Q: How is McAfee AV / Internet Security doing these days and some questions

Hi guys,

I'd just like to ask how is McAfee McAfee AV / Internet Security doing these days...?

A friend was asking me the other day and I really did not know what to tell her because I have not been using McAfee since 1998.

May I have some inputs as to McAfee's performance today from you guys? Maybe some strong points and low points perhaps..What about slowdowns during usage?

It's AV(only) as compared to say, Avast's or AVG or Avira's AV..?

It's Internet Security Suite as compared to say, Avast IS 2016 or Emsisoft IS..?

Or if I'll choose an ALL FREE software config that can (well if it can) suffice for McAfee IS protection what will it be..?

AVG Free + TinyWall + ERP + MBAE free + HMP..perhaps..?

Any suggestions as to the all-free combo as well as the ideas on McAfee AV and IS performance is very welcome
Thanks a lot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would not advice you to use mcafee , but it is not great in my opinion , confusing gui and the price what you pay for the suite is way to high! I cannot comment on the way it performes on a machine , like any other security product it may vary on each different machine. what kind of user is your friend? does she have computer knowledge or is she a novice? there are better av's ou there and for free also! like AVG or Avast which are better detection wise. If she wants a paid product go for emsisoft internet security. a nice free setup imho would be : AVG free or Avast free ( Hardened mode ) and Comodo Firewall ( Cruelsisters settings ) and an anti exploit like Malwarebytes anti exploit free or Hitman Pro Alert ( Paid ) protect against browser and software exploits.

I would buy Emsisoft Internet Security because I love the product and it's really good (overall).
On the other hand if you don't wanna pay for any security product you can use Comodo Internet Security or Qihoo 360 Total Security Essential.

Hi all,

my Internet security suite 6.0 has expired I have purchased ISS 8.0, the problem I am having is that to download the new software they ask me remove 6.0 first. This is where my problem starts, using the Internet Security uninstall wizard I get message that tell me that because of missing components it cannot remove the old software??? So I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, on one hand I have the new 8.0 waiting to be downloaded , but cannot because I cannot remove 6.0. Does anyone out there know how to manually remove 6.0? Sorry this is a long winded post, but having tried Mcafee's help wizard I am still at square one.

Many thanks.

Best thing to do is to post your issue at the McAfee Help Forums. They also have manual uninstall instructions at their Technical Support Site. It's always a good idea to uninstall any current software before installing new version of the software. Also visit the Windows Update and make sure your version of Windows is up-to-date.

Hey all ! Look at the av comparatives test, McAfee is good !
Why all people are saying that McAfee is not good ? I don't understand ! McAfee is good, I like the UI, it's simple, effective and it's not heavy on the system ! I like it !

A:McAfee Internet Security good !

McAfee performs differently on each device, while McAfee may appear to be light on your PC, it may not be the case on someone elses. Also if you're using Windows 7 or 8, you have an advantage over someone with using the old Windows XP OS.

I have often said McAfee places their best interest for Business/Corporate software, and their Consumer software is just a side-sale. While that may not be the case anymore. A lot don't use McAfee because of the bad reviews, or bad experience -only from what I know.

Many bash Microsoft Security Essentials for being basic with lack of zero-day protection and low detection rate. But it does work well enough to protect one's PC, if the user knowingly understand some basic computer security.
This can very well apply to McAfee, and many other security software.

Also some users don't like the number of processes/background tasks running, and often it's compared with other AV's with 3 or less running tasks. So while it may not affect system performance, it's probably a personal preference.

Last thing I should mention, don't fully trust these AV comparison tests, because in the real world, they are extremely unrealistic for the majority of PC users.

Others may have a different view, but I hope this helps.

Unbelievably, my husband still has an old laptop running XP and he insists on using it to check email and play cards. He has McAfee Internet Security installed for AV protection and also Malwarebytes Premium and the laptop contines to chug along. I should note he doesn't do ANYTHING other than checking email and looking at Yahoo online. His subscription to McAfee expires in May and in my continuing efforts to convince him to get a newer (and more secure!) laptop, I went on their site and it appears that they no longer even support XP. Can someone confirm this? It does appear to be working on his laptop and will update and run scans. If XP is no longer supported, is there any recommendations for a light weight anti-virus to use on his old laptop? I read that perhaps Avast would work. Appreciate any suggestion you can offer. And yes, I'm completely aware that the XP machine should be retired and am working to convince him of that!!

