screen. The really annoying part is that when I brush my finger a certain way over the trackpad I'll inadvertently switch over to those apps and leave desktop mode. This makes browsing the web very painful and is a major nuisance. I'm not very computer savvy and I was hoping someone would help me turn it off.

Hello Vladimir, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Disabling edge swipes for your touchpad should stop this for you.

Hi.

OEM versions are tied to one machine, so no is the answer to your question.

Hello, I own an Hp pavilion tx2000 with windows vista x86 installed and wanted to upgrade into windows 7 x86. In windows 7, its one of the new features is the windows touch. I''m so eager to try it on my pc but want to ask anyone if someone have tried it? And which windows 7 edition does windows touch feature is offered?

A:Have anyone tried the windows 7 touch feature?

I assume you're referring to touch screen capabilities. It works fine as long as you have a touch screen monitor that is compatible.

Windows Touch is available only in the Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions of Windows 7.

The Windows XP PRO search feature ("Search for all files and folders") is as slow as molassas in winter.

I have a large folder with lots of huge game files. Whenever I do a search for a document or whatever, it spends lots and lots of time searching this game folder, but since I don't store anything there, it's a complete waste of time. I'd like to be able to tell Windows to skip searching this folder, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this. Is there?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know of any way to ignore folders during a search. Sounds like a desireable feature though.

Move the game folder out of the way for the duration of the search replacing it after the search or start your searches in a path that does not include the game folder.

On the other hand you can use the indexing services to speed up searching, but it is usually recommended to disable the indexing services as the constant indexing has an impact on performance.

Index your drive with Google indexing capability to speed up searching - if that serves your need.

Checkout Yanhoo drive indexing service while your at it for another alternative.

My neighbor's Search feature is no longer working in Windows XP Home, e.g., Start, Search, For files or folders..., put in specific search, little search assistant guy comes up but nothing happens. What could be the problem?

She had not upgraded her virus detection software and had been infected with two viruses and had also had several spyware and adware programs running. I removed all the infections with an upgrade of Norton which I ran in safe mode and then removed the other programs with Spybot S&D version 1.3. Oh, I also applied critical upgrades.

The Search feature did not work right away before any upgrades.

I apologize for not being able to supply more information since I lost the paper where I wrote it all on (viruses, programs running, version of XP, etc.)

I think in view of the references to spyware and virus i would post a hijackthis log for the secruity gurus to look at. Often here you will see that people have used ad-aware and spybot to get rid of most of the rubbish, but still leaves problems

so here
HIJACK THIS:
Try not to reboot
Currently the Spyware identified by the security experts and especially the morphing and breeding .exe`s in the new variants of CWS, after every re-boot required by Ad-Aware and Spybot etc, just spawns more and more files for the poster to find and delete. This is making the advice the security experts give just too hard to follow.
One of the security experts recently had one log with over a hundred files, they guy had to format c: drive.

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/downloads.html
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/
http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.