OK, this is a long story but I'm gonna need help. I wanted to try out McAfee software for 30 days to see if I should actually pay for it or not, so I download it, install it, everythings fine. I reboot my computer to this

"One of the ActiveShield components is Missing or was not installed properly
<<Path to File>>"

(Sorry no screenshots or paths were written down ), anyways I tried to uninstall it, I looked in the directory in the start menu in the Add/Remove programs control panel applet. Nothing!

So I boot into safemode to attempt to use KillBox to delete both directories, then use HijakThis + Sys. Mech 4 to get rid of old registry entries. That idea failed, everytime I open HJT the entries simply reappear. The files are gone obviously.

Now I wouldn't have noticed this until someone IM'd me saying
"Mac, you're servers runnin really slow" (Its a halo dedi by the way), so the way I'm thinking of it is this

It's trying to load files that it can't, and exhausting all the resources until it can load them.
I only say the suite because I actually downloded the suite, but only installed McAfee Virus Scan v10 from the suite.
What can I use to get the McAfee registry entries out of my registry for good!?
What am I looking for?

I can't stand security suite software for this reason. I never used Mcafee, but I had the same problem with Norton's suite. I'd uninstall it and go with only the protection you're comfortable with. I use AVG-free AV. I don't actually use a firewall, but I have used the free Sunbelt-Kerio personal firewall and found it to be very good. As far as spyware, I use Spyware Blaster and scan with Ad-aware and Spybot every once in a while.

First, I apologize as this is my first post on here and I am unsure if this is the appropriate place as I don't know if it is a virus or an issue with software compatibility.  My mother's friend has an eMachine that is about 5-6 years old.  Recently, she received notification to update and renew McAfee Internet Security, which she did.  She turned her computer off and when she turned it back on the next day, she was no longer able to download anything from the Internet (Internet Explorer 8).  I verified that nothing can be downloaded (tried downloading more recent versions of IE, Malwarebytes, Chrome, etc.) Additionally, when you type in "hotmail.com", it simply loads as a blank white screen.  I should mention that when you first launch Internet Explorer 8, it warns you about the security settings being too low, her settings are on medium-high.  I tried to open McAfee and all that happens is a blank white window.  I then tried to run the system in safe mode.  That didn't seem to make any difference.  The final thing I want to mention is that all of her shortcuts on her desktop were non-functional.  I was able to get those fixed by creating new ones, but it was weird that all of them stopped working.

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

A little back story before I say what the problem is. About seven months ago McAfee began to "install" a program on my computer. Since I have never had McAfee on my computer, except for the free trial, I began to worry and called a friend that works on computers. He told me to wait till it installed and then uninstall it. I waited all the way till a couple of days ago when, by a miracle, it installed. Now here's the problem. The "new" program opens up multiple times, so far the record is seven McAfee programs open at the same time. Any time I try to click on the programs it takes me to a white screen. So to stop it I always have to go to task manger but that any last about an hour before it opens up again. I have tried going to the control panel and uninstall it that way,but again, it takes me to a white screen. Any suggestions on what I should do?

I have to decide which to choose from. Since my friend is giving me additional license for F-Secure since he recently bought 3 keys which unfortunately has no reason to use the other 2, so he said he'll give me one once I bought a new laptop, but my new laptop came with a free 1 year free subscription for McAfee internet security. So I have a dillema on which to use first. Should I use McAfee or accept my friend's giveaway.

PS: The McAfee that came with my brand new laptop isn't pre installed. They just gave me this prepaid card I think which says OEM card. And the card says I have to activate the key first on McAfee website before I could use it. Second, I used the 6th month trial of Mcafee on my desktop. Tried it for a few months, then uninstalled it because it slowed my PC down. I think the trial now is expired so I can't try it on my laptop first.

So in order to prevent such thing ill lay the terms now.
Please only discuss good points of one or another solution. Any post that represents solely mcafee hate will be deleted.

I personally used mcafee and see no problem with it. Fsecure however did cause me some slight slow downs but both are good and have decent protection.

If you have one year then use that. If you have two systems then use both mcafee and fsecure.

Hi,
I use a Dell Inspiron 6000, and i am aware that Dell computers usually come with Mcafee software installed. But i was trying to use Skype and other video chatting software but it wasn't working properly.I uninstalled Mcafee after following the advice of someone from a different forum, because they said Mcafee prevents such chatting software from working properly. So i downloaded RegSweeper and deleted all McAfee files. NOw, my computer loads a little slower and also the internet does not work. Security Center used to have me sign in when the computer first started up in order to access internet, and i think that is why i can't connect to the internet now. but i have no idea as to what i should do to fix it!
please help!!!

For some reason I haven't been getting my automatic McAfee security updates in recent weeks. And whenever I attempt to get them manually I get the following message: McAfee Security Center is unable to connect to the Internet. Please check that your connection to the Internet is functioning correctly and click Retry.. Clicking on Retry does no good -- I get the same message. Another thing I've noticed lately is that my Security Index and Antivirus Index are now registering 7.0, and I'm pretty sure they had been at 8.5 for as long as I can remember. I presume that missing my automatic updates has caused these readings to drop.

Obviously my Internet connection is functioning correctly, so what could possibly be the wrong? I've even monitored a McAfee help website where I've seen the exact same problem discussed by others, but no solution has yet been given.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who is able to offer a solution.

Thank you,
wgreene

There are actually a couple questions buried in this post...
I got that Internet Security 2010 nasty virus/malware that Grinler perfectly well described (and his uninstall directions worked perfectly - THANK YOU).

I believe I had an earlier version of this same thing (maybe a year ago) which I was able to avoid by executing an earlier System Restore point.

This time, however when I went to do a System Restore, I received the message "System Restore has been turned off by Group Policy. To turn back on contact Domain Administrator".
So, First Question: - was the change to the Group Policy configuration something that the IS2010 program did? I've never messed around with these policy things (didn't even know they existed before this fun event). After removing IS2010, I was able to follow a version of a procedure by Rick Selby (different web site) and eventually got the System Restore function back on (unfortunatly with all previous restore points gone). I assume this was somehow related to the IS2010 protecting itself..but if not, I'd like to know what someone thinks might have happened.

Second set of questions has to do with recommendations and compatibility for anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware.... I have a McAfee product "McAfee Security Center" on this computer (a 2005 Dell running Windows XP) - the McAfee program came with the computer and I thought it was supposed to be a fully Integrated Security Platform. I thought it was a complet... Read more

So, First Question: - was the change to the Group Policy configuration something that the IS2010 program did?Yes, many rogue programs like to play with the system restore feature to prevent you from rolling back to a cleaner state.can you recommend a Single product that does it all and will automatically update itself?Depends on if you are willing to pay. Most security suites must be purchased. But you can get individual programs (anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall, etc) for free and just run a few at a time.Personally, I would recommend using either Avira AntiVir Free/Personal edition or avast! for an antivirus program, just be sure that you only have 1 anti-virus program installed on your machineFor a firewall I would recommend Comodo, please note that the Comodo firewall installation also includes an Anti-virus program, if you decide to choose another anti-virus (not Comodo), then please be sure to only install the firewall, you will be prompted during installation if you want to install just the firewall, or the firewall and the anti-virus.The on-demand anti-malware scanners I recommend are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAnti-Spyware.All of the programs I listed above are completely free

My Laptop with Win 8 64bit upgraded from Win 7 64bit.

Since the upgrade to Win 8 and the pre-installed Norton's expired and installed the McAfee Internet Security 2013 purchased as a package with the Laptop and its all Activated.

Intermittently a warning keeps coming up telling me my 'Computer is at Risk', and telling me to update. Although the settings are at default with Automatic updates etc. If I update manually it then tells me its all protected and I do this everytime it pops up.

Its a pain in the butt. Any clues???

A:DVD Drive not working after I installed Mcafee Internet Security Suite

Did you uninstall McAfee yet?

Look in device manager and check to see if everything is OK
you can roll back the driver or update it from there.

and you can enable java in >control panel >internet options/internet properties >security >custom level > scroll down until you see script settings.

Hi~

I was not real happy with McAfee Security Center, especially after I lost internet connectivity thanks to their screwup last year, so when my subscription runs out this month I intend to install AVG Internet Security 2013.

In the meantime, suddenly McAfee Firewall keeps shutting off.

1. Should I just go ahead and uninstall McAfee now and install the AVG?

or

2. Is the McAfee Firewall issue a symptom of other problems I should address before installing the AVG?

Thanks in advance for the help. A donation coming your way.
